Klopp disappointed but pledges to “strike back” at Saints

Show/hide article…

JURGEN Klopp admitted that there were two disappointed managers at St Mary’s last night.

The Liverpool boss stated that he was disappointed after his side’s performance, but pledged “everything will be different at Anfield” in the next second leg.

And the German said Saints boss Claude Puel would be similarly downbeat after winning “only” 1-0, ahead of a daunting trip to Anfield.

“In this moment, you have two disappointed managers after the game,” he said. “One because he lost and the performance wasn’t good and the other because he only won 1-0 and has to go to Anfield afterwards.

“So that’s how it is, but we will strike back. We will be a different team. It will be different.

“Everything will be different at Anfield. So for us it’s still possible to go to Wembley and that’s the target.”

He added: “I tried already – three, four times now, in other interviews, but I cannot make it better, with whatever I say.

“The start was good, the start was really good. We played how we wanted to play. And if we would have done this for 90 minutes, then it would have been very difficult for Southampton to cope with it.

“But after we conceded one goal, obviously, the game changed. Even I would try to explain it, it’s not that easy.

“I’m actually not used to a reaction like this from my boys but they have to accept that tonight it was not good.

“We had them again – we were then dominant again in the second-half, they had one or two counter-attacks – that’s how it is, that’s not a big problem.

“You have to defend them with passion. We had not a lot of chances – if we had some [at all].

“We had a lot of moments in and around the box where we could have had a chance but we didn’t make anything of it and that was the situation.

“So, the performance of course doesn’t feel too good. That’s how it is but for the final, I would think it’s open.”

THE VERDICT: Mission exceeded for battling Saints

Show/hide article…

It was not only a case of mission accomplished for Saints last night, but mission exceeded.

Claude Puel voiced the thoughts of probably the majority of Saints supporters before his side’s EFL Cup semi-final first leg at home to Liverpool – to make sure they were still in it heading to Anfield in a fortnight’s time.

Such has been the rut Saints have dug themselves into of late, and the attacking threat of Liverpool, there was a genuine concern that might not have been the case.

Saints were never likely to all but win the tie at St Mary’s, but there was a fear they could all but lose it.

However, as it has transpired they are not going to Anfield with a narrow deficit, or even a draw, but with something to defend.

Saints with a one goal advantage will be a tough nut to crack. Liverpool found that out last night.

Make no mistake, Saints will not play a lot differently away from home than they did at St Mary’s, and Jurgen Klopp’s team failed to break them down.

If they fail again then Saints are at Wembley.

The victory may not be decisive in terms of the tie, but in the wider context of the season it does feel very significant.

After a couple of bad weeks for Saints, they really needed something to lift the spirits and keep reason for optimism.

For so long it has been the prospect of the League Cup semi-final that has done that, so if the first leg would have ended on a particularly sour note it would have made life tough.

With Saints’ next five Premier League games all being against sides in the bottom half of the table, a sustained bad patch is something they can ill afford.

Now, though, they have every reason to keep hoping and keep dreaming ahead of the return leg, and be buoyed in the meantime by the confidence that they can compete at a high level, even if their style does look far more suited to facing Liverpool than West Brom or Burnley.

Saints put in a first half performance that you would say was a classic away team display, had they not been playing at St Mary’s.

They were the ones happy to use their underdog status as the perfect excuse to play the type of game Claude Puel seems to favour.

They sat deep, made themselves very hard to break down, and were happy to play on the counter attack.

It was more like we have seen teams such as West Brom inflict at St Mary’s rather than what Saints have been able to hand out themselves, probably due to the onus of playing at home.

But on an evening when most fans would have accepted containment as a top priority, it was not seen as a negative.

Indeed, it worked a treat, because, for all their possession – 65 per cent of it in the first period – Liverpool barely created a chance.

They actually resembled Saints when they have faced similar problems this season, probing in dangerous areas but with little incision with space so tight.

In fact, the only opening Liverpool created in the first period was on 18 minutes, when Emre Can’s chipped ball into the box was cushioned back by the head of Adam Lallana. Roberto Firmino met it on the half volley but Fraser Forster turned wide.

Saints really only got on top for a few minutes, but made it count.

Loris Karius was forced into two saves in quick succession, charging out to save at the feet of Nathan Redmond and getting his body behind a long range pile driver from Ryan Bertrand.

