West Ham and Southampton on alert as Ranieri wants next job to be in England

Show/hide article…

Claudio Ranieri will wait for a job in the Premier League before returning to football next season.

French side Nice are keen on the Italian, who has not worked since his shock sacking by Leicester in February.

But Ranieri, crowned the FIFA Coach of the Year in January after the Foxes’ 5,000-1 title triumph, wants his next job to be back in England.

And the 65-year-old, who also led Chelsea for four seasons, is prepared to see what offers he receives in the summer before making a decision, with Southampton — ironically currently managed by last season’s Nice boss Claude Puel — and West Ham weighing up managerial changes.

Nice are lining up a replacement for Puel’s successor Lucien Favre, with the Swiss set to take over from in-demand Thomas Tuchel at German heavyweights Borussia Dortmund next season.

Celta Vigo coach Eduardo Berizzo, whose side visit Manchester United in a Europa League semi-final second leg on Thursday, is also on Nice’s shortlist.

With ex-Manchester City and Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli up front, they led Ligue 1 earlier in the season and will enter the Champions League in the final round of qualifying in August after already guaranteeing themselves a third place finish.

Ranieri, who also previously coached Nice’s neighbours Monaco, still has a house in Monte Carlo – half an hour’s drive away along the Cote d’Azur.

Southampton star Virgil van Dijk is wanted by Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea

Starsport understands Liverpool are confident of signing the Saints defender in a stunning £50m summer swoop.

Kop boss Jurgen Klopp has put Van Dijk at the top of his shopping list but faces competition from Manchester City and Chelsea.

Black has now suggested that his club may be powerless to keep hold of the in-demand Dutchman.

He told talkSport: "We’d love to see Virgil stay. He’s obviously the one everyone has been talking about [leaving].

Southampton 0-2 Arsenal: Gunners keep top four hopes alive

Show/hide article…

Almost an hour had drifted by with little to suggest Arsenal were serious about this late assault on the top-four when suddenly their two biggest stars came to life.

Mesut Ozil, flimsy and peripheral until this point, eased to his left on the edge of the box and opened his body in order to thread a first-time pass towards Alexis Sanchez as he exploded into the penalty box.

It was a fabulous example of Ozil’s supreme vision, touch and appreciation of others around him.

Sanchez gathered the pass on the turn, shaped to shoot and chopped the ball from right foot to left, sending centre halves Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens sliding across his field of vision in a blur of red and white.

With only Fraser Forster to beat, Arsenal’s Chilean striker rammed a shot low past the feet of the Southampton goalkeeper.

In doing so he became the first Arsenal player to reach 20 goals in a Premier League season since Robin van Persie in 2011-12. Van Persie’s goals fired Arsene Wenger’s team into the Champions League that year and Sanchez may yet do the same.

Like Ozil, little had gone right for him, with his listlessness best illustrated by a woeful foul throw in the first half. When it mattered, however, Ozil and Sanchez combined for a goal to ease the pressure which seemed to have stifled the Londoners.

Olivier Giroud came off the bench to score the second and victory lifts them into fifth, above Manchester United.

Arsenal were far from fluent, unable to summon any real urgency and anxious in possession. But they are fighting at least, and won in the league at Southampton for the first time since December 2003, the Invincibles campaign.

They have left it late but there is a sliver of hope as they attempt to qualify for the Champions League for a 20th successive year. Wenger has a perfect record of qualification and insists he has never written off the idea of making the top four.

In the past, he has seen his team scramble over the line on the last day, often at the expense of Tottenham. This year, Liverpool and Manchester City will be checking anxiously over their shoulders.

With a trip to Stoke on Saturday and home games to follow against Sunderland and Everton, Wenger’s side will target three more wins and hope someone stumbles. They have won four of five games since last month’s dismal defeat at Crystal Palace which prompted the manager to switch to a back three.

Although they look far from watertight, the change has certainly made them more solid at the back. This was a second clean sheet in four days after shutting out Manchester United on Sunday.

Arsenal arrived here without the reassuring presence of their captain Laurent Koscielny and lost wing back Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to a tweaked hamstring muscle before half-time.

Chamberlain will face a fight to be fit for the FA Cup final. The injury is a blow for Wenger but more so for the 23-year-old England international who has been craving a run of games in the team. Whenever the chance seems to beckon he is so often struck down by an injury.

Saints were the better team in the first half with Manolo Gabbiadini a threat in front of goal. The Italian was denied by Petr Cech and swerved a free-kick narrowly wide. Cech turned over a fierce drive from 25 yards by Nathan Redmond and Arsenal did not create a clear opportunity until the final seconds of the first half.

