Puel: Southampton return will be strange

Show/hide article…

Leicester City manager Claude Puel has admitted his return to Southampton will feel strange for him but is focused on getting a fourth win in a row for his new club.

Puel was in charge at Southampton last season but parted ways with the club in the summer, before taking over at King Power Stadium in October, where he has made a flying start.

“It will be a strange feeling, of course, to go back to St Mary’s Stadium,” Puel told Leicester’s official website.

"It will be nice to see some familiar faces, but the most important thing, like it is for the players, is to keep a good focus.

“We want to try and make a strong game against this team.”

Pellegrino unable to predict Puel reception

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino reflected on the tough job Premier League managers face as his predecessor Claude Puel tonight returns to St Mary’s for the first time since his sacking.

Puel was dismissed at the end of last season despite leading Saints to an eighth placed finish and the EFL Cup final.

Pellegrino was the ultimate beneficiary as he came in as a replacement, while Puel wasn’t long without a job with Leicester making a surprise appointment after axing Craig Shakespeare.

The Frenchman brings the Foxes to St Mary’s tonight with Pellegrino unwilling to predict the reaction of an entire stadium to their former boss, but admitting life as a manager can be hard.

He said: “In football everybody has got different opinions.

“Some people are more happy with some people, some players, some managers.

“Some people like a different style of football.

“Today in football when you don’t win it’s an emotional game. You in trouble. When you lose the people don’t want to hear an excuse. We need a result.

“When you don’t win you have to try and win again because you need to.

“Let me know which manager is admired by their fans when you lose and when you are in trouble? Nobody. Even the most important managers in the world.

“It is part of our life. It is part of our job. Everybody in this world knows what happens and we have to be really professional because the Premier League is really tough and equalised, and tough between a lot of teams.

“We have to be careful to talk about the fans. How many? 30,000, 40, ten, one? I don’t know. “It’s difficult to talk about that.”

He added: “How can I guess the reaction of 30,000 people? It’s impossible to know.

“When we talk about people we have to be careful because who are people? Ten, 20, 100, one, 30,000. Anybody know how 30,000 think?

“It’s impossible to put into all of them the same views.

“Around this table everybody has different opinions and we are five or six. Imagine 30,000. It’s impossible to know about that.”

It could also be a tricky evening for the Saints players, most of whom played under Puel.

“For me in this moment the life for our football players is not too easy,” insisted Pellegrino.

“The people outside think the life is really easy for them.

“Everybody thinks about success, about money, about they are the best in their families, in his context, but nobody knows what happens behind him and what they are doing in the past to be in this position, how they have been working, suffering, leaving things outside to be a top player.

“To be a top player today they have a lot of pressure. They have huge interests around them and it is not easy to manage.

“I would like to be close to them to try to realise at least to be more open minded in our life.”

Leicester boss Claude Puel defends his record at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Leicester manager Claude Puel believes he does not deserve criticism for his style of play at former club Southampton.

The Frenchman defended himself ahead of his first Premier League visit to St Mary’s since being sacked in June.

Puel’s lone season at Southampton saw the club finish eighth in the league and reach the League Cup final.

But Puel came under fire for a defensive approach with the club scoring just 41 goals, the lowest among teams in the top half of the table.

The club had one win in their final eight league matches and did not score in their last five home games before he was sacked.

Ahead of Wednesday’s clash, Puel said: 'Other people decided to make comments about our play, about results or other things.

‘It is a mistake because if you saw games at Southampton we played good football and created chances.’

Adding: ‘For me it’s always the same, to try and score more goals, to play football, to attack together and to always have good chances to score.’

The 56-year-old pointed towards the success he had on the south-coast.

Despite being beaten 3-2 by Manchester United, the Saints reached their first major cup final in 14 years.

Puel continued: ‘I hope the fans remember our good times, like the journey in the cup and the final. It was great at Wembley, they are good memories.’

Leicester are currently eighth in the table with 23 points after six wins, five draws and five defeats and are looking for their fourth straight victory.

The club have improved under Puel, who replaced Craig Shakespeare in October with the Foxes third from bottom.

He added: 'It’s important to keep the way and just to continue this work after that, it’s for other people to criticise or be positive or negative.

‘It’s important for me to always give my best for the club and I gave my best for Southampton. But it’s in the past now, it’s finished.’

Southampton are 11th with 18 points and were unlucky to draw 1-1 with Arsenal in their last game.
