Popular Saints fan suffers fatal heart attack in Southampton store

Show/hide article…

HE WAS a lifelong Saints fan who in the words of the club “put a smile on everyone’s face”.

Jason Tizzard was a popular figure in the Woolston area of Southampton as well as being a firm favourite with customers at the fast food restaurant where he worked.

Now his heartbroken family have launched a campaign to equip Woolston with a life-saving defibrillator following his death from a heart attack.

Jason 48, collapsed moments after entering the Max 99p store in Victoria Road and died in front of his sister, despite desperate attempts to resuscitate him.

At least one business in the area is planning to close as a mark of respect during his funeral on Monday.

The service at Wessex Vale Crematorium in Hedge End is set to be a red and white affair, with scores of fellow fans turning up in their Saints shirts.

Club bosses have sent Jason’s family a letter describing him as a “passionate and loyal supporter” and praising their bid to buy a defibrillator in his memory.

The letter, which has been placed in his coffin, says: “Should the equipment ever be needed, it will be in Jason’s name that a life will be saved.”

One of the people who fought to resuscitate him was Max 99p employee Touna Burrows.

She said: “He collapsed before we could get him a chair and went into a coma. I phoned 999 and carried out CPR until the ambulance arrived.

“I was really upset that I didn’t manage to save him.”

Jason was on a shopping trip with his sister, Alison Wells, when he started to feel unwell. He staggered into the shop and fell to the floor.

Alison, 46, of Southampton, also carried out CPR but was unable to help him.

Her husband David said the tragedy had brought the community closer together as well as highlighting the need for a defibrillator, which uses an electric shock to restart a patient’s heart.

“Once we started to talk to the shops we realised that Jason was a local personality and extremely well known,” he said.

“Jason’s favourite cafe, Coffee Mac, is closing on the day of his funeral as a mark of respect. They’ve been incredibly supportive and other shops who knew him are also keen to help.

“We’re absolutely amazed at the affection shown towards Jason. It’s fantastic to know he was so loved and looked after in his local community.”

Jason, who had learning difficulties, lived in supported housing in Sholing and worked part-time at McDonald’s in Hedge End.

The letter from Saints says he dedicated 20 years of his life “to helping customers and putting a smile on everyone’s face”.

David, 46, said: “His father died of a heart attack in the 1970s, when Jason was only five or six years old. His mother died about four years ago and his stepfather passed away in March last year.

“But Jason just seemed to smile and move on, which is one of the things that people loved about him.”

Southampton boss Claude Puel: This player has transformed our season

Show/hide article…

Maya Yoshida has come in for the injured Virgil van Dijk

Yoshida, 28, has divided opinion among Saints fans ever since his move from Dutch side VVV Venlo in 2012.

But the Japanese international has been in superb form deputising for injured skipper Virgil van Dijk and even grabbed a goal in Wednesday’s 3-1 win at home to Crystal Palace.

Speaking ahead of today’s trip to West Brom, boss Puel said: “He’s a strong player. Maya was not a starting player last season, but this season he’s fantastic and improved.

England debut inspires Redmond to go to the next level

Show/hide article…

SAINTS star Nathan Redmond is determined to take his game to another level now he is an England player.

Redmond equalled his best-ever goals tally in a season when he equalised in the 3-1 win against Crystal Palace on Wednesday night, a fortnight after making his England debut as a substitute against Germany.

After playing 25 minutes for England against the world champions, he has every incentive to keep improving.

“I didn’t expect to be as involved as I was and it’s given me an extra buzz of motivation,” he said.

“It’s something I always wanted to do and has shown me what’s achievable, but at the same time I know I have to set new levels for myself now.

“A lot more is going to be expected of me and there’s no time to rest on it. I’ve got more of a bit between my teeth now going into games.”

Goalscoring is just one area of Redmond’s game that has improved in his first season at St Mary’s.

His leveller against Palace was his seventh of the season, equalling his best-ever tally (for Birmingham City in the Championship in 2011-12).

Had it not been for an outstanding save by Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessy, he would also have netted with a fine header.

“The manager’s reiterated that I need to be in the box more and I think I’ve improved on that in the second half of the season,” he said.

“He wants me scoring more goals and back-post tap-ins and headers are where I may get four or five a season.

“He always says he wants more. We have our differences on the training pitch every now and then.

“It’s not a big secret that players and managers fall out, a lot of stuff he tells me I don’t agree with and there’s stuff I say he won’t agree with.

“But I know what he wants from me going into a game. There are some areas where I could be doing better, but no-one has a perfect game and I’m completely aware of that.

“He’s been drip feeding me the whole season with pointers about where to be and what runs to make. The major thing he’s wanted is a lot more forward runs.”

Redmond scored on his Saints debut in a central role, following his £10m move from Norwich City last summer.

But he prefers playing on the left of the three behind the out-and-out striker, from where he has scored three goals in four games since the EFL Cup final defeat.

“At the start of the season I was in a bit of confusion playing up front, I didn’t fully grasp it," he continued.

“But we’ve gone back to a formation I’m well equipped for, on the left of the 4-2-3-1 with Ryan [Bertrand], one of the best left-backs in the Premier League if not the best at the moment.

“It’s a comfy position to be in. Someone like Dusan [Tadic] will find you with a pass and with the inter play with Manolo, Shane, Jay - and Charlie still to come back - it’s an exciting team to be in. You know you have the freedom to just go and play.

“Since the cup final we’ve kicked on. It was vital we bounced back as quickly as possible at Watford.

“We didn’t have the rub of the green at Tottenham. We could easily have won that game, but we can make it seven points from three games [at West Brom today] and we’d have taken that last week.”
