Nathan Redmond: England starlets set for big impact in Premier League next season

Show/hide article…

The Southampton star, who made his full debut for the seniors against Germany in March, leads the Under-21s into action against Sweden tomorrow at Euro 2017.

Redmond is one of several key men in Aidy Boothroyd’s squad, like Saints team-mates James Ward-Prowse and Jack Stephens, who are already regulars at club level.

Arsenal pair Rob Holding and Calum Chambers and Sunderland keeper Jordan Pickford, who is on the verge of a £30m switch to Everton, also have plenty of top-flight experience.

But Redmond believes they’ll soon be making an even bigger impact – and insists we’ll see more of the likes of Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham and Everton’s Mason Holgate next season too.

He said: “I hope so. You look at the bulk of this squad now, Jordan Pickford, Rob, Calum, Tammy has had a wonderful season at Championship level at Bristol City.

“Everyone is ready, it’s just being given the opportunity. A lot were ready beforehand.

Redmond insists England’s young stars are ready for the Premier League

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond insists England’s young stars are ready to shine in the Premier League.

The England Under-21 winger believes they deserve a chance in the top flight after success this summer.

The Under-20s won the World Cup on Sunday while a mixed age group retained the Toulon Tournament title and the Under-17s were runners-up at the European Championships in May.

Aidy Boothroyd’s Under-21s side are preparing for Friday’s Euro 2017 opener against holders Sweden in Poland and Redmond wants age group success to be rewarded with Premier League starts.

‘I hope so. You look at the bulk of this squad now, Jordan Pickford, Rob Holding, Calum Chambers and Tammy (Abraham) has had a wonderful season at Championship level at Bristol City,’ said the Southampton man.

'Everyone is ready, it’s just being given the opportunity. A lot were ready beforehand. I’ve been playing football in the Championship or the Premier League for the last four or five years.

‘I think a lot of people around me were ready for it but just weren’t given the opportunity. Now young English players are given the opportunity at Premier League level and Championship level.’

Sunderland’s Pickford is primed for a £30million move to Everton while Holding helped Arsenal win the FA Cup and Alfie Mawson impressed in Swansea’s survival bid.

Redmond made his senior England debut against Germany in March after joining Southampton from Norwich for £10million last summer.

The 23-year-old has already made 255 appearances since his debut for Birmingham in 2010.

Redmond has reaped the rewards of playing regularly and feels the successes of the young England squads has put summer into sharper focus.

‘We’re a bit more conscious of it. We’ve always had good young players through the development teams but you’re just seeing it now,’ he said.

‘Three, four or five years ago you were talking about England not having any good young players and now we’re seeing the Under-20s win, we won Toulon last year, the Under-19s have won it this year. The seniors are doing well, we’re doing well. You’re seeing it in bulk now.’

England have been in Kielce since Monday and also face Slovakia and hosts Poland in Group A next week.

It has been a relaxed but focused environment for the Young Lions and Redmond revealed watching dating show Love Island in their down time is the squad’s guilty pleasure.

He added: 'Yeah, I reckon so! I managed to get it on the laptop so a few of the boys were round watching it. It’s another thing which keeps everyone together.

‘We have games rooms and a lot of stuff to keep us occupied. A lot of the boys appreciate the downtime and chilling out. When you’ve got time to take your mind off football you take it.’

5 replacements for Claude Puel at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has been sacked by Southampton.

The Frenchman guided the club to eighth in his first season in charge.

Southampton were also beaten by Manchester United in the EFL Cup final but that wasn’t enough for Puel to keep his job.

The search now begins for his successor as Southampton seek their fourth manager in the last five seasons.

Here are the candidates to replace Puel.

Tuchel is the favourite to replace Puel after leaving Borussia Dortmund.

The 43-year-old spent two seasons with the Bundesliga club and won the DFB-Pokal last term.

He had been linked with Bayer Leverkusen but ruled himself out of the running.

Tuchel would be a major coup for Southampton, if they can lure him to St Mary’s.

The Dutchman has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs in recent years.

He lasted just a few months with Inter Milan last term but has been linked with Southampton and Crystal Palace.

The former Liverpool defender and coach is another name to be linked with the post.

Pellegrino is on the lookout for a new role after leaving Alaves at the end of last season.

Like De Boer, he has been linked with the vacancy at Selhurst Park.

The former Manchester United defender enjoyed a fine season with Reading.

A play-off final defeat to Huddersfield saw the campaign end on a sour note but the Royals will be up there next term.

Could Stam be in the Premier League before that?

Sousa is currently without a job after leaving Fiorentina.

The ex-Swansea and Leicester boss has been replaced by Stefano Piolo at the Serie A club and could be lured by a return to England.

An outsider for the post having never managed in the Premier League.

SO, Claude Puel has gone.

Sky Bet have listed odds for the next Saints manager, which you can see by scrolling through the gallery above.

And a word of warning - there are some Portsmouth connections in there!
