Southampton vs Leicester: Team news, kick-off time, odds

Show/hide article…

Ahead of the midweek Premier League action, Sportsmail will be providing you with all you need to know about every fixture, with team news, provisional squads, betting odds and Opta stats. Here is all the information you need for Southampton’s home clash with Leicester.

Cedric Soares could return from hamstring trouble for Southampton’s Premier League clash with Leicester City on Wednesday.

The Portugal full-back returned to full training on Monday, but will still be assessed further ahead of the St Mary’s encounter.

Boss Mauricio Pellegrino could mix up his selection following Sunday’s 1-1 home draw with Arsenal to combat the festive fixture glut.

Leicester boss Claude Puel will have Shinji Okazaki available as the Foxes go in search of their fourth straight Premier League win at Southampton on Wednesday.

Okazaki came off the bench and shrugged off a head injury to inspire the weekend win at Newcastle and could feature from the start as Puel returns to St Mary’s for the first time since he was dismissed by Saints in the summer.

Robert Huth (ankle) and Matty James (Achilles) remain out but Puel is hopeful the pair will soon be available as they step up their respective recoveries.

Southampton have lost just one of their 11 Premier League home games against Leicester (W5 D5), with that loss coming at the Dell in April 2000 (1-2).

Leicester City’s only win at St Mary’s in any competition was in a Championship game in January 2012 (2-0).

Southampton’s 17-point tally after 16 games is their lowest at this stage of a season in five years and four points less than Claude Puel led them to after 16 games last season (21) – they last won fewer at this stage in 2012-13 (15 points).

Mauricio Pellegrino has a lower points per game (1.12) and win ratio (25%) in the Premier League as Southampton manager than Claude Puel managed last season at the club (1.21 points per game and 31.6% win ratio).

Claude Puel is looking to win four successive league games as a manager for the first time since October 2015 while in charge of Nice in the French Ligue 1.

Charlie Austin has scored eight goals in his last 11 Premier League starts for Southampton, including four in his last three games.

Since the start of 2014-15, only five English players have scored more Premier League goals than Charlie Austin (30).

Dusan Tadic provided his 26th Premier League assist for Southampton in their 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday – only Matt Le Tissier (64) has more for the club in the competition.

Riyad Mahrez has been directly involved in eight goals in 16 appearances in the Premier League this season (four goals and four assists); just one one fewer than in 36 games last season (six goals and three assists).

Demarai Gray has netted three goals in seven Premier League appearances since Claude Puel took charge, after scoring just once in his first 50 games in the competition.

“Demanding” Pellegrino wants more

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino says he will remain “demanding” of his players and believes they are capable of much more, despite improved recent performances.

Saints played superbly as they drew 1-1 with Arsenal last time out, having also starred at Manchester City as well as hammering Everton and fighting out a competitive match with Bournemouth in recent weeks.

The upturn in both displays and results have been a welcome tonic for Pellegrino and his team, but the manager feels the squad is still some way from hitting what he believes to be their full potential.

He said: “I don’t have an ideal because my idea is to play in one way that I would like to sustain the attack but I think we have the quality of player to try to play in the opponent’s half and try to be competitive against the strongest sides in the Premier League.

“We can be more competitive little by little and feel this experience.

“I think that I don’t want to put any limit because as a group of people we are working together and our gap to improve is huge.

“I don’t want to be happy with this. I think we can do, we should do, something more.

“I expect something more from them and I will be demanding with them because I want to achieve more, I want to win more games and I think we are really close to do this step.”

Next up for Saints is the visit of Leicester to St Mary’s tomorrow, and the return of former manager Claude Puel.

In terms of how he goes about trying to continually improve his players, Pellegrino likens their journey to a student studying at university.

“The main things is the way you come every day to the training ground and the mentality for training. This is the most important thing,” he reflected.

“When you go to university you have got a sense why you are studying and this is more or less the same.

“You come here with the real goal, the real strive, to be a better player every single day.

“This synergy at the end is better for the team.”

