West Brom 0-1 Southampton - 5 things we learned from the Hawthorns

Show/hide article…

Jordy Clasie scored his first Premier League goal for Southampton with a stylish winner against West Brom.

Clasie rifled into the top corner from the edge of the box in the 25 minute from Dusan Tadic’s lay-off.

Salomon Rondon might have equalised before the break but his header was superbly saved one-handedly by Fraser Forster.

Southampton were the better side as Dutch international Clasie impressed in midfield in the absence of Oriol Romeu.

Albion have now only won once in six games since reaching the safety make of 40 points.

Dusan Tadic continues to look a bargain buy following his £10.9million signing in July 2014 from FC Twente.

His assist for Saints’ opener means he now has 24 Premier League assists.

Only Cesc Fabregas (32) Mesut Ozil (30) and Christian Eriksen (26) have more since he arrived in England.

Jake Livermore, James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond all featured in the international break for England with the Saints pair making their senior debuts as subs in the Germany game.

Albion’s Livermore won his second cap starting in the game but Ward-Prowse and Redmond all enjoyed this contest more.

Southampton dominated first half possession as the game passed Livermore by but Ward-Prowse and Redmond were heavily involved for the visitors and impressed before they were subbed to give some of the club’s youngsters a chance.

Baggies boss Tony Pulis admits he wants more firepower this summer with Watford’s Brummie striker Troy Deeney in his sights and you can see why.

Albion’s top scorer this season is 37-year-old centre-back Gareth McAuley, who has eight goals.

Salomon Rondon scored seven goals before Christmas but has not scored since.

The Venezuelan’s head appears to have been turned by a lucrative January bid from China as he has not been the same since.

Matt Phillips returned to boost to West Brom after a hamstring injury in February.

Before his injury, the Scottish international winger had five goals and eight assists.

He was back in action against Saints but wasn’t as effective as his last appearance.

He was also lucky to escape with just a caution for a late tackle before being subbed on 62 minutes.

Shane Long, 30, returned to The Hawthorns to continue to be a thorn in Albion’s side.

His direct running help tee up the opener as he continues to make a mockery of Albion’s decision to sell him to Hull in January 2014 for £7million.

Within eight months he was sold on to Southampton for £12million and he continues to give the South Coast club good service three years on.

West Brom 0-1 Southampton: Jordy Clasie fires Saints to victory

Show/hide article…

On his 37th Premier League appearance, Jordy Clasie finally gave headline writers a moment to cherish.

The Southampton midfielder scored his first top-flight goal with a strike worthy of his name to reignite the race for eighth that is keeping all eyes glued.

In seriousness, this is a defeat that will irritate West Bromwich Albion greatly.

For so long Tony Pulis’s side have been on course to finish in the highest position anybody might have expected of them – behind only Everton and the established top six – but suddenly Southampton are within range.

Four points for Southampton in their two games in hand will see Claude Puel’s team leapfrog West Brom and the desire from Pulis and his players to avoid that fate was illustrated into the final exchanges at the Hawthorns.

Fraser Forster was required to make two fine saves in stoppage time to ensure a clean sheet. His first was a spectacular diving effort from Craig Dawson’s close-range shot, before Allan Nyom sent the rebound over.

Forster’s second was a reactive stop, clawing away Jonny Evans’ toe-poke from Nacer Chadli’s corner with Ben Foster up to cause confusion. Pulis, who had made three attacking substitutions by the 66th minute, wheeled away with angst etched on his face.

This fight for mid-table superiority had got off to an inauspicious start with both sets of players failing to shake the impression they were enjoying the first sunshine of spring by strolling around the grass.

Action eventually arrived in the 20th minute when James Morrison arrived onto Salomon Rondon’s knock-down and fired a firm shot from the edge of the area. Forster got down well but only parried the ball to Chadli. Fortunately for Southampton the Belgian lashed over.

Five minutes later, Clasie showed how it should be done. For all Southampton’s pretty play, they are not against the occasional long ball when operating with a centre-forward brought up on Gaelic football.

Shane Long’s spring allowed him to gain control of Forster’s clearance and feed Dusan Tadic, who ignored James Ward-Prowse in space on the right to lay back to Clasie. The diminutive Dutch midfielder struck a glorious finish into the top corner leaving Foster no chance.

Puel, who had called out in frustration at his team’s profligacy for much of the half, gave a double fisted salute in celebration.

