Bertrand plays duration of Scotland draw

Show/hide article…

Bertrand was one of two Saints representatives in Glasgow alongside Fraser Forster, who watched on among the substitutes.

He turned in a solid defensive display for Gareth Southgate’s men, who took the lead on 70 minutes through substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The Arsenal wide man drifted in from the right beyond Scott Brown before hitting a thunderous drive through a crowd of bodies and beyond Craig Gordon.

But there was a late twist when Celtic forward Leigh Griffiths stepped up to curl a free-kick beyond the grasp of Joe Hart to level things up at 1-1.

And just two minutes later, Jake Livermore bundled Chris Martin over in a similar spot to earn another free-kick which Griffiths despatched into the top left corner.

With Scotland heading for a historic victory, the Three Lions rallied in stoppage time and when Raheem Sterling sent an inviting ball into the box, captain Harry Kane ghosted in and steered the ball past Gordon to earn a share of the spoils.

If Liverpool meet Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk valuation, they will shake hands - pundit

Show/hide article…

Could Southampton star Virgil van Dijk still join Liverpool this summer?

Last week Liverpool insisted they have ended their interest in the Saints defender following weeks of fierce speculation.

The Reds apologised to their Premier League rivals about the ongoing rumours and closed the book on a possible swoop.

Despite Liverpool’s public statement, reports have continued to link Van Dijk with a switch to Anfield in the coming weeks.

The 25-year-old, who is rated between £50m and £60m, is wanted by a host of top teams but is most keen on moving to Merseyside.

Davis helps Northern Ireland to vital victory

Show/hide article…

Davis, who played the full 90 minutes, also went level with David Healy as the third-highest capped Northern Ireland international with 95 appearances.

The Group C clash looked to be heading towards a stalemate after Azerbaijan had squandered opportunities through Ramil Sheydaev and Afran Ismayilov.

But Stuart Dallas registered his first international goal two minutes into injury time with a right-footed effort after being teed up by Jonny Evans.

The result means Michael O’Neill’s men move on to 13 points from their six games so far and remain in second place behind Germany.

Gardos watches on in Poland defeat

Show/hide article…

The visitors were behind on 29 minutes when Robert Lewandowski was fouled by Cristian Sapunaru in the box, and the forward dusted himself down to convert from the spot.

Lewandowski added a second when he headed home Piotr Zielinski’s cross, before completing his hat-trick with another spot-kick after Zielinski was fouled by Alin Tosca.

Bogdan Stancu pulled one back in the 77th minute, but it was not enough to spark a comeback for Romania, who now sit fourth in the Group E standings.

Novak Djokovic and the great fall: The Serbian’s slide is a mystery

Show/hide article…

The thrill of some of the tennis that Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray served up in the first semi-final of the French Open on Friday afternoon is still fresh in the memory.

As so often in the last 10 years or more of men’s tennis, just watching a match is like witnessing two people performing miracles game after game after game.

One rally towards the end of the fourth set was leap-off-the-sofa unbelievable. It ended with Wawrinka, under pressure on the baseline, somehow conjuring a drop-shot of staggering genius. It took me a replay to realise he meant it. Oh, he meant it.

There was plenty more of that kind of stuff, not to mention the physical ordeal Wawrinka and Murray endured in a five-set epic that lasted four hours, 34 minutes.

Four hours and 34 minutes of playing like that and a canon of similar works makes men’s tennis players about the most impressive athletes in the world right now, but it still felt as if there were something missing about the last four at Roland Garros this year.

Not because Roger Federer wasn’t there, because clay has never been his best surface anyway and this year everyone knows he gave the tournament a miss so he could save it all up for another big crack at Wimbledon.

The absence of Novak Djokovic from the closing stages of the tournament, though, was altogether different.

It was the first time for seven years he had not made the semi-finals in Paris, and his exit in the quarter-finals completed one of sport’s strangest narratives.

