Puel expects Saints return to be “strange”

Show/hide article…

FORMER Saints boss Claude Puel admits it will be “strange” returning to St Mary’s with his new side Leicester City tonight – but hopes for a good reception.

The Frenchman, who was sacked after one season in charge at Saints in June, brings the in-form Foxes to the south coast and is looking forward to coming back to the club for the first time.

And he hopes the fans remember the “good times”.

“I think it will be a strange feeling of course,” he said of his return tonight.

“It will be strange going back to the St Mary’s Stadium but it will be nice to see some familiar faces of course. The most important thing is to keep a good focus about my team and players and try to make a strong game.

“I have kept in touch with former players and staff. I gave it my very best at Southampton.

“It was a good feeling all the season with the journey in the cup, but now I had no hesitation when Leicester gave me the opportunity and my focus now is on my team and with my club, Leicester.”

Puel led Saints to an 8th place finish in the Premier League and the League Cup final in his only campaign in charge.

But reservations over his management and style of play meant Saints axed him one year into a three-year contract.

The 56-year-old replaced Craig Shakespeare as Leicester boss in October and he’s since led the Foxes to four wins, two draws and one defeat in his seven matches at the helm.

Puel is hoping, despite the disappointing way his tenure ended at St Mary’s, that he gets a good reception from the Saints faithful.

“I hope the fans remember our good times, like the journey in the cup and the final,” he said. “It was great at Wembley. They are good memories. It was their first final since 2003, I think.

“It was a great moment. Also, with games against Inter Milan home and away, we took 8,000 fans for the journey. It is fantastic. They remember the good times we shared.”

The former Nice boss has got Leicester in top form, but he is wary of Saints’ recent performances.

“Yes, we are in form but it is the same for Southampton,” he said.

“Their performances are very interesting. There was a high level of performance on the pitch, against Manchester City, a great team, and Arsenal.

“It will be a good balance between the two teams and I hope we see a good game with quality on the pitch. I am sure of this.”

The Foxes form has been excellent, but Puel doesn’t want to talk about reaching European competition just yet, having only been in the job for just under two months.

“Oh no, we can’t talk about this (Europe) at the moment. We just try to keep a good performance, to work hard on the pitch, work hard and be consistent every game,” he said.

“We are playing now every two or three days and it is very hard. This period gives us a challenge and we will see if we can continue this work and maintain this level.”

Southampton 1-4 Leicester: Shinji Okazaki double helps Foxes to fourth straight win

Show/hide article…

Two Shinji Okazaki goals helped Leicester City ease to a 4-1 victory over a hapless Southampton at St Mary’s.

Leicester took time to grow into the game but they were unstoppable once they got going as Riyad Mahrez scored a great individual opener after 11 minutes.

Southampton could not cope with their opponents and allowed Okazaki and Andy King to score from close range to make it 3-0 before the break.

Saints pulled a goal back through Maya Yoshida but the game was all over when Okazaki turned in his second on 69 minutes to complete the scoring and secure Leicester’s fourth straight league win.

Algerian Mahrez picked up the ball 40 yards from goal in the 11th minute and was allowed to run at the Saints defence until he got 20 yards from goal, where he fired a shot across Fraser Forster into the bottom corner.

It was all Leicester from that moment onwards and the lead was doubled in the 32nd minute when a corner was volleyed at goal by Christian Fuchs but it was blocked on the line, only to fall to Okazaki who poked home from close range.

Saints looked incapable of defending and it was soon 3-0 as Harry Maguire was allowed to chest down a free-kick, turn and get to the byline from where he sent the ball across the goalmouth to the back post for King to tap in the third.

Southampton were better after the break and pulled one back when Yoshida headed a corner across the box, through a number of bodies and into the net beyond Kasper Schmeichel.

Charlie Austin should have made it 3-2 when Ryan Bertrand sent in a perfect cross for the striker to tap in from six yards but Schmeichel spread himself and stopped the shot superbly.

Leicester finished the scoring when Cedric Soares misplaced a pass, allowing Jamie Vardy to break down the right and cross into the box for Okazaki to steer into the net.

