THE VERDICT: Pellegrino can’t get a break

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has got to be wondering what he can do to get a bit of a break at the moment.

After nine games without a win Saints were ten minutes from finally getting a much-needed victory when the manager took the decision to withdraw Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and replace him Mario Lemina.

Hojbjerg had played solidly but as a young player starting his third game in a week could have been tiring, with his side fighting to defend a one goal advantage.

The wall of noise from the 5,000 strong Saints following was remarkable. The boos rang out, followed by the chants of ‘you don’t know what you’re doing.’ This in a game Saints were winning.

Alright, they weren’t tearing Fulham to shreds, but then with one win in 13 you have to start somewhere, and to expect a team with next to no confidence to suddenly play sparkling attacking football just because they are facing a team from the Championship seems optimistic in the extreme.

There may have been frustration because Saints didn’t keep the ball like they can, and also sat a little deeper as the game wore on, all tactics unlikely to either be effective or prove popular.

Even so, they were winning, and surely that has to be the most important thing, otherwise you want a defeat, which seems odd, as it never is for the greater good.

It is worrying for Pellegrino that things have gone that far, but he knows only more wins will turn it around.

And, therefore, he must take the positives from victory over Fulham.

It was deserved, though not vintage, against a side that made a lot of changes and really didn’t play all that well.

But a win’s a win, and right now Saints will take anything they can get heading to Watford on Saturday for another huge game.

It may only be the tiniest amount of momentum, but it is something to try and build from.

The winning feeling is so easy to forget, and Saints need to remember this, try and bottle it, and take it forward.

Key will be building greater confidence. With that will come the performances and the results.

It is amazing how when you are struggling mentally you retreat a bit, you sit deeper, you don’t use the ball as well. These are the tell-tale signs of players lacking self—belief.

You don’t turn that around by talking but by actions, and getting a win has to help.

On top of that the manager and the squad clearly need assistance from the club in this transfer window, and it is up to those at the top to deliver. That looks like the nearest thing to a silver bullet.

Given the circumstances, Pellegrino did entirely the right thing and went with a strong team to try and get this victory, which was important for so many of the numerous reasons already listed more than the desire for a cup run.

Saints were the better team, but it wasn’t exactly a classic cup tie.

Shane Long had the ball in the back of the net early on but saw his effort chalked out for a narrow offside before James Ward-Prowse missed the target.

However, the midfielder made no mistake when he scored what proved to be the only goal of the game on the half hour mark.

Saints got a bit of luck in the build-up as Long’s attempted pass out wide hit an unwitting Fulham leg and bounced back across the area.

But Ward-Prowse reacted first and produced a sublime left footed finish into the far corner.

Sofiane Boufal almost added another before the break, while there were strong penalty claims for handball against Stefan Johansen turned away by referee Michael Oliver.

Fulham only threatened in first half stoppage time with Tim Ream stretching for a header and putting it over.

The frustration of the Saints fans probably built as a result of Saints going direct too often in the second period as they sat deeper and deeper the more the nerves jangled.

In truth, they could have made it easier for themselves.

Hojbjerg started a move and then got on the end of Long’s cross in the box, but after he brought it under control he fired a shot at David Button.

Long had a tough chance as a cushioned header from Steven Davis came across his body just outside the area but his shot was a long way wide, before Jack Stephens headed against the crossbar from a corner when just a couple of yards out.

Even right at the death a quick break involving the three Saints subs ended with Manolo Gabbiadini having a decent opportunity, but his finish was dreadful.

Fulham might have levelled on 66 minutes, but Lucas Piazon produced an air shot when he could have converted a right wing cross.

The only other moment of danger for Saints was Denis Odoi firing over after Alex McCarthy had spilled a cross.

So perhaps some light relief for Pellegrino.

The reaction of the fans will tell him there is a long way to go yet before he can feel some breathing space, but any comeback has to start somewhere.

Southampton must ‘step up’ after Virgil van Dijk exit

Show/hide article…

Southampton skipper Steven Davis has told his team-mates to step up in the wake of losing Virgil van Dijk and show why they are still fighting for Mauricio Pellegrino.

The Saints secured their first win in 10 games against Fulham in the FA Cup third round on Saturday, handing under-pressure manager Pellegrino some breathing space.

There were songs aimed at the Argentine from the away supporters at Craven Cottage and Davis has urged the squad to come together after Van Dijk’s £75million move to Liverpool.

‘It was a difficult situation for Virgil because players’ heads are going to be turned when they hear certain moves are coming up,’ Davis said. ‘To be fair to him, once the window closed I thought he got his head down and worked hard.

‘People forgot he was out for six months prior to that as well. He’s obviously got his move, now it’s important we move on. He was a good player for us, but we’ve got other players that now need to step up.

‘We’re not in a good position, not happy with the first half of the season and the results we’ve had. We’ve got to be honest with that assessment.

‘We should be doing better but we need to go and show that week in, week out on the pitch so hopefully this is the first step in the right direction. It’s important that we all stick together.’

Southampton must move on from Van Dijk exit, fan unrest - Davis

Show/hide article…

Steven Davis has demanded Southampton use their FA Cup victory at Fulham to revive a season undermined by supporter unrest and Virgil van Dijk’s departure for Liverpool.

Van Dijk has finally left for £75 million, months after becoming unsettled during a period in which manager Mauricio Pellegrino has struggled to convince amid their slide to 17th in the Premier League.

