Liverpool vs Southampton live stream details, channel and kick-off

Show/hide article…

Liverpool have a top three finish in their sights.

Ensuring Champions League football next season is now in their own hands after a week where none of their rivals won.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are three points ahead of fourth placed Manchester City.

Although the Reds have played a game more than City, they have a slightly better goal difference.

Southampton manager Claude Puel has come under pressure in recent weeks.

The Saints currently sit in ninth position but also face Arsenal and Manchester United before the season ends.

Puel said this week he expects to remain as Southampton manager next season.

But the Frenchman could still lose his job if results do not improve.

Here is all the key info ahead of Sunday’s clash.

Kick off is at 1:30pm on Sunday 7th May.

It will be live on Sky Sports 1 from Anfield.

Sky Sports customers can watch the game on all eligible devices, including PC/Desktop/MAC, NOW TV box, iPhone, iPad, Android phone or Android tablet.

Failing that, you can follow all of the action on our Mirror Football live blog.

Philippe Coutinho limped off with a thigh injury just 10 minutes into Liverpool’s game at Watford on Monday.

But the Brazilian playmaker is in line to make an immediate return to the squad for Sunday’s encounter.

Adam Lallana could make a first start for over a month.

The Reds will definitely be without Sadio Mane, Danny Ings and captain Jordan Henderson who all continue to recover from long-term injuries.

Charlie Austin has a slight chance of featuring for the first time since early December.

The striker has been out due to a dislocated shoulder, but any appearance is likely to come from the bench.

Adam Lallana’s return to the starting 11 could give the Reds an added boost ahead of their end of season run-in.

The England midfielder will be looking to add to his seven goals and seven assists from 28 league appearances.

Nathan Redmond has been a top performer for the Saints this season, leading to a first senior England cap earlier this season.

He has also attracted admirers across the Premier League.

The likes of Manolo Gabbiadini will rely on his service from wide areas on Sunday.

Finishing in a Champions League spot next season in your team’s own hands.

Southampton have only won two of their last eight Premier League games.

Southampton defeated Liverpool over two legs in the EFL Cup semi final earlier this year. The Saints triumphed 1-0 in each game.

Klopp’s side have failed to score in three meetings against the Saints this season.

You have to go back to December 2015 for the last time that Liverpool beat Southampton. It finished 6-1 in the League Cup.

Liverpool (WLWWDW) come into the game off the back of a narrow 1-0 away victory over Watford on Monday night.

Emre Can’s stunning scorpion kick goal was the difference between the two sides.

Southampton (DLLWWD) drew 0-0 at home to relegation threatened Hull City last weekend.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: “There is positive pressure. We can go for something.

“We know about the quality of the opponent. I like watching Southampton.

“Our plan for Sunday is to use Anfield. For some it’s a nervy situation, but we need to be brave, enjoy the game and use the crowd.”

Southampton manager Claude Puel: “There has been of lot of disappointment after many games, but it’s important for us to finish strongly now.

“We’re ninth in the table with all these games, all these injuries, so its okay in the project.

“We can do better and we want to retain strong ambition because we are competitors."

Puel praises award winners

Show/hide article…

Romeu scooped both the Players’ and Fans’ Player of the Season prizes this week, while Yoshida received the President’s Choice Award from Saints legend Terry Paine.

Puel was delighted for both men, praising their efforts and their improvement this term, as he spoke ahead of Sunday’s trip to Liverpool.

On Romeu, Puel said: “I think it’s a good reward for him. I think he deserves this, because he has had a fantastic season with consistency and quality. He is good with the ball and, of course, at recovering the ball. I think he’s a very good player and it has been a great season for him.”

Speaking about Yoshida, Puel added: "It’s the same, like Oriol - at the beginning of the season Maya was not a starting player, but he has won his place with great games, European games, and he has improved a lot this season.

“He is a very good centre-back now with personality. It’s the same with Oriol – he took confidence and he is an important player for the team.”

Puel: A different challenge

Show/hide article…

Saints triumphed 1-0 when the teams met in the second leg of their semi-final earlier in the season, as they advanced past the Reds 2-0 on aggregate.

They now head back to face Liverpool for the first time since that night – and for what will be the fourth time this season – but Puel expects this to be a completely different type of encounter.

"We know Liverpool well now, and for them it’s the same,” said the Saints boss. "We have good memories against them from the last games, but this is another game.

"It’s the Premier League, and we know it will be difficult to play against them at Anfield, because they want to qualify for the Champions League next season, but it’s a good game for us.

"We like this game, with intensity, rhythm and pressure. It’s a good thing for all the squad to keep the good concentration and the good motivation until the end of the season.

“I think it will be a different game. It’s not two games for the cup. It’s another game and we cannot stay just with the memory of what we have done against Liverpool – we need to prepare this game with the strong focus about our game and our qualities, to defend together and attack together and to give a good answer also after our poor game against Hull City.”

Man City fight back to relegate Southampton

Show/hide article…

Late goals from Manchester City earned them a 4-2 fightback win over Southampton that relegated their opponents from Premier League 2 Division 1.

Southampton took a 2-0 lead at City Football Academy through Nathan Tella’s fine solo goal just before half-time and Sam McQueen scoring from a corner after the break.

But City found a way back when Sadou Diallo scored before Rodney Kongolo’s curling shot made it 2-2 with 14 minutes left.

