Klarer called for Austria duty

Show/hide article…

Klarer, who has made 16 appearances for Craig Fleming’s side this term, has been called up to the national squad for their training camp in Florence.

During the five-day trip Austria will play two friendly matches against Italy in preparation for next month’s Under-17 UEFA Elite round.

“We’ve had a good group getting international call-ups,” explained Fleming.

"Ultimately that’s what we want at the club: people that are getting recognised by their countries and good players that can push on and come through the ranks.

“It’ll be another good experience for Christoph to go away and experience international football.”

Gabbiadini: I’ve settled in better than I could expect

Show/hide article…

The striker, who arrived on deadline day in January from Italian club Napoli, has scored three goals in two games for Claude Puel’s side.

Goals two and three arrived in Saturday’s fine win over Sunderland, and the Italian striker says he’s delighted with the way he’s adjusting to life in England.

“I have settled in my better than I thought I ever could, and that is because of the support of my teammates and the staff at the club,” Gabbiadini said.

“I am very happy with the first two games and I hope I can continue this and settle with my new teammates and my new club even more.”

Saints now have a huge cup final against Manchester United to look forward to, and while Gabbiadini is excited about the prospect of playing at Wembley, he heaped praise on his teammates for the opportunity.

“I’m very happy that the next game we play is going to be at Wembley. I of course have to thank my teammates because I have just arrived,” he added.

“They did everything to get to this final. I’m very happy I am here for this moment.

“It is going to be a tough match, because Manchester United is a very good team, but I hope that we can win the game. It will be amazing to win this trophy.”

LEAGUE CUP FINAL: Can you get tickets yet? Next allocation released but they’re selling fast

Show/hide article…

SAINTS have announced that there is now fewer than 3,400 tickets left for the League Cup final on February 26.

Claude Puel’s men face Manchester United at Wembley for a chance at their first major silverware in 41 years.

With Saints given an allocation of 31,461, tickets are in high demand and have been selling rapidly.

There is now under 3,400 up for grabs as Saints open up the next round of sale, which allows members to buy the remaining tickets.

Tomorrow morning from 9am, members who have purchased at least four home fixtures from the 2016/17 season will be able to buy tickets online.

On Wednesday morning members who have bought tickets for at least three home games this term will be able to buy the remaining tickets, before the last round on Thursday, which allows fans that have purchased at least two matches at St Mary’s to snap up the remaining seats - if there are any.

Rodgers: ‘Liverpool turned down chance to sign Virgil van Dijk’

Show/hide article…

Brendan Rodgers has revealed that he tried to bring Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool during his time at Anfield but was knocked back by the club’s scouts.

Van Dijk’s absence through injury had seen Southampton concede five goals in the two games prior to their shutout win at Sunderland on Saturday. In his 30 appearances prior to the ankle injury, which threatens to keep the Dutchman out until the end of the season, Southampton had kept 12 clean sheets.

That form has brought speculation that the Dutch international would be leaving St Mary’s in the summer. Last week Sportsmail reported that interest in from Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester City means Van Dijk could have played his last game as a Saint.

Former Liverpool boss Rodgers - who is now in charge at Celtic, the club who sold Van Dijk to Southampton in September 2015 - says he wanted the defender whilst still playing in Holland.

‘When I was at Liverpool I asked about van Dijk and he was at Groningen and then at Celtic. But I was told he wouldn’t be for us at the time,’ Rodgers told the Evening Times.

'It’s about where the player is at, at the time of their ability.

'Virgil van Dijk could have jumped from Celtic to a Liverpool. Some clubs will want to see the players tested at certain arenas first.

‘You could see with van Dijk that he was quick, strong, good on the ball and decent in the air.’

Rodgers added: ‘So what more do you need to see? You could see him playing international football and, okay, clubs may want to see him in Champions League.’

Liverpool urged Rodgers not to sign Van Dijk

Show/hide article…

FORMER Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers revealed that he wanted to sign Saints captain Virgil van Dijk while at Anfield.

But Rodgers, who now manages Van Dijk’s former club Celtic, was told “he wouldn’t be for us at the time”.

Van Dijk was then snapped up by Saints for £13m in September 2015 and has since become one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old, who is currently sidelined for up to three months with an ankle injury, has attracted interest from the top-flight’s big spenders this term, having shown his class throughout the campaign for Saints.

A fee of around £50m has been mooted.

“When I was at Liverpool I asked about Van Dijk when he was at Groningen and then at Celtic,” Rodgers said. "But I was told he wouldn’t be for us at the time.

"Van Dijk could have jumped from Celtic to a Liverpool. Some clubs will want to see the players tested at certain arenas first.

