Saints record joint-biggest Premier League away win

Show/hide article…

Saturday’s 4-0 victory against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light saw Southampton equal their biggest away win in the top tier.

Claude Puel’s side ran out 4-0 winners against the Black Cats on Wearside, with Manolo Gabbiadini twice on target, before an own goal from Jason Denayer, and a late strike from Shane Long secured all three points in emphatic style.

It was the first time since December 2001 that Saints recorded a four-goal margin of victory away from home in the top-flight.

That previous result came at Filbert Street, the former home of Leicester City, where the Foxes were beaten by two goals from Anders Svensson, as well as strikes from James Beattie and Marian Pahars.

Prior to that, you have to go back to February 1985 for a win by the same scoreline. Joe Jordan, David Armstrong, Danny Wallace and Steve Moran were all on target without reply against QPR at Loftus Road.

The only other success by a four-goal margin on the road in the top-flight came against Chelsea in 1967. Saints won 6-2 thanks to a four-goal haul from Ron Davies, with Martin Chivers grabbing the other two in the fifth game of that season.

Southampton’s record top-flight away win at Sunderland this weekend saw striker Manolo Gabbiadini contribute consecutive Premier League goals since his debut, the first player to achieve that feat since Henri Camara.

The Black Cats were also the team that Saints secured their biggest home Premier League win against too, with an 8-0 success at St Mary’s in October 2014.

Power Rankings: Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson closes in on Romelu Lukaku

Show/hide article…

Everton striker Romelu Lukaku has kept his place at the Power Rankings summit after his four-goal haul against Bournemouth earlier this month.

However, the Belgian’s lead at the top was cut drastically after failing to replicate that form during the Toffees’ 0-0 draw at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Team-mates Ross Barkley (No 7, down five places), Seamus Coleman (No 14, down three places) and goalkeeper Joel Robles (No 15, down five places) remained in the top 20.

Alfie Mawson (No 5, up 67) volleyed Swansea in front against champions Leicester before Gylfi Sigurdsson (No 2, up one place) assisted Martin Olsson to double the lead and claim a 2-0 win.

Manchester United trio Zlatan Ibrahimovic (No 4, up 13 places), Henrikh Mkhitaryan (No 8, up 12 places) and Chris Smalling (No 9, up 15 places) all made the top 10 after United’s 2-0 win over Watford on Saturday.

Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (No 3, up 63 places) is the only Gunner in the top 30 after scoring a controversial opening goal to break the deadlock against Hull and converting a last-minute penalty.

Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus held his No 6 spot this week despite only playing 15 minutes before being substituted through injury during City’s 2-0 win at Bournemouth on Monday.

The Power Rankings methodology reflects a player’s performance by awarding points to players for 32 different matchday stats.

Below, we present this week’s Power Rankings, your club’s top points scorer and the accumulative season rankings.

The Sky Sports Power Rankings will be updated every Tuesday during the season, so be sure to keep an eye on the big movers…

Southampton BLOW! Barcelona could hijack Martin Caceres deal as they search for back-up for injured Aleix Vidal

Show/hide article…

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has confirmed he may be forced to make a defensive signing, amid reports linking him with a move for Southampton target Martin Caceres.

Enrique is in need of back-up following a horrific ankle injury to Aleix Vidal, which is set to keep him out for the next five months.

However, with the transfer window shut, Barca’s options are limited and they are now scouring the free agent list for potential recruits.

Caceres, 29, has been without a club since leaving Juventus in the summer and had been linked with a move to Southampton, who still looking for a replacement for departed captain Jose Fonte.

But, according to reports in Spain, Caceres has emerged as an option for Barca, and Enrique has confirmed the club is currently considering the possibility of a new signing.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 clash with Paris Saint-German, he said: "Whenever a player’s out and while the rules allow us to bring in a new player, it’s an option we will look at taking.

“Aleix is a player we will miss considerably, so signing a player is something we are considering and if there’s an option which convinces us we may well go for it.”