Mauricio Pellegrino: "It was a really bad game from the beginning to the end. After we conceded the first goal, as we started the first 10 minutes well, but after this goal they were getting better and little by little our confidence was down and we gave the ball away all the time.

"For me it’s a little bit concentration, don’t be 100 per cent focused and at this level, you cannot be on the pitch, giving this advantage and sometimes you get an awful day like today and this is the reality.

"In the Premier League there are a group of teams that the difference between the bottom and the middle is three, four, five six points like at the end of last season, it’s more or less the same. It’s really tight, we need to fight for every point.

“Obviously we got the same feeling as the supporters because when we play like this we are a little bit surprised as three days before we played a really good game. But in football, in three days, everything changed.”

Claude Puel: "My team is the most important thing. I approve of my players because we gave a fantastic game, very good first half for example. It was important to maintain the result in the second half.

"I think it’s a good team with very good players and they deserve all the results against City or against Arsenal and just all the team ready to play a strong game against this team. It’s a very good result for us.

"All is not perfect. We need to correct some things, we need to continue to improve and always progress.

“It was nice to see familiar faces when I came back here, I have a lot of friends. I appreciated all the players, all the staff and it was a good moment to see them. It’s one result and I am sure they will come back for the next games.”

The striker was a constant threat to Southampton as he chased endlessly and got himself into great positions to score. The only dampener for him was he was unable to complete his hat-trick as he completed a rare 90 minutes.

Southampton travel to Stamford Bridge to play Premier League champions Chelsea on Saturday at 3pm.

Leicester will host Crystal Palace at the same time at the weekend.

Southampton 1-4 Leicester: Riyad Mahrez sparks goal rush

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel’s Leicester produced the perfect display on the manager’s first return to his former club.

The Frenchman was sacked by Southampton in June following a supporter backlash at his dull brand of football.

On Wednesday night his Leicester side played probably the best football Saints fans had ever seen the Frenchman put on at St Mary’s.

Puel’s Southampton never scored four here and Leicester amassed as many in one night as Saints had in his last eight home games in charge.

‘I leave this feeling for other people,’ Puel said of his critics. ‘I tried to give them my best here and I think we had some fantastic games and fantastic journeys. It was a great introduction in the Premier League for me and perhaps allowed me to become a better manager.’

Yet this was not a one-off to settle an old score. Leicester have been like this since he took over in October as the new manager has shaken off the stain of pessimism game-by-game, propelling them towards the European places that Southampton originally appointed him to reach.

Heavy rainfall left a slippery pitch at kick-off and two tumbles played a significant part in Leicester’s 11th-minute opening goal.

Riyad Mahrez was 40 yards from goal when he checked back and fell, unintentionally disarming Southampton’s nearby players. And so he dribbled at goal and when the nearest opponent Mario Lemina slipped, space opened up for Mahrez to run into before firing across goal and into the bottom right corner.

If Puel is trying to make a point at Leicester about his perceived dull style it is coming across clearly at his new club, this securing their fourth straight Premier League win.

It was all Leicester and all the exciting football largely devoid from Puel in his spell here and they were two ahead by the 32nd minute from an audacious move. Mahrez’s corner was met by Christian Fuchs on the volley, it bounced between Steven Davis and Fraser Forster before Shinji Okazaki prodded in.

Leicester had three by half-time and even that was generous on the hosts. Centre-back Harry Maguire was able to chest down Mahrez’s long free kick inside Southampton’s penalty area — mismatched with the slighter Nathan Redmond marking the big defender — and when he sent the ball hard across the six-yard box Andy King was free at the back post to convert.

Puel celebrated the third like he celebrated Southampton’s goals in the cup final. This obviously meant more than a standard away league win.

The moves and chances kept coming. Lemina desperately slid back to clear Okazaki’s shot from the goal line, after it had beaten Forster’s dive and was heading into the bottom right of goal. Forster spread himself to deny Jamie Vardy following a rapid Leicester break and Southampton’s goalkeeper pawed Okazaki’s 20-yard shot that arced cutely off Virgil Van Dijk wide.

‘Are you glad you sacked Puel?’ came from the travelling supporters. There was no response.

