Olomola: Swansea will pose a technical challenge

Show/hide article

Martin Hunter’s men beat the Swans 1-0 in the reverse Premier League Cup fixture in Wales, and victory this time around would propel them towards qualification from the group.

“Swansea are a good side,” started Olomola.

“We remember from playing them last time that they like to get it down and play football, so it will be a very technical game.

“We were compact and dealt with their pressure well that day. We are a team that also like to play football so it will be a contest to see who can do it better.”

Olomola has been missing from action since the beginning of December, when he hobbled off with an early injury against Sunderland.

But 19-year-old has returned and impressed in the past two matches against Tottenham and Leicester, as he now aims to complete his recovery.

“It was great to be back out there,” he continued.

“To help the team get good results and show the managers again what I can do. My aim is just to keep getting fitter and get my match sharpness up.

“I think there is always room for improvement, but I am just getting myself back into it. I played nearly my first 90 minutes against Leicester, so hopefully I will be able to do that on Monday.”

‘Liverpool turned down chance to sign Virgil van Dijk’

Show/hide article

Liverpool turned down Virgil van Dijk when Brendan Rodgers was in charge at Anfield, the former Reds boss has claimed.

Rodgers says he wanted to sign Van Dijk when the defender was at Groningen and then at Celtic, but was told he couldn’t sign the Dutchman because Liverpool’s scouts were unsure if he’d be able to make it in the Premier League.

“You could see with Van Dijk that he was quick, strong, good on the ball and decent in the air,” Rodgers told the Evening Times.

"So what more do you need to see? You could see him playing international football and, okay, clubs may want to see him in Champions League.

“When I was at Liverpool I asked about van Dijk and he was at Groningen and then at Celtic. But I was told he wouldn’t be for us at the time.”

Van Dijk has shone since joining Southampton from Celtic in 2015 and is now rated at ÂŁ50million by the South Coast club, with a number of top English clubs interested in acquiring his services.

Sadio Mane’s agent has rejected claims his client turned down a move to Tottenham in the summer due to his wage demands.

The Senegal international joined Liverpool for a ÂŁ34million fee in the off-season and his representative, Bjorn Bezemer, says Mane had five big-money offers on the table when he decided to leave Southampton at the end of last campaign.

Prior to Liverpool’s victory over Spurs on Saturday, reports began to circulate claiming Mane had chosen the Reds over Spurs due to the higher wages on offer at Anfield.

Mane would go on to score both goals in his side’s 2-0 win on Saturday, putting in a man of the match performance.

Agent Bezemer has now hit back at claims the 24-year-old forward opted for Merseyside over North London with money the main motivation, the Liverpool Echo report.

“Sadio had five offers in the summer and financially all of them were good,” the Guardian reported Bezemer to have said. “We wanted the right team, with the right coach at the right moment to arrive at the next level.

“That is the reason Sadio went to Anfield.”

Jurgen Klopp will whisk Liverpool away for a winter break after reviving their Champions League chances, writes David Maddock.

The Reds don’t have another match until February 27, so will head out to La Manga in Spain for what the manager describes as a “pre-season”.

It is ironic the German coach will get the mid-winter break he so desperately believes is necessary for Premier League teams, after a Christmas and New Year period where his side played 13 matches in 33 days — more than a game every three days.

Referring to this fortnight’s break from action before that Monday night trip to Leicester, boss Klopp said: “Now we are in pre-season. We will use this and we will go again and again and again.”

Klopp will give his team a few days off, and then fly out to La Manga for a training camp at a Spanish resort the club has visited frequently over the years.

“There was a sense of everyone coming together and thinking it was us against the world.”

No, not Donald Trump issuing another barking-mad soundbite but Adam Lallana talking about the moment that may have transformed Liverpool’s season.

They needed something after a catastrophic January – and captain Jordan Henderson provided it by arranging a passionate team meeting, without the presence of manager Jurgen Klopp, where harsh words were spoken.

“It was the team captain who got us together, but it wasn’t just him who spoke,” Lallana explained after Saturday’s win over Tottenham. “Everybody spoke and it was refreshing. We came out of it with an ‘Us against the world’ attitude.

“I came out of it knowing that everyone was intent on turning things around as quickly as possible.”

Niall Quinn’s column: Does it really take a long playing career to be a successful boss?

Show/hide article

In his latest Sky Sports column, Niall Quinn discusses what it takes to be a successful manager in the modern era.