That Pellegrino’s predecessor Claude Puel has impressed since his appointment at Leicester has increased the pressure on him, and perhaps contributed to the club’s supporters chanting for his dismissal.

Even during Saturday’s 1-0, third-round victory at Craven Cottage they sang "You don’t know what you’re doing’’ in response to his decision to replace Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg with Mario Lamina in the 80th minute.

Saturday’s win represented their first in 10 matches, and club captain Davis recognises the importance of it leading to more if they are to arrest their decline.

"Once the window closed I thought Van Dijk got his head down and worked hard; people forgot he was out for six months prior to that as well,’’ the 33-year-old said. "He’s obviously got his move: Now it’s important we move on. He was a good player for us, but we’ve got other players that now need to step up.

"We’re not in a good position: not happy with the first half of the season and the results. We should be doing better but we need to go and show that week in, week out on the pitch so hopefully this [victory at Fulham] is the first step in the right direction.’’

Asked of the chanting aimed at Pellegrino, he responded: "It’s important that we all stick together. We’re not in a position that any of us want to be in: fans, players and staff alike.

"Stuff like that doesn’t really help. We need the fans more than ever at this point in time. Whenever you’re struggling. To be fair, they were in good voice, and came [to Craven Cottage] in good numbers.

"We were obviously gutted last year not to win the [EFL Cup] final, having put in a good performance against Manchester United, but if we can have a little cup run alongside picking up our league form it’d be a boost for everybody.’’

After the end of their run of four successive home victories, Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic demanded his team focus on next week’s Championship fixture at Middlesbrough.

Their central defender Tim Ream believes they remain in contention for promotion to the Premier League, and despite the disappointed of being eliminated from the FA Cup, insists that should become their aim.

"We are frustrated to be dropping out of the competition, but we didn’t do enough to put the ball in the back of the net,’’ said the American, 30.

"The cup was important, we put out a very strong team. We did take it very seriously and wanted to win and we were pushing to get the equaliser but now it is time to switch our focus onto the league and try to get promoted.’’

Steven Davis calls for Southampton unity amid supporter unrest

Show/hide article…

Steven Davis believes Southampton’s FA Cup victory at Fulham could be a turning point in a season undermined by supporter unrest and the big-money departure of Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk left St Mary’s to sign for Liverpool on January 1 while Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has struggled to impress in his first season in charge of the Saints.

Southampton, who sit 17th in the Premier League, are without a league victory in nine matches and there has been disquiet among the supporters in recent weeks.

Pellegrino’s side earned a deserved 1-0 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday but sections of the Saints supporters sang “You don’t know what you’re doing” in response to his decision to in the 80th minute replace Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg with Mario Lemina.

Davis, the Southampton club captain, admits his side are “not in a good position” but believes the victory over Slavisa Jokanovic’s Fulham is “the first step in the right direction” as they bid to change their fortunes.

Asked of the chanting aimed at Pellegrino, Davis responded: "It’s important that we all stick together. We’re not in a position that any of us want to be in: fans, players and staff alike.

"Stuff like that doesn’t really help. We need the fans more than ever at this point in time. Whenever you’re struggling. To be fair, they were in good voice, and came (to Craven Cottage) in good numbers.

“We were obviously gutted last year not to win the (EFL Cup) final, having put in a good performance against Manchester United, but if we can have a little cup run alongside picking up our league form it’d be a boost for everybody.”

Southampton fans’ anti-Pellegrino chants aren’t helping says star Davis

Show/hide article…

Steven Davis has told Southampton fans they are not helping with their anti-Mauricio Pellegrino chanting.

James Ward-Prowse appeared to ease the pressure on his under-fire manager with the only goal of the game to put struggling Saints into the fourth round.

Their victory at Championship side Fulham was their first in 10 games.

But Pellegrino’s second-half decision to replace Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg with Mario Lemina went down like a lead balloon and sparked chants of, ‘You don’t know what you’re doing’.

Skipper Davis said: “It’s important we all stick together.

“We’re not in a position any of us want to be in, fans, players and staff alike.

“The most important thing is we’re all fighting together to move forward in the right direction. Stuff like that doesn’t really help.

“We need the fans more than ever at this point, whenever you’re struggling.

“To be fair, I thought they were in good voice today as well — and they came here in good numbers.”

Ward-Prowse had already gone close with a shot just wide before his goal on 29 minutes, firing home left-footed after the ball fell kindly to him in the box.

Steven Davis calls on fans to back Mauricio Pellegrino after defeat of Fulham ends Saints’ winless run

Show/hide article…

Steven Davis told Southampton fans that turning on Mauricio Pellegrino “doesn’t really help” the team after supporters’ patience with their manager snapped despite their long winless run coming to an end.

Davis, who returned to lead the side in Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Fulham, told Saints followers everyone at the club needed their backing “more than ever” as they attempt to build on their first victory in 10 matches.

Pellegrino appears to have lost the fans judging by their reaction to one of his substitutions at Craven Cottage, which was greeted by chants of: “You don’t know what you’re doing!”

That prompted a direct appeal from club captain Davis, who said: “Stuff like that doesn’t really help. We need the fans more than ever at this point in time - whenever you’re struggling.

“To be fair, I thought they were in good voice today as well, and came here in good numbers.”

He added: “It’s important that we all stick together. We’re not in a position that any of us want to be in, fans, players and staff alike.