Pellegrino insisted that he hasn’t found a particular problem with Saints, and instead thinks it is something that all footballers should do.

“I think everybody can improve his mentality,” said Pellegrino.

“Everybody can improve and can learn in the way that you have to train, the way you can be better on and off the pitch, how you can approach the difficult moment, how you can be persistent when you are outside and living this situation.

“Sometimes obviously my goal as a manager is to try to improve them and teach them in how they have to train because sometimes we are trainers, but another thing is to teach them.

“I would like to be in the middle with balance. If you don’t have the right mentality it will be really difficult to move forward.”

Pellegrino: We’re confident in this moment

Show/hide article…

Approaching a busy festive period, Pellegrino has made changes to his team and he has been particularly pleased with how they have performed when called upon.

“I will try to change some players because we knew that before the opponent will have one day extra and we have another game on Saturday,” Pellegrino said.

“I have told my squad that the good news is I feel that most of them are ready to play. Sometimes it depends on the qualities we need in the game, while always keeping the same model and style.

“Some of them have to wait for their opportunities but the most important thing is the mentality to be really well prepared to help the team.”

Saints meet a Leicester City side who have now won three games in a row under the stewardship of Claude Puel, following their 3-2 success at Newcastle.

Pellegrino added: “I think they are getting better because they have won a lot of games in a row since Claude has been in charge.

“They won the league not many years ago and most of them are the same players. It’s a difficult side because they have pace and quality between the lines.

“They are also defending really well, really compact but we’re confident in this moment, we want to continue in this way and it’s an important game for us.”

Arsene Wenger must sort Arsenal travel sickness to kickstart campaign

Show/hide article…

Arsenal have problems on the road in the Premier League, so after dropping two points to Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday, Arsene Wenger will be keen for his team to make up for that when they face West Ham away on Wednesday night.

This season the Gunners have won just twice on their travels, drawn a couple, and lost four times with a goal difference of minus four. It’s a problem that doesn’t just apply to this campaign. In the calendar year of 2017 they’ve lost half of their games away from the Emirates, and only three teams – West Ham, Stoke and Watford – have conceded more goals.

It’s an issue that must be troubling the Arsenal manager, and after the performance at Southampton – when they again conceded an early goal – he has a couple of key questions to answer.

In the absence of Shkodran Mustafi – who will also miss the trip to West Ham – Wenger erred on the side of caution, choosing the experience of club captain Per Mertesacker. The 33-year-old was found wanting for the Southampton goal, however, and when Arsenal need to change things in the second half, he was replaced by Danny Welbeck as they shifted to a back four.

On Wednesday night the Frenchman has to decide whether he sticks with the back three, with Mertesacker, Rob Holding and Calum Chambers all candidates to start, or revert a system he admitted last week he prefers.

“It’s my preferred system, four at the back. But I adjust always to what suits the players best, the quality of the players, the balance of the team,” he said.

It’s an issue that has been complicated by the absence of Aaron Ramsey, one of the team’s best performers in an inconsistent season. He divides opinion, but he has made more assists than any other Arsenal player, and has been the driving force – along with Mesut Ozil – in the team’s best performances in recent weeks.

Wenger’s defensive selection may also be influenced by the need to offer some protection to Laurent Koscielny, a player who requires ongoing treatment for an Achilles’ problem, and who has looked like a man who is feeling the effects of that. The French international was uncharacteristically error-prone in the games against United and Southampton, and having to deal with physical issues may be having an effect on concentration levels.

Arsenal play three times in a week, and asking the 32-year-old to do 90 minutes in each game seems a risky strategy. Whether it’s at the London Stadium or at the Emirates on Saturday, Wenger may have to show some faith in young defenders who have the potential to be part of the future.

Chambers was handed a new deal last month, a show of faith in him, while Holding – despite a few mistakes here and there – has performed well since his arrival from Bolton last season. If they’re to establish themselves properly, they need the manager to trust them and play them, particularly when circumstances dictate.

What he does in midfield is bigger question. There have been calls for Jack Wilshere to see more Premier League playing time, and Ramsey’s injury could provide an opportunity for him. That said, it’s where exactly he fits that remains open to question.

