Afcon 2017: Sofiane Boufal of Southampton misses out for Morocco

Show/hide article…

Southampton midfielder Sofiane Boufal has withdrawn from Morocco’s Africa Cup of Nations squad with an injury.

The 23-year-old was sent home on Sunday from a training camp, although details of the injury have not been released.

“Boufal has left after examination of his injury showed he would not be capable of playing,” the national team said in a statement.

Morocco have already lost midfielders Younes Belhanda, Oussame Tannane and Watford’s Nordin Amrabat to injuries.

They play Finland in a friendly on Tuesday before heading to the tournament in Gabon where their first match is against the Democratic Republic of Congo in Oyem on 16 January.

A replacement for Boufal has not yet been named.

Premier League transfer news and rumours: Ivan Rakitic linked with Man City move after being left out of Barcelona squad

Show/hide article…

The main piece of transfer gossip this morning comes from Barcelona where midfielder Ivan Rakitic is being linked with a move to Manchester City.

The highly-rated Croatian playmaker was left out of the Barca matchday squad for the trip to Villarreal, prompting rumours that he is set to leave the club and join City.

The Star for instance claims that Pep Guardiola is eyeing up a move for Rakitic, a midfielder with a playing style not dissimilar from his own, and that the Croat could be Etihad-bound for around £42 million.

And Croatian newspaper Jutarnji List claims Rakitic is Guardiola’s “preferred choice” to replace the long-term injury absentee Ilkay Gundogan.

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique however moved to play down the chances of Rakitic leaving, and said after his side’s 1-1 draw at Villarreal “information which comes out in the media is not even 25 percent reliable.”

Expected Liverpool XI: Klopp to make major changes to 4-3-3 for semi-final at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Liverpool (Odds: 7/5 to win, 5/2 to draw, 11/5 to lose)

LIVERPOOL take on Southampton in the EFL Cup semi-finals on Wednesday, but who will start?

Jurgen Klopp’s men go into the first leg of the tie at St Mary’s off the back of an embarrassing 0-0 draw at home to League Two minnows Plymouth.

We’re expecting the German to make as many as 10 changes from the side that failed to make the breakthrough at Anfield on Sunday.

The 13 players who shunned punditry and management for surprise jobs after retiring

Show/hide article…

THERE are plenty of footballers who don’t go into coaching or punditry after retiring, so what happens to them?

While we are used to seeing the likes of Jamie Redknapp and Alan Shearer on our television screens each weekend, and former stars like Jaap Stam and Zinedine Zidane in the dugout, not all remain in the public eye.

Our research combined with that of the Daily Mail has shown some footballers who have moved onto some fascinating and bizarre careers since hanging up their boots.

Ronald Koeman is a winner - Southampton didn’t match his aspirations

Show/hide article…

“Why on earth would Ronald Koeman leave Southampton for Everton?”

It was a question mooted in the summer, and it’s an answer that is becoming clearer as the season unfolds.

Maybe not in the short term, with an Everton team that needs investment and restructuring, but he was always going to be on the look out for a club with aspirations and aims that match his own.

This week will define their season. They face Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi finals at home.

You might expect for Jurgen Klopp to be a bit apprehensive. Liverpool have just fudged a cup tie, and Mane is on international duty. You might expect a rousing atmosphere in that first leg. It’s a semi final and Wembley is the prize!

You might have got it as well. If it was at the Dell.

Not at St Mary’s. Southampton have already shown that twice this season in the Europa League.

I was astonished by the quietness of the occasion against Inter Milan. It’s Inter Milan! Three European Cups, 18 Series A titles, the team of Zanetti, Figo, Vieri, Bergomi and Ibrahimovic.

It was the same against Hapoel Be’er Sheva. Southampton had a chance to qualify and they were tactically outmanoeuvred by the Israeli Champions. It was a game of chess, played in an atmosphere to match.

From the botched PA that couldn’t whip up a bowl of cream, to the ridiculous team selections that put Claude Puel and his side in a position where it went to the last game. It was a mess and it was a wasted opportunity.

Saints fans won’t like me saying it, but when Portsmouth played AC Milan in the same competition, everyone knew about it. I doubt anyone knows how dramatic Southampton’s exit was.

Southampton are a “good” club. They develop a regular amount of exciting, British youngsters and they play possession based football.

It’s not like the days of Le Tissier, Benali and Mark Dennis though. There was devilry and magic then. Whenever I go at Southampton now it feels like a place where everyone wants to be somewhere else.

The owner wants to sell. The manager’s never last long. The captain wants to leave. The best central defender is happy to whack on a Manchester City shirt. For every true supporter in the crowd, there appears to be someone else they have dragged along who spends most of the night on Instagram.

I think it’s incredible a club of that size has already thrown away the gift of European football this season, and no one seemed to care.

Is this what is acceptable there? Will it be ok just that Southampton have reached a semi final of a domestic trophy rather than achieve something they have only ever managed once in their history, and win one?

Will it feel like another successful season, if they just about qualify for Europe or not, but have wads in the bank from the sale of Virgil Van Dijk ? Surely the fans can’t be having that.

Its easy, when the praise for developing a battery of talent is flowing, and the money from yet another big money transfer is rolling in, to forget what your primary job is.

It’s to win football matches and trophies, and break new ground. It’s about ambition, and Southampton don’t have ambition, and they don’t win trophies.

They have to change that, and this is their chance. Otherwise, everyone else, just like Ronald Koeman, will give up and leave.

Boufal withdraws from Morocco squad

Show/hide article…

SOFIANE Boufal has pulled out of Morocco’s African Cup of Nations squad, according the Moroccan Football Federation.

Boufal left for the tournament in Gabon last week after Saints’ 3-0 defeat at Everton.

However, the club’s £16m record signing will play no part in the competition because of injury.

“Sofiane Boufal has left the camp after examination of his injury showed he would not be capable of playing at the Nations Cup,” the statement read.

Saints are yet to comment on the full extent of Boufal’s injury.