Hector Bellerin, on for Oxlade-Chamberlain, delivered a fabulous cross from the right, Danny Welbeck climbed to meet it but his tame header glanced across goal and out to safety.

Wenger’s team were slow to get into their stride again after the break. Mistakes littered their passing game. Too often the final ball went astray. Southampton also struggled in the second half.

Claude Puel’s team have not mustered a goal in the last three games and are without a win in more than a month.

‘We cannot find a clinical edge,’ said Puel. ‘It’s a big disappointment and a big frustration. After another good performance these players are not finding their reward.’

Though safe in mid-table with 42 points they could easily slide if their season fizzles out.

Arsenal seized control when Sanchez struck on the hour, played with greater freedom and closed out the game with Giroud’s goal, seven minutes from time.

A deep cross from Sanchez was headed back across goal by Aaron Ramsey and the substitute arrived to convert with a header from close range.

It added a gloss the game did not really deserve but that will not trouble Wenger.

Southampton’s missed chances frustrate Claude Puel in Arsenal defeat

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel said he was “frustrated” at Southampton’s failure to take their chances as they were beaten 2-0 by Arsenal on Wednesday.

Saints are the second-lowest scorers at home in the Premier League this season with just 17 goals.

And it was another frustrating night at St Mary’s as several opportunities were spurned before Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud scored for the Gunners.

“To play at this level against a good team and to have all these chances and positions to score is good, but it’s important to find the clinical edge,” Puel told Sky Sports.

“If we cannot score then we cannot win a game. Against the top six it’s often the way. We can play a good game, with chances, but it’s a shame and harsh for the players because it was good spirit and good work without reward.”

Having scored six goals in his first four appearances for Southampton after joining in January, Manolo Gabbiadini has now gone six games without scoring.

The striker looked out of sorts and failed to make the most of the chances that did come his way.

“It’s a young team and I hope we can improve to find the clinical edge because it’s important to validate the good work and chances with good results,” added Puel.

“Many games since the start of the season have seen good performances without reward. Sometimes it is difficult to accept.”

Southampton vs Arsenal player ratings: Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey inspire

Show/hide article…

Alexis Sanchez hit his 20th Premier League goal of the season as Arsenal saw off Southampton to keep their Premier League top-four hopes alive.

The Gunners secured a vital 2-0 win in this game in hand to leapfrog Manchester United into fifth and now sit three points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester City.

Sanchez struck the opener on the hour mark at St Mary’s before Olivier Giroud came off the bench to make sure of the points with a close-range header.

Under-fire Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has constantly reiterated his side cannot put a foot wrong in their remaining games, and they were solid enough to take home victory from the south coast to keep them in the hunt for Champions League qualification.

Arsenal went into this match needing a win but also having to address woeful away form that had seen them take two points from a possible 24 on the road against current top-half teams.

They were not at their best here but in truth they did not need to be - this was nothing like the 4-0 thrashing they dished out in the corresponding fixture last term.

Southampton appear to be coasting to the season’s end, with reported pressure on manager Claude Puel likely to ramp up after another lacklustre display.

Southampton 0-2 Arsenal: Saints gunned down

Show/hide article…

Saints failed to score for a third successive game at St Mary’s as Alexis Sanchez hit his 20th Premier League goal of the season as Arsenal kept their Premier League top-four hopes alive.

The Gunners secured a vital 2-0 win in this game in hand to leapfrog Manchester United into fifth and now sit three points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester City.

But it was a third game at St Mary’s - and three in total in the Premier League - without scoring for Claude Puel’s men.

Saints had their moments but looked short of ideas in attack, where out-of-sorts forward Manolo Gabbiadini again drew a blank.

The game started with nothing of the tempo and chances from Sunday’s opening exchanges from Arsenal’s weekend win over Manchester United.

But it was the visitors who had the first real chance as Aaron Ramsey sent an effort wide of goal following good work from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The former Saints youngster was enjoying a bright spell down the right but there were no further opportunities of note in the opening half-hour.

That was until the Arsenal three-man defence conspired to play both Dusan Tadic and Gabbiadini onside, with the latter seeing an effort well saved by Petr Cech.

Wenger was forced into a change as the impressive Oxlade-Chamberlain went off with what appeared to be a hamstring issue - Hector Bellerin on in his place.

Gabbiadini then sent a contentious free-kick wide of Cech’s goal before Arsenal’s skipper for the night had to be at this best to tip a Nathan Redmond drive over the bar.