The Welsh international is a relentless runner, an athlete with a non-stop engine, and that’s not really Wilshere’s strength, so it’s unlikely he’ll be asked to fill in on a like-for-like basis. He could come in for Granit Xhaka, who has been struggling for form, but he lacks some of the physicality required for that deeper-lying role – especially when that player is left so isolated in the Arsenal set-up.

He’s best playing a bit further forward, trying to break the lines with a burst of pace or a moment of skill, but that requires cover further behind him. That’s doable with a change of system, and it remains to be seen if Wenger is willing to do that.

Last season he moved to a back four to shake his side from a slump, and to some extent it worked even if it hasn’t made them much more defensively stable. He needs to do something to address their poor record away from home, so perhaps reverting to type and focusing on the team’s attacking strength is the way to do it.

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino unsure of Claude Puel’s reception

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has insisted Southampton will remain ‘professional’ on welcoming former boss Claude Puel back to St Mary’s with Leicester.

New Saints manager Pellegrino admitted he is unsure how the home fans will respond to Frenchman Puel’s return when he pitches up with the Foxes for Wednesday’s Premier League clash.

But Pellegrino has claimed Southampton will maintain a businesslike approach with the ex-Saints manager, who guided the south coast club to an eighth-place finish in the Premier League and the league cup final last term.

‘In football, everybody has different opinions,’ said Pellegrino, when asked if he hoped Puel would receive a warm reception from Southampton’s fans.

'Some people can be more happy with some managers, some players; people like different styles of football.

'When you don’t win, you’re in trouble. And when you lose, people don’t want to hear excuses.

'When you win, you’ve got to go and win again. Let me know which manager is admired by the fans when you lose. Not even the most important manager in the world.

‘This is part of life, our job. Everyone knows this. And we have to be really professional.’

Olivier Giroud’s late goal denied Saints a win against Arsenal on Sunday, with Pellegrino’s side forced to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Now the former Liverpool coach has called on his side to beware Leicester’s counter-attacking ability in order to get back to winning ways in the league.

‘It will be crucial to try to keep the ball, as much as possible, and to try to be really balanced when we’re close to them with the ball,’ said Pellegrino.

'They’ve got some habits, some before, because they have the quality to attack as quick as possible.

‘But they have pace, quality between the lines, they defend well as a block. It will be difficult, a tough game.’

10 things to look out for in the midweek Premier League games

Show/hide article…

With the Premier League entering silly season, a hectic midweek schedule is sure to throw up plenty more entertainment.

Pep Guardiola stands on the brink of breaking a 15-year-old league record, while Jose Mourinho may have a selection headache on his hands.

Here Sportsmail take a look at some of the potential talking points ahead of this week’s round of fixtures…

Should Gareth Southgate choose to pay a visit to Turf Moor on Tuesday night, he may find himself drawn to both goalmouths more than usual.

There were fears for Burnley when they lost the dependable Tom Heaton to a shoulder injury in September.

The rather unheralded Nick Pope took his place and has kept six clean sheets in 12 appearances since. His man-of-the-match performance in a 1-0 win at Southampton last month was demonstrative of his excellent reflexes and shot-stopping prowess.

Pope’s rise from obscurity comes in a World Cup year, and with Joe Hart dropped to the West Ham bench at the weekend his chance for international recognition is now.

He will find himself directly competing against his nearest competitor for the No 1 jersey when Jack Butland lines up in the Stoke goal.

After conceding five to a rampant Tottenham at Wembley on Saturday, Butland will be determined to prove it was a one-off as calls grow for him to take Hart’s place on a permanent basis.

Publicly called out by his manager at the weekend for taking penalty duties off Luka Milivojevic, Christian Benteke’s stock at Selhurst Park has never been lower.

He became the pantomime villain after his stoppage-time penalty miss cost Crystal Palace all three points against Bournemouth.

It was the nadir of what has proved to be a disappointing second season at Palace - he has yet to score in 11 games this season.