But he was helpless to prevent Redmond giving Saints the lead on 20 minutes.

Dusan Tadic and Jay Rodriguez combined and, allied by a misjudgement from Ragnar Klavan, and Redmond being played onside by some dozy defending, it gave the striker the chance to roll a low finish past Karius.

If there was to be one criticism of the first half it was that Saints didn’t go in further ahead as they created a golden opportunity to do just that two minutes before the break.

Tadic squared to Redmond under little pressure from eight yards out but his sidefooted shot was central and gave Karius every chance to make a save, which he duly did.

The second half was more of the same, but with fewer chances.

It seemed unlikely that Liverpool would dominate possession and create so little again, but such was Saints’ stubbornness in defence and excellence in midfield and closing the lines, that’s exactly what happened.

In fact, if Liverpool created only one clear cut chance in the first period, they managed absolutely none in the second.

Again, the best of what chances there were came Saints’ way.

A quick counter on 66 minutes ended with the overlapping Cedric Soares slashing a shot into the side netting when he should have either hit the target or found Rodriguez in the middle of the area, marked only by the backtracking Lallana.

Saints came even closer on 82 minutes, again on the counter, as Shane Long charged down the left and saw a deflected cross reach to Redmond. He produced a chipped finish that hit the underside of the bar and then Dejan Lovren on the line to prevent it from going in.

After the game there was perhaps a little frustration that Saints came away only with a one goal lead to take to Anfield, but if that is the biggest negative when, beforehand, there were some pretty gloomy predictions, it is more than acceptable.

It keeps this season very much alive.

Puel urges Redmond progress

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has urged Nathan Redmond to keep showing the kind of form that troubled Liverpool as he continues to adapt to life at Saints.

Redmond was a nightmare for the Liverpool defence in last night’s EFL Cup semi-final first leg at St Mary’s, and provided what proved to be the winning goal.

He could have had even more, such were the other chances that also came his way, but his all-round performance was enough to suggest to Puel that the £10m summer signing is finding his feet.

Puel said: “I am happy with the game of Nathan because I think he has a lot of quality.

“At the start of the season he played as a striker and it’s a mentality for him and it’s important he gives this possibility behind the defenders with good runs and control and to take risks or to play for run.

“With his run on the first goal it was interesting, and for the other chances also it was unlucky.

“I hope now he can continue to make this progress and to improve because he has a lot of quality, good feet, quality to shoot and to dribble and to start with the ball.

“It is a fantastic player and for now it is important he stay with attitude to play forward.”

While Redmond’s forward play against Liverpool was a huge plus for Puel, so too was the defensive performance produced by the entire side.

It was the second time Saints have played Liverpool at home this season, and the Reds, normally so prolific in front of goal, have yet to find the net against them.

If Saints can keep up that record for the return match at Anfield, they will be on their way to Wembley.

“It was two different games,” said Puel of the two goalless meetings between the sides this season.

“The first game in the Premier League against Liverpool was difficult for us with good defensive organisation and strong work without possibilities to keep the ball and to do good action to score.

“I think the difference for the second game good defence but with possibilities to score, with quality on the play, with every ball recovery it was interesting to see a solution and to give a good answer every time without the ball.

“This was very interesting and I think it’s good progress and a strong defence between the first game and the second.

“Now after a very good performance it is just the possibility to see and to have the opportunity to qualify away at Liverpool. Just this.

“I don’t know if 1-0 up will be sufficient but it was interesting for the confidence and all the team.

“It is important to keep this regularity and quality on the play with concentration on the pitch.”

Puel confirmed that the problem that forced off Jordy Clasie was only tightness rather than an injury.

Premier League questions: Who will take Man Utd-Liverpool bragging rights? Another double for Dele Alli?

Show/hide article…

Premier League questions: Who will take Man Utd-Liverpool bragging rights? Another double for Dele Alli?

Who will take the Man Utd v Liverpool bragging rights? Can Dele Alli net another double? We look at the weekend’s Premier League questions.

After a weekend break for FA Cup action, the top flight returns on Saturday with some pulsating fixtures and three games live on Sky Sports.

It all kicks off when Tottenham host West Brom on Premier League Live from 11.30am, before six games kick off at 3pm on Saturday afternoon and then league leaders Chelsea travel to reigning champions Leicester for the evening fixture.

