Mignolet could have been sent off, says Saints boss Puel

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Claude Puel suggested Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet was perhaps lucky not to have been red-carded for a handball outside his area missed by referee Bobby Madley.

Puel was also not happy with Madley’s decision to award the home side a penalty in the 66th minute when Jack Stephens was judged to have handled Lucas’ cross.

‘I think this penalty is harsh,’ said Puel.

'Jack turns and the ball falls on his arm, but it was not intentional. The save was important, for Fraser of course, but for all the squad.

‘On the other side, there could have been a sending-off of Mignolet when he touched the ball outside his box.’

Puel praised his side for keeping a fourth clean sheet against Liverpool this season, having stood firm in the goalless Premier League encounter at St Mary’s in November and the two-legged EFL Cup semi-final in January.

‘Two draws, two wins and four clean sheets is a fantastic job against this team,’ the Frenchman added.

'It was difficult for us to make some counter-attacks, but it is fantastic work from the squad.

‘We defended very well, with good structure, organisation and discipline.’

WATCH: Fraser Forster’s sneaky tactics at Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Fraser Forster produced a great save to deny James Milner from the penalty spot on Sunday, but how influential were his mind games?

Having already kept three clean sheets against Liverpool this season, Southampton’s players were keen to extend this impressive run, but none so much as goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

When referee Bobby Madley pointed to the spot after Jack Stephens’ handball just after the hour, Saints hearts sunk. Milner hadn’t missed in 12 attempts since joining Liverpool in 2015, or at all in nine years; Forster wasn’t about to let that continue.

As his England colleague placed the ball on the spot, the stopper muttered words in the direction of Milner and also appeared to scrape his foot by the spot. Be it the divot or his words, something surely gave Forster the upper hand as he dived low to keep the spot-kick out.

Milner himself denied Forster’s intimidation had distracted him after the game, while Jurgen Klopp accused the keeper of displaying unsportsmanlike behaviour in the build-up.

Did Forster use underhand tactics prior to Milner’s penalty? Click on the link above to decide for yourself…

Watch Liverpool 0-0 Southampton highlights

Show/hide article…

Liverpool surrendered their advantage in the race for Champions League football once again after failing to score in a goalless draw against bogey side Southampton for the fourth time this season.

James Milner’s first penalty failure in more than seven years proved decisive as the Saints proved adept at denying their opponents - as they had done in the reverse league encounter and the two-legged EFL Cup semi-final in January.

Liverpool’s goal drought against the south-coast club now stands at 428 minutes since Daniel Sturridge scored in the 22nd minute of a 3-2 defeat at St Mary’s in March last year.

A point may have lifted them back into third, above Manchester City, but it left the door open for fifth-placed Manchester United and Arsenal, who both have matches in hand.

THE VERDICT: Puel gets the performance he needed

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel struck a defiant tone in the build-up to Saints’ game at Liverpool, but what he really needed was a defiant performance from his team. And he got it.

We all know by now that the Saints boss is not one for demonstrative displays of emotion, but he fought back in his own, slightly unique, way.

It was hardly fire and brimstone stuff, more understated, calm and measured.

But that Puel did actually stand up for himself, admit his surprise at rumours of his supposedly imminent sacking and explain why he believes he has done a solid job at St Mary’s showed another side to him.

It wasn’t one of somebody just prepared to meekly roll over. It was of strength and determination, the kind of qualities he showed as a dogged central midfield warhorse in his playing days.

Puel hasn’t really talked the talk all season, but what he needed more than anything was a display of character from his side.

Heading to Liverpool everybody knew the Reds would be tough opponents, but with two wins and a draw against them in the top flight and EFL Cup this season, it was safe to deduce their style would maybe suit Saints.

Indeed, free of the kind of pressure they clearly felt at home to Hull the previous week, there was every justification for a vaguely similar approach to the game.

Sitting deep, soaking up pressure and trying to forge the odd chance on the counter attack is fair enough for Saints at Anfield. It’s not at home to Hull, whether that was what they set out to do or not.

Puel is fighting to prove himself as Saints boss, and has found himself in an odd position where you feel he needs performances possibly more than results.

Though Saints don’t want to slip down the table, there isn’t that much really left to play for, a matter of a handful of positions either way.

But for Puel there is the opportunity to show that he is the man to take Saints forward.

To do that he needs the players to show they are playing for him, with spirit and character, and are prepared to dig deep.

