United hospitality deadline approaches

Maya Yoshida named August Player of the Month

Yoshida helped Saints to register two clean sheets in the opening month of the campaign, as well playing an integral role in the 3-2 success against West Ham United.

But that has only left the Japan international hungry for more after admitting the start could have been a lot more productive.

Reflecting on the award, Yoshida said: “I’m really pleased. Thank you to the fans and my teammates. We only played three games so we have to move it on to get good results more.

“I expected more from the games we’ve played so far if I’m honest.

“I understand my situation and we have good competition between the squad so I have to keep working hard and be sharp, as well as showing my quality to the new manager and the fans as well.

“The manager has given me a lot of advice and not only me, but all the other defenders. You can see that we’re more aggressive in the game now and we need more points.

“August was a good month for me but hopefully we can make September even better.”

Hoedt eyes "Double Dutch’ Southampton centre-back duo as Van Dijk nears return

Southampton new boy Wesley Hoedt believes he could form a “very good” centre-back partnership with Virgil Van Dijk.

Van Dijk took his first step towards a first-team return, after failing to force through a summer move, when he played in Monday’s 4-0 defeat for Saints’ second string against Aston Villa counterparts.

It might still be a while before the Dutchman is considered ready to make his comeback though, having been out since suffering a season-ending ankle injury during a January win over Leicester.

And competitions for centre-back places will be a lot tougher when he eventually returns to the first-team fold.

Jack Stephens has emerged from the club’s academy to establish himself in the first team, while Jan Bednarek and Hoedt both arrived as summer signings.

Hoedt, a £15million capture from Italy’s Lazio and also a Netherlands international, would be Van Dijk’s most likely partner if new boss Mauricio Pellegrino persists with a back four.

The 23-year-old said about Van Dijk: “We’re both Dutch, so that’s an advantage. And we’re very similar. So we could have a very good partnership.

“Not only us, but we have three other central defenders who are really good, so that’s nice. It’s always good to have competition.”

The Reds were desperate to sign the Dutchman and pursued him throughout the transfer window.

But despite Van Dijk handing in a transfer request, the Saints refused to do business.

Le Tissier has hailed his former club for holding their nerve and says it was the right call.

“I thought they handled it excellently, I really do,” he said on Sky Sports.
