Claude Puel warns Martin Caceres he must earn his place at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel insists he is under ‘no obligation’ to play big-money short-term signing Martin Caceres.

Saints signed free agent Caceres to plug the defensive gap left by Jose Fonte’s January move to West Ham and Virgil Van Dijk’s ankle injury.

The 29-year-old is yet to feature though, and could even turn out for the under-23s on Monday rather than face Watford on Saturday.

Caceres has signed a bumper contract until the end of the season but Saints manager Puel remains adamant the ex-Juventus centre back must earn his first-team chance.

‘There’s no pressure for me, no obligation with any player,’ said Puel. 'Young players, experienced players - all my players are important.

‘I try to put my best players on the pitch. For the first team for me it’s important to see good things.’

Saints face Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday in a desperately quiet month featuring just two fixtures.

After the Christmas feast comes a late-season famine to leave Southampton’s French boss Puel frustrated - but still intent on selecting his strongest line-up this weekend.

And if Caceres does not win favour at Watford then Puel admitted he may throw the new arrival into action for the under-23s.

‘He improves step by step in every training session,’ said Puel. 'I don’t know if he can start the next game; perhaps we can see him with an opportunity to play for the under-23s against Chelsea on Monday.

‘It’s perhaps a good opportunity for him to play a good official game against the good young players of Chelsea.’

While Puel has spent the first half of the campaign rotating his resources, he admitted that will now become more difficult.

‘From the start of the season it was important to give people game time,’ said Puel.

'Now we have two players competing for each place and that’s a good thing.

‘But of course now it’s difficult to keep everyone in a good concentration and a good spirit.’

Fraser Forster on his long-term aims at Southampton

Show/hide article…

You couldn’t make it up. Barely a week after that crusty nonsense in the FA Cup at Sutton, here was an England goalkeeper holding court at The Pie Factory.

Fraser Forster laughed at the delicious irony of the venue for his photoshoot in Manchester’s Media City, flinging himself on to a crash mat in the name of anti-perspirant.

“I only realised what this place was called when I drove into the car park,” grinned the Southampton keeper.

Forster has 337 senior club appearances and six England caps to his name, although Joe Hart’s enduring custody of the Three Lions’ No.1 shirt means that at international level, like his father Brian – a circuit judge – he has often been on the bench.

Given a fair wind, the 6ft 7in giant has at least a decade left to turn all that experience into medals – but at 28, Forster is already looking towards life after football.

A long lay-off with a knee injury proved to be the catalyst for him to enrol for a business management degree with the Open University.

“Adding another string to my bow was something I’ve always wanted to do during my career, and when I was out for 10 months it seemed like a good time to do it,” he said.

“So I worked hard to get fit, worked hard on my studies and I thought it would be a good thing if I could get it done as something to fall back on when I stop playing football.

“When I joined Newcastle at 17, I had already started my A-level courses and my education was obviously disrupted.

“There was only one day a week devoted to academic studies and it was a big thing for me to stay at school and come away with A levels in economics and psychology.

“I quite enjoyed economics, so a degree course in business management is probably a logical extension of that.”

And did the psychology exam paper include any questions about the old adage that you don’t have to be mad to be a goalkeeper, but it helps?

“Sadly, no – but they would have got a very interesting answer,” said Forster. “It would have run to several pages.”

Forster and Southampton return to the Premier League at Watford today after the heartbreak of last Sunday’s EFL Cup final defeat.

“As a team, we gave a fantastic account of ourselves – to come back from 2-0 down against Manchester United spoke volumes for our character and, on another day, we might have taken the glory,” he said.

“It wasn’t meant to be, but we can hold our heads up high after the way we performed and it was still a reminder of how far we have come as a club in the last seven or eight years.

“To win a trophy would have been a fitting reward for all the work that’s gone into lifting the club from League One and we’re not satisfied with where we are. The chairman and the owner want to keep moving forwards and it’s been a fantastic place to work since the day I signed.

“Anything’s achievable – we’ve had a taste of European football this season and reached a Wembley final, and as a club we pride ourselves on building for the future instead of a quick fix.

“We’ve set high standards over the last two or three years and now we have to keep aiming highs. Playing regularly in Europe would be a realistic target.”

Forster had already enjoyed Champions League nights with Celtic, including a win over Barcelona, before his £10million move to St Mary’s in 2014.

He was following a well-worn path, observing: “Myself, Victor Wanyama and Virgil van Dijk all came to Southampton after playing for Celtic and I don’t think a lot of people realise how big a club it is until you’ve been there.

“I wouldn’t have missed those Champions League nights and Old Firm games at Parkhead for anything. It gave me the chance to play against some of the best players in the world.

“Very few get the chance to play on such a big stage and even fewer cope with it. You are expected to win every game and it’s never easy because the opposition are desperate to beat you.”

Gabbiadini aiming to make Saints history at Watford

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbiadini will become the first Saints player to score in his first four games if he can keep his remarkable streak going at Watford today.

The Italian striker, a £14m January signing from Napoli, has been in red hot form since joining Saints, netting five goals in three games, including two at Wembley last time in the League Cup final.

Gabbiadini, who cannot even speak any English, will earn himself a unique place in Saints history if he can achieve the feat at Vicarge Road.

“I hope but he cannot score two goals every game,” joked Puel.

“It’s not just scoring. He’s a good player who plays with quality, we can find him between the lines, good combination between his partners. It’s most important.

“He has a good run and a good move on the boxes and very interesting with his quality and the quality of his runs.

“This is important for us because we find good clinical with him and it will be important for the squad and for all the strikers also as he can give good confidence for the squad.”

Though Gabbiadini’s career history didn’t suggest he would be this prolific, Puel expected him to do well.

“It’s not a surprise - I know his quality,” he insisted.

“But to find the goals so quickly, and good efficiency, perhaps.

“It was an interesting player for us, it was the profile I wanted to play, good technique, control, the pass, the run.

“We can play good football with him, and to score like that is fantastic.

“But not just for Manolo, it’s important for all the team too.

“We can have many games with quality on the pitch, with many chances.

“It’s important to find this, and his experience, his quality can give confidence for the other strikers and players around him.

“It’s important always to find a good solution of course.”

While much has been made of what a good signing Gabbiadini has been for Saints, Puel also believes that Saints have been good for Gabbiadini.

“Perhaps in another team he cannot make the same work. His profile is a good profile for Southampton this season,” said the Saints boss.

“He’s not a player we can give long balls in space and duels with the defenders. It is not possible to play this football with him.

“If we took Manolo it was because it was the good profile to play this game.”

The only other Saints player to have scored in his first three games for the club was loanee Henri Camara in 2004/05.