Then it is Merseyside v Manchester on Nissan Super Sunday as Everton host Manchester City at 1.30pm before Manchester United face rivals Liverpool at 4pm.

But who will take those all important points and just how will Hull and Swansea’s new managers fare in their first Premier League fixtures? Read on for the latest round of Premier League questions…

What a season Dele Alli is having. After an impressive maiden campaign with Spurs last term following his move from MK Dons, he has overcome a quiet start to the current campaign to hit top form, scoring in his last four Premier League games.

The last three games have seen him score twice in each and he has already matched his 10 goal haul from last term, as well as becoming the fastest midfielder to reach 20 Premier League goals ahead of Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.

Alli has also scored in two of his last three appearances against West Brom, although six of the last nine top flight meetings between these two sides have ended with the points being shared, including a 1-1 draw in the last three fixtures.

Everyone enjoys their home comforts, and that is certainly true for Burnley this season. They have won 22 of their 23 points this season at Turf Moor with their one away point coming from the 0-0 draw at Manchester United in October.

That haul sees the Clarets have the highest percentage of points won at home (96 per cent) than any other team in the four professional English leagues and has helped Burnley record their best start to a Premier League campaign in their history.

This weekend, they come up against a Southampton side who are on a three-game losing streak in the top flight and another loss on Saturday would equal their worst-ever run in the league where they went four games without a win in December 2014.

A week into the job and new Hull manager Marco Silva will start to get to grips with the real job at the KCOM Stadium - Premier League survival. The Tigers are bottom of the table, three points from safety with a vastly inferior goal difference to 17th-placed Crystal Palace.

But after victory over fellow strugglers Swansea in the FA Cup on Saturday and a defeat to an in-form Manchester United in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg tie, there are positives to take from his first two games in charge.

Bournemouth are suffering a slight blip after crashing out of the FA Cup to Sky Bet League One side Millwall and failing to hold off Arsenal after racing into a 3-0 lead in their last league fixture, so Hull will be hoping for a positive start for their new man on Saturday.

It has been a good couple of weeks for Peter Crouch, scoring in his last two Premier League outings against Chelsea and Watford and extending his contract with Stoke for another year.

He is now just two goals away from a century of Premier League goals and would join the likes of Alan Shearer, Ian Wright and Sky Sports’ own Matt Le Tissier and Thierry Henry in the top flight’s 100 club.

But despite their current occupation of the final relegation spot, Sunderland have lost just one of their last five games and are unbeaten in their last 14 home league games against the Potters.

It was new manager v new manager in Paul Clement’s first game in charge at Swansea against Hull but Silva came out on top with a 2-0 FA Cup win.

But after a full week of training and time to bed in with his new team, former Derby boss Clement will be hoping for signs of improvement from the league’s second bottom side even if they face a tough opponent in fifth-placed Arsenal.

The Gunners have had a habit over the last few weeks of producing a comeback - doing so against Bournemouth and Preston respectively - and have never failed to score on a trip to the Liberty Stadium.

Troy Deeney scored his 100th goal for Watford last month and has a good record of scoring against Middlesbrough, doing so in six of his last eight league games against them. He has only scored more league goals against Leeds (seven).

Watford haven’t lost any of their last six league contests with Boro (W4 D2), last suffering defeat against them in October 2012 while the Teesside club have won only one of their last seven trips to Vicarage Road.

But it’s not all doom and gloom for Aitor Karanka’s men who have continued their defensive solidity from their promotion-winning Championship campaign, with only Spurs (14), Chelsea (15) and Manchester United (19) having conceded fewer goals in the Premier League this season than Boro (22).

It hasn’t been the happiest of returns to management for Sam Allardyce, with his Crystal Palace side yet to win under his leadership with two draws and two losses in all competitions.

Saturday’s game presents the chance for the former England boss to pick up his first win against the club he managed for four years - West Ham. However, neither team boasts a particularly impressive London derby record.

The Hammers only win in a London derby this season came at Selhurst Park in October while Crystal Palace have lost all four of their meetings with fellow teams from the British capital this season.

It was a disappointing evening for Chelsea against fierce rivals Tottenham last week as their 13-game winning run came to end, extinguishing their hopes of a record-breaking 14 victories.

While the Blues got straight back to winning ways in the FA Cup against Peterborough on Sunday, they will face a different task when the league resumes and can open up an eight-point gap over second-place Liverpool ahead of the Super Sunday fixtures.