Long was in the thick of it again five minutes before the break, speeding almost clear but falling as Evans moved in for the tackle. For a split second it seemed a foul and red card but Long made no protestations, the best guess being he had tripped of his own accord.

That did not stop West Brom fans hurling abuse. They have targeted their former striker ever since he won a controversial penalty for Hull in his first game as an opponent.

As the home supporters jeered their team won possession and broke quickly through Chadli down the right flank. His deep cross found Rondon, who applied a header back across goal only for Forster to save superbly.

Morrison fed the rebound to Jake Livermore but his effort was errant.

A minute before the break Southampton nearly doubled their lead. Nathan Redmond buzzed into an opening on the left and curled a cross crying out to be headed home but Long directed the ball just wide.

Pulis acted decisively in a bid to turn the game round, making all his substitutions by the 66th minute, including replacing captain Darren Fletcher with Hal Robson-Kanu. But it was Southampton who produced the more incisive attacks initially, Foster twice needing to be alert to stop Redmond shots.

Tadic shot curled another effort wide after an error Foster, but that was the last opportunity Southampton had to attack. The West Brom cavalry charged repeatedly but could not find a way through.

West Brom 0-1 Southampton: Jordy Clasie fires Saints to victory

Show/hide article…

Jordy Clasie scored his first Premier League goal as Southampton recorded a 1-0 win over West Brom at The Hawthorns.

Clasie, starting in place of the injured Steven Davis, made the most of a rare start in midfield by firing the Saints in front midway through the first half after superb hold up play from Dusan Tadic.

Southampton came close to doubling their lead after the break when Tadic curled an ambitious effort narrowly wide of the mark.

West Brom pushed hard for an equaliser but were denied on a number of occasions by Fraser Forster, who made a series of key saves in the dying moments to secure the Saints all three points.

Southampton’s front four of Shane Long, James Ward-Prowse, Nathan Redmond and Tadic combined well in the opening stages but it was the hosts who had the first real chance of the match when James Morrison stung the palms of Forster with a well-struck drive from long-range.

And for all of Southampton’s intricate play in and around the West Brom box, their opener came from a long punt downfield from the England international goalkeeper.

West Brom failed to deal with the ball, allowing Tadic to eventually feed Clasie at the edge of the box.

The Dutchman made no mistake with his first-time finish - firing past Ben Foster to grab his first Premier League goal after 37 appearances for the Saints.

Claude Puel’s side were boosted by the opener and could have doubled their lead shortly afterwards but Long slipped at the vital moment when clean through on goal.

West Brom were creating as many chances at the other end and came close to an equaliser when Forster dived to keep out Salomon Rondon’s goal bound header.

The match continued in the same vein after the break with Southampton dominating possession but with the Baggies carrying a real threat on the break.

Tadic curled a speculative shot just inches over the bar shortly before substitute Hal Robson-Kanu blasted a close-range effort off target under pressure from the onrushing Forster.

With time running out, West Brom continued to push men forward and were almost rewarded in the closing stages when Dawson fired a volley towards goal - only to see his shot saved by Forster with Allan Nyom unable to convert the resulting rebound.

Jonny Evans had one last chance to salvage a draw for the hosts but his tame close-range effort was punched to safety by Forster in the fifth and final minute of injury time as Claude Puel’s side held out for a hard-fought victory.

West Brom 0 Southampton 1: Jordy Clasie ends fine West Brom home run

Show/hide article…

Jordy Clasie provided a moment of clarity on an otherwise unproductive afternoon for both teams in front of goal, to settle this contest in Southampton’s favour.

At times West Bromwich Albion’s performance resembled the gridlocked traffic outside the Hawthorns that threatened to delay kick-off. No way through.

This reversal represented a fourth defeat in six outings for Albion who have been crawling towards the 49 point tally accumulated during their best-ever Premier League campaign, which yielded an eighth place finish, in 2013.

The Baggies were more than a touch unfortunate on this occasion with the excellence of England goalkeeper Fraser Forster, and some errant finishing, responsible for their downfall.

West Bromwich Albion 0-1 Southampton: Clasie’s first Premier League goal ensures back-to-back wins

Show/hide article…

JORDY Clasie’s first Premier League goal gave Saints a vital victory in their quest for a top-eight finish.

The Dutchman’s outstanding 25th-minute strike, a 20-yarder that flew into the top corner, proved to be the winner at the Hawthorns.

It closed the gap on eighth-placed West Brom to four points and completed an excellent eight days for Saints, who have two games in hand on the Baggies.

