Liverpool squad revealed for Southampton clash in the Premier League

Show/hide article…

Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk is expected to start on his first return to Southampton since his £75million January move.

Fellow defenders Ragnar Klavan and Alberto Moreno have recovered from muscle injuries to take their places in the squad.

Right-back Joe Gomez is unlikely to feature because of a minor knee problem while midfielder Adam Lallana returns after a thigh problem.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino reported no fresh injury problems ahead of Sunday’s match against Liverpool.

Striker Manolo Gabbiadini had been carrying a hip problem last weekend against , where the Italian was an unused substitute in the 3-2 away win.

Charlie Austin, though, remains out as the forward continues to recover from a hamstring injury.

Mauricio Pellegrino says he has found Virgil van Dijk’s replacement

Show/hide article…

Liverpool could have bought Jack Stephens five hundred times over for the world record £75m fee they paid to snare Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.

But Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino believes the academy graduate, who cost a bargain £150,000 from Plymouth as a teenager, has more than filled the considerable void left by Van Dijk’s January exit.

Stephens has even chipped in with three vital goals on his last three appearances and Pellegrino said: 'I think we have got enough players to replace Van Dijk.

'We have got Maya Yoshida, we have got Wesley Hoedt, we have got Jack and we have got Jan Bednarek who is a young player.

'Jack is a home-grown academy player who has got the capacity to be an important player.

'Last season, little by little, Jack was playing more in the second part of the season and that is more or less the same now.

'Without Virgil, Jack has got more possibilities and he has to keep working and remain humble to improve.

‘Obviously, we have the confidence that this player can replace the position that Virgil has left.’

Van Dijk returns to the south coast on Sunday for the first time since his January departure.

Saint’ recent form of six matches unbeaten in all competitions suggests they have not missed the towering Dutchman.

With fellow academy starlet James Ward-Prowse also hitting form, Pellegrino is backing his home-grown talents to keep his team in the Premier League.

The ex-Liverpool defender added: 'With home-grown players, you create a feeling that you are a part of the club and you are really concerned about the situation of the club and the fans.

‘And it is really important because the home-grown players have got an advantage and they are the example for the next home-grown player that will come from the academy.’

Poacher Carrillo can give Saints cutting edge

Show/hide article…

Since Graziano Pelle left for China in the summer of 2016, Southampton have lacked a tall centre-forward, so the capture of Guido Carrillo from Monaco feels like a wise decision.

In a campaign in which goals have not flowed and leading scorer Charlie Austin has struggled for full fitness, it was essential the club brought in a natural finisher who can lead the line.

Carrillo is a typical penalty-box striker. Most of his seven Ligue 1 goals for Monaco last term arrived inside the six-yard area from crosses or rebounds.

As shown below from his record in this season’s French top flight, the 6ft 3in forward has shown expertise at scoring with his head from close range.

The Argentinian’s style should please James Ward-Prowse, Cedric Soares, Ryan Bertrand, Dusan Tadic, Sofiane Boufal and Nathan Redmond.

All six can deliver quality from the wings, sending over a collective 447 crosses this season.

Unfortunately, too many of those crosses have not been converted or met by team-mates.

A good slice of the opportunities that Southampton create are aimed at the six-yard box so it looks as if the 26-year-old is suited to their play.

Carrillo’s forte is attacking crosses, so in theory he should receive plenty of chances in the zones he attacks best.

Ward-Prowse is one of the Premier League’s finest takers of corners and wide free-kicks, so the presence of a centre-forward as dangerous in the air as Carrillo is great news for Saints fans.

While Jack Stephens and Mayo Yoshida have chipped in with two goals apiece this season, they have been the obvious targets.

Having a third physical presence inside the penalty area will set opposing markers a new challenge.

Carrillo will also be handy at the other end of the pitch.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s side have conceded 10 goals from set-plays this term, the fourth-worst record in the PL.

So having Carrillo will help with marking inside the box or to guard the near-post area will be an asset.

If Austin is still seen as first-choice striker when he is fit and available, Carrillo can also be considered a lethal weapon from the bench.

At Monaco he was used to the role of super-sub, which he handled extremely well.

Seven of his 15 Ligue 1 strikes came from the bench, so he is a player who can hit the ground running.

It is pretty clear Southampton’s January recruit offers something fresh. His acquisition makes sense on many levels.

If Liverpool fail to defend crosses properly at St Mary’s this weekend, Carrillo has the skills to punish them.

Liverpool star Dejan Lovren tells Virgil van Dijk: I’m still number one!

Show/hide article…

Lovren and Van Dijk have both left Southampton for Liverpool in recent seasons, completing mega-money moves to Anfield.

The defensive duo could both start at St Mary’s later this afternoon as the Reds take on the Saints in the Premier League.

