How much does your Premier League club pay to agents?

Show/hide article…

Fifa are investigating Paul Pogba’s return to Manchester United amid claims his agent, Mino Raiola (bottom right), will earn a whopping £41m from the deal over the course of the player’s contract.

With that in mind, here we chart what each Premier League club spent on agents (or intermediaries, as they are officially known) in the 12-month period between 2 February 2016 and 31 January 2017.

Of course, United’s figure may well rise over the next few years if the Pogba rumours are true. but we are going on the numbers published by the FA last month.

A staggering £174m was spent in total, but where does your team rank?

Batshuayi and Long on West Ham wishlist as Bilic targets pace

Show/hide article…

West Ham will prioritise pace when they strengthen their squad in the summer.

Now that Premier League safety is assured, the board, manager Slaven Bilic and head of recruitment Tony Henry have begun planning for next season, with the emphasis on signing mobile players who will increase the tempo of the team.

Apart from Michail Antonio, who is out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury, there is a lack of lightning pace in the squad and Bilic will be looking to rectify that situation, especially with the bigger pitch at London Stadium in mind.

The playing surface is 105m x 68m, which is almost five metres longer than it was at the club’s previous home, the Boleyn Ground.

West Ham’s players, while finding it difficult initially, have gradually adjusted to their new environment and last Friday’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham was, arguably, their best all-round team performance since they moved there last summer.

Against Tottenham, Bilic’s team managed to get behind the visitors’ defence on occasions but, again, their lack of real pace let them down.

So, quick offensive players are what are required by the Hammers — and preferably those who have Premier League experience.

Southampton’s Republic of Ireland striker Shane Long, who was on the club’s radar last summer, could again become a target, while another player who would fit the bill is Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi.

West Ham looked favourites to sign the Belgian international last year after offering his then club Marseille £30million. Crystal Palace joined the race with an increased offer of £31.5m but the 23-year-old striker finally joined Chelsea for £33.2m. Batshuayi’s opportunities have been limited — all 17 of his Premier League appearances have come off the bench — and the Stamford Bridge club could be prepared to let him go this summer, probably on a loan deal.

The experiment of playing Antonio in a wide, defensive position proved a failure, while their only other specialised right-back, Sam Byram, has been plagued with injury.

The future of West Ham goalkeeper Adrian also remains uncertain. Although restored to being first-choice goalkeeper and playing well, his contract expires this summer and several La Liga clubs are interested in signing the Spaniard.

Adrian has intimated that he wants to stay but with assurances that he will remain the No1.

West Ham have been linked with a move for Manchester City’s Joe Hart, who is on loan at Torino.

Arsenal squad vs Southampton revealed ahead of clash

Show/hide article…

Arsenal are sweating on the fitness of Laurent Koscielny ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League trip to Southampton .

The defender is struggling with a calf problem but manager Arsene Wenger is hoping he will pass a fitness test to be involved at St Mary’s.

Granit Xhaka limped out of the win over Manchester United at the weekend but should be fit and Lucas Perez is also available following a thigh problem but Shkodran Mustafi (thigh) and Santi Cazorla (Achilles) remain sidelined.

Charlie Austin could be added to the Southampton squad for the visit of the Gunners.

The striker has been out since December with a shoulder injury but played for the club’s under-23 side on Friday along with full-back Matt Targett, who is returning from a hamstring problem.

Defender Virgil van Dijk (ankle) and back-up goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (hamstring) remain on the sidelines.

Yoshida: We must focus on our jobs

Show/hide article…

Victory for Claude Puel’s men would move them up to eighth in the table, and Yoshida is keen for Saints to make the most of that opportunity.

“It’s another important game for us against Arsenal,” he explained.

“We know they will fight because they can still get to fourth place and the Champions League places.

“But we know we can still get to eighth so it is an important game for us, hopefully we will get a good result.”

Saints head into the game following a goalless stalemate away at Liverpool on Sunday.

And Yoshida wants to see more of the fighting spirit that Saints displayed at Anfield when they host Arsenal this evening.

“We showed a good fighting spirit and solidarity against Liverpool,” he continued.

“It was great to come away with a hard-earned point, especially after Fraser stopped the penalty from James Milner.

“But we have to continue like this and play in that manner against Manchester United and Arsenal. We have four games to go and we must focus on our jobs.”

Southampton manager Claude Puel on shortlist for Saint Etienne job - reports

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel has been linked with the Saint Etienne job.

The Frenchman has enjoyed a decent first season in English football after taking over from Ronald Koeman in the summer.

Although the league form has been mixed, Southampton have steered clear of relegation trouble and also made the final of the EFL Cup, where they were narrowly beaten by Manchester United.

However it has been suggested in France that his position on the south coast is uncertain, as talkSPORT told you earlier this month.

And now, according to L’Equipe, Puel is on the shortlist of potential candidates to take over at Saint Etienne.

It has been confirmed that current boss Christophe Galtier will be stepping down at the end of the season after nearly eight years in charge.

And it has been said that the Ligue 1 club could turn to Puel to pen their next chapter.
