What will Jurgen Klopp do against Saints?

Show/hide article…

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was criticised for his selection when the youngest team in the club’s history were held to a goalless draw by Plymouth at the weekend.

Even with Manchester United up next on Sunday he will not employ the same approach, with most of his big names returning, although he may still retain a couple of youngsters against Saints.

Liverpool’s influential playmaker Philippe Coutinho is in desperate need of pitch time after almost seven weeks out with ankle ligament damage if he is to stand a chance of starting at Old Trafford at the weekend. Klopp is keen not to overload the Brazilian too soon, so expect a 20-minute substitute appearance at best.

The summer signing gets another chance to stake his claim to be first choice after a totally inactive game against Plymouth. The German was dropped a month ago after a couple of errors led to growing scrutiny and still has some convincing to do, but a run to a cup final would provide a much-needed confidence boost.

Saints have not won since mid-December, so their manager, with issues to address on the pitch, could have done without captain Jose Fonte handing in a transfer request. The centre-back has been dropped for this match, but Puel will want to avoid a drawn-out row with the defender at such a pivotal time of the season. Continued speculation over the future of Fonte’s defensive partner Virgil van Dijk is also not helping.

A large number of Southampton’s current side were present for their 6-1 mauling at the hands of Liverpool in the quarter-finals of this competition last season, when they were torn apart by Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge. The bad news for them is that Liverpool are playing better this year than last and Southampton’s best chance of progress may well be to keep things tight to ensure they are still in the tie when they go back to Anfield later this month.

Southampton are ready for EFL Cup clash with Liverpool, says Claude Puel

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel believes with a bit of improvement his side will have what it takes to beat Liverpool in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

Saints held the Reds to a goalless draw in the Premier League in November and will be aiming to build on that as they look to gain the advantage in the opening leg of the semi-final at St Mary’s.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have only failed to win eight games out of 25 - six draws and two defeats - in all competitions so far this season, but Puel believes the point they took off the Reds marked one of the club’s best performances so far this season.

“We played Liverpool in the Premier League and it was a strong game for us with organisation,” said the 55-year-old. "We played strong and were strong in defence.

"We played at a good level but it will be important for this game to have more of the ball and try and have control of the game.

"Their ability to control the ball along with good pressing, with technical players, is exciting. We want to exploit them.

“The players are ready for the game. It is an exciting challenge for us. The Premier League game was strong, there are many games in January, different possibilities.”

After an intense run of Premier League fixtures in the festive period, which saw Southampton beaten 3-0 at Goodison Park, the Saints are left 10th in the table.

And Puel admits the EFL Cup has become important for the team in their efforts to win a trophy this season. However, he still insists has not started thinking about the final at Wembley yet.

“The semi-final is important,” the manager added. "It is an excellent challenge and we want to try and make the best of the opportunities.

"The competition is important. This competition is an opportunity for us to win something. We have more chance of winning this than the Premier League.

"We need some good work and we want to keep our good possibilities. The second [leg] away is difficult, it is always difficult.

"It is not possible now to think about the final. We want to go out there and compete our best.

“I think that it is good because all the squad can be involved in the competition and we want to get a strong result for our fans and us.”

Crystal Palace considering move for Southampton’s Jose Fonte - sources

Show/hide article…

Crystal Palace are weighing up a move to bring Southampton defender Jose Fonte back to the club, sources close to the Eagles have told ESPN FC.

Fonte, 33, recently handed in a transfer request after rejecting the offer of a new deal with Saints.

The Portugal defender was left out of last weekend’s FA Cup draw at Norwich and he will again be missing for Wednesday EFL Cup semifinal first leg against Liverpool.

Fonte has been linked with a possible move to Manchester United this month, but Old Trafford boss Jose Mourinho has said he has no plans to sign a new defender in January.

New Palace boss Sam Allardyce is in the market for a new centre-back as he looks to shore up his side’s defence and sources say he has been alerted to Fonte’s situation at Southampton.

Allardyce knows he faces a big job to persuade Fonte to leave Southampton for a relegation battle, but Palace are ready to enter the race for the player, who left Selhurst Park in January 2010 after making 60 appearances for the club.

Fonte still has 18 months left on his current deal and Southampton are holding out a fee in the region of £12 million to sell him this month.