Maya Yoshida pulled one back, however, with a 61st-minute goal. The defender headed a corner into the six-yard melee and all the way in, even if Dusan Tadic tried to claim he got a touch, meaning Japanese players scored for either side in a Premier League match for the first time.

Soon after, though, Leicester had the fourth with another sharp move. Cedric Soares played a terrible cross-field ball straight to Mahrez, who slipped Vardy down the right channel and his cross was met first-time by Okazaki.

The supporters who booed Puel during his lap of appreciation on the final day of last season are likely the same ones who left with 20 minutes remaining. Are they glad they sacked him?

Saints suffer Leicester defeat

Show/hide article…

Saints found themselves 3-0 down at the interval with a mountain to climb, as goals from Riyad Mahrez, Shinji Okazaki and Andy King put the visitors in control.

Maya Yoshida pulled one back before Kasper Schmeichel pulled off a miraculous save from Charlie Austin to prevent Saints reducing the arrears to 3-2.

With the hosts pushing for an equaliser, they were exposed on the counter-attack as Okazaki scored his second from an incisive breakaway.

Mauricio Pellegrino made four changes to his side, who were in Premier League action for the second time in four days at St Mary’s following the 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

Cédric returned from injury to take his place in the back four, while Mario Lemina, Steven Davis and Sofiane Boufal earned recalls to the starting XI.

Jack Stephens, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond all dropped to the bench after starting against the Gunners.

With Austin’s third-minute opener still fresh in the memory, Saints again started quickly, forcing two corners in the first 90 seconds.

Leicester soon threatened to catch Pellegrino’s men on the counter-attack, only for Jamie Vardy’s low cross to skid beyond the advancing Okazaki as the rain pelted down.

It was a first glimpse of the threat posed by Claude Puel’s side, who edged in front in the 11th minute, as Mahrez, starting on the right flank, was afforded too much space.

Drifting infield, the Algerian ran at the Saints defence until he was in shooting territory, and duly unleashed a low left-footed drive across Fraser Forster that nestled just inside the far post.

Mahrez was at it again when he played a one-two and surged into the box to test out the returning Cédric, who proved up to the task with a last-ditch tackle, before Forster made a diving save to keep out Okazaki.

A positive Saints start had given way to a period of Leicester pressure, which continued as Okazaki seized on a loose ball in the box and beat Forster with a low toe-poke that needed the presence of Lemina on the line to clear and deny the visitors a second.

Saints did spring into life on the half-hour when Davis and Boufal combined to find Austin, who stung the slippery palms of Schmeichel with an explosive shot from 20 yards.

But when Schmeichel claimed the resulting corner, the keeper drilled a brilliant low clearance into the path of Vardy, who found Mahrez on the left.

When the goalscorer instantly returned the favour with a low cross to the near post, it would take a reflex save from Forster to deny his England colleague.

It would prove only a brief reprieve, as Mahrez’s corner was met on the volley by Christian Fuchs, sparking pinball in the Saints box from which Okazaki reacted quickest to poke home Leicester’s second.

Two became three just six minutes later, as the first half turned into a nightmare for the hosts.

Another Mahrez set-piece set the wheels in motion, this time finding Harry Maguire, who kept the ball alive and fizzed in a low cross from the byeline touched in by King at the far post.

Pellegrino’s response at the interval was to throw on another striker in Manolo Gabbiadini, sacrificing Oriol Romeu in a bid to stage a dramatic comeback.

But it was Leicester who resumed on the front foot, as Mahrez forced Forster to parry a 25-yard free kick, before the goalkeeper made an unorthodox save by kicking away Maguire’s low shot from a standing position.

Saints did keep Schmeichel on his toes with a Ryan Bertrand free kick that was tipped over, leading to a Bertrand corner met by Yoshida, who headed the ball back where it came from to find the bottom corner as Dušan Tadić tried to claim the final touch.

Enter Redmond for Boufal, who was instantly involved with a pass down the line for the marauding Bertrand, whose cross looked certain to be finished by the sliding Austin, only for Schmeichel to pull off a miraculous save.

It would prove a big moment. Instead of reducing the deficit to a single goal with a quarter of the game to go, Saints soon found themselves 4-1 down.