The Belgian has the highest expected goals total of all players yet to score a Premier League goal in 2017-19 - 4.09.

None of his 24 shots have hit the back of the net, and Palace fans will be dearly hoping he can respond by breaking his duck for the campaign.

Roy Hodgson will need him firing if he is to rescue the Eagles from the relegation dropzone, and a midweek game is perfect timing for a quick response.

Can David Wagner upset the odds at the John Smith’s again?

David Wagner’s side seemed to be finally finding Premier League life difficult in recent weeks after four consecutive defeats saw them sucked towards the relegation zone.

A big, and much deserved, win over Brighton on Saturday was just the tonic for the German, who has been reliant on home form for Huddersfield’s bright beginning to life back in the top-flight.

Four of their five wins have come at the John Smith’s Stadium, and only Tottenham and Manchester City have emerged victorious there.

Antonio Conte’s men have won five times on the road already this year, but will have to be a lot more proactive on Tuesday then they were in defeat at the London Stadium at the weekend.

A rivalry renewed at St James’ Park, with a lot to play for

One of the great managerial feuds of Premier League history will be rekindled on Wednesday night when Rafa Benitez and Sam Allardyce meet in the dugouts once more.

Their clashes have been many and varied since Bolton inflicted Benitez’s first defeat in England in August 2004, and it will be the sixth different version of their rivalry at St James’ Park in midweek.

Benitez often found himself at odds with Allardyce’s uncompromising style, and the two were at loggerheads when the latter accused the former of disrespecting his Blackburn side after a Fernando Torres header in April 2009.

Allardyce took particular pleasure in inflicting the Spaniard’s first defeat as Chelsea manager at Upton Park in December 2012, and the pair finished honours even when they last encountered each other in the Tyne-Wear derby in March 2016.

Earlier in the season Allardyce had aimed barbs at Benitez for claiming he had ‘nothing to do’ with Liverpool’s Champions League win in his autobiography, and finished it by relegating the Spaniard.

Newcastle are now without a win in seven and sliding towards the bottom three. Benitez would relish nothing more than ending his barren run by ending Sam Allardyce’s unbeaten start at Everton.

Can Puel make it five in a row against his old club?

Richard Keys tweeted ‘RIP British coaching’ when Claude Puel replaced Craig Shakespeare at Leicester, but the Frenchman has kickstarted a renaissance in the 2016 champions.

From the depths of the relegation zone when he took charge in October, the Foxes are now eighth in the table.

Lost and ponderous under Craig Shakespeare, there has been a return to the direct running and approach play that so characterised them when Claudio Ranieri made history at the King Power Stadium.

Riyad Mahrez is in his best shape since claiming the PFA Player of the Year trophy, having been directly involved in eight goals this season - only one fewer than in the whole of last year.

Demarai Gray has become a key first-team player, and has netted three times in his last seven appearances.

The attacking bravado that has returned to Leicester is firmly at odds with the dour, conservative style Puel presided over at Southampton last year.

The Frenchman is not missed at St Mary’s, despite their struggles this year under Mauricio Pellegrino, but he would relish making it five wins in a row against his former employers.

Can Pep Guardiola make it 15 from 15?

People knew Manchester City were going to be good under Pep Guardiola. They were good under Guardiola last year, but only in fits and starts.

People expected Manchester City to be good this season. No one expected City to be this good this season.

An 11-point cushion at the top after only 16 games is preposterous, but then they have played preposterously good football. And when the going has got tough they have always found a way to win.

Ronald Koeman’s dishevelled Everton side are the only team to take points off them this season, in the second game of the campaign back in August.

Since then Guardiola’s men have racked up a record-equalling 14 Premier League wins in a row.

They can break that record set by Arsenal’s 2002 vintage - over two separate seasons - on Wednesday, and have placid opponents in Swansea standing before them.

Wilfried Bony’s late winner saved them against West Brom on Saturday, and eased Paul Clement’s desperation for three points against the champions elect.

Jurgen Klopp has drawn criticism for resting Liverpool’s big guns in one of their biggest games of the season on Sunday.

