Southampton sack Claude Puel after a single season at St Mary’s

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel was last night sacked by Southampton. The Frenchman was axed after just one season in charge at St Mary’s.

Southampton chiefs pulled the trigger after agreeing a pay-off with Puel, who had two years left on the deal he signed last summer, and following an end of season review.

Puel led Southampton to the EFL Cup final and an eighth-placed finish.

He hoped that, along with the work he did developing some of the club’s youngsters, would be enough to keep him in a job.

But he paid the price for losing the fans and many of his players.

Southampton and Puel were booed off after the final game of the season against Stoke which meant they finished the season without scoring in their final five home games.

Puel also came under fire for the style of football Southampton played during his reign while many of his players were unhappy with his methods.

A Southampton statement said: “Southampton Football Club can today confirm that it has terminated the contract of Claude Puel with immediate effect.

“Everyone at Southampton would like to express our thanks to Claude for his hard work and commitment this year. The highlight of the season was a memorable day at Wembley in the EFL Cup Final, a day our fans will always treasure.

“We wish Claude well for the future. The search for a new management team is underway. We are confident that we will find the right fit in line with the long term vision of the club.”

Claude Puel: Southampton sack manager after one season in charge

Show/hide article…

Southampton have sacked manager Claude Puel after one season in charge.

The 55-year-old Frenchman, who was appointed in June 2016, led Saints to eighth in the Premier League last season despite losing 16 games.

They also reached the League Cup final, their first major final since 2003.

A Southampton statement read: “The search for a new management team is under way. We are confident that we will find the right fit in line with the long-term vision of the club.”

Puel spent four years as manager of Nice before replacing Ronald Koeman, who led Southampton to sixth in the table in 2015-16.

Southampton were beaten 3-2 by Manchester United in the League Cup final in February.

They managed only one win in their final eight league matches of the season and scored one goal in the last six games.

The club statement read: "Everyone at Southampton would like to express our thanks to Claude for his hard work and commitment this year.

“The highlight of the season was a memorable day at Wembley in the EFL Cup final, a day our fans will always treasure.”

Puel is the third manager to leave Southampton in the past three years, following Mauricio Pochettini’s departure for Tottenham and Koeman’s move to Everton.

Claude Puel sacked by Southampton with Thomas Tuchel on list of potential replacements

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has been sacked as the manager of Southampton after the club concluded that the players and fans were not behind him sufficiently and that he would not lead them to regular European football.

As revealed by The Telegraph, Puel’s future has been in serious doubt since the end of April and the club have already drawn up a short-list of potential replacements that includes the former Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel. However, Southampton are also considering other candidates and no decision is likely within the next week.

Although Puel’s sacking has surprised some onlookers following a season in which the club reached the League Cup final and finished eighth in the Premier League, there have been reservations about his methods among both fans and crucially the players.

Puel’s squad rotation upset captain Jose Fonte before Christmas and he was ultimately sold in January to West Ham United, while a final tally of just 41 goals was the lowest in the top half of the Premier League. Sunderland were the only club who scored fewer home league goals and Southampton also finished with 17 less points than under Ronald Koeman the previous year.

Even so, the decision was not taken lightly and, while Puel’s situation has looked genuinely ominous since the middle of May, there was still a small chance of him continuing as late as last week.

Southampton sack Claude Puel

Show/hide article…

Southampton have sacked manager Claude Puel after one season.

The 55-year-old Frenchman’s future had been in doubt despite Saints finishing eighth in the Premier League and reaching the EFL Cup final, having succeeded Ronald Koeman who left St Mary’s for Everton last summer.

Sky Sports News HQ reported last week that Saints director of football Les Reed was considering potential replacements after concluding his end-of-season review for chairman Ralph Krueger.

And a club statement on Wednesday read: "Southampton can today confirm that it has terminated the contract of Claude Puel with immediate effect.

"Everyone at Southampton would like to express our thanks to Claude for his hard work and commitment this year. We wish Claude well for the future.

“The search for a new management team is underway. We are confident that we will find the right fit in line with the long-term vision of the club.”

Puel, who was boss at Nice until he moved to England’s south coast last summer, won only 12 of his 38 Premier League games last season and they finished only six points above 17th.

After reports Southampton were considering Marco Silva, who has taken over at Watford, Puel was backed by Chelsea’s Eden Hazard as one of the world’s top coaches, the Belgium star having worked with him at Lille.

Puel would not comment on persistent reports he could be replaced as the season drew to a close and said he wanted to continue as manager at St Mary’s.

Southampton have sacked manager Claude Puel with immediate effect.

The Frenchman took over at St Mary’s last summer and guided Saints to the EFL Cup final, where they lost to Manchester United, and an eighth-placed finish in last season’s Premier League.

But the board has opted to make a change, dismissing the former Lyon and Nice boss. A statement from Southampton said the club had “terminated the contract of Claude Puel with immediate effect”.

It continued: "Everyone at Southampton would like to express our thanks to Claude for his hard work and commitment this year.