Claude Puel’s side has taken seven points from their last three games and back-to-back wins - and three wins from their last four away games - mean a fourth successive top-eight finish now looks very achievable.

Without Manolo Gabbiadini and with Shane Long struggling to make an impact, there was no end product from Saints in the first 25 minutes, despite attractive approach play from Dusan Tadic, Nathan Redmond and Ryan Bertrand.

Saints were relieved the offside flag was raised when Phillips’ pass behind the back four was curled into the feet of the lurking Salomon Rondon, who had screwed wide an early shot and been dispossessed by the impressive Maya Yoshida.

Fraser Forster had an excellent afternoon and was forced into the first save in the 20th minute when, after chesting the ball down 25 yards out, the recalled James Morrison drove a half-volleyed left-footer goalwards.

Forster was equal to it, diving low to his left to palm it away.

Yoshida slid into dispossess Rondon after a clever pass from Nacer Chadli and West Brom won a corner when Bertrand blocked Craig Dawson’s cross. Fortunately, the near-post header flashed across goal.

Saints countered but Redmond’s cross was inaccurate and Matt Phillips responded with an electric run along the Saints byline, winning a corner that was overhit.

Then Clasie produced the game’s first moment of real quality, a first-time 20-yarder that fairly flew in to the top right corner.

In the absence of Steven Davis (injured) and Oriol Romeu (suspended), the Dutchman was playing at the base of the Saints midfield alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Whe he popped up on the edge of the WBA area he drove the ball, from Tadic’s lay-off, past the stationary Ben Foster.

Long played the ball inside to Tadic, who showed great composure to turn and pass for the unmarked Clasie to rifle in his first-ever Premier League goal.

The strike was very similar to his only other goal for Saints, in the 2-0 EFL Cup win against Arsenal at the Emirates in November, and was a fine way to mark his first start since January.

Hitherto, the game had had an end-of-season feel in glorious sunshine. But with West Brom within catching distance in eighth position, Saints had plenty to play for.

Encouraged by their goal, they continued to attack.

Tadic drove a free-kick in the Baggies wall after the dangerous Redmond was tripped by Allan Nyom.

Saints argued the case for another dead ball when former Baggies forward Shane Long appeared to be brought down on the edge of the area after being put through by Tadic.

Replays showed any contact from Jonny Evans to be minimal, as the home fans heaped abuse on Long.

Shortly afterwards, Forster’s athleticism was needed to maintain Saints’ lead Nacer Chadli’s right-footed outswinger was headed across goal by Rondon from six yards out at the far post.

But Forster was equal to it, diving to his left before clawing the ball away one-handed.

At the other end, Long failed to hit the target with a diving header from Redmond’s cross.

Phillips was booked at the start of the second half for a foul on Clasie and Redmond jinked into the area before his shot was blocked.

Foster came out of his area to head clear from Long, following a lobbed pass from Tadic, who half- volleyed a shot narrowly wide before West Brom responded with the substitution of Gareth McAuley, who was replaced by Chris Brunt at left-back.

Foster was equal to a Bertrand cross at his near post.

Long waved to the West Brom fans as they continued to vilify him and left the pitch to chants of ‘he’s going to cry in a minute’ after a clash of heads with Craig Dawson, before being booed as he came back on.

Phillips was replaced by James McLean just past the hour, shortly after Jake Livermore had driven WBA’s first shot of the second half over the bar.

There were appeals for a penalty when Forster dived at the feet of Rondon. With 25 minutes left, Darren Fletcher was replaced by Hal Robson-Kanu, who scored the winning goal when West Brom won at St Mary’s on New Year’s Eve.

Redmond was Saints’ biggest goal threat in the first 20 minutes of the second half.

After firing one shot at Foster he did well to volley Cedric Saores’ cross on target, but Foster was equal to it at his near post. Saints were grateful Chadli fired straight at Forster when well placed to replicate Clasie’s goal.

The 24,697 crowd (including 2,289 Saints supporters) was the biggest for a Premier League match at the Hawthorns since Manchester United’s visit four months ago and they made their presence felt as West Brom went in search of an equaliser.

Forster did well as subs McLean and Robson-Kanu threatened to make an impact before Cedric, having been booked for a foul, conceded a corner against McLean.

Forster punched clear and Yoshida, who was excellent against Rondon all afternoon, thwarted him twice more.