While Van Dijk left the club in controversial circumstances last month, Lovren reckons he will still be the most hated returnee.

When asked who’s likely to receive more abuse, Lovren told Sky Sports: "I’m still number one!

"Maybe Virgil is behind me? Let’s see what will happen. Let’s see between me and Virgil who will have the higher decimals.

Pellegrino praises fight of home-grown talent in difficult time

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino is grateful for the fight shown by Saints’ home-grown talent during their scrap at the bottom of the Premier League.

The St Mary’s chief believes academy graduate James Ward-Prowse and Jack Stephens, who has been at the club since he was 16 years old, are inspirations to those around them during this relegation dogfight.

Ahead of today’s massive game against Liverpool, Pellegrino knows they have huge value, especially at this difficult time, because the club means so much to them.

“Yes, for sure. I don’t have any doubt about that,” he said when asked if keeping Saints in the Premier League meant more to Ward-Prowse, Stephens and other academy men.

“To create a feeling that you are a part of the club and you are really concerned about the situation of the club, you are really concerned about the fans and you want to improve and you want to grow with the team then you need a group of men behind the players.

“But it has to be with home-grown players and it has to be that you keep the same group for year over year.

“This is the difficult situation for every single manager in the world, the globalisation doesn’t allow us to keep the same group and when the players don’t play, they aren’t happy and they want to change.

“They have got a lot of market now and this is something that is not easy. The diversity is something that is really good but to understand the diversity to settle in a different culture, you need time. And this is the problem right now, we don’t have time.”

Saints have a rich history of bringing through youngsters from the club’s famed Staplewood academy.

However, so often, the products of the youth programme quickly move on to pastures new.

Gareth Bale, Adam Lallana, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Calum Chambers and Luke Shaw are all examples of Saints talent leaving the south coast for other clubs.

Pellegrino knows the likes of Ward-Prowse and Stephens, who have both proved to be top performers of late, are an example to the next generation.

Midfielder Ward-Prowse has netted four times this season, while centre-back Stephens has scored three goals in as many matches. They are both mainstays in the team right now.

“It is really important because the home-grown players have got the plus and they are the example for the next home-grown player that will come from the academy,” he said.

“We have another group of players who are in the reserve team and they can be the example for the rest.”

He added: “Inspire the rest of the home-grown academy but I also think that these players can have a plus because they have been working a lot of the time to have this possibility. When you have got the possibility, you have to translate this on the pitch.”

Southampton vs Liverpool Premier League preview: team news, injuries and suspensions

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk is expected to start on his first return to Southampton since his £75million January move.

Fellow defenders Ragnar Klavan and Alberto Moreno have recovered from muscle injuries to take their places in the squad.

Right-back Joe Gomez is unlikely to feature because of a minor knee problem while midfielder Adam Lallana returns after a thigh problem.

Adam Lallana is in contention for the Liverpool bench against Southampton on Sunday despite his dismissal for the Under-23 team in midweek, manager Juergen Klopp said on Friday.

Lallana has struggled with injury this season and was given a run-out for Liverpool’s junior team against Spurs when he reacted angrily to an aerial clash with 19-year-old George Marsh, grabbing him round the throat.

Klopp has spoken to the England midfielder about the loss of temper that led to his sending-off.

"It’s not nice. I spoke to him, it’s not how it should be. He wasn’t happy about the reaction and I wasn’t either. He’s an option for the squad (on Sunday), maybe not the first XI, " Klopp said.

“He looks fresh and good but we need to settle a bit and use Adam as there are about 18-19 games to go.”

Lallana is one of six Liverpool players signed from Southampton since 2014, with a seventh ex-Saint, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, recruited via Arsenal, a statistic Klopp admitted gives an extra dimension to the game at St Mary’s.

Liverpool head to Southampton today knowing anything less than a win will hit their Premier League top four hopes.

Jurgen Klopp’s side sit fourth as they head to St Mary’s, with Tottenham’s 1-0 north London derby win over Arsenal sending Mauricio Pochettino’s men third in the table - and fifth-placed Chelsea are just a point behind Liverpool.

However, Mauricio Pellegrini’s Saints are in need of points at the opposite end of the table, and have a point to prove having effectively become Liverpool’s feeder club on transfers in recent years - with £75million Virgil van Dijk the latest player to tread the well-worn path from St Mary’s to Anfield.

Southampton host Liverpool with kick-off scheduled for 4:30pm at St Mary’s on Sunday, February 11.

The match is available via Now TV, with a day pass on offer for £6.99.

The game will be televised on Sky Sports’ Premier League and Main Event channels, with coverage from 4:15pm. Sky Sports subscribers can stream the match online via SkyGo and the SkyGo app.

You can follow the action from 1pm with Standard Sport’s live blog.