Charlie Oliver put City ahead three minutes later while Lukas Nmecha claimed the fourth from the penalty spot.

The victory means City are guaranteed second place behind champions Everton while Southampton go down with 21 points from their 22 matches.

Matt Le Tissier: I wasn’t surprised when Adam Lallana left Southampton

Show/hide article…

That’s the view of Southampton legend Matthew Le Tissier, who says the England international is enjoying the time of his life under the Liverpool boss.

Le Tissier believes the forward has blossomed into a vital cog in the Red machine because of his ability with either foot and the fact his confidence levels have skyrocketed.

But where the man nicknamed ‘Le God’ has seen the biggest improvement is in the 28-year-old’s conditioning.

The former Saints star said: “Obviously, I watched Adam a lot at Southampton. And he excited me. He developed an understanding with Rickie Lambert that carried the club through two divisions to the Premier League. They weren’t on their own, of course, but it played a huge part in the club’s success.

“It soon became clear he had the ability to play for a big club. It was no surprise to me that he moved on.

“It wasn’t plain sailing for him at first under Brendan Rodgers. It has taken Adam time to settle in.

“Now he has. In some respects, he would be a dream player for Klopp because he is two-footed. Defenders cannot show him on to his favourite foot if he can use both equally well. So that gives Klopp a lot of flexibility. He can swap and change.

“One area where I have seen a marked improvement is in his fitness levels. At Liverpool, his work ethic has definitely improved. I’ve seen him cover every single blade of grass in some matches.

“He’s been prepared to go back and help his midfielders or track runs. And that is in addition to the work he is paid to do up front – create and score. I genuinely think we are now seeing the best of Adam Lallana in terms of his ability, understanding of the game and his energy levels. His time is now.”

Le Tissier singled out Sadio Mane as the other former Saints’ player who he believes will have a big say in Liverpool’s future, although he believes the Reds need to add more quality in specific areas if they are to become title winners. He said: “What sticks out this season for Liverpool is the amount of points they have dropped against teams near the foot of the table.

“By my reckoning, they have lost 17 points against the likes of Bournemouth, Swansea, Hull, and drawn at Sunderland.

“Against the top teams, they’ve performed well. They’ve taken four points from Chelsea, for instance.

“They haven’t had any European football either and were knocked out of the FA Cup early on, so the players have not been overworked. Yes, they have been unlucky with injuries but it probably tells us about the mentality.

“It needs to be sharp all the time in the Premier League because, if you let your standards drop, you can lose to anyone.

“They need real quality in a few positions. James Milner has done well at left-back, but that’s not his natural position. And they need another central midfielder because Emre Can doesn’t convince me. Klopp probably needs to look at his centre-halves too.

“So there have been big positives from his first season. But with Champions League football on the horizon, Klopp has to add real quality in a few areas, if they are to end up top of the pile next season.”

But while Klopp’s future at Liverpool is secure, his opposite number on Sunday faces an uncertain summer. As far as Le Tissier is concerned, though, Claude Puel should stay.

The Frenchman came within a whisker of leading the Saints to glory in the League Cup and were also kept busy in the Europa League.

Le Tissier says the workload should be less next season and believes Puel has done enough to stay in the job.

He said: “The amount of fixtures he’s had to prepare for hasn’t helped and there have been key injuries. Having said that, I’d like to see more consistency in team selection. Fans have been frustrated at times by what he has chosen.”

Sky Sports is the only place to watch the Premier League run-in, including Liverpool v Southampton and arsenal v Manchester United.

Southampton boss Claude Puel blasts squad: Give Manolo Gabbiadini the service he needs

Show/hide article…

Gabbiadini, 25, struck six times in his first four Southampton matches in all competitions but has since drawn a blank in four Premier League appearances. Saints laboured to a goalless draw against Hull last time out and must now sharpen up their attacking play at Liverpool today. And former Nice boss Puel has accepted Gabbiadini needs smarter support from Saints’ creative talents. “Football’s a collective game, a striker needs good quality in the final third,” said Puel.

“Manolo is a very good striker but he needs to have good opportunities” “Manolo is a very good striker but he needs to have good opportunities. “It’s important for the rest of the players to see him, to find a good relationship and create the possibilities for him to play in the final third. “We have all this quality around the penalty area to produce good moves, with clinical edge, for Manolo or someone else to finish the action. And of course we need to find the spaces, good crosses, good passes and good balance between the players. "We’ve found it in many games but it wasn’t there against Hull and it was difficult for our offensive players to find a situation and solution.”

The last time Saints were at Anfield Puel’s men pulled off a battling 1-0 win that secured their place in the EFL Cup final. Southampton went on to lose the Wembley showpiece 3-2 to Manchester United with Gabbiadini scoring twice as well as having a perfectly legal goal disallowed. And defender Jack Stephens believes that semi-final second leg victory has given him a huge confidence boost. Stephens, 23, said: “It was a great night for the team and the fans and everyone at the club because getting to the final was a massive achievement for everyone.

“On a personal note, coming into the team, I was just delighted to be involved and to get the right result. “I think looking back it was quite a big game for me. At the time I was just focused on doing my job and helping the team. “But looking back it does seem like it was a massive game for me and it was one where I had to show what I could do. "I feel like I did that and I’ve been able to play a few games since then as well which has been brilliant for me.”