The Foxes were sharp on the break all night, and used their pace to destructive effect again when Mahrez fed Vardy, whose low cross was dispatched by Okazaki for his second of the night.

It was a goal that knocked the stuffing out of Southampton, who kept plugging away but knew the game was up.

Southampton 1 Leicester 4: Saints’ shambolic first half ensures a happy St Mary’s return for Claude Puel

Show/hide article…

It fell to the travelling Leicester City fans to ask the burning question on a night of white-hot shame for Southampton. “Are you glad,” they sung. “Are you glad you sacked Puel?”

As reunions go, this was an evening of particular awkwardness for Southampton’s board. Claude Puel strolled back into St Mary’s, just six months after he was dismissed for guiding the club to a League Cup final and an eighth-placed finish, and promptly laid waste to his former home.

Here was concrete evidence of how far Southampton have regressed since his departure. Mauricio Pellegrino’s side still have difficulty scoring goals, as they did under Puel, but now, it seems, they also struggle to keep them out.

Regular viewers of the Premier League will be stretched to find a first-half showing more shambolic than these opening 45 minutes, which ended with the home fans thankful that Southampton were only trailing by three goals, rather than five or six.

“We were really bad from the beginning until the end,” said Pellegrino. “I have to say sorry to our fans. You can lose games, but not in this way.”

Southampton vs. Leicester City - Football Match Report - December 13, 2017 - ESPN

Claude Puel praises Leicester’s first half after they got off to a three-goal lead against his former Southampton side. (1:26)

Claude Puel exacted revenge on his first return to Southampton as Leicester romped to a 4-1 Premier League win at St Mary’s.

Shinji Okazaki’s brace and further goals from Riyad Mahrez and Andy King eased Leicester past the struggling Saints, who could only muster a scrappy effort from Maya Yoshida.

Puel was sacked in the summer despite last term leading Southampton to an eighth-place finish and the League Cup final.

The former Nice boss was out to disprove accusations he had favoured boring football in his Saints tenure, and revelled in his Leicester charges laying on plenty of entertainment.

The same shortcomings that littered Puel’s Saints tenure were on display for Mauricio Pellegrino’s men however, with the hosts finding no fluency in attack and defending pitifully.

New boss Pellegrino’s Southampton stint now appears under real strain: Saints boast just one win and six points in their last eight Premier League games.

After 17 games under Puel last term, Southampton had amassed 24 points – under Pellegrino at the same stage, they have just 18.

Leicester’s joyful travelling fans seized on the chance to mock their hosts, chirping up with “Aren’t you glad you sacked Puel?”

Toothless in attack and disorganised at the back: Saints’ performance mirrored that of many under Puel last term.

Mahrez could hardly believe the time and space afforded to him by Southampton’s defence as he cantered through the middle and rifled Leicester’s facile opener.

Okazaki had one strike palmed away by Forster, then another cleared off the line by Mario Lemina.

Charlie Austin at least forced Kasper Schmeichel into a save but after an ineffective corner Saints were on the back foot in seconds.

Schmeichel’s fizzing ball sent Jamie Vardy through the middle and the England man found Mahrez down the left flank. Only Forster’s sharp save denied Vardy a fine goal after he redirected Mahrez’s low centre.

Leicester hardly had to work to double their lead, a deep corner catching Saints napping and Okazaki poking in at the second attempt.

And when the visitors swept home their third, the home faithful headed indoors in their droves some seven minutes from half-time, desperate for anything other than Saints’ miserable performance.

Harry Maguire’s expert chest-down and spin bamboozled Saints’ defence such that no one cleared his low cross - leaving the unmarked King with the tap-in honours at the far post.

Pellegrino sacrificed holding midfielder Oriol Romeu for striker Manolo Gabbiadini at the break but little changed before the hour.

Yoshida’s header found its way in to cut the deficit, but the unconvinced home fans could only chorus their amazement at having found the net.

Austin should have doubled the re-energised hosts’ tally when sliding onto the overlapping Ryan Bertrand’s low cross only to side-foot too close to Schmeichel.

Leicester quickly killed any delusions of a Saints recovery with another clinical strike. Mahrez pounced on a loose pass, feeding Vardy, whose low cross was easily swept home by Okazaki.

