Liverpool blamed for Mauricio Pellegrino’s Southampton sacking

Show/hide article…

Southampton have sacked Mauricio Pellegrino after just one win in 17 league games

Southampton dismissed Pellegrino last night after just one victory in 17 league games which leaves the club dangerously close to the relegation.

Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Newcastle leaves the Saints just a place and a point above the bottom three and sealed the Argentine’s fate.

Le Tissier reckons the turmoil surrounding Van Dijk’s future and the persistent links with Liverpool throughout last summer affected the team’s performances early in the season.

Van Dijk eventually moved to Anfield in January for £75m to finally conclude the lengthy, and at times ugly, transfer saga.

Le Tissier, who scored 209 goals for Southampton during his 16 years at the club, said: “I think that was probably something that, looking back with hindsight, the club would probably regret, trying to keep him in the summer.

Exclusive: Mark Hughes the leading candidate for Southampton job after Mauricio Pellegrino is sacked

Show/hide article…

Mark Hughes is the leading candidate for the vacant managerial position at Southampton, with the club working to finalise an appointment over the next 24 hours.

Southampton have approached Hughes after prioritising the need for Premier League experience and an immediate ability to galvanise their flagging squad.

It represents a change of emphasis from the recent appointments of Mauricio Pochettino, Ronald Koeman, Claude Puel and Mauricio Pellegrino from outside of the Premier League but, with eight games remaining to ensure they are not relegated, Southampton’s need is urgent.

The team are one point above the relegation zone after winning only once in 17 Premier League games and there is a strong feeling that they now need a manager who will have an impact, but potentially also fit with a longer term playing philosophy that gives younger players their chance.

Hughes has been out of work since being sacked by Stoke City in January, but the club had previously recorded three consecutive finishes of ninth before sliding last season to 13th.

He has also managed Wales, Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers Fulham and Queens Park Rangers – and is behind only Arsène Wenger, Sir Alex Ferguson, Harry Redknapp, David Moyes and Sam Allardye on the list of most Premier League games.

Football news and transfer rumours LIVE

Show/hide article…

Alvaro Morata has a great chance in Barcelona on Wednesday night to put his recent struggles behind him and be lauded by Chelsea fans forever, writes Frank Lampard.

Morata has been going through a difficult time, but he just needs to look at Fernando Torres for inspiration to do something special at Camp Nou.

Six years ago, Torres raced clear against Barcelona to score with a few minutes to go and guarantee Chelsea’s place in the Champions League Final.

It is for big occasions like this that Chelsea bought Morata from Real Madrid for £58m last summer in the first place.

There is obviously a question over whether coach Antonio Conte will play with a striker or revert back to the ‘false nine’ he used in the first leg.

I would certainly consider picking Morata to lead the line with Eden Hazard and Willian behind.

The striker has to play better than he has done in recent weeks. He needs to be physically stronger and hold the ball up more. He has the physical attributes and technical ability to do this.

But what Morata can also provide is a target for Chelsea players to aim at and someone who can run in behind. He can do that job more naturally than Hazard, who without the responsibility of playing up front can get more involved in the game himself.

What Fernando did in 2012 shows what a recognised striker can give you against Barcelona.

There is that opportunity to play balls over the top to get out.

Make no mistake, Barcelona will dominate possession and squeeze Chelsea high up the pitch.

As a player walking into Camp Nou, you respect the place straight away because of the size of it and the history of the club.

It is very evident from the moment you roll up what you’re going into. The stadium is huge - you feel it dwarfs you.

You feel it mentally and physically. It is a case of how you react and stand up to that unnerving sensation.

I think it is the ultimate challenge. Real Madrid have addressed that balance in the last few seasons by winning the trophy three times, but I certainly found playing against Barcelona the biggest hurdle in my career.

Even with Real Madrid you can get possession, as we saw with Tottenham in the group stage this season.

But Barcelona starve you of the ball so you have to keep concentrating for 90 minutes. The one moment you switch off, they play a ball between the lines and they’re in.

