Virgil van Dijk saga has not affected morale - Southampton star Nathan Redmond

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk was linked to a summer move to Liverpool all summer

And he insists players and fans have buried the hatchet with the defender and fully welcomed him back into the fold ahead of their clash with Liverpool.

Van Dijk is set to play at Anfield on November 18 for the first time since Saints blocked his attempts to force a summer move to Merseyside.

But Redmond said: “The speculation didn’t affect morale. I think we knew.

“Southampton have a lot of good players that a lot of clubs would be happy to take, so it’s no surprise that every single year there is interest in them.

“A few players left and some players came in. You welcome them into the group. You accept that this is going to be a guy that you see every day.

Steven Davis hits 100 Northern Ireland caps but is focused on Russia

Show/hide article…

Steven Davis insists that winning his 100th cap for Northern Ireland will be the last thing on his mind when he tries to guide his country towards the World Cup finals at Windsor Park on Thursday night.

Davis makes his landmark appearance in the first leg of Northern Ireland’s play-off against Switzerland, looking to gain an advantage ahead of Sunday’s return in Basle.

However the Northern Ireland captain will not allow sentiment to get in the way of the job in hand as Michael O’Neill’s side look to clinch a place at the finals for the first time in 32 years.

‘In all honesty, I’m not really counting caps,’ said the Southampton midfielder. ‘I don’t want anything to distract form the preparations for the game, and my preparation mentally for the game as well. It will be at the very back of my mind.

‘Obviously it’s a huge landmark and I’m very honoured to get to that number, but my focus is solely on the game.

‘Hopefully after the two games I can reflect on it and say that was a special time to achieve that goal. We can only do that by winning and progressing.’

Davis’s 100th cap comes a week after he collected an MBE from Prince William at Buckingham Palace.

He added: ‘It was a special day for my family and Prince William was very knowledgeable on the game. He talked about the play-offs and knew we were playing the Swiss. He said it would be very difficult but he wished us all the best.

‘The MBE and 100th cap are special achievements on a personal level but getting to a World Cup would be huge.’

Northern Ireland captain Steven Davis targets Swiss success as he closes in on 100th cap

Show/hide article…

Steven Davis met the Duke of Cambridge last week and will earn his 100th Northern Ireland cap on Thursday, but insists the World Cup play-off with Switzerland is more important than such personal landmarks.

Southampton midfielder Davis, 32, will become just the third Northern Irish centurion, following in the footsteps of Pat Jennings and Aaron Hughes when he leads Michael O’Neill’s team out at Windsor Park in the first leg against the Swiss.

It is another significant milestone for a player who recently received his MBE at Buckingham Palace, but Davis, one of his country’s most understated figures, would rather his 100th cap slid under the radar.

“In all honesty I’m not counting caps,” he said.

"I don’t want anything to distract from my or the team’s preparations for the game. That will be at the very back of my mind.

"It’s a huge landmark and I’m delighted to reach it, but my focus is solely on the game and hopefully after the play-offs I can look back and say it was a special achievement.

“It’s not my personality to be sentimental. It’s more a nice feeling for my family at the game. They can enjoy it more, but your focus automatically is on the game and you are in the zone at that point.”

As part of O’Neill’s meticulous preparations, Davis and his international colleagues have been given pamphlets of information on their Swiss opponents since meeting up in Belfast.

Yet his skipper had already been made somewhat aware of the size of the task by a member of the Royal Family.

“It was great meeting Prince William and a great experience,” Davis revealed.

"It’s something you are not used to, but it was great to be in the room with other great people receiving their awards. They have done very well in their own fields, whether it is police, military, ambulance or professors, and it was nice to experience that with my family.

“It was a special day for my family and Prince William was very knowledgeable on the game. He talked about the play-offs, knew we were playing the Swiss and said it would be very difficult, but he wished us all the best. It was a memorable day.”

Davis, who led his country at Euro 2016, their first major tournament in three decades, was there for his services to football and admitted he was moved by speaking to others being honoured in various fields.

“It is very humbling to be there and recognise what people have achieved in their lives,” he added.

"I got an award for doing something that I have loved and it’s not something I ever expected, but I’m very proud of. I’ll probably keep in touch with a few of the award winners.

“There was a guy from Glasgow who had lost his son and then went on a campaign to raise money for a teenage cancer fund, it was nice to share that experience.”

Radhi Jaïdi: Managing the game effectively

Show/hide article…

Needing a win to qualify, Saints were bravely in control having scored three well crafted goals, before Jimmy Floyd Hasslebank summoned some experience from his bench and ignited a miraculous home resurgence.