It must have been a confusing week for Claudio Ranieri. Rumours of player discontent last weekend were followed by strong backing from the powers that be at Leicester. Then came a dizzy FA Cup night in midweek and on Sunday it was back to the drip-feed of misery. Leicester lost 2-0 to Swansea.

As he shook hands with Paul Clement at full time, did Claudio think that this was maybe the strangest few days in this 43-year love affair with professional football? He played for four clubs and then over the last three decades he has managed 16 more. He won the Premier League last year and must have figured that at long last he had got football and football management sussed.

On Sunday he was shaking hands with a former PE teacher who looks and talks like a hard man from EastEnders, a man who played for Banstead Athletic and Corinthian Casuals but who had just been named Premier League manager of the month. Clement has single-handedly refloated Swansea from the reef that they had got themselves stuck on.

How has he done it? Derby County fans who saw him sacked while their team was fifth in the championship must be wondering if they threw away a diamond. Swansea City fans know that feeling. The club bumped off Garry Monk with too much haste but memories are short. Clement is the new messiah.

He has been to some of the great places of learning as a coaching assistant - Bayern, Real Madrid and PSG. An unusual education for an English manager, and most of the time his mentor was Carlo Ancelotti. He was obviously a good student, but his badges were no more impressive than his predecessor Bob Bradley.

Since the Premier League began, only eight managers have won the title. Three Italians (Ancelotti, Mancini and Ranieri), two Scots (Dalglish and Fergie), one Portuguese (Mourinho); one Chilean (Pellegrini) and a Frenchman (Wenger).

Fergie, the greatest name on the Mount Rushmore of managers, finished playing at 32 after a journeyman career that began at Queens Park and ended at Ayr. Forty-one appearances for Rangers was the highlight. When he took over as manager at East Stirlingshire the world didn’t notice let alone expect greatness, although one player said that he had “never been afraid of anyone before but Ferguson was a frightening b ** from the start.”

Fergie won 13 titles and never stopped scaring people. If that was the only criterion though how do we explain men like Wenger, Pellegrini and Ranieri who wouldn’t say boo to a goose, unless the goose was reffing.

Wenger had a career which reached the dizzy heights of semi-professional football and he spent the last two years of his playing career basically laying the groundwork for going into coaching. Mourinho famously was a translator even if he did admit this week that he had to ask a friend what the word ‘churn’ meant.

Greatness as a player is no indicator of success but not necessarily a hindrance. Arrigo Sacchi, whose paid job before going into football management was as a shoe salesman, answered early doubters thus: “I never realised that in order to become a jockey you have to have been a horse first.”

Carlos Parreira and Bora Milutinovic are the only two managers to each have led five different nations to World Cup finals. Parreira had no playing career, he started as a fitness coach, while Milutinovic never played at international level. Way back Bertie Mee, who brought Arsenal to a double when that was a big deal, had a playing career of under 30 matches for Mansfield and Southampton before becoming a physio.

He’d been doing that job for six years at Arsenal when he was asked to become manager - Arsenal fans were shocked when Wenger was appointed, so imagine the physio being offered the job. Bertie asked for a get-out clause in his contract, so he could go back to being the physio after 12 months if things didn’t work out.

Pep Guardiola and Antonio Conte would have been top of the class during their playing days. Pep has come to England and learned that ‘churn’ is what your stomach does when you see your star players under-performing. Conte took just a few weeks to get the hang of it.

Jurgen Klopp played for Mainz for a long time but as of now Klopp’s application for a spot on Mount Rushmore has been placed in the "application pending’’ file for the foreseeable future.

Paul Clement will point to having had a great mentor. But from Fergie ‘The Mentor’s’ 13 title-winning teams for every Mark Hughes there has been a Paul Ince, an Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (the Cardiff version, not Molde), a Paul Parker, even the likes of Bryan Robson, Gary Neville and Roy Keane have had their struggles.

You look at great players hanging around now in the holding pattern waiting to become great managers. Gerrard, Giggs and Lampard are the big fish. Do they know what goes into the make-up of a great manager? They’ve seen it all but can they teach it? I hope so.

However, the great hopes of current English management, Howe, Monk, Dyche and now Clement haven’t an international cap between them. None of them were players that everybody kept an eye on.

Even a guy like Marco Silva, putting some buoyancy into Hull right now, played all of two games in the Primeira Liga in Portugal in a 15-year career.

If you were Gerrard, Giggs and Lampard would you be a bit hesitant? With your money made and your reputation still golden would you have the savage hunger to put it all on the line again. And if the answer is yes, then what?