The wing backs for Chelsea are crucial. They can be a great weapon, as long as they get forward. But if they sit back to make it a five man defence throughout, it will invite Barcelona on.

Chelsea have to also make sure they get Hazard and Willian plenty of touches too, to let Barcelona know they have something to worry about defensively.

The key for Chelsea will be when they get the ball back and how quickly they can get it into those two.

The duo can unlock Barcelona by skipping past somebody. Barcelona do give you opportunities on the break because they play so high. If Hazard and Willian can slip past the press, that will open up the pitch.

All the focus ahead of the second leg is on Chelsea, but Barcelona didn’t get the perfect result by getting a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge either. If Chelsea do get a few opportunities, then the Spanish side could still go out.

Keeping Barcelona goalless for as long as possible is obviously a necessity for Chelsea. At 0-0, the players will know that a chance could come at any moment to score and go through.

There will be pressure on the home side and Barcelona don’t know any other way but playing in an attacking style.

They won’t suffocate the game to simply progress on the away goals rule. The atmosphere will change in the stadium the longer it stays at 0-0.

Chelsea need Thibaut Courtois to have a great night too. He is in that bracket of best keepers in the world and Chelsea won’t go through unless he has a good game.

He will have to keep Chelsea in it at times. It’s up to him.

Petr Cech had many big moments six years ago - that’s why he is a hero to Chelsea fans. Courtois can, and must, do the same.

LISTEN: Matt Le Tissier tells he has no interest in taking vacant Southampton managerial position

Show/hide article…

Matt Le Tissier has told talkSPORT he has no interest in taking the Southampton job following the sacking of Mauricio Pellegrino with just eight games to go in the Premier League season.

Pellegrino, the 46-year-old Argentine, was dismissed from his position at St Mary’s on Monday evening, on the back of just one victory in 17 league matches. Saints’ most recent defeat, 3-0 at Newcastle, left the south coast club just one point and one place above the relegation zone.

Pellegrino was appointed last summer to replace Claude Puel, who was adjudged to have performed poorly in his lone campaign in charge of Southampton, but the current Leicester boss ensured the Saints were never fearing relegation.

Southampton wish to get a new manager hired before their FA Cup quarter-final against Wigan, which will be played on Sunday, and Le Tissier joined talkSPORT to react to the sacking.

And when asked if he is interested in the job, Le Tissier replied: “No; not with my lack of coaching knowledge. It’s not a position I’ve ever really coveted.

“I’m quite happy doing the job I’m doing.

“There are all sorts of managers mentioned; Mark Hughes has a lot of Premier League experience and I think that will count in his favour.

“As far as the situation we are in at the moment, I think it makes sense to go with someone who has Premier League experience - who doesn’t have to get to know a new set of players.

“Marco Silva had a good impact at clubs in the first moment he went there.

“There are lots of names being bandied about, but at the end of the day it’s down to the board to decide who they think is best, not just for these eight games, but I’d like to think they made an appointment that is a little bit more longer term than that.”

Pellegrino said after the Newcastle defeat he ‘observed some players who gave up’, and while Le Tiss does not think that is the case, he does feel there is a sense of complacency emanating from a group of players who feel they are too good to actually suffer relegation.

“I think they may have got a little but too complacent and thought they are too good to be in this position go down,” the Saints legend added. “Unfortunately, that is not the case.

“Hopefully a new manager will jolt them out of that thinking and get them in the right frame of mind to get them enough points in these last eight games to stay up.

“It’s not too late [to stay up]. There are still eight games to go, and I think eight clubs have parted company with their manager later than this and still stayed up; I remember Fulham doing it with four games to go a few years back, and it worked.

“We’re not in the relegation zone at the minute so it’s not a disastrous position; we’ve still got our destiny in our own hands.”

Pellegrino sacked - but who next for Saints?

Show/hide article…

The King is dead, long live the King.

So who now for Saints following the sacking of Mauricio Pellegrino?

Here are a few early runners and riders. Give us your suggestions in the comments section below.