Both teams started the second half looking to get on the front foot but it took until the hour for Sanchez to open the scoring for Arsenal.

The Chile forward picked up a pass inside the box from Mesut Ozil and left both Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens on the ground as he cut back inside and finished well.

The second came in the closing stages as substitute Giroud made certain of the points, heading home Ramsey’s nod back across the box after more good work from Sanchez.

It was a professional display from there on in from Arsenal, who recorded a first league win at Southampton since their unbeaten title-winning season of 2003/04.

This victory may not mean as much as it did during the ‘Invincibles’ campaign, but it could have long-lasting ramifications for both Wenger and Arsenal as the Frenchman continues to contemplate whether to sign a new deal.

Stephens: We have to put these games to bed

Show/hide article…

Despite a promising first-half display against Arsenal, second-half strikes from Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud earned the visitors a 2-0 win at St Mary’s.

“I think especially in the first half we played really well,” started Stephens.

“We created some good opportunities. Then in the second half we came out and looked the better side for the first ten or 15 minutes.

“But unfortunately we then conceded and that makes it a lot more difficult for us to get back into the game. Obviously we are very disappointed with that.”

Despite suffering defeat to the Gunners, Stephens admitted there were some positives to take from the game.

“I think we more than matched a good Arsenal side for the majority of the game,” he continued.

“So we can take a lot of credit from that, but there has got to be a time when we start to put these games to bed.

“I think we had some good opportunities and we limited them to very few clear-cut chances but we have to be able to make the most of that.”

Southampton 0-2 Arsenal - are you in our fan pictures?

Saints played well for a large chunk of this game, but were undone in the end and suffered their first Premier League home defeat to Arsenal since 2003/04.

Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring on the hour mark, turning inside the box and hitting home.

The Gunners were comfortable after that and doubled their lead on 83 minutes as Sanchez found Aaron Ramsey at the back post, who nodded it on to Giroud to head in from close range.

Saints now winless in five games – their worst run of the season.

On top of that, their home struggles continue and Claude Puel looks more and more under pressure.

Southampton 0-2 Arsenal: Puel calls for “clinical edge”

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has urged his side to find their “clinical edge” in the final three games of the season after Saints drew yet another blank at St Mary’s.

The 2-0 defeat to Arsenal made it three games without a goal on the trot for Saints, and three in a row at St Mary’s as well.

Saints have scored just 17 times in front of their own fans in 17 top flight games this season, with only relegated duo Sunderland and Middlesbrough having a poorer record.

Puel was pleased with his side’s performance against Arsenal, but again the goals did not arrive.

He said: “We cannot find the good clinical edge but every time it was interesting on the play.

“Against Hull City it was not enough and all the games the same thing. We saw our game since the beginning of the season and lot of games, many games, where we had the same feeling. There are opportunities and chances without finding the good clinical edge.

“It is important to continue this work and have the good reward and to keep going about this good attitude, this good work, and of course with the game it is important to put the ball in the goal.”

Saints started brightly against Arsenal, but once more there was a lack of cutting edge.

Petr Cech was forced into two decent first half saves, but was not particularly worked in the second period as the Gunners took control of the game.

Puel felt that Saints were good value to get something from the game, but it was a case of the same old story as they left empty handed.

“It’s a very good performance on the pitch but the quality after is not enough to find the good clinical edge,” he admitted.

“We had a lot of opportunities in the first half and sometimes in the second half also.

“It was a big disappointment and frustration also after a good performance without a good clinical edge and a good reward about this play.

“It is difficult to accept this after this game and this loss because we do better and it is difficult for us to find this good clinical edge and to have the good reward.

“On the spirit and to defend together, the organisation and some moments with quality was very interesting and after three days after the away game against Liverpool it was a big game with a lot of defending.

“It was very interesting to see my players at this level, intensity and quality on the pitch but of course it is not enough because they find the good solution with the opportunity with Sanchez which made the difference. A great player and for us good without a clinical edge.”

Puel reacts to Arsenal defeat

Show/hide article…

Saints produced a positive first-half display but we were punished by the visitors with goals from Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud after the interval.

“It’s a big disappointment. We had many opportunities to score without finding a clinical edge,” Puel reflected.

“It’s difficult to accept after this game but we know we have to find the clinical edge.

“It was very interesting three days after the game against Liverpool to see my team at this level. They did fantastic work to prevent Arsenal playing and defended together.

“We had a lot of situations to score but if we can’t do this, obviously we took a goal because Arsenal found a solution and made the difference.

“This is often the same against the top six and we need to improve to get reward from these games.”
