Chelsea to make Virgil van Dijk bid: Southampton will not sell to Liverpool - Steve Nicol

Show/hide article…

Steve Nicol says Virgil van Dijk is likely to end up at Chelsea this summer

That’s the view of former Liverpool ace and pundit Steve Nicol.

Southampton star Van Dijk yesterday handed in a transfer request to force through a move away from the club.

Liverpool and Chelsea have been heavily linked with a move for the Dutch defender, 26, in recent months.

The Reds had to withdraw their interest in Van Dijk earlier this summer after Southampton accused Liverpool of illegally approaching the former Celtic star.

And Nicol says Van Dijk is likely to end up at Chelsea, especially with the Saints standing firm and refusing to sell to Liverpool.

Holland boss weighs in on Van Dijk saga

Show/hide article…

Holland boss Dick Advocaat admits he will have to “deal with things” if Virgil Van Dijk’s Southampton stand-off remains unresolved.

Wantaway Saints defender Van Dijk stepped up his attempts to force his exit by handing in a transfer request.

Liverpool and Chelsea are both keen on the defender £60m Dutch centre-back who has been ordered to train alone after telling Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino he wants to leave.

But with Southampton adamant they won’t cave in and sell Van Dijk, 26, is facing an uncertain future for club and country.

He still has five years left on the six year deal he signed last summer to make him the club’s highest paid player.

And fuming St Mary’s chiefs insist they will happily leave Van Dijk rotting in the stands until he shows a willingness to come back into the fold.

That could have a big knock-on effect for Van Dijk’s international aspirations in World Cup year.

Holland’s bid to reach next summer’s tournament in Russia is in the balance.

They are third in Group A ahead of crunch qualifiers against the team above them, France, and below them, Bulgaria, in the next international break.

Advocaat, who defended Van Dijk’s actions to try and secure a move, said: “I am not the kind of boss who is on the phone all the time.

"But I am watching the situation every day. And I will deal with things, if they don’t change.”

Van Dijk hasn’t played since January when he suffered a season-ending ankle injury.

Advocaat is desperate to have his best defender fit to face France at the end of this month and added: “We need to put up a major wall against their forwards. We need the best players available. And up till now I have always gone for proven quality.’’

Van Dijk wants to join Liverpool and his camp are hopeful that peace will eventually break out between the two clubs for a deal to be done.

Liverpool claimed they had ended their interest and issued a grovelling apology earlier in the summer after Southampton threatened to report them to the Premier League for tapping up Van Dijk.

Meanwhile Southampton insist they have not received any bids for Van Dijk.

They don’t expect any either and are confident their emphatic stance plus the huge sums it would take to make them reconsider will make Van Dijk’s suitors realise bidding is a waste of time.

Born in Libreville, Gabon in September 1993, the central midfielder started his playing career at the age of 11 with French side FC Lorient’s youth academy.

He was promoted to the first team during the 2012-13 season and made 18 appearances before leaving for Marseille in 2013.

Lemina spent two seasons in Ligue 1 with Marseille, where he helped the club to a fourth-place finish in the 2014-15 season.

Throughout the following summer, the young midfielder attracted attention from a number of clubs but eventually completed a season-long loan to Juventus.

The temporary switch to Italy came with an option of a permanent move at the end of the season, which the Old Lady activated on the 29th of April 2016.

During his time in with Juventus, Lemina won back-to-back Serie A and Coppa Italia titles.

Internationally, despite representing France at junior level, the 23-year-old is now a part of the Gabon national side.

Lemina: I am really happy to be here

Show/hide article…

Mario Lemina has expressed his delight at completing his move from Juventus to Southampton.

The 23-year-old has become a club record signing, having today agreed terms on a five-year contract at Staplewood Campus.

“I am really happy to have signed for Southampton,” started Lemina.

“I think that it was the project that attracted me the most and the one my family was really behind. Therefore, I’m really happy to be here.

“As I’ve already said, it was a club that really interested me from the start. I’ve also been aware of their journey in the Europa League and their style of play with plenty of ball possession. So, I’m really happy to have chosen this project.”