Though he couldn’t save Hull from the drop, the bounce effect he had turned them from being doomed for Premier League relegation to getting within touching distance of saving themselves.

A poor spell at Watford which saw him sacked in January has left him in an intriguing position.

His next job needs to work for him, he could not realistically take another team down, and he still has a good enough reputation to be picky, with Benfica supposedly ready to make a move for him in the summer.

If Saints could convince him, then the fact he is out of work makes it, in theory, an easy appointment.

If Saints take the view that there is no way they can afford to take a punt on a manager without considerable Premier League experience, and preferably they get somebody out of work, then Hughes is a strong contender.

The former Saints striker has managed the likes of Blackburn, Man City and, most recently Stoke, where he was eventually sacked.

His experience at a difficult time would be the selling point, but the question would be whether he was a man for the long-term.

The Fulham manager is making quite a reputation for himself.

Jokanovic has been linked with Saints in the past, and fiery Serbian has a burgeoning reputation.

Obviously there would be considerable difficulties in getting him given that he already has a club, and one who are making a concerted push for promotion.

The much travelled midfielder, who played eight times for Saints in the mid-1990s, would represent a colossal gamble, but also fits the mould of the kind of manager the club may aspire to for a long-term appointment.

His remarkable success at Swedish club Osterlunds has thrust him into the thoughts of many a Premier League chairman.

Potter led the club on an incredible rise from the fourth tier of Swedish football all the way to the top flight, as well as winning the Swedish Cup and qualifying for European football.

The Croatian was sacked by West Ham in November 2017 following a poor run of results which culminated in a 4-1 loss at home to Liverpool. However, his first season with the Hammers brought a top-seven finish and with it Europa League qualification.

Their European adventure did not last long, however, as they were knocked out by Romanian side FC Astra Giurgiu in the qualifying rounds.

They finished mid-table the following season and were in trouble when he left the club. Is he somebody Southampton could take a gamble on?

Southampton are not scared of making a left-field appointment, so Shakhtar Donetsk coach Fonseca cannot be ruled out.

The 45-year-old has spoken of his admiration for the Premier League and is believed to have been interviewed by Everton before Sam Allardyce was appointed.

Fonseca, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has a win percentage of just over 78% since taking charge of Shakhtar in 2016, leading the Ukrainian club to Premier League, Ukrainian Cup and Super Cup glory in that time.

He is also a character, making good on a promise to dress as Zorro to a press conference if his side were to qualify from a Champions League group containing Manchester City and Napoli.

Mark Hughes on the brink of becoming Southampton’s new manager

Show/hide article…

Mark Hughes is set to become the new manager of Southampton.

Hughes, who played 52 games for the club at the end of his distinguished playing career, is hoping to be given the job of keeping them in the Premier League.

Southampton moved quickly to approach out of work Hughes to replace axed Mauricio Pellegrino who lost his job on Monday.

Sacked by Stoke, Hughes was waiting for the right opportunity to return.

Hughes only managed to win five out of 22 games, leaving the Potters in the relegation places.

Speaking before his sacking, Hughes said: ‘It is frustrating that the same things are recurring. We need to take in information better than we are.

'We need to recognise situations. We are not where we need to be. Lots of injuries are clearly a factor. We are a little bit too easy to score against and that’s not a good recipe.’

At Southampton, Hughes is expected to be joined by his management staff Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki. The final details are being thrashed out in the next few hours.

His first game could be the FA Cup quarter-final away to Wigan on Sunday. Wigan have already beaten Premier League opposition West Ham and Manchester City.

In the league, Southampton are one point above the relegation zone after a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle on Saturday.

The former Manchester United striker managed his country at the start of his managerial career before moving on to Blackburn Rovers, Fulham, Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers.

Hughes seriously considered taking over the Saints role back in 2004 before Paul Sturrock eventually replaced Gordon Strachan.

Former Watford boss Marco Silva is also being considered for the position.

In 1998, Hughes was signed by Dave Jones for the south coach side for £650,000 as a replacement for David Hirst.