Southampton v Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Southampton will be without captain Jose Fonte for the visit of Liverpool in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

Fonte put in a transfer request last week and Saints boss Claude Puel does not intend to include the defender until after the transfer window closes.

Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho is set to return after nearly seven weeks out with ankle ligament damage.

Captain Jordan Henderson misses out because of a heel injury.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp fielded the youngest Reds line-up in history for Sunday’s FA Cup third-round tie with League Two side Plymouth.

The club’s youngsters struggled to impress as they were held to a goalless draw, and Klopp is expected to include a number of first team players for the trip to St Mary’s.

Klopp says his side’s disappointing FA Cup display does not mean they are under greater pressure to perform against Southampton.

“There is no more pressure on us,” he said. "It is an opportunity. It is always a new day.

“I said to the lads last year it would not be the last final they would be involved in and this is the first chance to prove this.”

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Nothing can be officially decided, but for both teams it is a chance to push themselves to the brink of a final at Wembley Stadium.

The decisive leg will come at Anfield two weeks after this meeting, and each side will hope to head there with an advantage.

For Saints, who have their home leg first, a good start is perhaps even more important than it is for Jürgen Klopp’s men.

While a win would be a wonderful start, anything that includes a clean sheet for Claude Puel’s side could also prove extremely valuable, as away goals come into effect if the tie moves to extra-time after the second leg.

TEAM NEWS

Southampton: Cédric is back to fitness, following the injury he sustained at Everton earlier this month, and could come back into the defence. José Fonte will not be included, however. Cuco Martina missed Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Norwich through illness, but is available again. Sofiane Boufal is out with a knee injury, but would have been on Africa Cup of Nations duty anyway had he been fit, while the likes of Charlie Austin, Matt Targett, Jérémy Pied and Alex McCarthy remain longer-term absentees.

Liverpool: Philippe Coutinho is back in contention after nearly two months out with injury, and is set to be part of the squad. James Milner is also available after a calf injury. Sadio Mané is away on Africa Cup of Nations duty, while captain Jordan Henderson and defender Joel Matip are close to returning, but are not set to be included in the squad for the first leg. Loris Karius is also expected to start in goal.

Like Southampton, Liverpool will be without their top scorer, Sadio Mané, however they still have plenty of firepower, with Divock Origi and Roberto Firmino in excellent form in front of goal this season. Ex-Saint Adam Lallana has been the Reds’ most creative player, while Philippe Coutinho – who is returning to fitness – has also been typically dangerous.

Top scorers: Sadio Mané (10), Divock Origi (9), Roberto Firmino (8)

GOSSIP: Liverpool set Sakho asking price

Show/hide article…

SAINTS must cough up £20m if they are to capture defender Mamadou Sakho, according to the BBC.

Phil McNulty, the BBC’s chief football writer, reports that Liverpool have set the £20m asking price for his services in the January transfer window.

Rumours have filtered out in recent days that Sakho could well be a target for Saints if Jose Fonte was to leave St Mary’s this month.

The BBC report adds that Galasaray and Sevilla have also “shown an interest” in the 26-year-old, who hasn’t played for the Reds since April due to off-field problems.

The French international may well be on Saints’ radar if Fonte were to depart, although the asking price would be pose a big obstacle.

Saints’ executive director of football Les Reed stated to the Daily Echo that they would not let Fonte leave unless a replacement had been organised.

“He certainly won’t leave on the basis that he can just go,” he said. "We would not consider releasing him unless there was a decent transfer fee and secondly that we were in a position to replace him.

"If anybody comes along on the last day of the transfer window it’s not going to happen.’

Manchester rivals United and City are reportedly lining up a double swoop for Tottenham full-backs Kyle Walker and Danny Rose.

The Red Devils and Citizens are both in need of defensive reinforcements and are hoping around £60m will be enough to bring the Spurs pair to the north of England.

Mauricio Pochettino will be keen to fend off interest in his players as he looks to bring silverware to the north London club – and Walker and Rose are vital to that.

The England internationals are now among the best full-backs in the world and work well as a partnership for Tottenham, both defensively and offensively.

Opposition View: Klopp on Saints clash

Show/hide article…

The Reds visit Southampton tomorrow night, as both sides begin the fight to reach a Wembley final.

"It would be nice if we could go to the final,” said Klopp. "Are we favourites against Southampton? Whoever says this has not a real idea about cup competitions.

“If this was the case, then in the last few years the finals all over the world always would have been the same teams involved.