Mario Lemina: Southampton sign Juventus midfielder in £18.1m deal

Show/hide article…

Southampton have signed Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina in a club record deal worth up to £18.1m (20m euros) on a five-year deal.

The Gabon international, 23, made 42 appearances for Juve in two seasons, moving on loan from Marseille in 2015 before a £7.5m move last summer.

The Saints will pay an initial £15.4m with the rest depending on his success at the club.

He becomes Mauricio Pellegrino’s second signing of the summer.

Saints vice-chairman Les Reed said Lemina’s signing was a “significant statement of intent from the club”.

Their previous record signing was Moroccan attacking midfielder Sofiane Boufal, who joined from French side Lille for £16m in August 2016.

Stoke, Watford and Leicester had all been linked with Lemina, who was left out of Juve’s squad for their friendly against Tottenham at Wembley on Saturday.

Lemina, who began his career with Lorient, joined Juventus on a season-long loan in 2015 and his move was made permanent as he signed a four-year deal in April 2016.

In his time with the Bianconeri, he won both the Serie A title and the Coppa Italia twice, and featured in last season’s Champions League final against Real Madrid.

Reed described Lemina as an “outstanding” talent, adding: "In a volatile market with some extraordinary and inexplicable transfers taking place, we are determined to go about our work in a diligent and correct way.

“This is a player who has won trophies and played in the Champions League final less than three months ago and he has signed for Saints amid a host of suitors.”

Saints break transfer record to sign Juventus star Lemina

Show/hide article…

SAINTS have broken their transfer record to sign Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina on a five year contract.

The fee for Lemina, which will be paid over three seasons, is believed to be £16m rising to around £18m, which eclipses the £16m paid for Sofiane Boufal last summer.

The Gabon international now links up with Mauricio Pellegrino’s side ahead of the Premier League opener at St Mary’s against Swansea on Saturday.

Lemina’s arrival means Boufal, who was bought for £16m last summer from Lille, is no longer the club’s most expensive signing.

The 23-year-old has previously been linked with Arsenal, Liverpool, West Ham and Watford. He also held talks with Stoke.

But it’s Saints who have won the race for his signature having completed his medical and thrashed out terms of his contract today at Staplewood.

Lemina, who joined Juventus in 2015 from Marseille, is prominently a defensive central midfielder but can also operate at right back and potentially in a back three if required.

Juventus described him as a player who likes “defensive dirty work, tough tackles, timely interceptions and classy finishes”.

It comes after Saints captain and key defender Virgil van Dijk handed in a transfer request in a bid to force through a move away from St Mary’s.

He is Saints’ second summer signing after the arrival of centre-back Jan Bednarek from Lech Poznan for £5m.

Lemina started his career in France, with Lorient, before joining Marseille in 2013 and then moving to Juventus in 2015, initially on loan, before completing a permanent transfer last summer.

In his time with the Bianconeri, he won both the Serie A title and the Coppa Italia twice, and featured in last season’s Champions League final, against Real Madrid.

Vice chairman of football Les Reed said: “Mario is an outstanding talent who has already achieved a great deal in his career, winning a number of titles and gaining experience of playing on some of the biggest stages in world football.

“Investing in a player of Mario’s quality and buying from a club like Juventus is a significant statement of intent from the club, and this is a purchase that has set another club-record fee.

“Mario still has his best years ahead of him, and we believe that he will not only be an excellent acquisition for us in the immediate future, but that he will also be able to realise even more of his potential here in the years to come.

“In a volatile market with some extraordinary and inexplicable transfers taking place, we are determined to go about our work in a diligent and correct way. This is a player who has won trophies and played in the Champions League final less than three months ago and he has signed for Saints amid a host of suitors.

“Mario will complement what is already an extremely strong group of midfield players in our squad, and we are excited about what he will bring to the group.”

Commenting on his move, Mario Lemina said: “I am really happy to have signed for Southampton. I think that it was the project that attracted me the most and the one my family was really behind. I am really happy to be here.”

