Benali’s pride on marathon journey

Show/hide article…

Just over a year after crossing the finish line at St Mary’s at the end of a second marathon challenge that pushed him to his physical and mental limits, Benali is still hungry for more with a target of £1,000,000 firmly in sight.

For now, a well-earned extended rest as he plots his next move.

“It seems a long time ago since I did the challenge so I haven’t been doing any serious running recently. I’m taking it easy at the moment even now, a year and a bit after crossing the line.

“I’m conscious that I should be doing a little bit more but for now I’m enjoying my running rather than seriously thinking that I need to get the miles and hours in my legs.”

Reflecting back on a fortnight in which he covered 1400 miles, running and cycling for up to 12 hours a day, understandably stirs mixed emotions for Benali but overriding them all is pride and gratitude for the generosity of those who made it all possible.

“Pleasurable would not be a word I would use… it was just an incredible experience,” he says smiling.

“It was a life-changing period and had a profound effect on me personally. It enabled me to realise what my limits were both physically and mentally.

“I’ve had some amazing people around me. Their support has enabled me to complete these challenges and they were with me every step of the way.”

From those who joined Franny on the road throughout his journey to those whose donations are funding trials and research here in Southampton, the support of the community continues to be a source of strength for the 48-year-old.

“Not just for the challenge itself, I had a fantastic support network on a day-to-day basis in the months leading up to it, a huge amount of work went in before it could happen.

“Knowing that I had that behind me made a huge a difference. It could have been a friend or a stranger just turning up for the challenge and either joining in for a few miles or just showing their support by coming out and cheering us on.

“That the donations were coming in behind the scenes whilst everything was going on, there has been a huge amount of generosity.”

A visit to the Southampton Cancer Research Centre last week was an opportunity not only to witness the fruits of the team’s labours but to deservedly celebrate its achievements so far.

Both give Benali the conviction that his work is far from over.

“The visit was very significant. The work that the researches are doing in the laboratories is incredible. There’s a new immunology centre being built at the moment which will be at the cutting edge of cancer research for trials and testing.

“Seeing the work that they do is inspiring. People’s diagnosis stories were a huge motivating factor for me so to see the work that goes on in the labs and to get an understanding of their ambitions for the future was remarkable."

So with over 2000 miles under his belt – accumulated in the space of five weeks in 2014 and 2016 - don’t be surprised to see Franny back in the saddle before long. A final lap in Benali’s Big Race would round off his staggering story in style.

“I’ll be getting the team together to see if we can come up with something which will capture people’s imaginations again. Maybe one more challenge will get us over the line and up to £1,000,000.

"Above all else, I hope that I have shown that with enough preparation and determination, absolutely anything is possible.”

study reveals dangerous months for Premier League managers to face sack

Show/hide article…

Slaven Bilic became the fourth Premier League manager to lose his job this season - but what month is the busiest for managerial casualties?

Frank de Boer was the first top-flight boss to face the sack this term in September, after just five games and 77 days in charge at Crystal Palace.

In October, Leicester axed Craig Shakespeare after 219 days at the helm, before Everton dismissed Ronald Koeman six days later.

In fact, all four clubs are among the most prolific of current top-flight teams for changing managers during the Premier League era.

Bilic was the first casualty this month, but pressure is mounting on Swansea’s Paul Clement, West Brom’s Tony Pulis and Southampton’s Mauricio Pellegrino.

We calculated the number of Premier League managerial departures since 1992, by month and excluding interim appointments, to reveal when managers should be most concerned about losing their jobs…

During the season, managers should be most concerned about their positions in the current month of November.

There have been 32 departures in the Premier League during that month, of which Tottenham, QPR and Portsmouth have each dismissed three.

Across the entire year, May is the most prolific month for sackings with 48 to date - but 29 of those occurred in the second half of the month.

As Shakespeare and Koeman discovered this term, October (25 departures) is the fourth-worst month for job security, behind December (31).

However, managers can take a sigh of relief if they make it through the festive period into New Year.

Only 17 bosses have lost their jobs in January, and the same number in February - nearly half the total from November or December.

Throughout the year, the safest month for a boss is during the pre-season month of July (six). During the season, the best months for job security are the season-opening month of August and the penultimate month of April (both 10).

June 1 is the most prolific day for managerial exits, with nine bosses leaving their respective clubs on that day over the last 25 years. During the season, the busiest day for clubs severing contracts early is October 25 (five) - joint with May 24.