Edging the tie on penalties, the Cobblers secured victory by the narrowest of margins, and booked their place in the next round of the competition at the expense of the luckless Saints.

Reflecting on a tough night for his young charges, Jaïdi said: "I think obviously you can take different aspects, but considering young boys playing against men it is a learning curve.

"It’s an opportunity for the boys to see themselves playing against older players. A lot of good stuff in the first half, we started well, were positive, scored a goal and created a lot of chances.

"I told them at half time to keep doing the same thing and obviously manage the game because we were winning 1-0 and needed to keep the ball and be effective. That happened.

“The only frustrating bit is the last ten minutes or a little bit more where we conceded three goals. I think it’s a mixture of knowing what to do in certain situations and that comes with experience. The management side.”

Notwithstanding the disappointing result, Jaïdi wanted to praise 21-year-old Jake Hesketh, who continued to mark his return to competitive football with a standout performance and two expertly taken goals.

“Happy for Jake. He showed his strength,” Jaïdi continued. "He was a threat as always in between and behind them and he got two goals.

“We have been waiting for Jake for a long time and we now have him back, we need to make sure he is fit to play 90 minutes.”

Jaidi: Trophy exit must be “learning curve”

Show/hide article…

Radhi Jaidi says Saints’ young guns have to use their Checkatrade Trophy collapse against Northampton as a “learning curve.”

Saints’ under-21s appeared to be cruising to victory and progression to the knockout stages of the competition as they led 3-0 at the Sixfields Stadium.

However, they conceded three goals in the final 17 minutes of the game before being beaten 4-2 on penalties to crash out at the group stage.

Under-21s boss Jaidi said: “I think obviously you can take it to different aspects but considering young boys playing against men it is a learning curve.

“It’s an opportunity for the boys to see themselves playing against older players.

“I think throughout the game we show a really good performance. A lot of good stuff in the first half, we started well, were positive, scored a goal and created a lot of chances.

“I told them at half time to keep doing the same thing and obviously manage the game because we were winning 1-0 and needed to keep the ball and be effective in the final third when we got the chance. That happened.

“The only frustrating bit is the last ten minutes or a little bit more where we conceded three goals.

“The second goal we can do nothing about, but the first on the action leading into the goal or during the goal we could have done much better.

“This is the learning curve and what the boys need to learn when you go to senior and men’s football when you do a little mistake you pay straight away.”

As well as the experience of playing against a senior side, one of the major positives to come out of the night for Saints was the performance of Jake Hesketh.

Having only recently returned from six months out due to a serious hamstring injury, he showed a mixture of skill and composed finishing to score twice and put Mauricio Pellegrino on alert.

He also showed signs that he has improved his physical strength during his lay-off, which was the major issue during his previous first team appearances.

“Happy for Jake. He showed his strength,” reflected Jaidi.

“He was a threat as always in between and behind them and he got two goals.

“We have been waiting for Jake for a long time and we have him back and we need to make sure he is fit to play 90 minutes and then he is ready for the under-23s or the seniors.”

Saints legend backs Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

SAINTS legend Francis Benali insists under fire boss Mauricio Pellegrino will make a success of the St Mary’s job and remains confident of a good campaign.

The struggling manager saw his side booed off at the weekend after Saints’ miserable 1-0 defeat at home to Burnley.

That made it just two wins in seven games at home in the Premier League, 13 points from 11 games and it was clear the supporters had run out of patience after Saints continued to show few signs of progress under Pellegrino.

After a favourable opening fixture list, Saints now head in to a run of ten games which will see them face six of the Premier League’s big guns in November and December, starting at Liverpool a week Saturday.

“I’m happy with the appointment and think he’ll do a great job still,” said an optimistic Benali.

“Anyone would be honest to admit it would be nice to have more points on the board, given the way the fixture list has fallen,” he added.

“We’ve got some tough games coming up between now and Christmas. It’s a tough period looking at the fixtures.

“But I’m confident we’ve got the squad and the ability to pick points up and still do well and stay in the top half of the table.

“There are always games you look at you think ‘we could have done better here’ or ‘we should have won that’ but that’s football.

“It’s still a little bit work in progress but I’m confident we’ll have a good season still.”

Saints have struggled for goals this season, scoring just three goals from open play at St Mary’s in seven matches.

Benali believes that Saints “need to be braver” but is sure a couple of victories will give Saints the momentum and confidence they desperately need.

He said: “The guys have been struggling to score and that’s been a number of the players but it’s as a team. You defend as a team and attack as a team.

“We look comfortable in possession of the ball, we’re hard to break down as well but we just need to be braver.

“Confidence is a big thing as well, so as soon as we get a win or two under our belts we’ll kick on hopefully and start climbing the table even more.”