A year ago, Djokovic held all four of the Grand Slams simultaneously. Now he holds none. There is a horrible compulsion about watching the greats age and fail but their decline is normally explained by the advance of the years or the ravages of injury - see Tiger Woods and Wayne Rooney.

Not so with Djokovic. His retreat is mired in sad mystery. It is not quite the same as an old fighter getting beaten by a journeyman fighter month after month but it is getting there. Djokovic is reeling. The mental and physical supremacy he once enjoyed has gone and younger, more confident, less talented men are picking him off.

Djokovic only turned 30 last month. He is still in his prime - he should be, anyway - but things have been going wrong since Wimbledon last summer.

It felt odd witnessing what we now know was the beginning of the fall. In his round-of-32 match against Sam Querrey at the All England Club, it soon became clear something was wrong.

His tennis and his behaviour were erratic. When he lost the second set 6-1 to fall two sets behind, the ambulance-chasers among us rushed to the Press seats on Court No1, intrigued by the prospect of a huge upset.

Djokovic was the undisputed king of the sport back then. The mere fact he had fallen behind in a match was worthy of note. A few weeks earlier, he had become the first man since Rod Laver to hold all four Slams at the same time when he won the French Open at Roland Garros. That was his 12th Grand Slam victory.

People had started to wonder whether we might be watching the greatest. It seemed then that Djokovic was unstoppable and that the marks set by Federer and Rafael Nadal might be within his reach. He was on a roll which seemed to be gathering momentum.

Djokovic won the third set against Querrey and it seemed that the alarm was over and it had just been a blip. Some of the ambulance-chasers melted away, but Djokovic was not right. He looked in turns haunted and listless.

Some of his returns looked almost like tanking, the term bestowed on a series of shots that are so carelessly and recklessly played they give the impression a player has either lost interest in the match or is so dispirited he just wants to get off court.

Djokovic still produced some moments of brilliance, but he lost the fourth set tie-break and with it the match. His golden run was over. His hopes of winning the calendar Grand Slam had been dashed.

Less than 12 months on, all Djokovic’s titles are gone. The last of his Slams was stripped away from him on the red clay in Paris last week when he was humiliated in straight sets 7-6, 6-3, 6-0 by the brilliant young Austrian, Dominic Thiem.

It was the manner of the defeat too. John McEnroe was shocked by the reigning champion’s deportment.

‘I don’t remember seeing a time in the last six to eight years when Novak mailed it in,’ said McEnroe. ‘He basically gave up. It looked in the third set like he just didn’t want to be out there.’

Djokovic was so good so recently that his defeats are still met with stunned surprise. We search for explanations and sometimes word comes back in the form of either innuendo or rumour, but no one has a convincing answer for why the Serb has fallen from the pinnacle and is still tumbling.

This week, for the first time in eight years, he will slip outside the top three in the world rankings. The tennis court is an unforgiving theatre when things start to go wrong. There is no hiding place like there might be on a football pitch. The sport demands such high levels of fitness and concentration that if either is lacking, a player can get badly exposed.

It has been hard to watch Djokovic as he flails but there is always hope of recovery. He is too good for there not to be.

On Sunday, his old adversary, Nadal, will try to claim his 15th Grand Slam title when he takes on Wawrinka on the red clay. Djokovic would be three behind him then and six behind Federer, but age is on his side.

He has always been the third man, always in the shadow of the two greatest players the game has ever seen. Before that loss to Querrey at Wimbledon, he had started to change that and, if he gets his mojo back, he can change it again.

It is an old line but Liverpool’s main offence in their illicit pursuit of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk is that they got caught.

I’m not defending them for the way they approached the Dutchman without talking to his club first but the reality is that almost every transfer happens after a player has been tapped up.

Either the buying club contacts the player’s agent, or a player from the buying club contacts the target directly, or the manager from the buying club sounds the player out.

There are other variations, too. It is almost impossible to police. So take a bow Liverpool for botching it so badly that they actually got found out.

