Is this the start of another Saints summer rollercoaster?

Show/hide article…

WELCOME to another closed season circus at Southampton Football Club.

What would this time of year be without the usual transfer speculation whirlwind and talk of managerial change?

It just wouldn’t be the same, would it?

And now there’s a brand new act in town which is helping to provide more twists and turns than an acrobat’s display.

To throw in to the already heavy cocktail of Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Bertrand exit rumours and the constant talk over Claude Puel’s future, there’s now, swinging from the trapeze, the takeover talk.

As if Saints supporters hadn’t already had enough of end of season drama and, as they often label it somewhat ironically on social media, the summer meltdown.

Alas, it is, once again it seems, time for us all to buckle up and ride the St Mary’s rollercoaster all the way through the summer months.

This week things have already started to busy up, to put it very mildly - and it’s only early June!

By Monday we’d already been churned through the grinder with speculation over Van Dijk.

If reports by the Liverpool-linked press were to be believed, then the talismanic defender fancied working under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield and was keen to make the move.

Oh, jolly good, that’s goodbye to Van Dijk then.

By Tuesday, another twist. Saints have had no bids for the Dutchman and, as has previously been said, are adamant that they are in the driving seat with regards to his future. Oh, good, van Dijk stays then.

By Tuesday afternoon, Saints have asked the Premier League to investigate what they believe is an illegal approach from Liverpool for the 25-year-old central defender. A firm stance from Saints, then.

St Mary’s bosses were understood to be seething after a raft of stories from Liverpool connected journalists appeared at the same time on Monday stating that Van Dijk wanted a move to Anfield.

The club’s hierarchy then met to discuss what to do, and took the dramatic measure of reporting the matter to the Premier League.

The circus, by Tuesday, have already wheeled out the lion tamer and, are now, just about to unleash the fire breather.

After the furore of the Van Dijk stuff, Saints legend Matt Le Tissier, in the brief interval between it all, spoke about Liverpool’s approach in trying to clinch the services of one of the club’s prized assets through the press.

“As a Saints fan sometimes it makes me very angry the way the media behave,” he said, “the way certain people behind the scenes try to unsettle the players who have got five years left on their contract.

“It’s disappointing that there’s such a lack of respect for the football club when these teams play in the same league, they’re in the same group.

“They should have a little bit more respect for each other’s football clubs and before you start unsettling a player, get a bid accepted by the club that owns him.

“Once you’ve done that everyone can move along quite happily.”

Just a matter of hours after Le Tissier uttered those words to the Daily Echo, Liverpool dropped a statement of unbelievable content.

It was a humiliating climb-down for them. Not only did they apologise for “any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk”, but they also confirmed that they’d dropped all interest in the player.

In a statement, the Anfield club said: “Liverpool FC would like to put on record our regret over recent media speculation regarding Southampton FC and player transfers between the two clubs.

“We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk.

“We respect Southampton’s position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player.”

The mushroom cloud from this bombshell had not even fully formed when our attentions were once again dragged on to another of the circus’ regular performers: the big change of manager debate.

Reports filtered out from national newspapers that Claude Puel was soon to be sacked.

This instantly reignited the discussions over whether or not the Frenchman will remain in charge for very much longer.

It is understood Puel’s position at Saints remains precarious with the club currently looking at potential replacements before making a decision on the 55-year-old.

The situation remains the same, with the club considering their options as things stand.

That was Thursday’s topic of discussion. Surely there’s nothing more to come?

Well, lo and behold, that was not the case.

Once again, the speculation engine coughed and choked into action as Ryan Bertrand was, once again, linked with Manchester City.

It is understood, however, that no bid is on the table for Bertrand and any talk is just gossip at this stage, with City said to be targeting Monaco’s Benjamin Mendy as their first choice option.

Well, here comes another healthy dollop.

It was Thursday night and, after a brief period of quiet on this particular front, the Chinese takeover talk reared its head once more.

The potential deal involving Lander Holdings and Saints owner Katharina Liebherr was the hot topic as Friday rolled around.

A deal remains in the pipeline but it is understood not to be imminent.

Representatives of Liebherr and Lander Holdings held meetings with the Premier League to discuss the deal and they were followed by investigations by the league in to the suitability of Lander chief executive Gao Jisheng.

It has now been reported that the Premier League has concluded its probe and Gao has passed its owners and directors fit and proper persons test, while other areas of the structure of the deal have been approved.

This summer has already had it all - and it’s only early June!

Just a week in the Southampton Football Club circus.

What will next week bring?

Liverpool gossip: Reds line up Dutch defender after ending Van Dijk interest

Show/hide article…

Liverpool 's hopes of signing Stefan de Vrij have been boosted after the Dutch defender told Lazio he will not sign a contract extension.

Jurgen Klopp is desperate to bolster his backline during the summer transfer window and was keen on Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk.

However, the Reds ended their interest after their rivals made a complaint to the Premier League about their pursuit of the centre-back.

Liverpool have reportedly turned their attention to De Vrij instead, who is rumoured to be keen to leave the Serie A club.

Corriere dello Sport claim the 25-year-old has informed his employers he will not pen a new deal, so Lazio risk losing him for nothing next year if they don’t cash in this summer.

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has admitted lunches with Kenny Dalglish are helping him at Anfield.

Dutchman Wijnaldum is neighbours with Reds legend Dalglish and often gets a debrief from his performances to help him improve, as reported in the Liverpool Echo .

Wijanldum made 43 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side in his debut season after his £25m switch from Newcastle last summer.