Yoshida: We have to move on

Saints found themselves 3-0 down at half-time, but pulled a goal back through Yoshida before Charlie Austin came agonisingly close to making it 3-2.

Instead Leicester scored again, prompting the defender to apologise to the home supporters and call on the club to show its fighting spirit over the busy festive period.

“We conceded three sloppy goals in the first half,” Yoshida said.

“We tried to come back in the second half, but it wasn’t enough. It’s a huge defeat against a team just above us.

“We still have many games in December, and the next game against Chelsea is a massive game. It will be difficult, but we have to show our spirit.

“We have to move on – that means not only the players, but the staff, the fans, everyone.

“We put in a good performance against Arsenal and I think the fans were expecting more from us, so it’s a real shame.

Pellegrino reflects on Leicester defeat

Show/hide article…

The visitor’s commanding first half showing saw them emerge with a three goal advantage at the break, before Shinji Okazaki abruptly halted any hopes of a Saints revival after Maya Yoshida had momentarily reduced arrears.

The manager was quick to highlight that tonight’s performance was way off the standard produced against Arsenal, and Saints will need to return fighting when they travel to Stamford Bridge this coming weekend.

“It was a really bad game from the beginning until the end,” the manager conceded. "When you have a game like this, you can’t talk too much about the tactical, we were wrong in a lot of different aspects.

"Obviously, we played well the other day [against Arsenal] and the team has been improving, but tonight is really disappointing. Tomorrow we have to wake up and react, in preparation for the weekend.

"We have to try and show our character, which will be difficult against Chelsea. For all of us, we’ve got the same feelings of frustration as the supporters.

"We prepared the game to try to be proud for ourselves, but also to try and show our fans that we want to do the right things.

“We want to play good football and to win games, we were close against Arsenal, but today we were really bad from beginning to end.”

Southampton 1-4 Leicester: Former Saints boss Claude Puel insists there is no bad blood after summer sacking

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel refused to rub salt into Southampton’s wounds after inspiring Leicester to a 4-1 rout over his former club at St Mary’s.

Frenchman Puel even effectively thanked Southampton for allowing him to improve as a manager, despite being sacked by the Saints’ hierarchy in the summer.

Shinji Okazaki’s brace and further goals from Riyad Mahrez and Andy King sealed Leicester’s fourth successive Premier League win, with Southampton only mustering Maya Yoshida’s bundled effort.

Puel guided Saints to an eighth-place Premier League finish and the League Cup final last term and still lost his job - but rejected the chance to labour his personal triumph on his return to face his old employers.

“I said before the game, my feeling was always to keep chasing for positive results when I was at Southampton,” said Puel.

"And I tried to give my best here, I think we had some fantastic games and results. We tried to develop a lot of players also.

"It was a great introduction to the Premier League and perhaps allowed me to become a better manager.

"Of course it was a strange feeling to come back here.

"It was nice to see familiar faces, we had kept a good understanding and good relationship with a lot of people, players and staff.

“It was important to come back, and to try to keep the focus on the game for my players and my team. But of course it’s a pleasure to see all these people again.”

Pressed on whether he can derive pleasure from Leicester’s current form in a bid to disprove his former reputation for producing boring football, Puel again kept his counsel.

“Again, this is a feeling for other people, I’m just giving my players an opportunity to play in a style against opponents with quality,” said the Leicester manager.

"We try to play on the floor, but of course we can make more progress and we need to continue this work and just focus and concentrate on our own play.

"And hopefully we can continue with good results for the future.

"Of course, it’s a good thing, to win away and with quality in the game against a good team, and to start this game with fantastic intensity was good.

"The first half was fantastic, fantastic play and goals.

“It was important in the second half to keep this level and to prevent them coming back into the game. Once they scored it was important for us to score a fourth.”

Mauricio Pellegrino apologised to Southampton’s supporters for his side’s performance, as the Saints made it just one win in eight games.

“We showed a completely different face from Sunday,” said Pellegrino, referring to the 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

Asked what went wrong, Pellegrino continued: “Everything. I’ll say sorry to the fans, because you can lose, but not in this way.”