What has Clement got that Bradley didn’t have? And how can you get a badge for it? Can it be bottled?

There used to be a story - probably a false one - doing the rounds years ago of a gap between the walls in the away dressing room at Bramall Lane, where supposedly a Sheffield United trainee would squeeze in and listen to the visiting manager’s team talks. He’d then hurry on over to the home manager to tell what he’d heard. No badges in them days but 10 out of 10 for invention.

So what does it really take to make a great manager in the modern era? You know, I’d tell you but with a 20 per cent league win record as a manager myself there is an 80 per cent chance I would be wrong.

McMenemy: Premier League focus takes over as clubs aim for the finish line

Show/hide article

WE are now into the last third of the Premier League season and most of the managers in the top flight will be sitting and thinking ‘we are out of the cups, we only have one thing to concentrate on.’

That will be survival in the case of the bottom six, and I suppose the middle eight, whereas the top six have to try and make their way into the top four to qualify for the Champions League.

Looking at the table Londoners should be happy with the top three teams being Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal.

There are two from Manchester, and then Merseyside, as ever, making an effort with Everton under our old friend Mr Koeman doing well to try and break into the group which in the old days they were always part of.

If we look at the bottom six, this is the time when managers have got to get the players together, cards on the table, and ask ‘where do you want to be next season?’ In addition of course we read about clubs who have put into contracts clauses so if they are relegated the players see their salaries drop by as much as 40 per cent, and no one would like that.

The fact is there are no easy games anywhere. Ask Liverpool who went to Hull City last week.

The bookmakers probably made quite a bit of money with Hull, who were bottom at the time, coming out with a convincing 2-0 win.

They of course have changed manager and like a lot of the continental gentlemen coming in was largely unheard of, but he has certainly had a good start.

I suppose the most surprising situation of all is last year’s champions Leicester, who are now only a point above the relegation zone.

Whilst they won in the cup replay in midweek, they know it is points that are the most important, and to read about their manager, Claudio Ranieri, possibly being under threat of losing his job after winning the league against all odds less than a year ago and being voted manager of the year by everyone from here to kingdom come, is ridiculous.

Having said all that, something obviously hasn’t been right, but now is the time to sort it out.

Other clubs who possibly had starts which were too good to be true include our neighbours Bournemouth, who I would remind everybody only have a capacity of about 11,500.

They looked as though they were establishing themselves in that mid-eight group but are now looking over their shoulder after letting in six goals at Everton.

To be fair they did score three and any team scoring three goals away from home would normally have a point or three to bring home with them.

The argument about too many games, too many fixtures – and I heard radio talk about possibly altering the FA Cup to playing only one game with no replays - personally I think is rubbish.

The league has less clubs in than before, the squads of players are probably double what they used to be, and the money coming in of course is as if every club has won the lottery compared to a decade or two ago, but in the dressing room nothing has changed.

Managers will have to get into their players the importance of the upcoming games.

The finishing line is not really in sight yet but they have been in the season long enough to know exactly what their strengths and weaknesses are and I can imagine lots of work going on defensively with clubs hoping they can score goals, such as the couple we saw Leicester come up with in extra time to beat Derby County.

A substitute came on and after two and half minutes, would you believe, had the cheek to take a shot from outside the penalty area.

It surprised everyone and went into the corner of the net.

Why, why, why do they not do it more often?

Yet again I have to point out there were no defenders on the post for corners and I wonder if the statisticians who tell us everything almost down to how much chewing gum Sam Allardyce gets through can count the number of goals that go in by the posts from corners.

Never mind, happy days. It is still the best and most interesting league of them all, which is why we attract so many viewers, managers, players and owners from all around the world.

Premier League sack race: The managers in danger of losing their jobs

Show/hide article

Leicester suffered their fifth consecutive Premier League defeat on Sunday after going down 2-0 away to Swansea.

The reigning champions are now just two points off the bottom of the table and are without a league goal in 2017.

Manager Claudio Ranieri admitted he may have been too loyal to the players who won the title last season and warned the time has come for him to wield the axe.

He said: “I could be, could be [too loyal]. It is difficult when you achieve something so good you want to give them one chance, two chances, three chances. Maybe now, it is too much.

“We have two problems. Conceding goals, and not scoring. We have to speak together to find the solutions, it is not possible to continue in this way.”

The reality of the situation, though, is that Ranieri may not be in charge at the King Power for much longer. The Italian has been made odds on favourite to be the next manager to leave his post.

