Stephens reflects on huge night at Anfield

Show/hide article…

The 23-year-old was part of the side that secured a famous 1-0 victory in the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-final with Liverpool last January, in what was only his fourth start for Claude Puel’s team.

Since then, Stephens has gone on to become an established part of the team, alongside Maya Yoshida, at the heart of the defence.

Looking back, it is clear to him how important that night at Anfield was in his development.

“Obviously, it was a great night for the team and the fans and everyone at the club, because getting to the final was a massive achievement for everyone,” he said.

"Obviously, on a personal note, coming into the team, I was just delighted to be involved and to get the right result.

"I think looking back it was quite a big game for me. Obviously, at the time, I was just focused on doing my job and helping the team, but looking back it does seem like it was a massive game for me and it was one that I had to show what I could do.

“I feel like I did that, and I’ve been able to play a few games since then as well, which has been brilliant for me.”

Stephens’ performance that night was perhaps all the more impressive given the focus on his introduction to the side following injury to Virgil van Dijk, with the television cameras firmly trained on him in the moments before kick-off.

“I think there was a lot of attention on me, but that was obviously down to Virgil being out and there was a lot of talk before the game about whether we were going to cope and whether we would get through that game,” said Stephens.

“So I did know that there was a lot of pressure on me, but I didn’t really feel under any sort of real pressure. It was just important for me to concentrate on my game and help the team and get a clean sheet, which we did.”

With Liverpool kicking off a run to the end of the season that also sees Saints host Arsenal and Manchester United, Stephens believes there is opportunity to further his development in the next two weeks.

“That’s what you want to be involved in, is games against the best players, so you can test yourself,” he said. “We have got some massive games coming up and I’m really looking forward to them.”

Puel: Saints will be stronger next season

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel believes Saints will be stronger next season for the “experience and maturity” his squad have racked up during a turbulent campaign.

The Saints boss claimed his side are the second youngest in the Premier League, and is clearly proud of the way he has tried to develop young players such as Jack Stephens, James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond, as well as giving more chances to the likes of Oriol Romeu and Maya Yoshida.

Puel is coming under a lot of pressure from fans frustrated with the Saints boss’s style of play, but to the man himself it is a work in progress, which will only improve for the experiences of this season.

“Just I want to give positivity for the future for the club, always to try to improve,” insisted Puel.

“With all this games, the European games, the cup games, it is interesting for the end of the season and next season.

“The maturity and experience is fantastic games and we have the second youngest team on the league and it’s important with this good work to see this for the last five games and for the next season.

“I think also we can do a good play, a good football, and when we play in different countries or different teams people say we can play good football with quality and often we lack sometimes consistency and sometimes also the good clinical edge.

“All this we know we have to correct this for the next season because we can do better and we want to keep the good ambition because we are competitors.”

Saints travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool this weekend, recalling memories of their win on Merseyside to reach the EFL Cup final.

After the joy of that moment, it has been a harder few months for Puel, who really needs a rallying final five games to help bolster support for his position.

“It’s important of course to finish with strong games, with good focus and good concentration about the last games,” he reflected.

“We have five games, we have two games postponed and it’s interesting to keep our possibilities to play this game with a good intensity, with quality, and to try of course to finish as high as possible in the league. It is very important for us.

“We know it’s a difficult schedule and we will play against Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal and Middlesbrough, a difficult game away because they want to stay in the league so it’s very important for them.

“It’s important for us this season because we do fantastic games, great games, but sometimes without the good reward and clinical edge and this was a lot of disappointment after many games.

“I think the quality was very interesting, the work was very interesting and it will be important for us to finish with strong games.”

Live blog: Liverpool vs Southampton

Show/hide article…

Liverpool host Southampton this weekend and there is no doubt that the stakes are higher for the home side.

The match kicks off at 1.30pm on Sunday 7 May.

It will be shown live on Sky Sports 1, with coverage beginning at 12.30pm.

One player the Merseysiders will be targeting this summer is Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk, who will have a host of Champions League clubs chasing him. The Dutchman has been a huge miss for Claude Puel since his foot injury in January, and Liverpool will be hoping to take advantage of his absence when the sides meet.

Philippe Coutinho is expected to hand his side a huge boost by starting the game despite an injury scare against Watford, when he was forced off with a dead leg, while Adam Lallana is likely to start after looking sharp on his return from injury in the same game: an occasion decided by a sublime Emre Can bicycle kick. Southampton have no new injury concerns and it is probable they will field the same team which drew 0-0 with Hull last weekend.

Klopp will be wary of Liverpool’s inconsistent form this season which has seen them excel in games against teams in and around the top of the table, but struggle against those below them. Their defence has been porous at times, conceding just two less goals (42) than mid-table Southampton in the league, which will encourage the likes of Gabbiadini that there are goals up for grabs in this game.

Adam Lallana: His recent absence through injury was noticeable and Liverpool will be expecting the Englishman to push them on to a strong finish to the season. He provides them with much needed versatility in a fluid front three alongside Firmino and Coutinho, and can make the difference in tight games. He looked good when he came on against Watford and will need to produce more of the same against Southampton.

Liverpool have not beaten Southampton since December 2015, when they won 6-1 at St Mary’s in the League Cup. However, the Merseyside club have won 47 per cent of the 82 games played between the two sides in all competitions.

Liverpool recorded their biggest victory over Southampton, a 7-1 thrashing in the 1998/99 season at Anfield in which Robbie Fowler scored a hat trick and his 100th goal for the club.

Oriol Romeu. The ex-Chelsea man has been in excellent form for the Saints this season and is vitally important in his anchoring midfield role. His tackling, interceptions and distribution are his strongest attributes which give his defenders reliable cover and his attackers accurate service.

He will be tasked with thwarting Liverpool’s creative sparks at Anfield and will need to get his job right to give Southampton a chance of keeping their opponents out.

Liverpool vs Southampton team news

Show/hide article…

Liverpool are almost there; a top four finish in the Premier League is within reach, but a typical test of their resolve awaits in Southampton at home.

It’s the sort of clash they should be winning, especially at Anfield, but too often have Jurgen Klopp’s side dropped points in the ones they should be winning.

With Manchester United and Arsenal taking points off each other, nothing less than three points will do here. While Claude Puel is seemingly under pressure, might a big result here convince the Saints to persevere with the French boss.

Let’s take a look at how the sides are shaping up.

Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho looks set to recover from a dead leg to start against Southampton on Sunday.

Midfielder Adam Lallana could be in line to start after playing 74 minutes at Watford, his first action in five weeks after a thigh injury.

Striker Daniel Sturridge’s fitness continues to be managed and he is likely to only be on the bench again.

Charlie Austin could make a long-awaited Southampton return in Sunday’s Premier League clash at Liverpool.

The former QPR striker has been sidelined since dislocating his shoulder in Southampton’s 1-1 Europa League home draw with Hapoel Be’er Sheva on December 8.

But now the 27-year-old could yet be ready to make the Saints squad for the weekend trip to Anfield.
