Match Preview: Watford vs Saints

Show/hide article…

THE MATCH

Watford vs Southampton

Premier League

Vicarage Road

Saturday 4th March, 3pm GMT

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

It’s back to the Premier League for Southampton, after the disappointment of the EFL Cup final last Sunday.

A win could see Saints, who start the weekend in 13th, climb up four places in the table.

They will definitely jump up at least one spot with a victory, as Watford currently lie one point and one place above them.

TEAM NEWS

Watford: Defender Christian Kabasele, midfielders Nordin Amrabat and Ben Watson, and forward Mauro Zárate are all out injured. There are also doubts over the fitness of defender Daryl Janmaat and goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon, with both players still being assessed.

Southampton: Claude Puel has no fresh injury concerns for this game, meaning he could well name an unchanged starting line-up for the third game in succession.

FORM GUIDE

Watford’s last five:

West Ham United (h) D 1-1

Manchester United (a) L 0-2

Burnley (h) W 2-1

Arsenal (a) W 2-1

Millwall (a) L 0-1 (FA Cup)

Southampton’s last five:

Manchester United (n) L 2-3 (EFL Cup)

Sunderland (a) W 4-0

West Ham United (h) L 1-3

Swansea City (a) L 1-2

Arsenal (h) L 0-5 (FA Cup)

TOP PERFORMERS

Watford’s star man this season has been Troy Deeney, who has bagged himself eight goals and also assisted another three.

Top scorers: Troy Deeney (8), Étienne Capoue (5)

Most assists: José Holebas (4), Troy Deeney, Nordin Amrabat (3)

No doubt about who the man in form for Saints is. Manolo Gabbiadini might only have played three games for the club, but he is already in joint second place in the team’s scoring charts, with five goals. James Ward-Prowse’s cross for his first goal at Wembley took his assist total up to five.

Top scorers: Charlie Austin (9), Jay Rodriguez, Shane Long, Manolo Gabbiadini (5)

Most assists: James Ward-Prowse (5), Dušan Tadić (4)

PREVIOUS MEETINGS

All-time record:

Played: 47

Watford: 17

Draws: 10

Southampton: 20

Last four meetings:

August 2016: Southampton 1-1 Watford (Redmond)

DID YOU KNOW?

Saints are unbeaten in their last six league games against Watford.

In the last three Premier League games between the sides, Watford have attempted just two shots on target.

If Manolo Gabbiadini scores, he will become the first Saints player to score in his opening three Premier League appearances for the club.

Butterfield: Consistency is key

Show/hide article…

Saints travel north in a confident mood, having recorded consecutive 2-0 victories over Swansea City and Brighton in their two previous league outings.

“Off the back of two wins it’s a good opportunity for the boys to go three back-to-back,” said Butterfield.

“Once you have that momentum it is good for the group’s confidence to take into games, so hopefully we can do that and build on it now.

“In the previous two games we have shown professional performances, both individually and collectively, so now it’s just a matter of keeping that consistency.”

Saints are currently 9th in the southern division of the Under-18 Premier League table – two places above the Foxes in 11th.

Though despite the league standings, Butterfield knows his men will face a tough test on Saturday.

“They are a good team," he continued

“We are expecting them to be a big, physical team with the odd technical individual – so they will certainly be competitive.

“It is a strong team we are coming up against, but if we focus on ourselves then hopefully we can continue our performances of late.”

Puel: Concentration will be key

Show/hide article…

Saints play just two games this month – against Watford and Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday 19th, and Puel knows the importance of maintaining focus.

His side head into the Watford game sat 13th in the table, and with a fixture pile-up expected in April, he believes Saints must be ready to give a good response.

“It’s important for us to prepare for this game with a good concentration and a good focus, to maintain our play from the final,” he told southamptonfc.com.

“It’s important to continue this good work and just to stay with a good concentration about this game.

“After we have two weeks without a game, and this is very difficult.

“We would like to stay with a good feeling, because we know after this game we have a difficult calendar for concentration.

“We have two games this month and then in April we play every three days – it’s crazy, but it’s a good challenge.

“All of the squad must be ready to give a good answer.”

And what sort of test can his side expect from Watford this weekend? “They are a difficult team,” Puel added.

“They have good closing of the lines and they are physically very strong in their play.

“It’s always difficult to play against this team, because they have a good counter and like direct play.”

Stephens: It’s been a great experience

Show/hide article…

Jack Stephens says the last two months have represented an enormously important experience for him, but he does not plan to fully reflect on it all until the end of the season.

The 23-year-old made his Premier League debut in the January 2nd trip to Everton and, since then, he has become a regular part of the first-team.

Stephens played a key role in Saints’ victory at Liverpool in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final, while going on to impress on the grand stage, at Wembley, against Manchester United.

In total, Stephens has made ten appearances in the past two months, starting eight games and forming an encouraging partnership with Maya Yoshida at centre-half.

While he has taken a lot from it, Stephens is keen to make sure he is focused on what still lies ahead.

"It’s been a great experience for me to play in the last five or six games,” he said. “I’ve just got to make sure I keep trying to improve, keep trying to do my best for the team, and hopefully that will keep me in it.

“I’ve just got to keep learning. It’s been a great experience and looking back at the end of the season I’ll be proud about what I’ve done this year, but there’s still 13 league games to go and I want to be involved in as many of them as possible.

"There’s been some big games in the last few weeks and it’s been a massive honour to be part of that.

“I’ve just tried to keep my head down and keep focused to be honest, because it’s easy to start thinking about the big occasions and how big the game is, but I needed to just focus on what I was doing and make sure I was putting in a solid performance and hopefully I’ve done that.

