Jason Burt’s Premier League team of the weekend

Show/hide article…

In what was a good weekend for goalkeepers – fine performances from Adrian, David De Gea, Petr Cech and Fraser Forster (despite his gamesmanship) – it was once again Jordan Pickford who made the cut.

The 23 year-old has been outstanding for Sunderland all season and although they will not be in the Premier League next season it is likely that their goalkeeper will be.

But who else makes this week’s XI?

Loan Watch: Gallagher’s season ends on sour note

Show/hide article…

The Saints striker turned in an impressive performance at Griffin Park, helping his loan club to victory, but the three points were not enough to keep Tony Mowbray’s men in the second tier, due to fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest and Birmingham City also winning on the final day.

Gallagher played the full match, and was involved in Rovers’ second goal, scored by former Saint Danny Guthrie, after Charlie Mulgrew’s free-kick had put the visitors 1-0 up.

Gallagher went close to extending the advantage on a couple of occasions, before Lasse Vibe pulled one back for the Bees in the second half.

Craig Conway’s late penalty restored Rovers’ two-goal advantage, but results elsewhere went against them.

Gallagher can still reflect on an encouraging individual season in the Championship, as he netted 11 times during the campaign, while also adding another goal in the FA Cup.

Arsenal star Xhaka doubtful for Southampton game with ankle injury

Show/hide article…

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka could miss Wednesday’s Premier League game at Southampton due to a recurring ankle injury, manager Arsene Wenger said after his side’s 2-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday.

Xhaka, who sustained an ankle injury during Arsenal’s loss at Tottenham Hotspur on April 30, scored the opening goal at the Emirates on Sunday but was forced off in the 76th minute.

‘He got injured last time and he got a recurrence of that,’ Wenger said after the game.

‘We’ll see. I don’t know,’ Wenger said when asked if he was fit for the trip to St Mary’s Stadium.

Xhaka, who joined Arsenal before the start of the season, has scored four goals in 41 appearances for the club in all competitions.

‘He has improved from the start to now,’ Wenger told the BBC. ‘He is slowly getting stature in the middle of the park.’

Sixth-placed Arsenal beat Southampton 5-0 in the FA Cup in January but have recorded one league win in their last six visits to St Mary’s.

Will Virgil van Dijk get your vote for Player of the Season?

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk would have been nailed on for the Daily Echo’s Southampton FC Player of the Season award had injury not brought his season to a premature end.

The Dutchman is one of the finest centre-backs on the planet right now.

He had a pretty special first season after a £13m move from Celtic in the summer of 2015.

But this second term was on another level. Never fazed by anything or anyone, Van Dijk is superior in the air and with his feet.

You’ll never see him flustered, no matter how stressful the situation.

After former captain Jose Fonte’s exit for West Ham in January, Van Dijk continued his outstanding season by being handed the skipper’s armband.

But no sooner had he taken the captaincy that Jamie Vardy ended Van Dijk’s season with a stamp on his foot during Saints’ 3-0 win over Leicester at St Mary’s on January 22.

He exited play on 55 minutes and has not been seen since, having sustained damage to a ligament in his foot.

It was a sad end to what would have be another sensational campaign at Saints.

Despite his absence the interest in his signature has not waned, with a £50m switch to any of the big sides having been talked about in the press.

Claude Puel remains adamant that Van Dijk is very much part of their plans for next season, but the feeling among fans is perhaps the world class 25-year-old may have played his last game for the club.

Nonetheless, Van Dijk deserves for his imperious displays prior to injury to be on the shortlist for player of the season.

Southampton, Crystal Palace and Everton may bid for Henry Onyekuru

Show/hide article…

Southampton, Crystal Palace and Everton are weighing up offers for teenage striker Henry Onyekuru.

The 19-year-old Nigerian scored his fifth goal in seven games for Belgian side Eupen on Sunday.

Onyekuru wasn’t able to prevent his side going down 2-1 to Genk but did enhance his reputation further as he took his season’s tally to 18 goals.

Club Brugge and Anderlecht have made £6.7million offers for the teenager though his preference is to come to England.

However, Premier League clubs will need to outbid the Belgian duo and offer wages of around £32,000 a week for him to qualify for a work permit under the totting-up procedure.

Onyekuru has scored the majority of his goals from the wing but can play across the frontline, as Eupen finished 13th in the regular season Jupiler League table.