"I don’t think Sevilla-Liverpool last year was the expected final. Everybody expected Sevilla in the final but not us, but we were there and I think we deserved it.

“There is not more pressure on us [than Southampton], it’s an opportunity for both teams. I don’t think about missed chances or whatever. It’s always a new day, always a new chance, always a new final."

Klopp also explained that there might not be a huge advantage for Liverpool having their home leg second.

“It depends on the result of the first game,” he said. "It should, but we don’t have a lot of advantages in two-leg cup competitions.

“If you asked before [the draw], I would say that nearly everybody would say ‘let us play first away and then try to make the decision in the home game’. It’s not a decisive advantage if we don’t perform, that’s how it is.

“We can’t think about the second game in this moment because now we have to go to Southampton, it’s the first leg and I am pretty sure they’re pretty ambitious in this tournament."

Jose Fonte, Memphis Depay and Saido Berahino’s January transfer odds assessed

Show/hide article…

We look at which Premier League players are expected to be on the move this month according to Sky Bet’s transfer odds.

Big deals have been at a minimum so far, but Sky Bet’s markets imply there is business to be done before the transfer window closes at 11pm on January 31.

While the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Wanye Rooney and Virgil van Dijk are long odds to complete speculated moves, here are six players odds-against to still be at their current clubs come February…

Southampton fans are familiar with losing their best players, but one man they might have expected to remain loyal was their captain, who has led them to the Premier League from the third tier. However, 33-year-old Fonte seems to have his heart set on leaving St Mary’s in January, having submitted a transfer request last week.

Suggestions that his days on the south coast are numbered were supported by his absence from Claude Puel’s squads for their FA Cup and EFL Cup ties. Having signed no less than five of Southampton’s star players since 2014, Liverpool were understandably installed as the favourites to secure his services, but it is former club Crystal Palace who have now emerged at the head of the betting at 2/1.

As if Marco Silva’s job was not difficult enough at Hull, he faces the added challenge of retaining the player who is almost single-handedly keeping their survival hopes alive. Boasting seven goals and two assists in the league this season, the Scot has been involved in more than half of Hull’s goals, with defender Michael Dawson their second highest scorer.

West Ham (11/4) offered £3m for Snodgrass’ services last week, which was rejected by Hull. Last month, the Tigers took up the option to extend the 29-year-old’s contract to 2018, but it is Middlesbrough (5/4) who are deemed the most likely side to make a reasonable offer in January.

Jose Mourinho appears to be working out who he does and doesn’t need at Old Trafford, and Depay is one of those seemingly surplus to requirements, but only on a permanent deal. The 22-year-old, who arrived from PSV for £25m in June 2015, has played just 20 minutes of Premier League football this season and was not even included in the squad for their FA Cup clash with Reading despite a haul of changes.

With Yannick Bolasie sidelined for the rest of the season, punters are backing Everton (10/11) to move for the Dutchman, while Nice (9/4) appear to be their main rivals for his services.

West Brom boss Tony Pulis revealed last week that Berahino is refusing to sign a new deal with the club, but the question for now is whether he departs in the current transfer window. The odds suggest so, with staying at the Hawthorns a 5/1 chance, although the bookies have got it wrong a fair few times before with the 23-year-old’s future.

Stoke (1/3) are the current favourites to secure his services, and Sky sources have told us they have made a formal bid. West Ham (15/2) are considered the most likely alternative, while Rangers seem to have emerged as unlikely suitors at 18/1.

Rhodes has found playing time limited at Middlesbrough this season, starting just twice and making four more substitute appearances, with Alvaro Negredo favoured up front. The arrival of Rudy Gestede has added to the feeling that Rhodes is no longer part on Aitor Karanka’s plans, with the odds on him still being at the Riverside come February lengthening.

However, an obvious suitor is yet to emerge, with the favourites currently Sheffield Wednesday (2/1), where his father Andy is currently employed as goalkeeping coach.

The former England international may have enjoyed more playing time this season but an exit is considered even more likely, with his odds on remaining currently 13/2. The winger has made seven successive substitute appearances after being a regular starter and is being well backed to reunite with Sam Allardyce at Crystal Palace.

The Eagles, who are also reportedly chasing Leicester’s Jeffrey Schlupp, are just 2/7 to secure his services, with former club Aston Villa deemed the most likely alternative at 11/1.