The circumstances of the 1-1 draw with Everton - missed chances, an acrimonious penalty decision and Klopp’s subsequent fury - threaten to arrest the momentum gained from scoring 12 goals in two games.

Wednesday’s opponents, West Brom, have not won a game since August - yet somehow are not in the relegation zone -and have not received the anticipated Alan Pardew bounce that was expected.

All eyes will be on Klopp’s teamsheet, for the German has made more starting eleven changes than any over Premier League manager this season, so expect another raft of changes.

The 59 he has made in the first 16 games trail only Manchester United’s 68 in 2001-02. That year United started badly but finished strongly.

Klopp, who has seen Liverpool respond to defeat at Tottenham with five wins in seven is, may start to feel vindicated by his constant rotation if they avoid the rut they entered this time last year with a much smaller squad.

With one Premier League strike in nine games since September, Romelu Lukaku’s travails in front of goal are officially becoming a problem for Manchester United.

He made two decisive penalty area contributions to Manchester City’s win at Old Trafford on Sunday - unfortunately they both came in his own box.

And he missed two glaring opportunities to finally make his mark on a big-six clash for United.

Pressure is growing on the Belgian striker, whose £75m fee looks as laughable now as it looked justified when he banged in 11 in his first 10 games. Maybe the truth lies, as ever, somewhere in the middle.

But Jose Mourinho may now see it as the right time to remove the summer signing from the limelight, with a certain Zlatan Ibrahimovic waiting to make the first start of his second spell at Old Trafford.

The 36-year-old has made five substitute appearances this season, but now might be the time to unleash Zlatan and hand him his first start since April.

Have Spurs got over their Wembley problem?

A 1-0 win at Swansea in November put Chris Hughton’s side eighth in the table, but they have failed to win any of their last five since and were properly picked apart for the first time by Liverpool 10 days ago.

Hughton comes up against the side where he made his name as a player in the 1980s on Wednesday night with Brighton just four points above the drop zone.

Tottenham’s run of one win in six came to an end with the visit of a generous Stoke to Wembley on Saturday.

While that was a routine run-out, it has been anything but when bottom 10 sides have come to Spurs’ temporary home this season.

Burnley held them to a 1-1 draw in August, Swansea kept it scoreless and West Brom escaped with a point last month.

Bournemouth and Crystal Palace were both beaten, but only by a single goal. Mauricio Pochettino can’t continue making it such an ordeal in home matches against the weaker sides in the division.

Wednesday night may show us if the Stoke demolition job was the sign of things to come.

The last time West Ham beat Arsenal at home Wenger reacted angrily to celebrations from Pardew after a dramatic late winner from Harewood.

Much has changed since November 2006, if not in the Arsenal dugout. And that has typified a strong record for the Gunners against their London rivals.

The Hammers have won just one of their last 18 Premier League meetings with Arsenal (W1 D3 L14), with that win coming at the Emirates Stadium in August 2015.

David Moyes’ nightmare December run will come to an end after the visit of Arsenal to the London Stadium on Wednesday.

After coming so close to nicking a point at Manchester City, he was delighted with his side’s steel in defeat Chelsea on Saturday.

Will hard work be enough to beat an Arsenal side that looked decidedly stale in a 1-1 draw at Southampton on Sunday?

Scout Selection: Austin backed to fire

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin (£6.2m) has timed his ascent as a Fantasy Premier League option perfectly.

With premium-priced FPL forwards struggling to keep pace with Harry Kane (£12.9m), it is the Southampton striker who now provides an in-form alternative.

He is in The Scout’s best XI for Gameweek 17, reverting back to a familiar 3-4-3 formation.

The Burnley goalkeeper has claimed six clean sheets in 12 starts since Gameweek 5 and is part of a Clarets side who have conceded only three times at Turf Moor. He hosts Stoke City, who have managed fewer shots on target in their last four Gameweeks (10) than all but Swansea City (7).

