PHOTOS: Get a glimpse of Southampton’s ‘exciting’ new play park

Show/hide article…

A DATE has finally been set for the opening of a new £500,000 play park at Southampton Common.

The “exciting” multi-activity area is set to open on October 22, with the help of Saints legend Francis Benali.

The announcement comes after two months of delays for the still-to-be completed facility, which is being funded by Southampton City Council.

It was meant to open at the end of August, in time for the end of the school summer holidays.

But the project suffered long delays due to heavy rain, which caused groundwork issues for building contractors, Playforce.

Cabinet member for environment and transport, councillor Jacqui Rayment said: “Because of the poor weather over the summer, the site became water logged and we couldn’t lay the concrete down.

“There was even one week when we couldn’t do any work at all.

“We needed to make sure that the site was safe for staff and that they could work properly so the park was safe once it was finished.

“We did want it open in time for the end of August but there was nothing we could do.”

Work is now well underway on the new facility, which is being built on the site of the Common’s former paddling pool area.

Once completed, the park will include a number of water play features, a seven-and-a-half metre multi-use climbing area as well as slides and swings.

It will also have a kiosk, which will include toilets and a refreshments stand.

However, the main attraction will be the ‘tree nest’ play area.

The bespoke piece, designed like the rest of the park by award winning landscape architect Davies White, will include three connected nest areas.

Each area will be a different height, with the biggest reaching three metres and the smallest a metre high.

The piece will also contain animal sculptures, made by Southampton children during a special event at the Common last month.

Speaking about the facility, which cost around £500,000 to design and build, councillor Rayment said: “I’m really excited about it.

“To invest in our children’s parks knowing for generations that young people will be able to come and play here is a really positive thing for Southampton.”

Talking about the longevity of the park’s equipment, the majority of which is made largely out of New Forest wood and is designed to last for around 25 years, she added: “I just hope young people and their parents will respect it.

“I hope people will look after it and cherish it for the future.”

Around 360 tonnes of sand will be used at the play park, which will have a capacity of 700 children.

Fans banned after pitch invasions at Saints game

Show/hide article…

THREE football fans who burst onto the pitch during Southampton’s dramatic late win over West Ham have been banned and fined almost £1,500.

However the three pitch invaders, who appeared before Southampton Magistrates’ Court on Monday, all escaped football banning orders.

Facing District Judge Anthony Callaway, all three pleaded guilty to entering the St Mary’s pitch during Saints’ 3-2 home win over West Ham on August 19.

Oliver Barnard, of Mescott Meadows, Hedge End, was handed a fine of £450.

Asked if he had anything to say about his actions, the 22-year-old kitchen fitter said he was “guilty and that’s it”.

Daniel Hallett, of Glen House, Storey Street, London, offered an apology for his actions and to the steward who attempted to apprehended him.

The 31-year-old’s defence said he acknowledged it was a “silly thing to do”.

Jamie Davidson, 26, of Wraxall Close, Poole, also pleaded guilty and was fined £450.

All three were ordered to pay court costs of £85 each, and a victim surcharge of £45 each.

A spokesperson for Southampton FC confirmed that the trio have been banned from entering St Mary’s for the next three years.

They were reported to police after attempting to invade the St Mary’s pitch during Saints’ 3-2 win over West Ham in August.

The victory, Saints’ only Premier League win so far this season, came courtesy of a 93rd minute Charlie Austin penalty. He slotted past West Ham stopper Joe Hart from 12 yards, after Maya Yoshida was felled.

Saints are next in action on Saturday against Crystal Palace, who parted company with boss Frank de Boer after four games.

Hoedt talks about potential Van Dijk partnership

Show/hide article…

WESLEY Hoedt is sure that he and fellow Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk can forge a formidable centre-back partnership together at Saints.

The 23-year-old, who arrived from Lazio for £15m last month, made his debut in the 2-0 defeat to Watford on Saturday and is hopeful of playing next to compatriot Van Dijk.

But he’s also aware that Saints have top competition at centre-back, with Maya Yoshida, Jack Stephens and Jan Bednarek frontline options.

“We’re both Dutch so that’s an advantage and we’re very similar so we could have a very good partnership,” he said about Van Dijk.

“Not only us but we have three other central defenders who are really good so that’s nice. It’s always good to have competition.”

Wantaway Van Dijk has returned to the first team fold and played for the clubs under-23s on Monday, following his transfer saga in the summer months, which saw him banished to train alone after asking to leave.

The 26-year-old was told he was not for sale and was kept at the club despite his efforts to exit amid interest from Liverpool and Chelsea.

One of the reasons why Hoedt was tempted by a switch to St Mary’s was the club’s ambitions to keep this current Saints squad together on the south coast, rather than cash in - which has been the normal policy over the last few years.

“I think they’ve shown it [their ambition] by keeping the team together,” he said.

“That was their ambition and that’s something that I really liked and they wanted me really fast so that was really why I wanted to come here.”

While with Lazio, Hoedt had to manage the high expectations of the club’s passionate support.

“They’re really passionate there and they want the team to win every game,” he said.

“In Rome, if you ask around in Italy, they’re like ‘in Rome – especially with both clubs Lazio and Roma – the supporters very demanding’.

“That was really good for my career because you have to be on your toes every minute when you’re playing.”

The former AZ Alkmaar defender believes those experiences in the Italian capital will aid his progress at St Mary’s.

“For sure, I hope that I can adjust to the team. Even in training we have to do good,” he said.

“You have to win everything in every moment, every second you’re on the pitch you have to have the mentality to win.

“Then you will show it on the game day as well.”

This move to the Premier League was something Hoedt had been planning for some time.

“I planned it this way because two years ago I went away on a free transfer [to Lazio],” he said.

“I had a lot of clubs to choose from when I went away from Alkmaar, but I particularly chose Lazio and played almost 70 games in two seasons.

“In the beginning it was difficult but then I did really good and the next step for me was to play in the Premier League.

“That’s what I wanted to do and I think that Southampton is the best club to start at in the Premier League.”

Loan Watch: Midweek action for Gallagher and Seager

Show/hide article…

Saints loanees Sam Gallagher and Ryan Seager were unable to inspire their respective clubs to victories on Tuesday on a busy night of EFL action.

High-flying Leeds United had too much for Gallagher’s Birmingham City at Elland Road, goals from Samuel Saiz and Stuart Dallas meaning Blues suffered fourth consecutive league defeat.

Gallagher featured for 69 minutes for the visitors and was unfortunate not to open the scoring early on after seeing his low shot blocked from close range.

It was a similar story for fellow forward Seager whose MK Dons side were beaten 2-0 at Peterborough.

The 21-year-old, making his ninth appearance of the campaign, was replaced just before the hour by Osman Sow.

Elsewhere, Harrison Reed was an unused substitute in Norwich City’s goalless stalemate against Burton Albion at Carrow Road.
