Newcastle vs Southampton: Team news, kick-off, odds and match stats

Show/hide article…

With Newcastle and Southampton set to engage in a heated battle for Premier League survival, Sportsmail brings you the team news from both sides, as well as match stats, betting odds and provisional squads ahead of a crucial clash at the foot of the table.

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez will make a late decision on the fitness of midfielder Jonjo Shelvey ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Southampton.

Shelvey missed last weekend’s 2-0 defeat at Liverpool with a knee problem, but he is back in training and could be included for the home match against Saints.

Striker Islam Slimani is still working his way back from a thigh problem, while keeper Rob Elliot (back) and Jesus Gamez (ankle) are also out.

Southampton will still be without captain Steven Davis for the trip to Newcastle.

Midfielder Davis has missed the last three games with a hamstring problem and faces at least another week on the sidelines.

Defender Maya Yoshida (knee) and striker Charlie Austin (hamstring) remain on the casualty list.

Newcastle are winless in their last seven Premier League meetings with Southampton (D3 L4), since a 4-2 win in February 2013.

Saints have only failed to score in one of their last 19 Premier League games against Newcastle, netting in each of the last 12.

At St James’ Park, though, Newcastle have lost only one of their last 12 league games against Saturday’s visitors (W8 D3 L1), but are winless in three at home against them (D2 L1).

After a run of eight home Premier League games without a win (D3 L5), the Magpies won their last game at St James’ Park – they’ve not won back-to-back Premier League games at home since September. Only Tottenham (5) are on a longer current unbeaten away run than Southampton (4 – W1 D3).

No side has scored fewer home Premier League goals this season than Newcastle (12, level with Burnley), while Rafael Benitez’s men have also scored a joint-league low 44% of their goals in home games this season (same as West Ham).

Mauricio Pellegrino’s side have conceded the most headed goals of any club in the league this season (11), with five of their last nine goals shipped coming via headers.

Meanwhile, Saints have also shipped a league-high 11 goals from outside the area in the Premier League this season.

Benitez hasn’t beaten Southampton in a Premier League match since his first ever meeting with them (1-0 in December 2004), drawing two and losing three since.

Joselu has scored 33% of Newcastle’s home Premier League goals this season (4/12).

Bertrand facing survival fight head-on

Show/hide article…

Saints travel to Newcastle tomorrow just one point above the relegation zone, knowing victory would see them leapfrog their hosts.

Bertrand, nearing the end of his fourth season at St Mary’s, acknowledges it is new territory but sees no reason to panic with nine games to play.

“We’re used to back-to-back solid seasons and we’ve had some fantastic finishes, but it’s an experience for the squad,” he said.

“I think when we come through this moment, we’ll all be stronger individually and collectively. It’s still all to play for.”

The use of “when” and not “if” underlines his confidence.

“The fixtures are still well in our favour,” he reasoned. “We’re relying on nobody else to drop points and it’s all in our hands.

“Since I’ve come to this club, I know what the expectations are and what they have been.

“This is new territory for us, but it’s something that you can’t shy away from. You can’t run – you have to stand up, be counted and relish the opportunity.

“Like I said, it’s all in our hands and we have to get the job done.”

It might be untrodden ground in Saints’ recent history, but the defender has been here before.

In his teenage years, as a Chelsea player on loan at Norwich, Bertrand suffered relegation from the Championship – a setback he now considers an extra string to his bow nine years on.

“Throughout my career, I’ve had highs, lows, happy moments and sad moments,” he reflected.

“I can share those experiences with the team, to make sure we remain calm and focused on our objectives.

“I know we have enough quality. Mentally we’ve learned as a team and I think we’re in a place now to start picking up points and hopefully we can build that consistency to achieve the points that we need.”

The England international now shares those experiences as the leader of the Saints dressing room, having inherited the captain’s armband at the start of February from Steven Davis, who remains sidelined through injury.

“I’m still the same me,” he said. “With or without the armband, I’ve always tried to influence and share my experiences to galvanise everybody and remain positive, even in hard times.

“Getting the armband and that recognition on matchdays is a nice thing, but in terms of my behaviours, they’ve been the same.

“I get very emotionally attached to the situation and the outcomes, but that allows me to really dig deep to analyse things individually and collectively as a team: how I can do better, or how, as a team, we can improve moving forward.”

Bertrand and co. will be backed by a sold-out away end at St James’ Park, with Saints fans travelling the length of the country in support of their team.

It’s a level of dedication and loyalty that has not gone unnoticed among the players.

“It means everything,” Bertrand continued. “We rely on the fans and their support to get us through.

“If the game is a bit tight, they can push us on. When we’ve been working hard, their energy keeps us going.