The Scot, who managed and played for the Merseyside club, has given help which has also allowed the 26-year-old on international duty as he netted in Holland’s 5-0 World Cup qualifying win against Luxembourg on Friday night.

England Under-20 star Dominic Solanke wants to walk into life at Liverpool with a World Cup medal in his pocket.

Solanke, who is joining the Reds on a free transfer from Chelsea, scored twice for the Young Lions as they came from behind to beat Italy in Jeonju on Thursday.

The 19-year-old has shone for Paul Simpson’s side in South Korea, and is hoping to force his way into Jurgen Klopp’s first team next season - having grown frustrated with a lack of opportunities at Stamford Bridge.

Solanke has impressed in a number of attacking roles in the Far East and is optimistic of claiming success against Venezula on Sunday.

“It’s our time,” said Solanke, speaking to the FA’s official website . “Everyone will be rooting for us back home, so hopefully we can make them proud.”

Lucas could leave Anfield this summer despite being included on the club’s retained list.

The Brazilian signed for the Reds in a £5million deal from Gremio in 2007.

He has featured 345 appearances for Liverpool, scoring seven goals, during his decade-long stay on Merseyside.

However, Lucas is in talks to re-sign for Gremio on a free transfer - the boyhood club he left to move to England in 2007.

He said: "There was an offer from Gremio in January, but I wanted to complete 10 years at Liverpool.

“Now in the window we had a conversation, but nothing official. I do not hide my desire to return to Gremio, but there are several factors.”

Charlie Austin’s wife Bianca hits out at love rival amid affair claims

Show/hide article…

He had been cryptically accused of ‘cheating’ by his wife on Twitter.

And following the speculation her tweet had sparked, details have now emerged claiming Charlie Austin embarked on a two month affair with 22-year-old hairdresser Rissy Gannon.

A source close to the girl has accused the footballer of pursuing Rissy after meeting her in a pub at the beginning of the year, while Charlie’s wife Bianca appeared to confirm his wrongdoing by leaving a scathing ‘character review’ about her love rival on Facebook.

According to The Sun, Charlie, 27, is believed to have been unfaithful and pursued a romance with Rissy, after meeting her in February.

A friend of the hair stylist told the paper of the duo’s affair and that the Southampton F.C player had claimed to Rissy that he was planning on leaving his wife for her.

They detailed how he had been persistent in pursuing Rissy - despite her being reluctant to give in to his advances at first - even buying himself a different phone so he could secretly contact her and arranging for her to visit him in Southampton.

The source explained how Bianca, 26, had then contacted Rissy and quizzed her on her involvement with Charlie, after being tipped off by somebody that had seen the duo together on a night out.

Rissy had chosen not to respond to Bianca, prompting Charlie’s spouse to leave a scathing review on her love rival’s business page on Facebook.

It read: 'Rissy is the sort of person who sleeps with husbands who have wives and kids.

'Rissy is the sort of person who passes sexual diseases.

‘She is the sort of person who drives miles across the country for an easy lay behind wives’ backs when their husbands are away for the night.’

Bianca then claimed Rissy had ‘no personal character’ and gave her a rating of ‘five stars’ for being a ‘dirty s**g’.

Claims of the athlete’s affair come after Bianca had cryptically hinted at her husband’s wrongdoing on Twitter.

At the beginning of June, she had enjoyed a trip to Barbados with Charlie and their two children, but raised eyebrows after accusing her husband of ‘cheating’ on their journey back to the UK.

Bianca had tweeted: ‘When your [sic] sat about to go on a 10 hour flight with you husband and you find out hes been cheating… @chazaustin10 you p_*_*".’

However, the brunette later deleted the message from her page, and instead claimed Charlie had simply embarked on foul play in a game of Monopoly, after former Chelsea striker Leon Knight asked if her claims were true.

She seemed to jest in her response and replied: ‘Pre boarding lounge monopoly blown out of proportion.’

Bianca further fuelled rumours of friction between the pair by changing her photo on the app from one of her and Charlie, to one with a glamorous female pal, and sharing an image of her children, but not her husband, captioned: ‘My World’.

In the days that followed, The Sun reported that she and Charlie had un-followed each other on Twitter - but just 24 hours after their confusing social media encounter, it seems the couple are now re-following one another again.

The pair married at Highclere House, otherwise known as Downton Abbey, back in 2015 - two years after the birth of their daughter, Avabella.

They also share seven-month-old son Hunter and have been together for nine years.

While they were overseas, Bianca had gushed about the ‘amazing’ holiday she’d had with her beau and their brood.

Sharing a sweet snap of the four together, she tweeted: ‘Home time… Barbados you were amazing… we will be back.’

Jack Stephens lands May Player of the Month award

Show/hide article…

Stephens beat off competition from defensive partner Maya Yoshida, Fraser Forster and Oriol Romeu following a string of impressive displays that saw clean sheets against Liverpool and Manchester United.

Speaking after receiving his award, Stephens said: “It’s obviously really pleasing, especially as the fans vote for this.

“It’s pleasing for me that they think that I deserve this award this month and hopefully I can continue that when I come back for next season.

“It’s a nice way to end the season. It’s been a brilliant season for me personally, especially the second half, and this is a great way to finish it.

“I can go off on a positive note and it gives me that extra confidence for when I come back for pre-season.”

The award follows up from Maya Yoshida landing the award in April, and Stephens reserved praise for the Japan international when reflecting upon his favourite moments from the month.

“Liverpool away was a highlight – even though I did give a pen away! But we had some good clean sheets in May,” he added.

“I’ve got to split the award with Maya, haven’t I, because he keeps splitting his awards with me! I’ve got some out of him, so I’ve got to give him back his fair share.”