"But if there is enough belief in the player then that counts. The key for scouting is trying to predict when the player is peaking.

"You could see with Van Dijk that he was quick, strong, good on the ball and decent in the air.

"So what more do you need to see? You could see him playing international football and, okay, clubs may want to see him in Champions League.

"Wanyama left and then made the jump but he was a good player at Celtic, showing up well in the Champions League.

“There is maybe an issue with scouts.”

While recently the Merseyside outfit have reportedly shown an interest in Van Dijk along with numerous other clubs, ex-Saint Gordon Watson believes he would be “badly advised” to move to another Premier League club.

“Van Dijk could easily play for one of the top three European clubs - Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich,” he said recently.

"He is probably more of a Barcelona or Bayern player than a Madrid one, though.

"He must surely end up going to one of those three clubs, and for a lot of money.

“If Virgil ends up going to another Premier League club he will have been badly advised.”

Liverpool passed up chance to sign Virgil van Dijk, says Brendan Rodgers

Show/hide article…

Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says the club turned down Virgil van Dijk before he joined Southampton.

Van Dijk has been linked with a host of Europe’s biggest clubs after an impressive campaign for Southampton, prior to suffering an ankle injury, but Southampton executive director Les Reed insisting the player is “not for sale” in January.

Rodgers has now revealed he was offered the chance to sign Van Dijk for Liverpool before the defender left Celtic for Southampton for £2.6m in 2013, but the Reds’ scouting pool did not think he was suitable for the club.

“Virgil van Dijk could have jumped from Celtic to Liverpool,” Rodgers, now Celtic manager, told the Evening Times. "Some clubs will want to see the players tested at certain arenas first.

"But if there is enough belief in the player then that counts. The key for scouting is trying to predict when the player is peaking.

Transfer news: Man Utd to sell star, Liverpool wanted van Dijk, Klopp and Mourinho battle

Show/hide article…

Brendan Rodgers would have signed Virgil van Dijk during his time at Liverpool but the club’s scouting system said no. And according to former Kop boss, the Holland international would already be at Anfield if he had his way. “Virgil van Dijk could have jumped from Celtic to a Liverpool. Some clubs will want to see the players tested at certain arenas first,” Rodgers told the Evening Times.

“I was told he wouldn’t be for us at the time” “But if there is enough belief in the player then that counts. But I was told he wouldn’t be for us at the time.”

Jose Mourinho is missing Juan Mata about and he could sell him this summer. That’s according to pundit Garth Crooks. He reckons Mourinho could sell the Spain international now that he’s raised his value by playing so well. “I interviewed him when he was a Chelsea player before he was shown the door by Jose Mourinho and sold to Manchester United - only for the man who flogged him to United to follow him to Old Trafford,” he told the BBC. “You think at this point it’s only a matter of time before Mourinho moves Mata on once more. “He is now playing as well for United as he did when Mourinho decided to sell him at Chelsea - which rather suggests to me that he has become saleable again and therefore may be the first in Mourinho’s cull come the end of the season. Watch this space.”

Gabbiadini catches Camara

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbiadini has become the first player since Henri Camara to score in his first two Premier League games for Southampton.

Following his brace of goals at Sunderland over the weekend, Italian striker Gabbiadini, who scored the 400th goal by an Italian in the Premier League on his debut against West Ham, has now matched Camara’s feat of scoring in his first two Premier League games.

Camara achieved that feat with Southampton in 2005 when he scored in consecutive matches against Birmingham City and Everton.

And, if that’s a good omen with the EFL Cup Final looming, then Camara would even go onto score twice in his third game for Saints – a 2-2 draw with Brentford in the FA Cup.

Other players who have scored in consecutive games from their debut for Saints in all competitions include, Rickie Lambert in 2009 and, Colin Clarke in 1986.

Over the course of his first two games for Southampton, Gabbiadini has also attempted 11 shots, which is the most of any Premier League player from their first two appearances.

Gabbiadini needs to score in the next four Premier League games if he is to equal a club record of scoring goals in consecutive top-flight games not from their debut. James Beattie currently holds that title for Saints having scored in six successive matches between February and April in 2003, although he didn’t score in the two cup games sandwiched between that run.

If he is to continue his hot streak in the top-flight then Gabbiadini will have eyes on surpassing last season’s record-breaking goal streak by Jamie Vardy, who scored in 11 consecutive matches, including one against Southampton.

Brendan Rodgers reveals he was urged NOT to sign Van Dijk at Liverpool

Show/hide article…

The Southampton defender has been linked with a £40m summer move after impressing on the south coast.

Liverpool are among those thought to be interested, along with Manchester City and Everton.

