Southampton v Liverpool preview: Jose Fonte to be left out, Philippe Coutinho to return

Philippe Coutinho is set to return for Liverpool when they face Southampton in their EFL Cup semi-final first leg at St Mary’s on Wednesday, live on Sky Sports.

The Brazil midfielder only returned to full training on Saturday after suffering an ankle injury against Sunderland in November, but Jurgen Klopp has confirmed his availability.

Southampton, who will be without captain Jose Fonte and injured attacker Sofiane Boufal, have reached the last four of the League Cup for the first time since 1987.

But they have won just twice since the start of December, while Klopp’s Liverpool are on a seven-match unbeaten run stretching back to their 4-3 defeat at Bournemouth.

The Reds boss rested many of his first-team players for their FA Cup draw at home to Plymouth and may shuffle his pack again on Wednesday with Liverpool set to travel to Manchester United on Nissan Super Sunday.

Claude Puel does not intend to include Fonte, who put in a transfer request last week, until after the transfer window closes and Boufal has pulled out of playing in the African Nations Cup due to a knee injury.

Coutinho is set to make his return after nearly seven weeks out with ankle ligament damage but is likely to be on the bench, while Loris Karius should continue in goal following his clean sheet against Plymouth.

Jordan Henderson (heel) will not resume full training until Thursday but centre-back Joel Matip (ankle) could make the squad as he seeks to prove his fitness ahead of Sunday’s trip to United.

This will be the eighth occasion Southampton have faced Liverpool in the EFL Cup; against no side have they played more in the competition (also Arsenal).

Liverpool have eliminated Southampton in four of their last five EFL Cup ties.

Saints have reached this stage of the League Cup for the third time in their history and first time since 1986/87, when they met Liverpool. The only occasion they progressed to the final was in 1978/79, although they eventually lost to Nottingham Forest.

This will be Liverpool’s 17th appearance in the League Cup semi-finals; the most of any side in the competition’s history. They’ve progressed to the final in five of their last six semi-final appearances.

Southampton and Liverpool have kept three clean sheets so far this season; the joint-most in the League Cup alongside Newcastle.

Liverpool have scored more goals than any other side in this season’s League Cup (12); their highest goal tally in the competition since the 2011/12 edition (14).

Daniel Sturridge is this season’s top-scorer in the League Cup (4), netting a brace against Burton in Round 2 and also versus Spurs in Round 4.

Jurgen Klopp has won seven of his nine League Cup games in charge of Liverpool (D1 L1), and has reached the semi-final for the second time in as many seasons.

Saints have won six of their last seven League Cup games against sides from the same division; their only defeat coming against Liverpool in last season’s quarter-final (1-6).

Only Aston Villa (467) have scored more goals in League Cup history than Liverpool (466).

The question about Southampton is are they going to go for it? I could see them sit in, play on the counter-attack and treat it like an away game.

I think they’ve been getting a bit bland under Puel and you do wonder where the goals are going to come from.

I covered the league game when it ended 0-0 and Liverpool should have won three or four nil, so they have no reason to change anything and I expect they’ll get a better outcome.

Klopp seems to be getting twitchy and made too many changes in the FA Cup for me, but I do expect them to win here and, with the form he’s in, I fancy Adam Lallana to come back to haunt Southampton.

Charlie predicts: 1-2 and Lallana to score first - 35/1 with Sky Bet

Everton agree £22million deal for Manchester United midfielder

Show/hide article…

Everton are closing in on the £22million signing of Morgan Schneiderlin from Manchester United.

Everton have been in negotiations with United since before Christmas for Schneiderlin and the clubs have agreed a fee.

United boss Jose Mourinho was adamant Schneiderlin would only leave on United’s terms and Everton have been forced to agree to their valuation after having a £19million offer rejected.

Both sides made a breakthrough in talks this evening and Schneiderlin is due at Finch Farm in the next 48 hours for a medical.

Mourinho confirmed after the 2-0 win over Hull that he expected the Frenchman to depart, declaring: “I have no details, but before the match I was informed by Mr Woodward that the situation is close. Morgan is more than probably going to Everton.”

It is understood the final fee for Schneiderlin could rise to £24million with add-ons, which would be just £1million short of the figure United paid Southampton in July 2015.

Personal terms are not expected to be an issue and the transfer could be finalised before the weekend.

Schneiderlin, 27, knows his United career is over and he will be reunited with his former Southampton boss Ronald Koeman at Goodison Park.

He hopes to relaunch his career under Koeman and the French midfielder has not made a single Premier League start under Mourinho.

Koeman will be delighted to land Schneiderlin after being frustrated by the lack of progress in talks and he has made him one of his top targets in January.

West Brom boss Tony Pulis also wanted Schneiderlin, but the Baggies offer of £18million was rejected by United.

Liverpool fly south for EFL Cup semi-final - and Coutinho was with the squad

Show/hide article…

Liverpool took to the sky on Tuesday night as they flew south for ahead of their EFL Cup semi-final clash with Southampton.

Jurgen Klopp’s side meet the Saints on the south coast on Wednesday night, but interestingly elected to jet off 26 hours before the game.

The Reds trained on Tuesday morning, before players were allowed to return home and then meet up again before departing in the early evening.