Saints sack Claude Puel

Show/hide article…

SAINTS have this evening announced that they have sacked manager Claude Puel after just one season in charge.

St Mary’s bosses have been deliberating over the future of the Frenchman and, after an end of term review, decided that he was no longer the right man to take the club forward.

It is understood Saints’ hierarchy have actively been hunting for a replacement in the weeks after the campaign finished.

Puel led Saints to an eighth place finish in the Premier League and to the League Cup final, but the lack of goals and conservative style of play have contributed to the club’s decision to dismiss the 55-year-old just one year into a three year contract.

A club statement said: "Southampton Football Club can today confirm that it has terminated the contract of Claude Puel with immediate effect.

"Everyone at Southampton would like to express our thanks to Claude for his hard work and commitment this year.

Southampton keep tabs on Thomas Tuchel after sacking Claude Puel

Show/hide article…

Thomas Tuchel is among the candidates to replace Claude Puel at Southampton

Saints have already sounded out the German about taking charge at St Marty’s and are willing to make the former Borussia Dortmund chief the highest paid boss in their history.

Landing Tuchel – who was axed by Borussia Dortmund days after leading them to victory in the German cup final – would be a major coup for Saints.

As first revealed by Starsport Puel has been a dead man walking for several weeks after a series of bust ups with his players and unrest from Saints fans.

Vice-chairman Les Reed made the final call to dispense with his services following a protracted end-of-season review into his and the team’s performance.

Reed feared a mass summer exodus if Puel remained in charge, with Manchester City target Ryan Bertrand and Dusan Tadic – wanted by Liverpool – among those senior stars unhappy with his methods.

The Frenchman only arrived on the south coast last summer after Ronald Koeman quit to join Everton.

COMMENT: Adam Leitch on the sacking of Claude Puel

Show/hide article…

Whether you wanted Claude Puel to remain in charge of Saints or not, given the way the last few months have gone the club made the correct decision in sacking him.

That’s not to say it was the right thing to do from a football sense, or that a new man will do any better. Those are points of contention right now.

But when the board – not to mention the fans and parts of the dressing room - lose faith in a manager, as Saints so clearly had done with Puel, then it is the right thing to do to make a clean break.

The very worse situation is to cling on and hope for something better to happen. It never does, and if you don’t believe in your manager from the very top then it seeps down and infiltrates everything.

Inevitably the sacking ends up coming anyway, just at a more inopportune time – if anyone needs an example remember what happened with Paul Sturrock.

Claude Puel will no doubt look back on his year at St Mary’s with a feeling of ‘what on earth happened there?’ He leaves with no doubt a healthy pay-off, and, despite being sacked, his reputation firmly intact. He will have no problem heading back to France and getting another good job.

The odd situation at St Mary’s is that most neutrals are stunned by this development.

They look at Saints, especially shorn of Charlie Austin and Virgil van Dijk for half the season, and reckon eighth, even given a significant points drop from the previous year’s tally, and the EFL Cup final is a fine effort.

Indeed, there is every reason to think that too.

Put simply, anybody who thinks that what Puel had to work with last season was good enough to finish above any of the top seven is deluded. Therefore, he achieved the best result possible.

However, nearer the club things didn’t feel so rosy.

Puel’s communication problems meant that he was never really able to properly explain what he was trying to achieve – and it is amazing how a good talker can buy themselves a lot of grace with the fans.

Therefore the only thing to judge Puel on was performances and results. Results were acceptable but patchy, the notable exception the horrific exit from the Europa League.

Given the weakness of the group Saints found themselves in this was far below what should have been expected.

Performances in general were often dour, especially at home. Sadly most Saints fans don’t get to see their club on the road too many times, which was a shame for Puel as it was where his counter attacking style played out best.

But at St Mary’s it was not good. The entertainment factor was sadly lacking, and if you aren’t winning every game people find that hard to forgive.

Sadly for Puel, the end was not a dignified one.

Say what you like about him as a manager, but he is a decent person, and gave his all for Saints in his year here.

To hear the abuse he got on the final day of the season was gut wrenching. The handful of us who saw him afterwards could see how emotional and hurt he was by what was cruel and undeserved treatment.

And it didn’t look great also that the club took a long time over this decision. Yes, it was off season, but even so the axe felt so inevitable, and his position had become so untenable as a result of the wait, that the end could have come sooner.

But in football ‘the king is dead, long live the king’ and now the hunt for a successor gears up.

Saints have a very short shortlist. They wouldn’t have pulled the trigger if they didn’t think they could get what they want.

Going high profile would be popular with the fans but would open up a whole new can of worms in terms of the structure of the club, which is why there weren’t many tears shed from upon high when Ronald Koeman left.

But if you go for somebody who ticks all the other boxes Saints want, then you end up with…Claude Puel. Or at least another version of him.

And if eighth and the EFL Cup final isn’t good enough, then, barring an injection of money into the squad, the new man has a tough job to better Puel, even if the lack of faith in him meant a parting of the ways was the correct course of action.