A fourth goal of the season in Sunday’s Manchester derby has earned the top-scoring defender for goals 146,000+ transfers in this Gameweek. He travels to Swansea, who have scored only five goals in eight home matches.

Moses produced two assists in his previous Gameweek start and is set to return to the teamsheet for a trip to Huddersfield Town, Chelsea look to have a good opportunity for an eighth clean sheet at John Smith’s Stadium, as only Brighton & Hove Albion (42) have registered fewer penalty-area shots than the Terriers (45) this season.

With Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp continuing his rotation policy, Alexander-Arnold is poised for a start at home to a West Bromwich Albion side who have yet to score under Alan Pardew. The right-back has created 11 chances from only five appearances this season.

The top-scoring player returns to the Scout Selection for the West Brom visit. Salah has supplied points in each of the last eight Gameweeks and has fired more attempts on target at home (20) than any player. No side have allowed more shots (67) over the last four Gameweeks than his Gameweek opponents.

Alvaro Morata’s (£10.8m) absence for the trip to Huddersfield should guarantee Hazard’s start and possibly shift him to a central striker role. The Belgian has returned 39 FPL points in his last four away matches.

The top-scoring player in the previous Gameweek, Son produced 16 points thanks to a goal and two assists. More than 76,000 new owners will hope that he retains a starting role to inflict similar damage to the Brighton & Hove Albion defence.

Three goals in six starts under new manager Claude Puel has transformed Gray’s FPL prospects. Deployed in a No 10 role, no Leicester City player has had more shots (eight) or shots in the penalty area (six) than Gray over the last four Gameweeks.

Limited to a cameo role from the bench in Sunday’s Merseyside derby, we are backing the Brazilian to return to the starting line-up to face West Brom. Firmino has five goals and two assists in his last four starts in all competitions.

A brace against Stoke City helped calm concerns over his home form at Wembley Stadium. Backed by 54% of his two million owners with the captaincy for that match, that percentage will surely grow for Wednesday’s meeting with Brighton. Kane wears our armband once again.

The Southampton striker has hit four goals in as many Gameweeks to boost his FPL status, attracting 110,000+ new owners ahead of tonight’s 18:45 GMT deadline. He now hosts a Leicester City side who have allowed 43 shots on target in away matches, only three sides conceding more.

Southampton v Leicester City

Show/hide article…

Southampton full-back Cedric Soares could return from the hamstring injury that caused him to miss Sunday’s draw with Arsenal.

Leicester manager Claude Puel will have Shinji Okazaki available, despite the Japan international suffering a head injury against Newcastle.

Robert Huth and Matty James remain long-term absentees with respective ankle and Achilles injuries.

Tony Husband: "You wouldn’t blame Claude Puel for having mixed emotions on his return to Southampton. He took Saints to a first major cup final in 14 years and, in a fixture-congested season of 53 games, steered them to eighth in the league.

"Without that record, I doubt he would have got the Leicester job.

"The side he brings to the south coast couldn’t be a bigger contrast to the one he led by the end of last season.

"Leicester have regained that swashbuckling buzz they had during their title-winning season. Puel has also picked a settled side, something he rarely did at St Mary’s.

“Statistically, Southampton are no better under Puel’s successor Mauricio Pellegrino. But as Puel would probably admit after his own experiences, statistics don’t mean everything.”

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino: "It will be crucial to try to keep the ball as much as possible, and to try to be really balanced when we’re close to them with the ball.

"They have the quality to attack as quick as possible. But they have pace, quality between the lines, they defend well as a block.

“It will be difficult, a tough game.”

Leicester City manager Claude Puel: "It will be a strange feeling, of course, to go back to St Mary’s Stadium.

"It will be nice to see some familiar faces, but the most important thing, like it is for the players, is to keep a good focus.

“We start a busy period with all these games so it will be important for players to be fresh every time that we play. Time will tell - hopefully we will have a good response to this.”

Leicester boss Claude Puel returns to St Mary’s Stadium on the back of three straight wins and I think they will end up in seventh place at the end of the season, which shows what a good team they are.

Southampton are another side who should be looking for a top-half finish.
