Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: I have no idea why we played so poorly

Show/hide article…

Jürgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager, admitted on Wednesday night that he was at a complete loss to explain his side’s limp performance against Southampton but promised that they would “strike back” in the semi-final second leg.

Southampton will take a one-goal advantage to Anfield but Klopp was certain that their manager, Claude Puel, would also be “disappointed” to only win 1-0 after creating enough chances to end the tie.

Nathan Redmond scored the game’s only goal but admitted that he “should have had four”. Klopp also conceded that Liverpool were rescued by goalkeeper Loris Karius, who had not played against Premier League opposition since the 2-2 draw against West Ham exactly a month earlier.

Asked what he thought of Liverpool’s performance, Klopp said: “I tried already – three, four times now but I cannot make it better with whatever I say. I’m actually not used to a reaction like this from my boys. It was not good. That’s how it is but, for the final, I would think it’s open.

“You have two disappointed managers after the game. One because he lost and the performance wasn’t good and the other because he only won 1-0 and has to go to Anfield afterwards. We will strike back. We will be a different team. Everything will be different at Anfield. It’s still possible to go to Wembley and that’s the target.”

Jurgen Klopp adamant all is still to play for in EFL Cup semi-final with Southampton

Jurgen Klopp adamant all is still to play for in EFL Cup semi-final with Southampton

Jurgen Klopp admitted Liverpool should have performed better against Southampton but insisted all was still to play for in their EFL Cup semi-final.

The Merseysiders, looking to secure a record 13th League Cup final appearance, surrendered a seven-game unbeaten run in all competitions at St. Mary’s as Nathan Redmond handed the Saints a narrow first-leg advantage.

It could have been a lot worse for Klopp’s side had Redmond underscored Saints’ superiority by converting one of three clear-cut chances.

Klopp acknowledged his side’s misgivings but, with the return leg at Anfield still to come, the Liverpool boss insisted the tie was still open.

“We lost timing,” Klopp told Sky Sports. "We weren’t compact enough. We can do much better.

"It was open and open games are difficult. Loris [Karius] had to save us a few times. It’s only half-time so all good.

"We should have been clearer in our passing. Everything is [still] possible for us so it’s okay.

“Tonight we were not good enough over the whole 90 minutes but we can do better and nobody should think it’s already decided.”

Liverpool started the game well but were shell-shocked by Redmond’s 20th-minute opener.

The Reds then had goalkeeper Karius to thank for a string of fine saves to keep a rampant Southampton side from putting the tie to bed.

“After the goal we conceded our reaction was not good,” Klopp added. "We were not compact enough.

“Loris Karius had to save our life. It’s a deserved win for Southampton but it’s only half-time in the tie.”

One positive for Liverpool was Philippe Coutinho’s return to the first team, with the Brazilian making a 30-minute cameo after a seven-week injury lay-off.

His timely comeback comes days before Liverpool’s trip to Manchester United, and Klopp was impressed with the way he seamlessly slotted back into the first-team fold.

“All is good. It is good to have him back,” Klopp said. “You could see immediately in a few moments how important he is to each team in the world, and for us especially, so that was good.”

Redmond: It’ll be a great occasion

Show/hide article…

Redmond, who netted the only goal in a 1-0 win against the Reds at St Mary’s, says Saints still have a lot of work to do if they are to reach Wembley.

But, buoyed by the result on Wednesday night, the England Under-21 international remains confident of doing just that.

“It’s going to be very tough at Anfield. I’m sure there will be a fantastic atmosphere on the night,” said Redmond.

“But we’ve given ourselves a little bit of a lift and a good chance.

“It’ll be a great occasion for the lads, but also for the club and the fans as well.

“We’re looking forward to it, but we know we’ve got a tough job still to do.”

Redmond will also have been lifted by his first goal since October, adding: “It’s been a while since I score. I could have maybe had three or four, but I’m working hard to be more clinical.

“The manager said to me that he’s happy to see me in those positions to score and it will come.

“On another day I could’ve had a hat-trick, but I’m happy to get the goal and the win.”

Puel pleased with clean sheet

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel felt it was important that Southampton kept Liverpool out to record their first clean sheet in six games across all competitions.

The Saints boss says the clean sheet was extra satisfying given its importance to their chances in the EFL Cup semi-final tie, with his side now taking a 1-0 lead to Anfield in a fortnight’s time.

Puel, however, was quick to turn the focus to Saturday’s Premier League game at Burnley, where he wants the defensive resolve to continue.

“It’s good for the confidence and it’s important because we took a lot of goals since Boxing Day,” he said.

“Now it’s important to give back these bad games and you see the performance tonight and it’s important to keep the regularity. It’s a good quality to be efficient, clinical and have this good spirit.”

Saints travel to Burnley on Saturday and then return to St Mary’s for an Emirates FA Cup third round replay next Wednesday, and Puel is looking forward to the prospect of building some momentum at Turf Moor.

“It’s a good game for us,” he said. “I don’t know if this game is sufficient for (fitness) levels but now I think it’s important to keep a good ambition about our game against Burnley, and to provide a good answer.

“You see this performance tonight and it’s important to keep the same attitude against Burnley at that game.”