After a disappointing first half of the season, Leicester are beginning to find a bit of form and pull away from the relegation zone, although they will be without key trio Riyad Mahrez, Islam Slimani and Daniel Amartey who are on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations

It will be a first return to Everton for John Stones since his summer move to Man City and he will be hoping to stop his former side for going four games unbeaten in the Premier League.

The world’s second most expensive defender moved to the Etihad for £47.5m in August after three seasons at Goodison Park with the clubs playing out a 1-1 draw earlier in the season during which City had two penalties saved by Maarten Stekelenburg.

A win on Sunday would mark a turn in fortunes for Everton, who are winless in their last seven Premier League games against City, with Pep Guardiola’s men looking to maintain their push in the top four.

These two fierce rivals will meet for the 50th time in the top flight on Super Sunday this weekend, and both sides are hitting their stride in terms of form to set up a sizzler for their gold anniversary match.

Manchester United are on their longest unbeaten run this decade - going 15 matches without a loss in all competitions and winning the last nine - while Liverpool have not lost in six matches and have only lost twice all season.

Another tantalising thread to this fixture is the potential for Wayne Rooney to break the all-time scoring record for United after matching Sir Bobby Charlton’s record against Reading in the FA Cup last week and to make history against a rival like Liverpool will surely be a huge incentive for the long-serving captain.

Jurgen Klopp hails Liverpool star after Southampton defeat

Show/hide article…

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp heaped praise on Loris Karius after his side’s EFL Cup defeat to Southampton.

The Reds were beaten 1-0 by Claude Puel’s men in the semi-final first leg as Nathan Redmond got the only goal of the game.

It could have been much worse for Liverpool though with Karius making a number of fine saves.

The German had come in for criticism for his performances and recently lost his place to Simon Mignolet.

But Klopp said: “Loris was good, he saved us.

“If we had lost three or four-nil then it would be much more difficult in the second game. He kept us in the game.

“It was his job, I’m not too surprised that he did it.

“But if a goalkeeper has to make saves like this then something else is wrong in the game. That was our problem.”

Karius’ performance ensures Liverpool are still in the tie and Klopp expects a better display from his side in the reverse at Anfield.

“After the goal we conceded the reaction was not good,” he added.

"We lost timing, we were not compact enough, everything changed and that reaction was not good.

“Everything is [still] possible for us so it’s okay. Tonight we were not good enough over the whole 90 minutes but we can do better and nobody should think it’s already decided.”

Liverpool favourite SLAMS striker after poor display

Show/hide article…

Jamie Redknapp has claimed Virgil van Dijk “bullied” Daniel Sturridge in Southampton’s win over Liverpool.

Claude Puel’s men took a 1-0 lead in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg as Nathan Redmond scored the only goal of the game.

Van Dijk turned in a man of the match display as he continues to be linked with a move away from the south coast, keeping Sturridge quiet throughout.

And former Reds skipper Redknapp hailed the Dutchman’s performance - although he was less than impressed with Sturridge.

“He is immense. I say it every time I watch him, he just gets better and better,” Redknapp said.

“You know what it was like tonight, it was like watching a man play against a little boy with Daniel Sturridge.

“He bullied him all game. He never gave him a sniff.”

On the England striker, Redknapp added: "He didn’t move around, he didn’t have enough touches in the box.

“I know, he might be in there thinking, I didn’t get the service. But for great centre forwards, it doesn’t matter, they don’t need service, they make things happen for themselves and he didn’t do enough.”

Daniel Sturridge gives Liverpool shirt to fan following Southampton defeat

Show/hide article…

Liverpool may have lost in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg last night, but one supporter had reason to cheer as he left Saint Mary’s Stadium.

Jurgen Klopp 's side stuttered to a 1-0 defeat after Nathan Redmond neatly finished after 20 minutes.

And Southampton could have arguably have won by more had it not been for a fine string of saves by Loris Karius.

Liverpool looked lacklustre in attack and Daniel Sturridge failed to offer much in the way of a threat.

But despite his poor performance, the England international did make one fan smile at full-time.

As seen in the above footage, Sturridge walks over to the away end inside St Mary’s Stadium and offers his shirt to a young lad.

Needless to say he received a warm reception from Liverpool’s supporters.
