Jaïdi calls for speedy Saints recovery

Show/hide article…

The result sees Saints U23s remain in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League-style competition but missed an opportunity to take control of Group B here.

Jaïdi’s side struggled to handle the visitors’ direct approach and rarely threatened to get off the mark at Staplewood campus before Michael Gyasi struck the winner for Cardiff 14 minutes from time.

“I think the start was really poor,” he said. “We didn’t control the game as we normally would.

“We knew before the game that Cardiff would try and play direct but we weren’t ready for it. The boys need to be flexible in these kinds of situations and understand what is needed in any given game.

“We needed to win the first ball and then the second but we didn’t do it.”

A penalty save from Kingsley Latham inside five minutes could have acted as a springboard for the home side to go on and put their visitors under pressure but the young goalkeeper’s fine stop was the only bright spot of the evening for coach Jaïdi.

A quick response is key now for the former Saints defender.

“Kingsley’s save was the most positive thing in the game. He made a great stop and it was a good night for him and a good chance to prove himself. The boys should have used that as a boost early on but we didn’t do that. Even when we won possession, the first pass was slow and just made problems for ourselves.

“We wanted to win tonight and extend the gap between the top two and third but now the competition is very much still on. We’re still top of the group but we need to react quickly and show our real quality in the next game.”

Jurgen Klopp set to leave out Jordan Henderson against Southampton as Porto loom

Show/hide article…

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is poised to leave his captain Jordan Henderson on the bench for Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Southampton as he keeps one eye on next week’s Champions League tie against Porto.

Henderson has only recently returned from a hamstring injury sustained against Arsenal in December, and Klopp is wary of the midfielder playing back-to-back games in such quick succession while he is not yet fully fit.

The first leg of Liverpool’s last-16 match with Porto is on Wednesday and, with the European Cup the club’s only remaining hope of silverware this season, Klopp is set to save Henderson for that fixture.

“Hendo came back against Tottenham but was not 100 per cent because he was injured,” Klopp said. “Can he start both games? I don’t think that would make too much sense, but if we have to do it then we have to do it. It depends on all the other players.

“Jordan can always dig in and his attitude is outstanding so of course he could. That is the only thing we have to plan around but that is because he had an injury, like we do with Adam Lallana. In a normal situation it is no problem but in this specific situation after injury it would not be perfect.”

Klopp, meanwhile, will speak to Virgil van Dijk ahead of his return to Southampton but does not believe the conversation will need to be a long one. The Dutchman is set to be get a hostile reception by the home supporters at St Mary’s on Sunday on his first appearance against his former club following a £75m switch to the Reds in January.

Liverpool were forced to abandon their original pursuit of the Dutch international last summer and publicly apologise for an alleged illegal approach. That caused a period of uncertainty until the transfer window reopened and Van Dijk became Liverpool’s record signing and the world’s most expensive defender.

The drawn-out nature of the transfer was criticised by the Southampton’s hierarchy and fans alike. However, Klopp appears to have sufficient faith in the 26-year-old to handle the intimidation that any advice he passes on will be brief.

“It is not that I ask ‘do you want to play?’ You say a few words,” Klopp said. “It’s not a long talk or whatever. It is nothing really special. I accept it is quite a special situation as it was the transfer of the winter transfer window so that’s all.

“We have to accept it how it is: loud, not nice maybe, but still we have to play football.”

Klopp admits Van Dijk is still adjusting to life at Anfield and believes the best is yet to come from him. “The club is definitely different,” Klopp explained. “Liverpool is an outstanding, big club and the boys have to do a lot of things around training, more than the other clubs but it is all good.

“He has all the football tools, he is getting better and better. He was not 100 per cent fit when he arrived here but everything will be better in a few weeks. He will at one point lead this line but at the moment he is not 100 per cent used to it.

“That’s how it works when you come in the middle of the season. He was not happy after the last game with the last situation. In another club, an hour after the game not a lot of people talk about it. In Liverpool, you have enough to talk about it for the whole week.

“But he is a good player and we are absolutely happy having him around. He is good and already he will be much better.”

Pellegrino wants Saints fans to avoid wasting time on Van Dijk

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino has urged Saints’ supporters to rally behind his players rather than jeer Virgil van Dijk on his return to St Mary’s with Liverpool on Sunday.

The Netherlands international left Saints under a cloud last month in a world record (for a defender) £75m switch to Anfield, having pushed for the exit door in the summer months during a protracted transfer stand-off.

Saints fans have previously lobbed taunts at Liverpool’s contingent of former St Mary’s men, especially centre-back Dejan Lovren, who left in bad blood back in 2014 in a £20m transfer.

“One group of people can be grateful for him and one people can say ‘boo’, but it’s not about this. Every single person has got an opinion and we have to respect that,” said Pellegrino about Van Dijk’s return with Liverpool in Sunday’s Premier League match.

“I think our fans are really respectful with ex-players and I prefer that our fans are focused on supporting our players and get behind us.

“Our players must be focused and give to our supporters with good feeling, attitude and energy to try to be 100 per cent on the pitch.”