“If fans vent their frustrations, we’ll go into the changing room and vent our frustrations to each other. That’s football.

“Them being there gives us a solid reminder of who we’re in this for.

“They’re fully behind us. Everybody at the club wants better and wants to do well, and they’re still there selling out stadiums.

“As players, we can take confidence from that and use it to our advantage.”

Three points would certainly make the long journey home from the north east pass a little quicker, and Bertrand is keen to stress how soon the picture can change for the better at the bottom.

“Wins change games, change training grounds, change teams and change the whole atmosphere,” he added.

“It allows you to build that confidence to roll into the next week. If you can achieve that, with back-to-back wins and find that consistency, you’ll see yourselves progress quite quickly in this tight bunch.”

Match Preview: Newcastle vs Saints

Show/hide article…

THE MATCH

Newcastle United vs Southampton

Saturday 10th March, 3pm GMT

St James’ Park

Premier League

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Last weekend’s goalless draw with Stoke saw Saints spurn the first of three opportunities to land a blow on one of their rivals in the bottom half in March with a trip to West Ham to follow this one to St James’ Park.

In sixteenth, hosts Newcastle are one point and one place better off going into Saturday’s game and a decisive result either way would leave a telling mark on the Premier League table.

The Magpies battled to a stirring 1-0 victory over Manchester United in their last home fixture, their first in eight at St James’. Rafa Benitez’s side have not won back-to-back Premier League games there since September.

Manolo Gabbiadini’s late equaliser at Burnley meant that only Tottenham (five) are on a longer current unbeaten away run than Saints going into this weekend.

Newcastle: Benitez will be hoping key man Jonjo Shelvey passes a late fitness test tomorrow while goalkeeper Rob Elliot and defender Jesus Gamez will definitely sit out at St James’ Park. January signing Islam Slimani has been pencilled in for a return against Huddersfield Town at the end of the month.

Southampton: This weekend’s match has come too soon for club captain Steven Davis who will remain out of action for at least another week with a hamstring injury. Longer term absentees Maya Yoshida and Charlie Austin are set to join him on the Saints sidelines.

FORM GUIDE

Newcastle’s previous five:

Liverpool (a) L 2-0

Bournemouth (a) D 2-2

Man Utd (h) W 1-0

Crystal Palace (a) D 1-1

Burnley (h) D 1-1

Southampton’s previous five:

Stoke (h) D 0-0

Burnley (a) D 1-1

West Brom (a) W 2-1 (FA Cup)

Liverpool (h) L 0-2

West Brom (a) W 3-2

TOP PERFORMERS

With five goals to his name so far this term, Dwight Gayle remains the Magpies main scoring threat in a side that has netted just 27 times in 29 matches.

Gayle struck twice at Bournemouth in February only for the Cherries to fight back and earn a 2-2 draw, and his form through the spring will be key to Newcastle’s survival chances.

At the back, Jamaal Lascelles has been one of Benitez’s most consistent performers all season; they are a different proposition with the commanding defender in the starting XI.

Top scorers: Dwight Gayle (5), Joselu (4), Ayoze Pérez (4), Jamaal Lascelles (3)

Most assists: Matt Ritchie (5), Ayoze Pérez (3), Cristian Atsu (2), Dwight Gayle (2).

Mauricio Pellegrino has suggested that Josh Sims could play an important part in his team’s conclusion to the season and the young winger has demonstrated why that is the case in the previous two matches.

It was his cross that led to Gabbiadini’s strike at Turf Moor two weeks ago and his endeavour and energy that made him Saints’ standout performer against Stoke at St Mary’s.

Though left out for the visit of the Potters, James Ward-Prowse has either scored or assisted four times in his last five appearances, all from set-pieces.

Top scorers: Charlie Austin (6), Manolo Gabbiadini (4), Dušan Tadić (4), James Ward-Prowse (4)

Most assists: Ryan Bertrand (3), Nathan Redmond (3), Dušan Tadić (3), James Ward-Prowse (3)

Newcastle v Southampton preview: Jonjo Shelvey could miss relegation clash

Show/hide article…

Newcastle and Southampton meet in a vital relegation scrap at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.

Rafael Benitez’s side start the weekend in 16th, just one place and a single point above their opponents, and know that victory could prove invaluable to their cause.

And the Newcastle boss has told his players to approach each of their remaining nine games as cup finals as they attempt to secure their Premier League status.

He said: “Every game is important. This is the most important because it is the next one, but we have to keep going to the end. We will be trying to win, but we will be doing that until the last one. Every game is a final for us now.”

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino, who has played for and worked under Benitez, insists his players are well aware they are in a relegation scrap and believes they are up to the task of securing their survival.

