Southampton’s lack of focus resulted in ‘awful day’, says Mauricio Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino says Southampton were masters of their own downfall in their 4-1 defeat to Leicester due to poor concentration.

After Riyad Mahrez’s 11th-minute opener in Wednesday night’s Premier League clash at St Mary’s, Saints were never in the game, much to Pellegrino’s frustration as his side capitulated to two Shinji Okazaki goals and an Andy King tap-in.

“It was a really bad game, from the beginning to the end,” said Pellegrino.

"We started the first 10 minutes well, but after the goal they were getting better and little by little, our confidence was down and we gave the ball away all the time.

“For me, it’s a little bit concentration, a little bit [not being] 100 per cent focused and at this level, you cannot be on the pitch giving this advantage… sometimes you get an awful day like today, and this is the reality.”

Southampton were three goals down at the break, which saw Pellegrino forced to bring on Manolo Gabbiadini to try and turn the tide.

Asked what he told his players at the break, Pellegrino said: “We need to react. We have to score one goal and at least be in the game. We scored one and we were really close to the second one.”

Saints pulled a goal back through Maya Yoshida just after the hour mark but King soon restored the visitors’ three-goal advantage.

Pellegrino says he is not fearful of a relegation battle, despite being just four points above the drop.

“In the Premier League, there are a group of teams that the difference between the bottom and the middle is three, four, five, six points,” he added. "Like at the end of last season, it’s more or less the same.

“It’s really tight. We need to fight for every point.”

Many Saints fans left the ground early having seen their team fail to impress, and several of those who stayed until the end booed the team off, something Pellegrino can sympathise with.

“Obviously we got the same feeling as the supporters, because when we play like this, we are a little bit surprised,” he said. “Three days before we played a really good game. But in football, in three days, everything changed.”

Claude Puel refuses to revel in Leicester rout at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel refused to rub salt into Southampton’s wounds after inspiring Leicester to a 4-1 rout over his former club at St Mary’s.

Frenchman Puel even effectively thanked Southampton for allowing him to improve as a manager, despite being sacked by the Saints’ hierarchy in the summer.

Shinji Okazaki’s brace and further goals from Riyad Mahrez and Andy King sealed Leicester’s fourth successive Premier League win, with Southampton only mustering Maya Yoshida’s bundled effort.

Puel guided Saints to an eighth-place Premier League finish and the League Cup final last term and still lost his job - but rejected the chance to labour his personal triumph on his return to face his old employers.

‘I said before the game, my feeling was always to keep chasing for positive results when I was at Southampton,’ said Puel.

'And I tried to give my best here, I think we had some fantastic games and results. We tried to develop a lot of players also.

'It was a great introduction to the Premier League and perhaps allowed me to become a better manager.

'Of course it was a strange feeling to come back here.

'It was nice to see familiar faces, we had kept a good understanding and good relationship with a lot of people, players and staff.

‘It was important to come back, and to try to keep the focus on the game for my players and my team. But of course it’s a pleasure to see all these people again.’

Pressed on whether he can derive pleasure from Leicester’s current form in a bid to disprove his former reputation for producing boring football, Puel again kept his counsel.

‘Again, this is a feeling for other people, I’m just giving my players an opportunity to play in a style against opponents with quality,’ said the Leicester manager.

'We try to play on the floor, but of course we can make more progress and we need to continue this work and just focus and concentrate on our own play.

'And hopefully we can continue with good results for the future.

'Of course, it’s a good thing, to win away and with quality in the game against a good team, and to start this game with fantastic intensity was good.

'The first half was fantastic, fantastic play and goals.

‘It was important in the second half to keep this level and to prevent them coming back into the game. Once they scored it was important for us to score a fourth.’

Mauricio Pellegrino apologised to Southampton’s supporters for his side’s performance, as the Saints made it just one win in eight games.

‘We showed a completely different face from Sunday,’ said Pellegrino, referring to the 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

Asked what went wrong, Pellegrino continued: ‘Everything. I’ll say sorry to the fans, because you can lose, but not in this way.’

Southampton 1-4 Leicester City: Puel exacts revenge on sorry Saints

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel exacted revenge on his first return to Saints as Leicester romped to a 4-1 Premier League win at St Mary’s.

Shinji Okazaki’s brace and further goals from Riyad Mahrez and Andy King eased Leicester past the struggling Saints, who could only muster a scrappy effort from Maya Yoshida.

Frenchman Puel was sacked in the summer despite last term leading Southampton to an eighth-place finish and the League Cup final.

The former Nice boss was out to disprove accusations he had favoured boring football in his Saints tenure, and revelled in his Leicester charges laying on plenty of entertainment.

The same shortcomings that littered Puel’s Saints tenure were on display for Mauricio Pellegrino’s men however, with the hosts finding no fluency in attack and defending pitifully.

New boss Pellegrino’s Southampton stint now appears under real strain: Saints boast just one win and six points in their last eight Premier League games.

After 17 games under Puel last term, Southampton had amassed 24 points - under Pellegrino at the same stage, they have just 18.

Leicester’s joyful travelling fans seized on the chance to mock their hosts, chirping up with “Aren’t you glad you sacked Puel?”.