Pellegrino, who has led his side on a six-game unbeaten run in all competitions, believes Saints should be thankful to Van Dijk, especially as the money brought by his departure led to the club’s capture of £19.2m striker Guido Carrillo from Monaco in January.

“I think we have to be grateful with him and now we have to think that Virgil is part of the past. He did well in our club and he left some profit to the club and we have to be grateful.

“But Virgil is part of the past and we have to focus on our game and what we have to do.”

Since Van Dijk, who joined Saints from Celtic in 2015 in a £13m deal, left for Merseyside, his old club have been beaten just once in eight games.

However, Pellegrino does not believe there is a link between the Dutchman leaving and their upturn in fortunes.

“I don’t think so. We’ve won, we’ve lost and drawn with Virgil and we’ve won, we’ve lost and we’ve drawn without Virgil,” he said.

“We cannot use this as an excuse and the evolution of the team has to be about the small situations.

“But the small situations are part of the context but we can’t use that as an excuse. It would be really easy for us to not take the responsibility and punish someone else.

“Sometimes it’s easy but we have to take our responsibility and, okay, when we don’t play well it’s about us, not about one player.”

Saints were defeated 3-0 by Liverpool at Anfield in November, with Mohamed Salah netting twice in a dominant display.

Although they were beaten by Swansea City recently, Jurgen Klopp’s side are third in the Premier League and are the second highest scorers in the top-flight.

Saints are in good form themselves, having ended their 12-game Premier League winless run against West Bromwich Albion last weekend, but Pellegrino admits his team have to be “perfect” to get anything from this game.

“It was an important game (the West Brom win) but we have to continue and now we have a massive game in front of us,” he said.

“Liverpool is a huge possibility for us but a really tough side. We want to learn and we want to improve from our experience away and we have to improve in different aspects in the way we play.

“Hopefully we feel at the end of the game that we are growing and we are continuing with this feeling.

“When you play against this side you have to do everything perfectly to try to beat a Champions League team like Liverpool.

“But, for us, I think we are in a good situation to try and play against them.”

Mauricio Pellegrino: Southampton fans should not boo Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

And Anfield counterpart Jurgen Klopp has admitted he will speak to the 26-year-old defender before the game at St Mary’s to make sure he is ok.

Van Dijk wanted to quit Saints in the summer but was forced to stay after the club refused to sell.

He sat out the start of the season, returned to the team below his best and finally arrived at Anfield five weeks ago in a £75m deal.

Pellegrino said: “I think we have to be grateful with him and now we have to think that Virgil is part of the past.

“He did well in our club and he left some profit to the club and we have to grateful.

“But Virgil is part of the past and we have to focus on our game and what we have to do.

Fleming previews latest league test

Show/hide article…

Saints are on a seven match unbeaten streak in the league, but will face a tough test today, with a host of injury concerns, as well as a number of youngsters - namely top scorer Michael Obafemi and Will Smallbone - making the deserved step up to the club’s Under-23s.

Despite being thin on the ground, Fleming has expressed his delight after seeing some of his regular young stars progress on to the next stage of their footballing journey, as well as allowing some first-year scholars a chance to show what they’re capable of.

“They’ve been really consistent right from the word go really,” Fleming asserted. "We had a couple of poor results at the start but since then we’ve performed excellently and had results to match.

"We’re short on numbers today, probably a flat 16 fit and available. We might have to rejig things to accommodate the players we have got fit.

"That’s the job, our objectives are to see the young boys make the step up, and earn contracts. We wish them well, of course. And the first years who we’ll have next year are gaining good exposure to this league.

"Some of the boys have been knocking on the door of the 23s for a while, and are finally getting their chance.

“We didn’t play well against Norwich last time; I played at the club for 11 years so I’m well aware that they will be organised and well drilled. Tough to play against always, but we’ll be looking for a much improved performance.”

Pellegrino finds the best ‘drug’ for Saints’ survival hopes

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino reckons the “best drug” for Saints in their relegation scrap in the Premier League battle is belief.

Saints are on a six-game unbeaten run in all competitions heading into tomorrow’s big match against Liverpool at St Mary’s, and Pellegrino can feel the team growing in confidence and belief.

He said: “I think so. The best drug in our dressing room when you are growing is the belief in ourselves, it is the belief that when everybody is committed on the pitch thinking about what they have got to do and helping each other.

“To be a team is completely different to being a group of players and this is the best drug for our dressing room.”

He added: “I think now we are much better than before. But, in every single day, the good results are not the consequence of the best performances.

“Sometimes you don’t win, but sometimes you play well because at the end this is the game. Obviously, we have to push our luck for our side.”

Pellegrino has no new injury problems ahead of tomorrow’s game, with only long-term absentee Charlie Austin on the treatment table.

The 46-year-old boss has been pleased in recent weeks to have been able to select a regular team.

He said: “Every single player needs games in a row because for me the game is the best training session possible. You will improve with the more games you play in a row. In our squad we are looking for this from every single player.

“Sometimes it depends on the opponent, sometimes it depends on your moment and sometimes it depends on your teammates because in some positions there is more competition than others.

“We are willing to try and keep the same base of the team most of the time.”
