PHOTOS: Saints fans among most romantic in the country.

Show/hide article…

SOUTHAMPTON fans are among the most romantic in the country, a new survey has revealed.

The study, conducted by The Football Pools, found that 45 per cent of Saints fans would choose to spend a romantic evening with their partner tonight, rather than watch the footie.

They were pipped to the accolade of most romantic by just one other club – Stoke City. Their fans were revealed to be the most romantic in the Premier League, with 55 per cent choosing to spend the evening with their partner.

The study also found that fans of South Coast rival AFC Bournemouth were the least passionate, with not a single fan choosing a romantic evening over football. The Cherries also have the highest percentage of fans more willing to leave their partner than swap allegiances at 57 per cent, slightly above Saints fans’ 55 per cent.

The results are revealed as Valentine’s Day coincides with several UEFA Champions League matches and a full fixture list in the Football League.

The survey of more than 2,000 football fan found that 45 per cent of them plan to watch the football on TV, while 10 per cent will be heading to the match instead of spending time with a loved one.

And it even seems Saints fans are taking their passion from the game into the bedroom with one in ten admitting they have even thought about football during sex.

But don’t expect them to get sentimental at a wedding – 30 per cent of Southampton supporters said they have daydreamed about football while attending the special day.

The study comes just under two weeks before Saints head to Wembley for their EFL Cup final clash with Manchester United on February 26.

Do you know Saints’ most romantic fan?

Let us know and send your pictures.

Among those who have already sent in are Peter and Angie Forbes who did a pre-wedding fashion shoot in red and white, Jayne Gregory who met her partner because of Saints and Ally and Kelly in Milan ahead of the Europa League clash.

Tadic delighted as formation change allows him to show his quality

Show/hide article…

DUSAN Tadic insists that the 4-2-3-1 formation is the “best system” for him and Saints.

The Serbian playmaker was one of the main beneficiaries as Claude Puel scrapped the 4-3-3 formation for the popular 4-2-3-1 in the 4-0 win at Sunderland last Saturday.

Tadic, who assisted Manolo Gabbiadini’s second goal at the Stadium of Light, says that he is more influential and Saints are simply much better using those tactics.

“We have been working on our system,” he said. “We played a different system [at Sunderland] and that’s the best system for us.

“We’ve showed that now. We did good work in training on how we should play, where we would have space and that training gave us a good platform to win.”

Puel’s predecessors Ronald Koeman and Mauricio Pochettino used the 4-2-3-1 to great effect during their tenures at St Mary’s, leading Saints to three successive record Premier League finishes.

Koeman, who brought the attacking midfielder from FC Twente in 2014, got the best out of Tadic as part of the attacking three behind the striker.

In the Premier League he assisted 19 goals and scored 11 during two seasons under the Dutchman.

So why does it work so well for Saints and Tadic?

“Because immediately we have four offensive players,” the 27-year-old said. “You have good balance between offence and defence and it’s more space for everyone to play.

“In the national team before I was playing in that system. There I can have a lot of influence on the game.

“It’s my best position in that system and I can show it (my qualities) even more in that position.

“You can see how the team play better and better and I will also be better.”

Having now stopped the rot in the Premier League, Tadic has stated that Saints’ mentality is completely different as they head for the League Cup final.

Saints play Manchester United in the showpiece match at Wembley on February 26.

“We have more confidence and a better team spirit. Everything is different now,” he said.

“It gives us confidence and now we have time to prepare for the cup final.

“We need to just keep working and believe in ourselves.”

After a long slog through the winter, Tadic is looking forward - after a few days break - to heading to Spain for warm weather training on Friday.

Puel will be putting his side through intensive training as they prepare for Wembley, and many fans will be hoping they continue to perfect the 4-2-3-1 system.

“First we have a few days off, then we go to Spain for a couple of days to get ready for the final,” Tadic said.

“It’s nice to go somewhere and to get a little bit of sun.”

COMMENT: “IT’S magic you know … Tadic and Gabbiadini?”

Show/hide article…

“IT’S magic you know … Tadic and Graziano.”

As the lyrics of the chant went, it was pure magic when Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle linked on the pitch at Saints.

That fruitful partnership at the head of Saints’ attack was a thing of “beauty”, as Pelle once described it.

But then the well-groomed striker left for China and sidekick Tadic was left without an Italian to spice up his life.

Saints, under Claude Puel, scrapped the 4-2-3-1 that had once made the most of Tadic’s undeniable ability.

The Serbian had assisted 19 goals in that system under Ronald Koeman in the Premier League alone - 12 of them in 2015/16 - with Pelle more often than not the benefactor of his creativity.

But in the 4-3-3 Tadic wasn’t so effective.

This season he had assisted just once in the league before Saints welcomed another Italian through the doors.

This Italian was not as well kept in appearance as Pelle before him, but that didn’t matter to Tadic.