Liverpool blocked attempt to sign Virgil van Dijk - Brendan Rodgers

Show/hide article…

Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said he attempted to sign Virgil van Dijk during his time at Anfield, only for the move to be knocked back by the club.

Southampton defender Van Dijk has been linked with a big-money move in recent months following an impressive season prior to suffering an ankle injury.

Rodgers told the Evening Times he was offered the chance to sign the centre-half before he left Celtic for the south coast in 2013.

“Virgil van Dijk could have jumped from Celtic to Liverpool,” the manager, now at Celtic, said.

"When I was at Liverpool I asked about van Dijk and he was at Groningen and then at Celtic. But I was told he wouldn’t be for us at the time.

"Some clubs will want to see the players tested at certain arenas first, but if there is enough belief in the player then that counts.

"The key for scouting is trying to predict when the player is peaking. You could see with Van Dijk that he was quick, strong, good on the ball and decent in the air.

“So what more do you need to see? You could see him playing international football and, okay, clubs may want to see him in Champions League.”

Rodgers said he believed there was “maybe an issue with scouts.”

WATCH: Saves of the Week in the Premier League

Show/hide article…

WATCH: Saves of the Week in the Premier League

From David de Gea to Petr Cech, we present the top saves from the Premier League this weekend.

Early in the second half, with Arsenal leading by one goal, Cech had to be at his best to keep out Oumar Niasse’s rasping drive.

Marko Arnautovic latched onto Peter Crouch’s flick and his effort brought a smart save from Hennessey.

Foster dived low to his right to deny West Ham striker Jonathan Calleri as the Hammers pushed for the winner.

Watford may have been beaten but Gomes was needed to keep the score respectable, tipping away Pogba’s first-time effort from 15 yards.

On what was quite a comfortable afternoon for De Gea, he was forced into a fine save to keep out Mauro Zarate’s free-kick.

In a game where both sides created chances, Valdes denied Romelu Lukaku in the first-half and Ademola Lookman in the 70th minute to help his side to a point.

The Everton goalkeeper had to be alert to tip over substitute Rudy Gestede’s powerful effort late on.

Caballero moved quickly to tip Harry Arter’s curling effort from the edge of the box behind.

Watch and vote for your favourite Premier League goal of the week

Robbie Brady’s free-kick against Chelsea? Alfie Mawson’s volley against Leicester? Which was your favourite goal of the weekend in the Premier League?

Brady produced a moment of magic on his full debut for Burnley, earning Sean Dyche’s side a 1-1 draw at home to Premier League leaders Chelsea. Burnley’s club-record signing from Norwich marked his first game at Turf Moor with an inch-perfect free-kick into the top corner from 25 yards.

Swansea’s excellent form continued on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over relegation threatened Leicester, and it was Mawson who set Paul Clement’s side on the way to three points with an excellent volley.

There were also memorable strikes from West Ham winger Manuel Lanzini in his side’s 2-2 draw with West Brom, while Juan Mata was on the scoresheet again as Manchester United beat Watford at Old Trafford. Sadio Mane scored twice as Liverpool got back to winning ways against Tottenham and his second goal makes the list alongside Manolo Gabbiadini’s second strike which came in Southampton’s 4-0 win at Sunderland.

Which Premier League team is the most attacking? Clubs ranked by shots per goal so far this season

Show/hide article…

Following Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Watford, manager Jose Mourinho claimed that his team wouldn’t get the credit it deserved because of his reputation.

Goals from Juan Mata and Anthony Martial saw off the Hornets on Saturday and the Portuguese alluded to the fact that his defensive past meant people were reluctant to call such a display ‘art’.

Mourinho’s teams have developed a cautious stigma in the past but how accurate is that?

Thankfully we can now reveal which teams are the Premier League’s most attacking, by looking at the total number of shots taken by each side.

Scroll through the slideshow above to see how attacking your team is and whether Mourinho is right to be aggrieved.
