Obafemi strikes late as Saints beat Norwich

Show/hide article…

Michael Obafemi scored in stoppage time to clinch a 2-1 victory for Southampton over Norwich City and give their Premier League 2 Division 2 play-off chase a boost.

Seventeen-year-old Obafemi took only 13 seconds to open the scoring, and Saints also took a numerical advantage into the second period as Norwich’s Timi Odusina was sent off on the stroke of half-time.

Norwich goalkeeper Aston Oxborough saved a Jake Hesketh penalty before Adam Phillips equalised with a superb 25-yard free-kick on 77 minutes, but Obafemi had the final say.

With three matches left Southampton are in seventh in Division 2, three points behind fifth-placed Middlesbrough, who occupy the final play-off position.

Norwich are one point and a place behind Saints, but they have played one match more.

Southampton set to appoint new boss in next 24 hours

Show/hide article…

Mark Hughes is closing in on a return to Premier League management at Southampton.

Hughes, sacked by Stoke in January, is Southampton’s No.1 choice to replace Mauricio Pellegrino who was axed on Monday.

Talks between Hughes and the relegation-threatened south coast club have begun and his appointment could be confirmed within the next 24 hours provided they are concluded without a hitch.

Hughes, 54, has been lined up to become manager of the club he played for between 1998 and 2000 and would be supported by his trusted coaching sidekicks Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki.

Goalkeeping coach Dave Watson and senior first team coach Kelvin Davis, who are taking training today, are also expected to stay on and be part of the new coaching setup.

Southampton have moved quickly following Pellegrino’s departure by making their move for Hughes.

Hughes had been identified as an ideal potential successor as Southampton begun to draw up contingency plans when it became increasingly clear that Pellergino’s time was coming to an end.

They have an FA Cup quarter-final at Wigan on Sunday and eight league games left to stave off the threat of relegation starting with a huge clash at troubled West Ham on March 31.

Pellegrino paid the price for overseeing a run of just win in 17 games which left Southampton just one place and one point outside the relegation zone.

Southampton wanted a manager with Premier League experience who could instantly lift a squad who failed to buy into Pellegrino’s methods.

And they feel Hughes fits the bill.

Southampton would be the sixth club he has managed in the top flight after Blackburn, Manchester City, Fulham, Queens Park Rangers and Stoke.

Hughes led Stoke to three successive ninth placed finishes before they dropped to 13th last year.

He was also credited with moving Stoke away from their direct and physical brand of football to a more attractive style of play.

And Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier believes improving the team’s style of play should be the new man’s top priority.

He said: “It [the changes] has to be attacking wise. There has been too much possession-based football without actually threatening the opposition.

“The team is crying out for two up top. All season we have just played with the one and we haven’t created enough chances to win football matches.

“It has got to be a bit more positive. The players have to be encouraged to pass the ball forward quicker and not just keep possession for the sake of keeping possession.”

Speaking to talkSPORT, Le Tissier added: “I think they may have got a little but too complacent and thought they are too good to be in this position go down. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

“Hopefully a new manager will jolt them out of that thinking and get them in the right frame of mind to get them enough points in these last eight games to stay up.”

Southampton’s situation ‘salvageable’ following Mauricio Pellegrino sacking, says Alan Smith

Show/hide article…

Alan Smith says Southampton can still salvage their season, following the sacking of manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

The club sacked the Argentine on Monday after a run of one Premier League win in 17 games, with the club just a point outside the relegation places.

Former Arsenal and Leicester striker Smith told Premier League Daily about the importance of appointing a manager with experience for the best chance of top-flight survival, as well as preparing for the worst case scenario of relegation.

According to Sky sources, Southampton’s search for a new manager is some way from concluding, but Mark Hughes is among the possible contenders to take over at St Mary’s.

“If the worst case scenario was to happen and they got relegated, they don’t want to be changing the manager again to someone who they feel could do well in the Championship,” said Smith."It’s got be someone with experience, and Mark Hughes, no wonder he is top of the list because of that.

“The situation is salvageable and that is their first priority, let’s get a manager in who can keep us safe.”

Smith believes Pellegrino’s departure came at the right time, following a run of disappointing displays, culminated by the 3-0 defeat at Newcastle.

“For them (Southampton), they needed to change it. It was the manner of the performance as well as the defeat against Newcastle,” said Smith.

"There seems to be a lack of fight, players almost seemed to give up - one or two Southampton lads admitted as much.

"When that happens you just cannot see things turning around, so with the international break as well it gives them some breathing space.

“You look at over the past five, six, seven years with the appointments, the choices they’ve made with (Mauricio) Pochettino, Ronald Koeman and Claude Puel - they’ve been on a good run, not so good this time with Pellegrino.”

Southampton face Wigan in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday before the remaining eight Premier League games, a run-in which includes trips to West Ham, Arsenal, Leicester, Swansea and Everton.

Smith said: "They’ve got more away games than home ones and they just have to find a way to pick up points to scrap. It was very much possession-based under Pellegrino, they didn’t work the opposition 'keeper enough.

