Agent fees: Man City top table as Premier League clubs pay out £174m

Show/hide article…

Premier League clubs have paid out £174million to agents over the last two transfer windows with Manchester City and Chelsea the top spenders.

City spent £26.3m on agents’ fees while Chelsea spent £25.1m. Manchester United, meanwhile, spent £19m. There is also Liverpool on £13.8m and Arsenal on £10.2m on double figures.

West Ham spent £9.5m – more than Daniel Levy’s Tottenham Hotspur, who spent £7.2m.

Under FIFA regulations, the Football Association were forced to reveal how much each club from the Premier League down to the National League paid intermediaries in the last year.

As reported by Sportsmail three days ago, the FA have also had to announce the names of every agent who was involved in a transfer over the last two windows.

It gives fans a great insight into the fees of agents, which can be a touchy subject in football.

In the Championship, Newcastle United are the top spenders on agents on £10.4m. Aston Villa are nearest on £5.4m.

In League One, Charlton Athletic top the table on £608,465. In League Two, Portsmouth spent £175,344.

Interestingly, Hartlepool United are the only club in the Football League to have spent nothing on agents’ fees.

In the National League and below, Forest Green Rovers spent £174,613. Quirkily, Aldershot Town spent a total of £56.

It is recommended that agents – or intermediaries, as FIFA prefer to call them – are paid three per cent of a player’s contract. This can differ from deal to deal.

West Brom vs Southampton team news, injuries, suspensions and more

Show/hide article…

Matt Phillips could be restored to the West Brom starting line-up against Southampton at The Hawthorns.

The winger returned to action as a substitute in the defeat at Watford in midweek after missing five games with a hamstring problem, and if he has suffered no ill-effects then he will be back in the team on Saturday.

Baggies boss Tony Pulis has a couple of other unnamed players nursing minor niggles and they will be assessed before he decides whether to make changes after a lethargic display on Tuesday night.

Manolo Gabbiadini , Steven Davis, Ryan Bertrand and Sofiane Boufal, meanwhile, will all face late fitness tests for Southampton .

Gabbiadini (groin), Davis (ankle), Bertrand (hamstring) and Boufal (muscle issue) will all be given every chance to recover for the Hawthorns encounter.

West Bromwich Albion vs. Southampton - Football Match Preview - April 8, 2017 - ESPN

Show/hide article…

West Brom boss Tony Pulis admits Albion have missed Matt Phillips during his injury absence and hopes the winger will be fit to start against Southampton on Saturday.

Phillips returned to action as a substitute in the defeat at Watford in midweek after missing five games with a hamstring problem.

West Brom won just two of their matches without the 26-year-old, who signed from QPR last summer.

Pulis insists it was money well spent but he thinks there is more to come from the Scotland international.

“He’s been a very good signing for us,” he said.

"I’m hoping that he will be available to start on Saturday, but he is one of the ones we have to have a look at and see if he’s right. If he is and he’s feeling good and everyone is happy with the injury, then he has a great chance of starting the game.

"He’s important for us because he gives us that little bit more pace down the sides and the stats show that he’s created lots of chances for us - and he also has a good return on his goals as well.

"But I still think there’s still lots more to come from Matty. He’s a good kid and good around the place. He’s been fantastic for us.

“So he’s been a big miss for us, but having said that the players who have played and the teams we have put out in the past few weeks have all had a go and done their best, and that is all you can ask of them.”

West Brom have exceeded expectations this season. They go into the game against Southampton at The Hawthorns eighth in the Premier League - a place and seven points ahead of their opponents.

It looks like Albion will miss out on a place in the Europa League for next season, but Pulis wants his team to finish as high up the table as possible to help him attract a handful of players in the summer.

“Money is still the main reason why most players move but it (finishing high up the table) helps,” said Pulis.

"We need at least five or six players to come in and improve the club. That’s the aim and it’s not just one position, it’s all over the pitch. We have to keep pushing on and strengthening.

“We want people to come in and work as hard as the players who have been here are doing and give us a bit more quality.”

Claude Puel insists Southampton can boss the midfield at the Hawthorns without the suspended Oriol Romeu.

Former Chelsea star Romeu will start a two-match ban on Saturday after collecting 10 yellow cards for the season.

The Saints could also be without Steven Davis if the Northern Ireland midfielder fails to beat his ankle problem, but manager Puel has remained unfazed by his side’s injury concerns.

“We know the importance of Oriol of course,” said Puel.

"But we have (Jordy) Clasie and (Pierre) Hojbjerg who have trained very well.

“They always have a good spirit and attitude and I have confidence in them.”

Puel on West Brom’s threat

Show/hide article…

Saints turned in an all-action display in their 3-1 home win over Crystal Palace in midweek, and now head to the Hawthorns as they look to make it seven points from a possible nine.

A win would help reel their opponents in, with the Baggies currently one place above them in the table, in eighth, but seven points ahead.

“We know West Bromwich are strong, like Watford were, like this last game against Crystal Palace,” said Puel.

"They are a physical team, with direct play, a good structure and good organisation.

"It is difficult to find a solution against them. I hope we can recover after Wednesday’s game.

“West Bromwich will have four days between these two games and for us it’s just a two days and a half. For us, the recovery is difficult, but with a win it’s easier to recover.”

Ward-Prowse: Goals have come with confidence

Show/hide article…

The 22-year-old netted his second goal in three games against Crystal Palace, and believes it’s no coincidence his scoring form has coincided with a solid run in the starting eleven.

“It’s a great feeling to score any goal,” he started.

“But to seal the win and make sure Palace couldn’t come back into the game was a great feeling, and it has pushed us up the league nicely.

“I think the goals have come with the confidence. Any player strives with a run in the team, confidence from the manager and match fitness as well.”

As well as being in fine form for Saints, Ward-Prowse also made his senior England bow earlier in the month against Germany.

And the Academy graduate is now relishing the extra pressure that comes with being considered an England player.

“It has certainly felt like an important period for me,” he continued.

“With the England call-up as well there is always that added pressure that you will all of a sudden become an England player and you need to maintain that level.

“I want to stay in the senior squad and make sure that my performances for Southampton can keep me there. That’s an added pressure, but it’s a pressure that I thrive off.”

Ward-Prowse sets sights on West Brom

Show/hide article…

Saints currently sit seven points behind the Baggies with two games in hand, though only one place separate the two teams in the Premier League table.

And Ward-Prowse knows that a victory on Saturday could push Saints well on their way to catching Tony Pulis’ side.

“They are the people we are chasing at the minute,” explained the 22-year-old.

“So it’s a great opportunity for us to go there and pick up three points and cap off a good week for us.

“We were disappointed not to pick up three points against Bournemouth, but we showed great character midweek to come back and get the win.”

Ward-Prowse completed the scoring against Crystal Palace on Wednesday night, as Saints fought back to seal three valuable points at St Mary’s.

Though the Academy graduate was focused more on the impact the win could have in the final run of fixtures, rather than his individual contribution.

“The performance and win was massive for us,”

“We knew it was an important game to win and we can take confidence from that going to West Brom this weekend.

“Everybody knows what Tony Pulis and West Brom are about, so we have to make sure we are clinical in front of goal and again show our qualities.”