Hojbjerg received treatment after going down under a challenge from Livermore but it was Clasie who went off before play resumed, replaced by Harrison Reed with six minutes left.

Forster ensured that Clasie’s goal was the winner with a save-of-the-season contender from Dawson’s flying volley in injury-time.

Saints breathed a sigh of relief when Morrison fired the rebound over the bar and Forster ensured a well-deserved clean sheet with a brilliant tip over the bar from Evans.

Forster: That caps off a good week

Show/hide article…

Saints have now picked up seven points from their last three games, and Forster admitted that they had to dig deep for the win at the Hawthorns.

“We’ve really dug in today,” he started.

“Obviously it was a hot day and very fatiguing as the game went on, but it was a fantastic team performance and that caps off a great week for us.

“It was always going to be hard place to come and the game got broken up a bit in the second half, but luckily we held out for all three points.”

Jordy Clasie’s strike will go down in the record books as sealing the victory against West Brom, though Forster’s heroics will be remembered by those watching.

The England ‘keeper made a number of saves to keep Saints in the game, most notably a late stop from Craig Dawson’s point-bank range volley.

“I am just happy to contribute,” Forster continued.

“The defence have been awesome this season and today it was my turn to be there to put in a helping hand.

“It’s a fantastic win for us and hopefully it can set us up to finish the season strongly now.”

Puel: We showed quality and character

Show/hide article…

Saints ran out deserved winners at the Hawthorns, thanks to Jordy Clasie’s first-half goal, although they had to stand up to some significant pressure late on, with Fraser Forster making some vital saves in the dying stages.

“It was a great performance, getting a clean sheet away against West Bromwich, who are a strong side,” said Puel.

"We dealt the whole second half with direct play and long balls, free-kicks, second balls. It was very difficult to defend against this.

"It was a very good first half with quality, and we saw the good spirit and character in the second half to resist and to take these three points. Fraser did a fantastic job and he saved the three points at the end of the game.

"It was a whole team effort. When we attack, all the team attacks, and when we defend all the team defends. We saw this. Shane [Long] was coming back to defend, and he produced a courageous game, with fantastic work for the team.

"It’s a great result and I am happy. It’s fantastic, and I think we deserved this result with our quality in the first half and our character in the second half.

I enjoyed being back on the pitch, says Clasie

Show/hide article…

The 25-year-old was given a starting berth in midfield for the trip to West Bromwich Albion and netted the game’s winning goal on 25 minutes.

Though, despite his own match-winning effort, Clasie admitted he was just pleased to help Saints to all three points.

“I am really proud to get the win,” he started.

"Also for my own situation, as well. I think it’s always hard to come back after nine weeks not in the team.

“You want to do yourself proud and there is pressure, but you tell yourself you just need to be focussed and play well. I enjoyed being back on the pitch today.”

Clasie’s strike was his first Premier League goal since joining Southampton from Feyenoord in 2015.

And it had an uncanny resemblance to the one he netted during Saints’ EFL Cup victory over Arsenal at Emirates Stadium.

“It was a bit similar,” Clasie continued.

"I saw Dušan turn so shouted and the ball was perfect for my right foot. From there all you can do is it hit it good, which I managed to do.

“Of course it was nice to play and score, but the most important thing today was to win and get the three points.”

Jordy Clasie scores first Premier League goal to give Southampton victory over West Brom

Show/hide article…

Fraser Forster’s late heroics sealed a 1-0 win for Southampton after Jordy Clasie bagged his first Premier League goal at West Brom.

The pair combined to earn a deserved win for the Saints during a pedestrian game which only briefly came to life.

Saints closed the gap to Albion to four points - and they have two games in hand as the teams battle for eighth spot.

But Claude Puel’s side only secured back-to-back wins thanks to goalkeeper Forster, who denied Craig Dawson and Jonny Evans in stoppage time.

In contrast, Albion were condemned to a second straight defeat and they have won just once in their last six games as their attempt to break the 50 points barrier for the first time in the Premier League continues to stutter.

The hosts rarely looked like scoring until the end - but found Forster in inspired form.

Neither side, both comfortably mid-table, were in a rush to make an impact at The Hawthorns and it took until the 20th minute for the first real chance when Forster parried James Morrison’s 25-yard drive and Nacer Chadli fired the rebound well over.

The game again drifted for another five minutes until, out of the blue, Clasie won it.

Nathan Redmond, Shane Long and Dusan Tadic were all involved as Tadic teed up Clasie to drill just his second goal of the season from the edge of the area.