“We get to this stage, desperation plays a part, we’ve seen it so often and you think ‘where are they going to win?’ So often we’ve seen huge shocks at this stage of the season so they’ve got to keep the faith,” Smith added.

“There’s still a good chance for them.”

Southampton FC news: Mark Hughes leading contender to replace Mauricio Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Mark Hughes is the leading contender to take charge of Southampton.

talkSPORT understands the Welshman is the south coast club’s number one choice to succeed Mauricio Pellegrino.

Pellegrino was sacked on Monday after the 3-0 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday left the Saints just one place and one point above the Premier League relegation zone.

With just eight games left of the season, Southampton want to appoint an experienced Premier League boss and Hughes fits the bill.

Southampton are keen to appoint Pellegrino’s successor quickly too, with an FA Cup quarter-final at Wigan looming on Sunday before a crunch clash with relegation rivals West Ham at the London Stadium on March 31.

Hughes is available having been sacked by Stoke City in January after a poor run of form.

He left with the Potters in the relegation zone but had previously guided the club to three straight ninth-placed finishes.

Southampton FC confident of a quick managerial appointment

Show/hide article…

SAINTS are wasting no time in their attempts to hire a new manager and are confident of naming Mauricio Pellegrino’s replacement very soon.

The Daily Echo understands vastly experienced Premier League boss, Mark Hughes, is the frontrunner for the role at this stage.

The former QPR, Fulham, Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers chief is available after getting sacked by Stoke in January and would be able to come in at a moment’s notice.

That would suit Saints who want a manager on the training ground as soon as possible to begin working on turning around their troubled campaign.

Saints are currently a point above the drop zone after an appalling run of just one win in 17 league games, which led to Pellegrino’s departure late on Monday.

Hughes, 54, has never been relegated as a top-flight manager and has a wealth of experience, having taken charge of nearly 450 Premier League games.

The Welshman left the Potters in the relegation zone in January after a poor run of five defeats in seven league games, and losing to League Two Coventry City in the FA Cup.

Hughes, who played 60 times for Saints in a spell at The Dell from 1998-2000, had been in charge at Stoke for four and a half years.

It is understood that Marco Silva, the former Hull and Watford boss, is not in contention for the St Mary’s role at this point.

Statement: Mauricio Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

As you know, my period in Southampton has finished. From the beginning I tried to do my best every single day, I tried to give back to the club and tried to represent the club with pride.

Some moments we managed this, some moments we couldn’t, but we have been living a difficult season for many reasons. The manager is the face of a lot of decisions and actions, but I always tried to put the club first with my technical staff and the board behind me.

I am really happy with the hospitality of the people of Southampton and the respect you have shown me in every moment during this experience. The fans have been behind us even in difficult games and I am really grateful for your support in those situations.

I have to say thanks to Ralph, to the board, to Les and Ross, all my technical staff and all the Southampton employees. Also to my players, who respected me in every single moment.

I feel so sorry to leave the club in this situation, but when you don’t get results I understand the decision the club has to take.

I wish everyone all the best for the rest of the season, I have enjoyed an amazing experience and I know that Southampton has everything required to move forward.

We March On.

Sincerely,

Mauricio

Mauricio Pellegrino accepts decision of Southampton sacking

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino says he accepts Southampton’s decision to sack him as manager after only nine months in charge at the south coast club.

The Argentinian was appointed as Claude Puel’s successor last June but Saints only managed to win five of their 30 Premier League games under his command.

A 3-0 defeat at relegation rivals Newcastle over the weekend left Southampton just one place and one point above the bottom three and Pellegrino’s axing was confirmed on Monday.

In a statement published on Southampton’s official website on Tuesday, Pellegrino said: 'From the beginning I tried to do my best every single day, I tried to give back to the club and tried to represent the club with pride.

'Some moments we managed this, some moments we couldn’t, but we have been living a difficult season for many reasons. The manager is the face of a lot of decisions and actions, but I always tried to put the club first with my technical staff and the board behind me.

‘I feel so sorry to leave the club in this situation, but when you don’t get results I understand the decision the club has to take.’

The 46-year-old came under increasing pressure as the season progressed, with fans frustrated by his perceived defensive tactics and pundits accusing the players of not playing for him.

Despite not being able to push Southampton up the table, the former Liverpool defender feels the club will soon be moving in the right direction.

He added: "I am really happy with the hospitality of the people of Southampton and the respect you have shown me in every moment during this experience. The fans have been behind us even in difficult games and I am really grateful for your support in those situations.

"I have to say thanks to (Southampton chairman) Ralph (Krueger), to the board, all my technical staff and all the Southampton employees. Also to my players, who respected me in every single moment.

“I wish everyone all the best for the rest of the season, I have enjoyed an amazing experience and I know that Southampton has everything required to move forward.”

Former Hull and Watford boss Marco Silva, himself axed by the Hornets earlier this season, is one of the contenders for the vacancy, along with ex-Saints boss Mark Hughes, who was sacked by Stoke during January.
