Liverpool v Southampton preview: Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho in line for starts

Show/hide article…

Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho are both in line for starting spots as Liverpool host Southampton on Nissan Super Sunday.

The England midfielder made his return to action against Watford on Monday after five weeks on the sidelines, replacing the Brazilian playmaker who suffered a dead leg.

But with the latter expected to overcome his injury, the duo could start at Anfield as Jurgen Klopp looks for his first win against the Saints in the Premier League.

Southampton - who still have five games of the season to play - have already beaten Liverpool this season in the EFL Cup semi-finals, winning 2-0 on a two-legged aggregate in January.

The Saints have also shut the Reds out in all three games they have played against them this season, including the reverse league fixture in November.

Although Lallana and Coutinho are in line for starts, Daniel Sturridge’s fitness continues to be managed and he is likely to only be on the Liverpool bench again.

Sadio Mane (knee) and Jordan Henderson (foot) continue to be sidelined for the Reds, along with long-term absentee Danny Ings.

Charlie Austin could make a long-awaited Southampton return on Sunday, having been sidelined since dislocating his shoulder in the Saints’ 1-1 Europa League home draw with Hapoel Be’er Sheva on December 8.

Jurgen Klopp hasn’t won any of his three previous Premier League games against Southampton (D2 L1). Liverpool had won their previous three v Saints prior to his arrival.

Southampton have won just one of their last five visits to Anfield in the Premier League (D1 L3), 1-0 in September 2013 with a goal from current Liverpool player Dejan Lovren.

Klopp now has an identical record to Brendan Rodgers in his first 65 Premier League games in charge of Liverpool: W33 D18 L14, winning 117 points.

Since Klopp first took charge of Liverpool in October 2015, there have been 208 goals scored in Premier League games involving the Reds - more than any other side.

Daniel Sturridge has played just 1316 minutes of Premier League football since Jurgen Klopp took over as Liverpool manager - just 22% of the possible minutes during this time and less than 17 other Liverpool players.

Even if Southampton win their remaining five Premier League matches this season, they’ll still fall under their league points tally in 2015-16 (63) and 2014-15 (60) and would only be able to equal their tally in 2013-14 (56).

Manolo Gabbiadini scored four goals in his first three Premier League appearances (248 mins), but since then he’s failed to score and attempted just one shot on target in 237 Premier League minutes (four apps).

Seven of Southampton’s 11 Premier League wins in 2016-17 have come on a Sunday. In fact, only Manchester United (8) and Tottenham (8) have won more games played on a Sunday in the Premier League this season than Claude Puel’s side.

The race for the top four is back in Liverpool’s hands and that’s all you can ask for at this stage of the season. I expect them to win this game easily.

Southampton are another team that are on holiday so I’m expecting a comfortable afternoon for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Yoshida: I appreciate everyone I work with

Show/hide article…

The 28-year-old, who has recently become a father for the first time, also revealed how that extra responsibility has helped him on the pitch.

“I am very happy to get this prize and really appreciate everyone I work with a this club,” started Yoshida.

“I am really enjoying my life as both a player and a dad at the moment here at Southampton.

“Having my daughter is the best thing that has happened to me in my life. She has brought many good things into my life since she was born.”

Yoshida also took time to reflect upon his recent personal milestone of reaching his 100th Premier League appearance against Hull City.

And as the first Japanese player to reach that number, he celebrated by inviting 100 people to watch the match at St Mary’s.

“It’s just 100 games and nothing special for English people, but it is a huge step for my country,” he continued.

“I invited 100 Japanese fans to come and watch the last game to mark my 100th appearance, including 50 young children.

“I hope they were inspired by the atmosphere and what they saw, and in the future they can go on to beat my record.”

Liverpool vs Southampton: Team news, odds and stats

Show/hide article…

Ahead of this weekend’s Premier League action, Sportsmail will be providing you with all you need to know about every fixture, with team news, provisional squads, betting odds and Opta stats.

Here is all the information you need for Liverpool’s must-win game clash with Southampton at Anfield.

Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho looks set to recover from a dead leg to start against Southampton on Sunday.

Midfielder Adam Lallana could be in line to start after playing 74 minutes at Watford, his first action in five weeks after a thigh injury.

Striker Daniel Sturridge’s fitness continues to be managed and he is likely to only be on the bench again.

Charlie Austin could make a long-awaited Southampton return in Sunday’s Premier League clash at Liverpool.

The former QPR striker has been sidelined since dislocating his shoulder in Southampton’s 1-1 Europa League home draw with Hapoel Be’er Sheva on December 8.

But now the 27-year-old could yet be ready to make the Saints squad for the weekend trip to Anfield.

Liverpool are yet to score against Southampton in three games this season - drawing 0-0 in the Premier League in November and losing both League Cup semi-final legs 1-0.

Jurgen Klopp now has an identical record to Brendan Rodgers in his first 65 Premier League games in charge of Liverpool: W33 D18 L14, winning 117 points.

Divock Origi has appeared in 40 different competitive games for Liverpool so far in 2016-17; more than any other player in the squad. Over half of these (21) have come as a substitute, however.

Manolo Gabbiadini scored four goals in his first three Premier League appearances (248 mins), but since then he’s failed to score and attempted just one shot on target in 237 Premier League minutes (four apps).

Fleming: Swansea play a similar style

Show/hide article…

The Saints youngsters previously beat the Swans 2-0 at home and drew 1-1 away, and Fleming is anticipating another entertaining encounter.

“Both games home and away we did well against them,” he started.

“Away we weren’t very clinical and drew the game, but at home it was a professional performance and we dominated from start to finish.

“It’s two pretty evenly matched teams who also play similar styles of football, so it should be a pretty good game.”

Fleming will be without 17-year-old Jake Vokins on Saturday, as the left-back is away at the European Championships with England Under-17s.

That international duty also meant Vokins was absent at the Player Awards evening earlier in the week where he was named Scholar of the Season.

“I am very proud of him,” continued Fleming.

“He’s done ever so well. Last December we had a bit of a crisis at left-back and Matt Hale recommended we try Jake who was with the Under-16s as a left winger.

“We went with it and he was outstanding. Within weeks he was with the Under-23s, then gets his pro deal and now is with the England squad. He’s done tremendously well to grasp his chance.”

Liverpool FC team news: Predicted XI to face Southampton at Anfield - Philippe Coutinho to start despite injury scare?

Show/hide article…

Philippe Coutinho looks set to recover from a dead leg to start Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Southampton on Sunday.

The Brazilian playmaker limped off with injury just 13 minutes into their win over Watford, but manager Jurgen Klopp has given positive indications about his chances of featuring this weekend.

Coutinho was replaced by Adam Lallana, who played 74 minutes on his return from a five-week lay-off, and the England midfielder could be in line to start their penultimate game at Anfield this season.

Captain Jordan Henderson is out, while striker Daniel Sturridge’s fitness continues to be managed and he is likely to only be on the bench again. Danny Ings is not ready to return from a long-term knee injury but Klopp provided a positive update by revealing the former Burnley striker is ‘training for the first time with the ball’.

A win would keep the Reds in third as they hope to secure a top-four finish and their place in next season’s Champions League.

Who will Klopp select for the clash on Merseyside?