Toothless in attack and disorganised at the back: Saints’ performance mirrored that of many under Puel last term.

Mahrez could hardly believe the time and space afforded to him by Southampton’s defence as he cantered through the middle and rifled Leicester’s facile opener.

Okazaki had one strike palmed away by Forster, then another cleared off the line by Mario Lemina.

Charlie Austin at least forced Kasper Schmeichel into a save but after an ineffective corner Saints were on the back foot in seconds.

Schmeichel’s fizzing ball sent Jamie Vardy through the middle and the England man found Mahrez down the left flank. Only Forster’s sharp save denied Vardy a fine goal after he redirected Mahrez’s low centre.

Leicester hardly had to work to double their lead, a deep corner catching Saints napping and Okazaki poking in at the second attempt.

And when the visitors swept home their third, the home faithful headed indoors in their droves some seven minutes from half-time, desperate for anything other than Saints’ miserable performance.

Harry Maguire’s expert chest-down and spin bamboozled Saints’ defence such that no one cleared his low cross - leaving the unmarked King with the tap-in honours at the far post.

Pellegrino sacrificed holding midfielder Oriol Romeu for striker Manolo Gabbiadini at the break but little changed before the hour.

Yoshida’s header found its way in to cut the deficit, but the unconvinced home fans could only chorus their amazement at having found the net.

Austin should have doubled the re-energised hosts’ tally when sliding onto the overlapping Ryan Bertrand’s low cross only to side-foot too close to Schmeichel.

Leicester quickly killed any delusions of a Saints recovery with another clinical strike. Mahrez pounced on a loose pass, feeding Vardy, whose low cross was easily swept home by Okazaki.

Southampton 1-4 Leicester: Pellegrino says ‘sorry’ to fans

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino apologised to Saints fans after his side were humbled 4-1 by former manager Claude Puel’s Leicester.

Puel’s first return to St Mary’s since his sacking at the end of last season could hardly have produced a worse night for Saints.

Pellegrino’s men were awful, and were deservedly well beaten by the Foxes.

The Saints manager pulled no punches and said sorry to the club’s supporters, who were booing their team during the first half.

He said: “My feeling is obviously that we are disappointed because we show completely different face from the other day.

“Obviously this performance surprised everybody because it is not about tactics or technical problems, we were really bad from the beginning until the end.

“When you have got those days the best thing is to try to go to the next page and prepare the game for Saturday and react to show another face and take responsibility.

“This is our job and I have to say sorry to our fans.

“You can lose games but not in this way.”

When asked what went wrong, Pellegrino replied: “Everything.”

Pellegrino made four changes for the game, but was adamant it was not his team selection that was to blame for the heavy loss.

“For me it is not a question of tactical or technical problems,” he insisted.

“We were far away from them, we leave space between midfielders and defenders.

“When you have got one night like this when everything is wrong don’t talk too much about football.”

Worrying for Pellegrino, if his theory is correct, is the attitude of his players.

The performance came seemingly out of nowhere, just a few days after Saints had put in a strong display in the 1-1 draw at home to Arsenal.

Equally as troubling is the position Saints now find themselves in in the Premier League table.

They now have just a four point cushion to the bottom three, but with away games at Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United as three of their next four matches.

Saints’ players will certainly need to react strongly.

“I think we couldn’t have an answer to play at this level and sometimes you have a bad moment a bad night like today,” reflected Pellegrino. “At this level the opponent kills you.”

Leicester City can still get better, says manager Claude Puel

Show/hide article…

Leicester City can still get better, says manager Claude Puel

Claude Puel says his Leicester City team still have to improve despite their comprehensive 4-1 win over his former club Southampton on Wednesday night.

Two Shinji Okazaki goals along with strikes from Riyad Mahrez and Andy King helped Leicester ease to the three points at St Mary’s, but Puel wants more from his side, who have now won four consecutive games.

“All is not perfect. We need to correct some things, we need to continue to improve and always progress,” Puel said.

It was the most impressive victory of Puel’s tenure, in both scoreline and performance, as Southampton could not deal with the Foxes on the break.

“My team is the most important thing. I approve of my players because we gave a fantastic game, a very good first half for example. It was important to maintain the result in the second half.”

Southampton came into the game off the back of a late draw with Arsenal and a last-minute loss to Manchester City in recent games, making their substandard efforts the more surprising to Puel.

“I think it’s a good team with very good players and they deserve all the results against City or against Arsenal and all our team were ready to play a strong game against this team. It’s a very good result for us.”

Man of the match Okazaki was brought into the starting line-up following his impressive display against Newcastle, as Puel decided to shuffle his pack as he tries to learn more about his team.

"It was important to give game time for players, like Shinji. I think it’s important to see all the possibility of the team and sometimes make some changes.

“If we have the ability to maintain the good results with some changes for every game, then it will be good for the future.”

Puel did not take any extra joy in beating the club who sacked him in the summer, instead seeing it as a good opportunity to see friends at St Mary’s.

“It was nice to see familiar faces when I came back here, I have a lot of friends. I appreciated all the players, all the staff and it was a good moment to see them. It’s one result and I am sure they will come back for the next games.”