But Rodgers has revealed Van Dijk could have already been at Anfield, had he got his wish.

The Northern Irishman was keen on the defender during his time in Holland and then again while at Rodgers’ current employers Celtic.

“When I was at Liverpool I asked about van Dijk and he was at Groningen and then at Celtic. But I was told he wouldn’t be for us at the time," he told the Evening Times.

“Virgil van Dijk could have jumped from Celtic to a Liverpool. Some clubs will want to see the players tested at certain arenas first.

“You could see with van Dijk that he was quick, strong, good on the ball and decent in the air.”

Van Dijk is currently out injured and there are fears he will miss the rest of the Premier League season.

Boss Claude Puel remains confident of keeping the player who penned a six-year deal last summer.

Ref Watch: VAR would disallow Alexis Sanchez goal and Slaven Bilic’s behaviour is unacceptable

Show/hide article…

Should Alexis Sanchez’s goal have been disallowed? Were Hull unlucky? And was Slaven Bilic right to feel aggrieved?

Dermot Gallagher joined us on Sky Sports Now on Monday morning to run through the big incidents from the weekend in the Premier League and abroad.

INCIDENT: Arsenal take the lead through Alexis Sanchez, who handles the ball in as it ricochets off his arm from close range. Deliberate or unintentional?

DERMOT’S VERDICT: It’s a moral dilemma when you think about it, because a handball has to be deliberate. Sanchez will say it is not, but it doesn’t sit right with anybody that he scored with his hand.

The problem there is that it has happened so fast. Mark Clattenburg can’t see it, the linesman from his angle thinks it has hit him on the chest.

The VAR (video assistant referee) will come, and the VAR will have looked at that and decided it was handball and it would have been cleared up. But with human error being what it is, he’s got away with it.

INCIDENT: Last-man Kieran Gibbs brings down Lazar Markovic as the Hull midfielder looks to take control of the ball and go through on goal. Gibbs is shown a yellow card by referee Mark Clattenburg.

DERMOT’S VERDICT: I think red. Because the law says the attacker must be in control of the ball or have the likelihood of being in control of the ball. All I can think is that Mark Clattenburg might think the ball is going away from Markovic.

INCIDENT: Sam Clucas is penalised for a deliberate handball on the line, shown a red card, and Sanchez converts the penalty for 2-0.

DERMOT’S VERDICT: It is the right decision. It is handball, he’s tried to stop it, he’s put his hand out. Hull will look back and say ‘there are two handballs and we’ve been penalised twice’.

INCIDENT: West Ham felt their midfielder Sofiane Feghouli was fouled by Chris Brunt in the build up to Nacer Chadli’s opening goal at the London Stadium. Goal awarded.

DERMOT’S VERDICT: I looked at it over and over again, and the more you look at it the more you change your mind. The referee Michael Oliver was ideally placed. I just think it’s one of those subjective decisions, some would say foul some would say not, so I’d stick with the referee.

INCIDENT: After Manuel Lanzini’s goal was disallowed, Slaven Bilic’s assistant Nikola Jurcevic is sent to the stands for protesting as Michail Antonio is flagged offside. Coming back from an offside position, Antonio moves towards the goalkeeper.

DERMOT’S VERDICT: It’s definitely offside. If you look at this incident, the law says interfering with play or an opponent is offside, he actually impedes the goalkeeper so it’s offside.

INCIDENT: Bilic himself was dispatched to the stand after West Brom’s equaliser in the last minute. The Croatian threw a TV microphone to the floor, as Bilic felt that the Baggies took a throw-in from an incorrect position up the pitch in the build-up to the goal, and that the initial throw-in should have been awarded to the Hammers in the first place.

DERMOT’S VERDICT: The reaction is totally over the top. It’s not acceptable from Bilic.

INCIDENT: Boro midfielder Gaston Ramirez goes in late on Leighton Baines, stamping on his foot. Booking given only.

DERMOT’S VERDICT: I see this tackle and think, what’s wrong? When you see the proper angle, it’s a red card. A TV red card if you like.

INCIDENT: David Moyes complained that Manolo Gabbiadini’s opener for Southampton was a handball. The ball struck his arm, which was beside his torso, and went into the goal.

DERMOT’S VERDICT: No handball. It’s struck him high on the body, but we have to sit down and say “this is this, this is acceptable, this is not acceptable.”

INCIDENT: Against Sparta Rotterdam, Ajax’s Joel Veltman points out to his opponent Ivan Calero that team-mate Bertrand Traore is injured on the ground, before running past the defender to cross. Nothing given.

DERMOT’S VERDICT: He will say it’s ingenious, but it’s certainly stretching sportsmanship to the limit.
