Liverpool star Sadio Mane sends message to top four rivals ahead of Southampton return

Show/hide article…

Mane’s Liverpool take on his former club Southampton at St Mary’s later today with the chance to move back up to third.

The Reds will be nine points clear of sixth-place Arsenal with a win on the south coast.

It appears that Liverpool, Tottenham, and Chelsea will fight it out for the final two places in the top four behind the Manchester giants.

And Mane is confident that his side will secure Champions League football ahead of their rivals if they focus on each game as it comes.

He said: “When you take it game by game, I think there’s less pressure.

“For the moment, you have to focus on each game individually and try to win. I think it’s quite easy to focus game by game – and that’s what we’ll do.”

Liverpool team revealed for Southampton clash in the Premier League

Show/hide article…

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is set to hand Virgil van Dijk a start on his return to Southampton.

The Dutchman will take on his former club for the first time since his £75million January move.

Fellow defenders Ragnar Klavan and Alberto Moreno have recovered from muscle injuries to take their places in the squad.

Right-back Joe Gomez is unlikely to feature because of a minor knee problem while midfielder Adam Lallana returns after a thigh problem.

Pellegrino: We must stand together

Show/hide article…

Saints climbed out of the relegation zone last weekend after a 3-2 win at West Brom, and, having also gone six games without defeat across all competitions, Pellegrino says the mood is a positive one.

“I said after the West Brom game that we have greater belief in ourselves now and that is the most important drug in this moment for our team,” he said.

“We have a huge challenge coming up for Liverpool and we want to improve on our last experience at Anfield (when Saints lost 3-0). A different performance is needed because we are playing an amazing side with great quality and we have to be prepared.

“Our mentality now is good. Since January, and in recent games, we are growing. We have to be humble enough to keep improving and acknowledge that we can do better every single weekend. Every step that we take – no matter how small – is going to make a big difference for us.”

Pellegrino also believes the recent 1-1 draw at home to high-flying Tottenham gives Southampton an good indication of what they need to do to be successful against Jürgen Klopp’s side.

“The Spurs game here at St Mary’s will be a useful reference for us; they are similar in their style, dangerous in attack, organised in defence,” he said. “When you play against this type of team, you need to be almost perfect to beat them.

“Our challenge is to play the right way under pressure and move the ball well in small spaces because I imagine the game will be very tight and played at high intensity. Our plan is to press as hard as we can while Liverpool are fast and aggressive in front.

“My feeling now is that my team is much better prepared now than it was at Anfield.

“We have to stand together with the fans and show our energy from the beginning. If we do that, they will get right behind us.”

SAINTS: Bertrand stars in feature interview

Show/hide article…

Ryan Bertrand is not one to crave the limelight.

He’s on social media, but not a prolific user. When he does tweet, it’s rarely about football, and appearances in the press are few and far between.

You could be forgiven for assuming the England man sees football as a job, and that once he leaves Staplewood he turns a blind eye to the beautiful game.

Not so.

Bertrand is a deep thinker on and off the pitch, a religious watcher of football and an authoritative figure in the dressing room.

He loves to talk football, just prefers to keep his views in-house.

It was refreshing, then, to see Bertrand make an impromptu appearance on Match of the Day 2 three weeks ago, following Saints’ 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at St Mary’s.

Still in full kit, he spoke eloquently about the game, discussing his thought processes in and out of possession and analysing phases of play with distinction.

“I never really get the chance, so it was actually nice to get to speak in a little bit more detail rather than just the generic questions when you’re reacting,” the defender told SAINTS.

The dismissive reference to “generic questions” is quite telling. This is a rare opportunity to pick his brain.

Bertrand goes on to discuss how he struggles to get over a defeat, why he took five years to feel part of the England setup, and the time he had to deliver a pre-match team talk to established international stars at Chelsea.

For all this and more, read the full feature interview in Sunday’s edition of SAINTS, the matchday magazine priced at £4.

You can also pre-order, find all previous editions and take out a subscription for the season by visiting saintsmagazines.co.uk.

The Liverpool player set to get more abuse than Van Dijk vs Southampton

Show/hide article…

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren insists he will get more abuse than Virgil van Dijk when the pair return to St Mary’s with the Reds this afternoon.

The Croatian swapped the south coast for Anfield in 2014 and has gone on to make 100 Premier League appearances for Liverpool.

Much has been made of the reception Van Dijk will receive on his first return to his former club following his £75million January switch to Merseyside.

But Lovren reckons he will still cop more flak from the Saints faithful as the Reds look for an important win in their bid to secure a top-four finish.

“I’m still number one!” he told Sky Sports.

"Maybe Virgil is behind me? Let’s see what will happen. Let’s see between me and Virgil who will have the higher decimals. There will be some strange feelings.

"The welcome doesn’t bother me - maybe they miss me or something like that? This is why they are doing it.

“I had a great time at Southampton and will always be thankful for that. I never had any feelings of hate towards the Southampton fans - they helped me and of course, they made some good business.”