And after another morning’s training, Philippe Coutinho was among their number, flying out with Klopp and the squad.

Coutinho hasn’t featured since damaging an ankle during the Premier League clash with Sunderland on November 26, with fears the injury could rule him out for months.

But he returned to light training over the Christmas period, and has now completed four sessions with the first team squad.

Flying out on Tuesday night will allow the players to sleep at their hotel, before undertaking a light session tomorrow - rather than travelling down on Wednesday morning and rushing in an early afternoon activity - before taking on Claude Puel’s side.

Young defender Joe Gomez was included in the travelling party, having made his first start in 15 months in the weekend draw with Plymouth Argyle.

Gomez is only recently back from a serious knee injury, having initially impressed at Anfield, following a £5million move from Charlton in 2015.

Also on board were Trent Alexander-Arnold, the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer Ben Woodburn, and veteran Brazilian Lucas Leiva.

Lucas has admitted he is frustrated sitting on the bench after just three Premier League starts this season.

He is again likely to be on the bench at St Mary’s, with Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan likely to be preferred.

Lucas turned down a move to Inter Milan at the start of the transfer window and feels he is still good enough to play regular first-team football.

“The situation is not great,” he said. "It’s not something I want for my future, to have not many games. But at this moment I have to deal with this and try to find a solution when I have the chance.

“I have to be professional, think about the team and see what’s going to happen.”

Schneiderlin set for Everton move

Show/hide article…

Manchester United have agreed a £22million fee to sell midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin to Everton, Press Association Sport understands.

The 27-year-old moved to Old Trafford from Saints in a deal worth around £25million in July 2015 but has struggled to make an impact since manager Jose Mourinho’s arrival last summer.

Schneiderlin now looks set join former Saints boss Ronald Koeman at Goodison Park, with realistic add-ons understood to have been built in that could take the transfer figure to £24million.

Claude Puel hits back at Southampton’s critics for calling his side boring

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel says his side have put in good performances

Despite leading Saints to their first League Cup semi-final in 30 years against Liverpool tonight, Puel has come under fire from supporters over his negative tactics.

After scoring only 10 Premier League home goals, the club are struggling to sell out tonight’s first leg at St Mary’s.

But Puel insists he has no idea why his side is tagged boring.

“I don’t know the reason,” he said.

“I think since the beginning of the season we have been playing strong games.

“It is difficult to keep up performance levels when you are playing every three days and we know we have to improve and be more clinical.

“We can have a lot of opportunities and it is important to continue this work.”

Rodriguez convinced Southampton will emerge stronger from looming Fonte exit

Show/hide article…

Jay Rodriguez is convinced his Southampton side will emerge stronger after yet more upheaval with skipper Jose Fonte poised to quit the club this month.

Portuguese central defender Fonte is a target for Everton , with Manchester United also interested.

But Rodriguez recalled the summer of 2014, during which boss Mauricio Pochettino left for Spurs and five first-team players - Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Luke Shaw and Calum Chambers - were sold.

Pochettino’s successor Ronald Koeman, who himself left Saints last summer to manage Everton, famously reacted to the exodus by tweeting a picture of a deserted training pitch.

Rodriguez said: “It was a strange time. A lot of players left. The manager left.

"It was a strange time for me and a lot of the players.

“It happens in football – so many players came in and out of team and the main thing was everyone had to stick to the philosophy of ‘We need to improve on last year’.

“You don’t think about too much else. It’s about what we do on the training ground. That’s what we did and we didn’t look back.”

Rodriguez believes Southmpton can still beat Jurgen Klopp’s rampant Liverpool in their EFL Cup semi-final, despite being without captain Fonte for Wednesday night’s first leg at St Mary’s.

He added: “Of course we can. The squad we have is very strong.

“The players we have got mean we have great strength in depth. We will go out there and try to win. We want to put our game on Liverpool

“I think in football things change very quickly. I think lads aren’t naive to think it doesn’t.

"You have to stay focused and realise what you need to do to move forward. It comes from individuals but also collectively.

"If we work hard, we’ll get the right outcomes.”

Jay Rodriguez: Southampton can cope with talent drain and will march on without Jose Fonte

Show/hide article…

It was while Jay Rodriguez was discussing everything from the potential significance of Southampton reaching a first League Cup final in almost four decades to his own comeback from a ruptured knee ligament, that the news emerged.

In the adjacent room, manager Claude Puel had just confirmed that club captain Jose Fonte would be excluded from Southampton’s biggest game of the season. Fonte had made a transfer request and the Sky Sports News yellow ticker was soon in operation. As Rodriguez glanced up at the screen, he could have been forgiven for feeling a sense of deja-vu.

Since being signed by Southampton from Burnley in 2012, two distinct patterns have unfolded. The first is that roll-call of leading first-team departures: Luke Shaw, Rickie Lambert, Calum Chambers, Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana, Morgan Schneiderlin, Nathanial Clyne, Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle, Victor Wanyama and perhaps now Fonte.

Yet the second, equally striking characteristic is how staff really have practically implemented the ‘We March On’ marketing slogan and still delivered annual improvement. Not since 1979 have Southampton reached a major Wembley Cup final and, while the Fonte situation clearly represents a major moment in the season, recent history suggests that the players are unlikely to be distracted.