Nolito says his daughter’s skin colour changed because the weather was so bad in Manchester. Really?

I suspect his unhappiness may be more to do with the fact that he often performed poorly for Manchester City and lost his place. When you’re not playing well, the sun never shines.

City have no intention of reviving Van Dijk interest following Liverpool U-turn

Show/hide article…

Manchester City no intention of reviving their interest in Virgil van Dijk.

Southampton captain Van Dijk has been left in limbo at St Mary’s after Liverpool pulled out of a £60million attempt to buy him when the Saints complained to the Premier League that the Merseysiders had made an illegal approach.

The Reds were buoyant in the belief that they had beaten both City and champions Chelsea to the 25-year-old defender’s signature and that they were about to make him the world’s most expensive defender in the world.

Southampton have now slapped a £70million asking price on the centre-back’s head.

Sources at City insist they dropped their interest in Van Dijk once it became clear that the Saints had hiked their valuation to beyond £50million.

It seems Liverpool were the only club to go above that figure – but miscalculated Southampton’s resolve to keep the player.

City will continue to monitor Van Dijk’s situation but are not interested at the price currently being quoted.

Tadić and Gabbiadini set for qualifying action

Show/hide article…

Tadić will be hoping to continue his scintillating form in World Cup qualifying for Serbia when they host Wales in Group D at Crvena Zvezda Stadium (7.45pm BST).

The diminutive playmaker has been key in helping his country to top spot in the standings, after scoring four goals and setting up seven of their 12 goals.

Elsewhere, Manolo Gabbiadini is in the Italy squad that will take on Liechtenstein at Udinese’s Dacia Arena in a 7.45pm kick-off.

Gabbiadini came off the bench late on in the 3-0 friendly win over Uruguay on Wednesday, making an immediate impact when he assisted Éder.

Giampiero Ventura’s side are second only to Spain in Group G, with both sides on 13 points from five games.

2016/17 Season Review: April

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel’s men were the aggressors early on and after 15 minutes they thought they had broken the deadlock when Jay Rodriguez latched on to Nathan Redmond’s pass to finish past Artur Boruc, only to be ruled offside.

Dušan Tadic saw his curler strike the outside of the post, while Bournemouth also had chances of their own through Joshua King and Benik Afobe.

Late on, the game’s biggest talking point came when Ryan Bertrand was deemed to have brought down Ryan Fraser in the penalty area by referee Jonathan Moss.

Harry Arter stepped up before slipping at the vital moment and ballooning his shot well over the crossbar.

Despite plenty of endeavour in the closing stages to win it, Saints would have to settle for a share of the spoils.

However, that was not to be the case a few days later when they channelled that frustration to storm back and beat Crystal Palace at St Mary’s.

The in-form visitors, who were fresh off the back of a superb away success at Chelsea, took the lead through Christian Benteke just after the half hour mark.

But Nathan Redmond’s equaliser on the stroke of half-time teed up an exhilarating second period.

The search for something decisive to show for their dominance proved elusive until seven minutes from time, when Jack Stephens’ shot found its way to Maya Yoshida who made no mistake from close range.

Just two minutes later, James Ward-Prowse supressed any lingering nerves when he slammed home Cédric’s right-wing cross to make it 3-1.

An away trip to West Brom followed, where Jordy Clasie’s solitary strike helped strengthen the grip on a fourth successive top-8 finish.

Dušan Tadić teed up the Dutchman on 25 minutes and his unstoppable drive was reminiscent of his EFL Cup goal against Arsenal.

Such good form was punctuated by a 3-0 home defeat to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, with goals from Vincent Kompany, Leroy Sane and Sergio Aguero.

The penultimate game of the month came against eventual champions Chelsea at Stamford, where, despite a good display, Saints were beaten 4-2 with Oriol Romeu and Ryan Betrand on target.

April concluded with the visit of Hull City to St Mary’s, where only a late Eldin Jakupovic penalty save from Dušan Tadić denied Southampton a third win.