The arrival of Manolo Gabbiadini last month sparked a new love affair with another Italian.

It was even Pelle himself that partly encouraged Gabbiadini to make the move to St Mary’s.

It seems in advising the 25-year-old to come to England, for once, Pelle has assisted his old mate Tadic.

After his debut goal in the 3-1 defeat against West Ham, Puel had his first real opportunity to see his new boy on the training ground.

Lo and behold, what the Frenchman saw was a potential double act.

What he saw was Tadic building a very potent looking playing relationship with Gabbiadini.

The St Mary’s chief then made the decision to try and implement that into his system at Sunderland.

And as such the 4-2-3-1 returned and suddenly Tadic had another Italian to create for.

There’s no wonder Tadic labels it the “best” system for Saints.

Before Sunderland he had got one assist.

In his first game back in the 4-2-3-1, and playing alongside an Italian, Tadic looked his masterful best and assisted Gabbiadini for his exquisite second goal.

It might be still too early to wax lyrical about this blossoming partnership, but there’s signs that those two could form a very formidable attack for Saints.

It doesn’t quite fit but if things continue the Saints will have to replace one word in their old chant.

“It’s magic you know … Tadic and Gabbiadini.”

Napoli denied Manolo Gabbiadini transfer to Serie A rival - agent

Show/hide article…

Southampton were able to sign Manolo Gabbiadini from Napoli in the January transfer window after the Italian club vetoed a move to a Serie A rival, according to the player’s agent.

Gabbiadini, 25, has scored three goals in his first two Premier League outings, but he may not have been given an opportunity to play in England had Napoli not told his agent, Silvio Pagliari, that they would not listen to any offers from other Serie A clubs.

The former Sampdoria forward, who ultimately joined Southampton on deadline day for ÂŁ14.5 million, would have welcomed a move to Fiorentina, but that was out of the question.

“When I met up with president [Aurelio] De Laurentiis before Christmas, I found out that Napoli would never have allowed Manolo to join a rival of theirs, which is why I immediately started looking on the English and German market,” Pagliari told Radio Blu.

“I never spoke to [Fiorentina’s sporting director Pantaleo] Corvino about Manolo, but Fiorentina would have been a welcome destination for us.”

With only a move away from Italy a possibility, Pagliari said finding a suitor was not a simple task.

“I really struggled to find a club for him abroad,” he said. “Up until I saw the paperwork signed, I didn’t want to believe that he had actually been sold. But we were ready for a challenge overseas and we made the right choice.”

Gabbiadini has already scored as many goals in just two appearances for the Saints as he did in 13 games for the Azzurri in the first half of the season.

Capped six times by Italy, Gabbiadini scored a total of 38 in 158 Serie A appearances. His best single-season haul was 15 in 2014-15 – seven in 13 for Sampdoria and eight in 20 for Napoli.

Ben Gladwell reports on Serie A, the Italian national team and the Bundesliga for ESPN FC, UEFA and the Press Association. @UEFAcomBenG.

Own goal puts Swansea top of group

Show/hide article…

An own goal by Southampton defender Alfie Jones was enough to hand a 1-0 victory to Swansea City, who moved top of Group A as a result.

Jones tried to block Adam King’s low shot but only managed to divert the ball into his own net at Saints’ training centre.

The result means that Swansea top the group on seven points, one ahead of Southampton and three clear of Newcastle United, who have played one match more. Bristol City are bottom with three points, but have only played three matches.

Both the Swans and Saints play their next group matches against Bristol City (Southampton meet them at Twerton Park this Thursday) while Swansea host them seven days later at their training centre.

The two sides are also in Premier League 2 action next Monday with Southampton facing Everton at Goodison Park and Swansea entertaining Norwich City at their training centre.

Slattery: We should’ve taken more from the game

Show/hide article…

Saints fell to a 1-0 defeat at Staplewood Campus, as the visitors remained resolute to maintain their advantage after Alfie Jones diverted a first-half strike into his own net.

“We are disappointed with the result,” explained Slattery.

“We don’t feel like it reflected the game, really. We got off to a good start and had them on the back foot, but then conceded a deflected goal early on.

“It’s gutting to take, especially to lose to an early goal like that. But we kept at them the whole game and we know we should’ve taken much more from it.”

Tyreke Johnson came closest to a second-half equaliser for Saints, as he thumped Josh Sims’ low cross against the woodwork just before the hour mark.

The Swans then shut up shop for the closing stages of the encounter, but Slattery believes Saints still should have been able to find a way through.

“Sometimes that’s the way it is in football,” he continued.

“But I think, tonight, we could have been much more clinical in the middle and attacking thirds. We created some chances that we should have scored.

“They sat very deep and made it hard for us, but that’s going to happen in games - we need to learn to find solutions to get around that and break teams down.”