Departures on that day in October include Tim Sherwood (Aston Villa), Harry Redknapp (Portsmouth), Juande Ramos, Martin Jol (both Tottenham) and Ray Harford (Blackburn) - although Redknapp had resigned to replace Ramos at Spurs and Harford quit after a poor start to the season.

So, Premier League managers feeling the heat should count down the days to New Year and hope for a prosperous spring.

However, Southampton’s most prolific month for dismissals is January and at Chelsea, behind May, it’s February - emphasising that no month is safe for a Premier League boss.

Benali and Fisher to sign copies of new book

Show/hide article…

Benali and 1976 FA Cup winner Fisher, who have more than 600 appearances for Saints between them, will be meeting supporters from 4pm at the launch of Days Like These.

The new book, from official club historian Duncan Holley, details fascinating trivia, strange coincidences, record-breaking feats and bizarre stories that have taken place over the past 132 years, from the club’s inception up to and including the 2016/17 season.

Most of the tales, some of which are very recent, have never been told or are long forgotten, while others have come to light while researching the club’s history.

There was the Saint who rescued Real Madrid and the day Southampton beat an international side in their own back-yard.

Why did the Irish stretcher bearers cause so much hilarity at a Saints game and what about the ref who officiated while sitting in the stands, not to mention the time a Saints forward was denied a goal because of a drain? And why did Ted Bates, Southampton’s manager, offer to join a local 60s pop band?

Intrigued? It’s all laid out on a day-by-day basis, illustrated by hundreds of previously unseen photos, and costs just £9.99.

Make sure to visit Westquay tomorrow for a special signed copy for yourself, or as an ideal Christmas gift.

Davis hopes 100th cap will be one to savour

Show/hide article…

The Saints skipper will bring up the milestone appearance when his country host Switzerland in the first leg of their qualification play-off at Windsor Park tomorrow.

But Davis says the pride he feels in his personal achievement will be dictated by the fortunes of the team over the coming days.

“It’s kind of crept up on me,” he said of the landmark.

“It has been a figure I’ve been aiming to get to for the last couple of years, but I haven’t given it too much thought and I don’t really want to give it too much thought going into this game.

“There’s so much riding on the two legs, so I just want to have my sole focus on what we’re trying to achieve.

“If I can reflect back on it after the two games and we’ve qualified for the World Cup, it’ll be a very special occasion to have achieved that landmark.”

Davis made his Northern Ireland debut way back in February 2005 and captained his country for the first time the following year.

Now 32, the midfielder led the Green and White Army to their first ever European Championships last year, and is now targeting a first World Cup appearance since 1986.

“Every time you get an opportunity to represent your country it’s a really proud moment,” he added.

“I’ve been really fortunate to have done that on a lot of occasions. I’m very proud of where I’m from and I’m very proud of the people here.

“Whenever you get the opportunity to represent them, you want to give your all and do your best.

“That’s what I’ve done every time I’ve pulled on the shirt.”

Lallana and Mane may be fit to face Saints

Show/hide article…

Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane could be in contention to face their former Saints teammates at Anfield in ten days’ time.

Mane played 77 minutes in Sunday’s 4-1 win over West Ham, his first appearance in a month after a hamstring injury, while Lallana is due to play a behind-closed-doors friendly next week as he steps up his preparation for his first game of the season after a thigh problem.

Mane is in the Senegalsquad for next Tuesday’s World Cup play off against South Africa

Phillipe Coutinho may also be available for Saints’ visit on November 18.

He has joined up with the Brazil squad, despite an adductor problem forcing him to miss the club’s last three matches.

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is looking forward to seeing the trio out on the pitch together again.

“I think we’ve been a bit unfortunate with the injuries and the suspensions,” he told liverpoolfc.com.

"If you have three of those kind of players injured at the same time then it’s obviously a tough thing to deal with, but at the same time the squad’s stayed calm underneath it.

“Hopefully after the international break they will be pushing the rest of the squad forward by adding in the goals and giving us a bigger platform to go from.”

Liverpool have performed not too badly in their absence, sitting fifth in the Premier League, just four points behind second-placed Manchester United, unbeaten in Europe and just one win away from qualification for the Champions League knockout stage.

But the key trio’s return would certainly provide a boost for manager Jurgen Klopp as he seeks to manage his squad during a period which will see the Reds play 13 games in 45 days, including eight in 29 days during December.

“If you get players like them coming back and being fresh after not playing much recently, that can give not only a boost to the team, but also a boost to them individually,” added Mignolet.

“They will be raring to go and very eager to get on the pitch and score the goals they’ve wanted to because they’ve been missing out, and I’m sure they will be ready for any battle that comes ahead of them when we come back after the international break.”