It was the midfielder’s first goal since November - and first in any league for two years - and broke the monotony at The Hawthorns.

The goal at least triggered a flurry of action as Redmond sent Long through - but the striker stumbled under Evans’ challenge, although there was no appeal from the former Baggies striker for a free-kick.

It was then Albion’s turn to threaten briefly when they finally conjured a chance seven minutes before half-time, only for Forster to palm away Salomon Rondon’s looping far post header.

Long then headed wide at the the end of the half and Southampton restarted with greater endeavour with Long, Redmond and Tadic threatening but often failing in the final third.

The Baggies huffed and puffed but lacked the invention to level and James McClean’s penalty appeals were waved away after he tumbled under pressure from Forster, before Ben Foster saved well from Redmond’s snap volley.

But the goalkeeper nearly gifted Southampton a second goal when his poor clearance fell to Tadic and the midfielder curled over with 20 minutes left.

The Saints, though, clung onto their slender lead as the Baggies pressed but could not find a way through thanks to Forster’s match-winning saves in stoppage time.

First, Dawson was not tracked as he latched onto Jake Livermore’s lofted pass but Forster pulled off a brilliant one-handed reaction stop to beat away the defender’s six-yard volley.

Then, a minute later, the England goalkeeper turned Evans’ late header away to seal victory.

West Bromwich Albion 0-1 Southampton: Puel delighted with ‘fantastic Fraser’

Show/hide article…

Saints boss Claude Puel was delighted with his side for boosting their top-eight chances by ‘taking revenge’ against West Brom.

After Jordy Clasie’s first-half strike secured a second win in four days, Puel said: “It was important to take a little revenge because we lost our home game against this opposition.

“It was a fantastic result as we try to move up the table. The spirit of the players has been perfect all week, it’s important to keep a good ambition for the end of the season and a great challenge to continue this confidence against Manchester City.”

Fraser Forster pulled off some outstanding saves to ensure the win, particularly two in injury-time to deny Craig Dawson and Jonny Evans.

“Fraser was fantastic,” Puel continued. “We had many first-half opportunities but without the second goal we showed character in the second half.

“It’s difficult to play against this team and their direct play, their long balls and free kicks. But we resisted and to take three points was fantastic.

“I’m happy for the team because it’s a good reward for the quality of the first half and the character of the second half.”

On Clasie’s second Saints goal, Puel added: “I think he can do better because he has a fantastic shot, good quality technique and very good feet.

“I’m happy for him and Pierre-Emile [Hojbjerg] because they have not had a lot of game time. To give this response was important for them and the team. They showed good spirit.”

Claude Puel hails Southampton’s spirit after West Brom win

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Claude Puel hailed the “character, spirit and attitude” of his side after they held off a late West Brom onslaught at the Hawthorns.

Jordy Clasie scored the only goal of the game as the Saints claimed a hard-fought 1-0 win against the Baggies.

Fraser Forster produced a number of key saves in the closing stages to protect the slender one-goal advantage and Puel was pleased with the defensive commitment shown by his under-strength side.

“We had a fantastic first half but with just one goal. Afterwards in the second half it was very difficult because it was always long balls and direct play from West Brom,” he said.

"With all their free-kicks it was difficult to defend. We resisted very well, with Fraser, and I think it is a good reward for all - a clean sheet against West Brom.

“It’s perfect because before the game they had scored 19 goals from free-kicks and it’s a good challenge, a good success [for us] here.”

Southampton fielded an unfamiliar midfield pairing of Clasie and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, with Steven Davis injured and Oriol Romeu suspended for the match.

Clasie capped a fine performance with a superb strike from outside the box, while Puel was also impressed with Hojbjerg’s combative approach.

“It was a good game for Clasie and Hojbjerg also. They stayed serious, with conviction, with quality in training and when they heard of the possibility to play they kept their level,” Puel said.

“This is important, the squad is fantastic. You can see this today because it was good intensity and quality in the first half and character, spirit and attitude in the second half to resist and keep the three points. It is fantastic.”

Southampton are now just four points behind West Brom in the race for eighth place and Puel insists it is important his team maintain their focus as the season draws to a close.

“It is important to take every game step by step,” he said. "The next game, for example, against Manchester City will be very difficult.

"But it will be a strong challenge, interesting for this young team and we learn every time. Together, it was a good response after the [EFL Cup] Final.

“It is a good thing because it is important to keep good ambitions until the end of the season.”