They did exactly that at Anfield.

It was a defensive set-up, it was a little negative, but it was justifiable, and in executing it well and getting a point Puel can feel satisfied that it was the right call.

He needs to get the side showing a bit more in attack in the four games left to come this season, but this was at least a starting point to build from after a few disappointments.

The first half at Anfield had a similar pattern to last week’s goalless draw against Hull.

Saints sat deep and allowed their opponents plenty of possession, but Liverpool without Sadio Mane lack cutting edge and are very one dimensional.

They really played into Saints’ hands, conducting most of their passing game in front of a bank of ten men who were disciplined and allowed no space between the lines.

The only half chances of the first 45 minutes fell the way of Liverpool, but were only shots from outside the box.

Roberto Firmino robbed Oriol Romeu but saw his effort blocked before Philippe Coutinho cut inside onto his right foot but curled a shot straight into the arms of Fraser Forster.

The Saints keeper made further routine stops from Firmino and a deflected drive from Emre Can.

Saints came more into the game in their own right in the second period.

Though inevitably they had to endure plenty of pressure and continue to defend well, they gave a more encouraging account of themselves.

Again opportunities were few and far between and Saints were grateful for their big keeper Forster, who also proved a point after collecting a few critics of late.

It was he who produced an excellent penalty save on 66 minutes which ultimately denied Liverpool the win.

The award of the spot kick by referee Bobby Madley was debatable.

Divock Origi flicked on a Lucas cross and Jack Stephens nudged the ball away with his upper arm, though how deliberate it was was hard to determine.

James Milner struck his penalty hard and low but Forster stopped it full length down to his right.

Forster was in business again to block from Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana but perhaps the most dramatic of the late saves came in stoppage time as the keeper turned over from Marko Grujic’s header as Liverpool piled forward desperate for a win to boost their Champions League ambitions.

Thank to Saints’ rear guard action it didn’t come – a fourth clean sheet in four against the Reds this season - and they walked away with a point.

For Puel it was about more than simply the result, however.

Make no mistake, he is still walking a tightrope, and with four matches to come in a week and a half to round off the season there is much water to pass under the bridge.

In football, where momentum is so vital, things could still go either way for him.

Whether his future really does depend on such a small snapshot of the campaign remains to be seen.

But at the very least he has another performance to point to as he fights to show he has what it takes for the long term at Saints.

Puel considers return to rotation

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel will consider rotating his side as they undertake a busy finale to the Premier League season.

No sooner had Saints got off the pitch at Anfield following the goalless draw with Liverpool then attentions were turning to Wednesday’s game against Arsenal at St Mary’s.

After that Saints face a trip to Middlesbrough before back-to-back home fixtures to round off the campaign against Manchester United and Stoke, as they play five games in the final fortnight of the season.

Puel started the campaign regularly rotating when the fixture burden was at its peak, and admitted he will consider it again, particularly after the amount of work his team put in to contain Liverpool.

He said: “We will see. I don’t know the recovery with every player. We will see Monday and Tuesday.

“It was a strong effort, with good runs, and it was a fantastic game with a very good draw and a point. Very difficult but I am satisfied against this team because we deny them good position to shoot and it was important to keep this discipline and I am satisfied also the save of Fraser.

“He maintained the team with a draw in the game and it’s a good reward for all the team and I think it’s a good draw.”

Puel felt it was a case of justice done as Fraser Forster saved James Milner’s second half penalty in what proved to be the crucial action of the 0-0 draw at Anfield.

Referee Bobby Madley awarded the spot kick for a supposed handball against Jack Stephens.

Though there was little dispute that the ball struck the arm of the young defender, Saints felt hard done by given his proximity to Divock Origi who had flicked on a Lucas cross.

Liverpool were frustrated by what they believed were deliberate Saints tactics to try and slow down the taking of the kick to increase the pressure on Milner.

But Puel refused to be drawn on the issue, and instead pointed out his belief that Simon Mignolet was lucky to escape without punishment after suggestions he handled the ball outside his area towards the end of the game.

“I think it’s harsh this penalty because Jack turns and the ball falls on his arm but it was unintentional I think,” insisted Puel.

“It was too harsh to concede a goal against a penalty and it was important this save for Fraser but also all the squad because for me it was not a penalty.

“On the other side you can have a sending off for Mignolet when he touches the ball outside his box.