He said: "It is difficult to talk to the fans and say we are getting better because since January the team lifted performances, but now we need results. That is the reality.

“As a manager I have to think about what to do. We need results but the consequence is what we do on the pitch.”

Newcastle will make a late decision on the fitness of midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, who missed last weekend’s 2-0 defeat at Liverpool with a knee problem, but is back in training and could be included.

Striker Islam Slimani is still working his way back from a thigh problem, while keeper Rob Elliot (thigh) and Jesus Gamez (ankle) are also out.

Southampton will still be without captain Steven Davis, who has missed the last three games with a hamstring problem and faces at least another week on the sidelines.

Defender Maya Yoshida (knee) and striker Charlie Austin (hamstring) remain on the casualty list.

Newcastle came up against a better team in Liverpool the other day, but I think they’ll be all right. You look at them and they’ve got players who, especially Jonjo Shelvey if he plays well, should make sure they’re alright at home and they got a massive result against Manchester United the other week.

Southampton have got four away games on the trot, they’re in the FA Cup against Wigan and when they’re doing that Premier League teams will be playing football, if they win then they’ll be in the semi-final when teams will be playing again.

They could be in a horrible position soon, if they don’t get anything here. They’ll be playing catch-up and will be in the bottom three. They’re missing Charlie Austin, and they seem like a team who want to don’t lose before they win.

Opposition View: Newcastle United

Show/hide article…

The Magpies were accused in some quarters of lacking ambition in their 2-0 defeat at Liverpool last time out.

But Benítez accepts a home game with Saints will demand greater emphasis on attack.

“Obviously Southampton will be different,” he said. “We play at home with our fans behind us. We have to attack and we have to create chances.

“Obviously every game is important to us but these types of games against the teams close to us we have to do well in.

“This is the most important because it’s the next one. Every game is a final now.

“Against a team that’s close to us, we must be sure that we try our best to get three points. We will realise where we are in April or May, because there are a lot of games to play.

“When you play against a top side, the difference is massive. Everything has to be perfect. Against other teams, you can make mistakes and still win.”

Benítez is without goalkeeper Rob Elliot, defender Jesus Gamez and on-loan Leicester striker Islam Slimani, but is hoping to have Jonjo Shelvey available again after the midfielder returned to training.

The Newcastle boss managed Mauricio Pellegrino as a player at Valencia, before appointing his Saints counterpart as a coach, and then assistant manager at Inter Milan.

“We have a good relationship,” Benítez added. “He knows me really well, I know him really well. It will be difficult to do something that the other one is not expecting.”

Newcastle vs Southampton – Premier League preview

Show/hide article…

Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle United host Southampton on Saturday, with just one point separating these sides in the Premier League table.

Southampton under Mauricio Pellegrino have been on a difficult run of form throughout the campaign, recording just one league win since November 26th, against bottom club West Bromwich Albion, though they have accrued nine draws in that time, a league high.

Newcastle have been on a contrastingly strong run of form in 2018, losing just twice in the league to Liverpool and Manchester City, whilst also recording victories over Manchester United and Stoke City. Three points on Saturday could potentially lift the Magpies as high as 13th, as they look to eliminate the possibility of relegation.

Newcastle’s midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has returned to training following a knee injury though will be assessed prior to the visit of Southampton on Saturday. Islam Slimani remains sidelined as well as Jesus Gamez who is out with an ankle injury.

Steven Davis and Maya Yoshida both remain out for the Saints, with hamstring and knee injuries respectively, whilst Charlie Austin is still out for Pellegrino’s side as he continues his recovery from a hamstring problem.

What time does it start?

Newcastle United vs Southampton kicks off at 15.00pm

Where can I watch it?

Highlights will be shown at 22.30pm on BBC1.

Mauricio Pellegrino. Southampton have been on a particularly poor run of form under Pellegrino, and three points against a relegation rival would go some way to alleviating concerns that the Saints could be heading to the Championship. Saturday’s game is a big one for the Southampton boss, and three points could be crucial in ensuring their survival in the Premier League.

Newcastle are on a run of seven games without a victory over Southampton in the Premier League. Their last win against the Saints was at St James’ Park in 2013, in a 4-2 victory.

Last time out, Southampton and Newcastle drew 2-2 in their most recent Premier League clash. Relive the game and the goals here.

Jonjo Shelvey. Newcastle’s former captain has been in frustrating form during the current campaign, showing glimpses of greatness, though underpinned with moments of madness and generally poor discipline. Shelvey needs to start delivering more consistently in the Premier League, and Saturday’s six pointer against Southampton would be the perfect moment to rise to the task.