The prolific striker failed to replicate his goalscoring prowess from his United days, netting just twice during his time at Saints which eventually meant he was pushed back into midfield where he helped Jones maintain their status in the Premier League.

Both of Hughes’ goals at Southampton came against Blackburn and Newcastle, with the latter being remembered for a fantastic volley at the Dell in August 1999.

The striker also struggled with disciplinary issues and managed to rack up 14 yellow cards during his first season at Southampton, a tally that hasn’t been reached in the Premier League since.

Following the arrival of manager Glenn Hoddle, Hughes’ time at Southampton ended as he moved on to Everton in March 2000.

Mark Hughes a possible contender for Southampton vacancy

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s search for a new manager is some way from concluding, according to Sky sources - but Mark Hughes is understood to be one of the favourites for the job.

The Saints sacked Mauricio Pellegrino on Monday night, having won just one of their last 17 games - leaving them just a point clear of the Premier League drop zone.

And the experienced Hughes, who made just over 50 appearances for Southampton in his playing days, has been linked with the job at St Mary’s.

Hughes began his managerial career with the Wales national team and has subsequently managed Blackburn, Manchester City, Fulham, QPR and Stoke.

The 54-year-old has never been relegated from the top flight, although he was sacked by Stoke in January following a poor run of form.

Former West Ham manager Slaven Bilic has also been mentioned in connection with the Saints job, but Sky sources understand he is not under consideration.

Former Hull and Watford boss Marco Silva is also seen in some quarters as a contender for the position.

Silva has been strongly linked with a return to his native Portugal to manage Benfica but his agent told Sky Sports News that there is “no truth to the story” and that Silva “doesn’t plan to work in Portugal in the near future”.

Whoever takes charge at Southampton will have a tricky run-in to contend with. Their eight remaining Premier League fixtures include games with Arsenal (a), Chelsea (h) and Manchester City (h).

Meanwhile, the Saints have an FA Cup quarter-final at Wigan on Sunday to prepare for.

It was business as usual at Saints’ Staplewood training ground on Tuesday, with first-team coach and former fans’ favourite Kelvin Davis - who made over 250 appearances in goal for Southampton - taking the session.

How Southampton’s Mauricio Pellegrino gamble backfired so badly

Show/hide article…

The only surprise about the sacking of Mauricio Pellegrino at Southampton is that it took so long to happen.

For four months now they have been drifting lifelessly down the table, heading towards relegation and barely putting up a fight. They have won just one of their last 17 league games – almost half a season – and that was against the only team in the division clearly worse than them: Alan Pardew’s West Bromwich Albion.

For Southampton fans, many of whom travelled up to Newcastle last Saturday but left at half-time with the team 3-0 down, any sense of relief is diluted by frustration that this was not done much sooner. Especially when it has been clear for months that the decision to replace Claude Puel with Pellegrino last summer was a bad one.

Puel, remember, was sacked not for results – Saints were eighth and lost the League Cup final – but for being insufficiently engaging and exciting with players and fans. And yet he was replaced by a man whose cautious, rigid approach brought neither wins nor excitement.

Before Pellegrino started the season one former associate of his told The Independent that the new Southampton boss was an intelligent man who was ultimately too nice to be a top-level manager, and that the players would walk all over him. That is more or less how it played out: he was always well-liked in the dressing room but that is not enough for a team which should be desperately fighting to preserve its Premier League status.

There is talent in this Southampton team but all season they have lacked the direction, focus and drive that a serious manager should be instilling. They never recover from starting games badly, they are out-manoeuvred by smarter opponents and even the defensive shape that was meant to be Pellegrino’s speciality has eroded away.

The whole failed experiment is the first major mis-step during Southampton’s return to the Premier League. They have prided themselves on clever managerial appointments, never picking the obvious candidate, never once even recruiting anyone with any Premier League experience, believing that it is overrated as a quality.

But in Pellegrino Southampton got it wrong and now, with eight games left, they have torn up their principles and are scrambling to find someone with Premier League experience to save them.