Southampton sign Lemina after Wenger opts against Arsenal transfer

Show/hide article…

Southampton have confirmed the signing of Mario Lemina from Juventus on a five-year deal.

The announcement comes after Standard Sport revealed that Arsene Wenger rejected recommendations from within the club to sign the 23-year-old midfielder.

Arsenal were first of a number of Premier League clubs to identify Lemina as a possible transfer target at the end of the 2016-17 season.

Standard Sport understands that the Gunners’ performance comparison matrix system - used to help plan their transfer strategy since 2012 - provided data which showed the midfielder would be a useful addition to Wenger’s squad.

While it is understood that Lemina impressed a number of Arsenal scouts, Wenger chose to target players in other positions, bringing in Alexandre Lacazette, Sead Kolasinac, and also targeting Monaco’s Thomas Lemar.

Southampton vice-chairman Les Reed said of the deal: "In a volatile market with some extraordinary and inexplicable transfers taking place, we are determined to go about our work in a diligent and correct way.

"This is a player who has won trophies and played in the Champions League final less than three months ago and he has signed for Saints amid a host of suitors.

“Mario will complement what is already an extremely strong group of midfield players in our squad, and we are excited about what he will bring to the group.”

Lemina said: “I am really happy to have signed for Southampton. I think that it was the project that attracted me the most and the one my family was really behind. I am really happy to be here.”

Southampton break transfer record to sign Mario Lemina on five-year deal from Juventus

Show/hide article…

Southampton have completed the signing of midfielder Mario Lemina from Juventus on a five-year contract for a club record fee.

Sky Sports News understands Saints will pay an initial £16m for the 23-year-old, with the deal potentially rising to £20m.

The Gabon international completed a medical with the south-coast club on Monday and adds depth to new manager Mauricio Pellegrino’s side.

“I am really happy to have signed for Southampton,” Lemina said. “I think that it was the project that attracted me the most and the one my family was really behind. I am really happy to be here.”

Southampton’s vice-chairman Les Reed said: "Mario is an outstanding talent who has already achieved a great deal in his career, winning a number of titles and gaining experience of playing on some of the biggest stages in world football.

"Investing in a player of Mario’s quality and buying from a club like Juventus is a significant statement of intent from the club, and this is a purchase that has set another club-record fee.

Amid continued speculation over the future of their defender Virgil van Dijk, who handed in a transfer request on Monday, Reed added: “In a volatile market with some extraordinary and inexplicable transfers taking place, we are determined to go about our work in a diligent and correct way.”

Lemina started his career in France, with Lorient, before joining Marseille in 2013 and then moving to Juventus in 2015, initially on loan, before completing a permanent transfer last summer.

Southampton make Mario Lemina record signing in £18m deal with Juventus

Show/hide article…

Southampton have broken their transfer record to complete the £18 million signing of Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina and remain resolute in their stance that Virgil van Dijk will not be sold.

Lemina underwent a medical and completed personal terms in Southampton on a five-year deal after also being tracked by Leicester City, Stoke City, Watford and Arsenal. The 23-year-old was part of the Juventus squad that won both Serie A and the Coppa Italia twice and he also featured in the Champions League final in June against Real Madrid. He joined Juventus for £7.5 million from Marseille in 2015 and had been under consideration by Arsenal scouts but was ultimately not the subject of a bid.

Southampton vice-chairman Les Reed described the acquisition of Lemina as indicative of the club’s ambition and was also critical of some of the wider transfer business across Europe. “Investing in a player of Mario’s quality and buying from a club like Juventus is a significant statement of intent from the club,” said Reed.

“In a volatile market with some extraordinary and inexplicable transfers taking place, we are determined to go about our work in a diligent and correct way. Mario will complement what is already an extremely strong group of midfield players in our squad.” Lemina said that he been especially impressed by what he called the Southampton “project” and he follows Jan Bednarek in becoming the club’s second signing following the appointment of new manager Mauricio Pellegrino.
