Rafa Benitez says ‘every game is a cup final’ for Newcastle as pressure ramps up

Show/hide article…

Rafa Benitez wants Newcastle to remember that “every game is a cup final for us” as the Magpies prepare for the visit of Southampton on Saturday.

Benitez, in his second season as manager at Newcastle, also spoke of the difficulties he will likely encounter in coming up against a previous colleague in Mauricio Pellegrino, with Benitez expecting Pellegrino to pre-empt his tactical choices.

“He was my player and assistant for a while and he is someone who knows me very well. I know him too and it will be hard for either of us to do something that the other one is not expecting,” said Benitez, ahead of their Premier League clash.

Newcastle could also welcome the return of midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, who has returned to training and will face a late fitness test ahead of the game against Southampton. Benitez also confirmed that Islam Slimani, who has not yet made an appearance for the club, will not feature against the Saints, as he continues to recover from a thigh injury.

The Magpies face no opposition for over three weeks after playing Southampton, and Benitez has confirmed he plans to take the players for a training camp in Spain whilst also potentially playing a friendly against Belgian side Royal Antwerp.

Benitez to make late call on Jonjo Shelvey ahead of Saints clash

Show/hide article…

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez says he will make a late decision on the fitness of Jonjo Shelvey ahead of Saturday’s match against Saints

The former Liverpool and Swansea man missed last week’s defeat at Anfield with a knee injury but could be in consideration to face the Saints at St James’ Park.

Benitez, who confirmed his squad would travel to his native Spain for a training camp next week, said: "Jonjo Shelvey has been training. We have to be careful with him and decide tomorrow.

“[Striker] Islam Slimani is doing better (in his recovery from a thigh problem). Rob Elliot [back] is out and Jesus Gamez [ankle] is not available.”

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez: Saints clash is like a ‘cup final’

Show/hide article…

RAFAEL Benitez has told Newcastle to approach each of their remaining nine games as cup finals as they attempt to secure their Premier League status - starting with today’s clash against Saints.

The 16th-placed Magpies are just one place and a single point better off than Mauricio Pellegrino’s men.

Benitez knows victory could prove invaluable to their cause.

However, he is refusing to pile any more pressure than necessary upon his players as they head into a fixture which could have a significant say in their fate.

He said: “Every game is important. This is the most important because it is the next one, but we have to keep going to the end.

“We will be trying to win, but we will be doing that until the last one. Every game is a final for us now.

“Every game against a team that is close to us, I am sure people will say it is a six-point game, but we just have to do our best to get the points and then see where we are in the table. There are still a lot of games to play.”

Newcastle will run boosted by the memory of their last outing at St James’ Park, when they beat Manchester United 1-0.

The game pitches the Magpies boss into direct competition with a man who both played for and worked under him in Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino, and while the two men enjoy a good relationship, that could present its own problems.

Benitez said: “He was my player and assistant for a while and he is someone who knows me very well.

“I know him too and it will be hard for either of us to do something that the other one is not expecting.”

Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey could yet be involved after returning to training following the knee injury which kept him out of last weekend’s 2-0 defeat at Liverpool with the manager ready to make a late decision.

However, loan striker Islam Slimani, who is yet to make an appearance for the club, will not be involved once again as he continues his recovery from a thigh injury.

The Magpies do not have a game for three weeks after today, and Benitez has confirmed that he plans to take the players to Spain for a four-day training camp followed by a friendly with Belgian side Royal Antwerp among their possible opponents.

Southampton and West Ham keen on £15m rated Basel winger who starred vs City

Show/hide article…

Manchester City slayer Mohamed Elyounoussi could be heading back to England permanently in the summer.

Southampton and West Ham are tracking the impressive Basel winger and weighing up moves for the £15m-rated Norwegian.

Exciting forward Elyounoussi’s reputation is on the rise and he enhanced it further with a man-of-the match display in Basel’s Champions League win at City in midweek.

The 23 year-old scored the Swiss champions’ equaliser before setting up their second leg winner at the Etihad.

In total Elyounoussi has bagged seven goals and racked up 13 assists this season.

Elyounoussi joined Basel in 2016 and still has three years left to run on his current deal.