But who else is on the edge?

Chelsea are 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League table and the chance to complete a domestic double is still on.

Pochettino’s side could have won the league last season and will be desperate to improve upon that third-placed finish. The Argentine is looking to become the first Tottenham manager to finish above Arsenal in two decades.

He may not be to everyone’s taste but West Brom have improved significantly since Pulis took charge. Currently eighth in the league, they look good for a top 10 finish.

His debut season may not be going exactly as fans hoped but Jose Mourinho is slowly changing this team for the better. A contract extension has already been mooted for the end of the season.

Everton still lack consistency and are seven points off the top four — their ultimate target — but Ronald Koeman is in little danger of losing his job. Koeman was forced to sell his ‘best’ defender during the summer but the Toffees have conceded eight goals fewer than at this stage last season.

Like Mourinho, Guardiola’s start to life in Manchester has not gone as expected. City, favourites for the title in the summer, are fifth but they have waited years to get Guardiola in their dugout, if the Spaniard is set for an exit it will be on his terms.

Burnely have clearly learned lessons from their previous season in the Premier League and are in with a chance of finishing in the top half of the table.

His contract is up at the end of the season and half of the club’s fans are calling for his head. Is his time in England drawing to a close? Only Wenger knows.

Liverpool have gone from title contenders to top four hopefuls in less than two months - 2017 has shown there is still plenty of work to be dome at Anfield. Liverpool would struggle to attract a better manager than Klopp, though.

Stoke’s aim is to bring European football to the club. They might be some distance off the top fiveat the moment but Hughes has the potential to deliver.

Bournemouth’s defence has been woeful this season and the loss of Nathan Ake has hardly helped Eddie Howe’s cause. Howe is a good manager with a bright future but this season has been a disappointment.

Clement has enjoyed a strong start to life Swansea and Sunday’s 2-0 win over Leicester has moved them up to 15th in the table, four points off the relegation places.

Silva’s Hull were well-beaten by Arsenal on Saturday and look likely to go down, but that would not be the fault of their new manager. The Tigers are in their best form of the season and good results against Liverpool and Manchester United show Hull would be mad to get rid of their coach.

Southampton had lost three straight games before their 4-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday. Saints are comfortably mid-table and have an EFL Cup final to look forward to.

Rock bottom of the Premier League, Sunderland have improved but still look doomed. It will take a monumental effort to avoid relegation this season.

Watford started the season well but have tailed off slightly and have a slim chance of being drawn into the relegation battle.

Allardyce loves to remind people he has never been relegated but this season might be the end of that record. Crystal Palace are in the middle of a terrible patch of form and have won just one of their last 11 games in all competitions.

This was supposed to be the season West Ham finally took their seat at English football’s top table, instead they find themselves closer to the relegation places than the top four.

Middlesbrough’s defence has been exceptional this season — it’s the fourth best in the league — but they have struggled at the other end and are in real danger of relegation. They have not won a league game this year.

Leicester are not in the relegation places but have lost each of their last five league games. It’s getting desperate at the King Power.

Loan Watch: Gallagher’s Blackburn leave it late

Show/hide article

Jon Taylor put bottom-of-the-table Rotherham ahead early in the second half, as he thumped in from Joe Newell’s pass.

Richard O’Donnell then put on a fine display in goal to keep the visitors at bay, and Gallagher had an opportunity to level but fired over from a good position.

The equaliser eventually came five minutes from time when Stephen Kelly turned substitute Connor Mahoney’s in-swinging corner into his own net.

Rovers’ first away point since December sees them remain in the bottom three, but gain a point on Burton Albion who lost away to Brighton.

Elsewhere, Jason McCarthy suffered a 4-1 defeat with Walsall away at Bolton Wanderers.

Despite taking an early lead through Erhun Otzumer’s 40-yard goal of the season contender, the Saddlers were pegged back on 15 minutes through Gary Madine.

A James O’Connor own goal then gave the hosts the lead before strikes from Liam Trotter and Chris Long completed the scoreline.

The defeat sees Walsall drop to 12th in League One.

In Spain, Paulo Gazzaniga played 90 minutes in Rayo Vallecano’s 2-1 defeat away to Mallorca.

The hosts flew to an early lead, as Junior Lago netted on 15 minutes before Emmanuel Culio converted from the spot just five minutes later.

Alex Moreno’s early second-half strike gave Vallecano a way back into the fixture, but the hosts held out to secure all three points.
