Arsenal have four games to salvage Champions League football

Show/hide article…

Arsenal’s battle to maintain their long-standing record of finishing in the top four of the Premier League resumes on Wednesday against Southampton.

The Gunners last finished lower than fourth in 1995-96 but for all the stability Arsene Wenger has brought to the club as manager, this season has largely been a tumultuous one.

But after delivering a major blow to Manchester United’s top-four hopes with an impressive 2-0 win on Sunday, Arsenal have four games left to crowbar their way into Champions League qualifying places. They are currently sixth on 63 points.

It is not entirely in Arsenal’s hands; they need Manchester City or Liverpool to drop points somewhere in their run-in in order to dislodge them, while United can still make it despite prioritising the Europa League.

A trip to St Mary’s is never straightforward and Arsenal know that more than most after being thumped 4-0 there last season.

At home, Claude Puel’s side are unlikely to be as defensive as they were in holding Liverpool to a 0-0 draw at Anfield on Sunday. Yet for all the attacking merits the likes of Nathan Redmond and Manolo Gabbiadini posses, Saints are only playing for an eighth-place finish now.

Coming off the back of the win over United, it should be another Arsenal victory.

Arsenal have not won at Stoke since February 2010 and that run of form needs to be snapped if they are to make the Champions League again.

Stoke are 13th but are only four points behind eighth-placed West Brom and it promises to be a rowdy atmosphere for Saturday’s late kick-off.

It could be as stern a test as Arsenal will face between now and the end of the season.

This fixture should be as straightforward as it gets for Wenger’s side. The Black Cats are already relegated so Arsenal will be overwhelming favourites to record victory.

It provides an opportunity not only for three crucial points but also a chance to bolster their goal difference. Arsenal are currently on 24, with City (fourth) on 33 and Liverpool (third) on 29.

Arguably the hardest of Arsenal’s four remaining matches is on the final day of the season.

They were defeated by Everton 2-1 earlier in the season, with Ronald Koeman’s side coming from a goal down to snatch victory.

The defeat in December stopped Arsenal from going top of the league but now, a loss at the hands of Romelu Lukaku and Co could stop them from reaching Europe’s elite club competition altogether.

Harrison Reed could be interested in loan move away from Southampton

Show/hide article…

Southampton youngster Harrison Reed is ready to consider his future this summer after failing to break into Claude Puel’s plans.

The 22-year-old is highly-rated at St Mary’s but has made just one Premier League start this season.

Reed had become a fixture in previous manager Ronald Koeman’s plans but has struggled for minutes under Puel.

The midfielder signed a new long-term deal in December and is no rush to make a quick decision over his permanent future.

But a loan move for next season, however, could interest Reed as he looks to get more first team football under his belt.

Reed’s future is likely to depend on whether Puel remains at the club this summer.

Saints chiefs are considering whether to part with their French boss this summer amid growing supporter unrest.

Charlie Austin could be added to the Southampton squad for the visit of Arsenal.

The striker has been out since December with a shoulder injury but played for the club’s under-23 side on Friday along with full-back Matt Targett, who is returning from a hamstring problem.

Defender Virgil van Dijk (ankle) and back-up goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (hamstring) remain on the sidelines.

Southampton FC news: Eric Black wants Chelsea and Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk to stay, but 'he may have options to leave’

Show/hide article…

Southampton assistant manager Eric Black is hoping Virgil van Dijk remains at Southampton this summer, though he accepts the Netherlands defender will have options to leave St Mary’s.

Since moving to the south coast in September 2015, Van Dijk has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.

Still just 25, a host of clubs have been linked with signing the Dutch international, and recent reports claim Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea are tracking Van Dijk - despite him sitting out injured since January.

A fee of £50m has been suggested should Van Dijk depart St Mary’s this summer, but Saints assistant manager Eric Black does not want to lose his team captain.

Speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT, Black responded to the latest rumours surrounding the superb centre-back.

He said: “We’d love to see Virgil van Dijk stay. He’s obviously the one everyone has been talking about [leaving].

“It would be wonderful [if he stayed], and would be a big step forward for Southampton if we could keep him.

“But he’s one of the best centre-backs in the world, so he may well have options [to leave].”