"I need to just keep doing my best for the team, keep learning, and keep listening to the manager, the coaches and the experienced players around me and hopefully I can continue to develop.”

Expanding on the role some of the experienced members of the team have played in helping him, Stephens said: "They’ve all been excellent towards me since I’ve come into the team. They’ve all tried to help me and help me develop as a player.

“It’s been very good playing alongside Maya, and Cédric to the right of me. It’s been great, because they’re experienced players and it’s very good to learn off them.”

Ex-Saint Shaw back in Mourinho’s thoughts

Show/hide article…

Jose Mourinho had Wayne Rooney and ex-Saint Luke Shaw on his mind on Friday, with the Manchester United manager hoping his captain remains at Old Trafford next season and that the left-back proves his worth.

United will look to build on last week’s League Cup triumph against Saints when they return to Premier League matters against Bournemouth on Saturday lunchtime.

Neither Rooney or Shaw managed to get onto the pitch at Wembley but both are in the squad this weekend, with Mourinho clearly keen to get a point across about them in Friday’s press conference.

The smiling United boss joked that the England pair’s respective futures would dominate the agenda before a question had even been asked, then gave a four-minute monologue about them and last weekend’s EFL Cup win.

“So Wayne Rooney to Everton,” he said, referring to this week’s reports.

"I only can say that in the final with the result 2-2, with the team in difficulties, with the team possibly going to play 40 more minutes, Rooney was ready to go into the pitch.

"So he’s not the player that you play in the last minute or give a gift to be in the winning final, it is a player you trust, and you are going to play, probably your crucial change which is the last one.

"He is selected for tomorrow with possibilities to play obviously, start or be on the bench and come in.

"Since the moment he decided to stay and to help the team and to fight for Manchester United, he’s an important player for us.

“And I think by giving you these two details, I’m telling you all the talk about Everton for me makes nonsense.”

Everton have made little secret about their interest in bringing Rooney back to Goodison Park, while last week he rejected Chinese interest in favour of remaining at Old Trafford for the rest of the season.

Asked if his skipper would remain at United next season, Mourinho said: "What I got was a very strong message of ‘I don’t go anywhere’, especially China because it was the market that was open until the end of February.

"‘I don’t go anywhere, I want to fight and help this team in everything we are in’, so until the end of the season 100 per cent he is with us.

"Next season 100 per cent I would like him to be with us, but I don’t give you 100 per cent.

“I am the kind of manager that likes the players to be happy, not to be with me just because I want them with me.”

The same goes for top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic as speculation continues over his future, but Mourinho sees him “staying with us” despite the veteran striker fuelling speculation after his cup-winning brace.

Shaw was not even in the squad against his former club at Wembley, just days after Mourinho said he was now United’s fourth-choice left-back.

The Portuguese laid down the gauntlet to the 21-year-old and could now reward him with a first Premier League appearance since October, confirming he is in the squad to face Bournemouth.

“Luke Shaw, I have good news for you,” Mourinho said.

"He is selected for tomorrow so you won’t need to have the guys at The Lowry to take pictures of who is selected and make the list.

"He’s in the list for tomorrow, so one step up from not being selected, not being in the final even on the bench.

"Like Wayne he’s selected, so playing or being on the bench, he becomes again an option to us.

"Luke is working hard, he’s trying to improve.

“He improved by the physical point of view, I can say, for sure, with good dedication, good specific work and now obviously he needs some opportunities to feel alive, he needs opportunities to play.”

Former Saints boss refuses to discuss Barcelona job

Show/hide article…

FORMER Saints manager Ronald Koeman refused to talk about speculation linking him with the forthcoming vacancy at Barcelona.

The former Barca player and assistant manager is used to rumours of a return to the Nou Camp and was steering well clear of the subject at his press conference on Friday.

The Everton boss said: “Every word from my side about Barcelona is too much.”

One of the biggest jobs in world football is up for grabs this summer after current incumbent Luis Enrique announced this week that he will step down after three seasons in the role.

Another name to be linked with the job is Mauricio Pochettino, who Koeman will pit his wits against on Sunday when Everton travel to Tottenham.

The Argentinian, Koeman’s predecessor at former club Southampton, has turned Spurs from European hopefuls into Premier League title contenders.

Koeman said: "I think he’s managing a big club and I think he’s happy. In the past I think they talked about (Pochettino going to) Man United.

“I was the manager after Pochettino was managing Southampton and I think he’s doing a really good job at Tottenham.”

Koeman also declined to elaborate on a potential summer move for Wayne Rooney after saying earlier this week that he would welcome a return to Goodison Park for the striker.

“I don’t speak any more about Rooney,” said Koeman. “He’s a player of United, we will see what happens in the future.”

Everton’s nine-match unbeaten run in the league is likely to come under severe threat at White Hart Lane, with Spurs the closest challengers to Chelsea in the race for the title.

Pochettino’s side go into the clash on the back of a 4-0 win over Stoke last weekend, with all four goals scored in the first half.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes described Spurs’ attack as the most dangerous they have faced in the league, but Koeman is confident his side can do better.

He said: "That’s an easy answer if you lose 4-0. I saw the game. We will defend differently than they did.

"In the first half Stoke had two big chances to score a goal but you need to stop the strengths of Tottenham. They have really good offensive football in the team - you need to stop (Christian) Eriksen, you need to stop (Dele) Alli.

“Maybe they will play again with three at the back, maybe four defenders, a lot of questions, but they will have those types of questions also about how Everton will play.”

Koeman has no new injury worries and has been boosted by the return to training of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Muhamed Besic.

Calvert-Lewin could potentially come into contention for this weekend after two months out with an ankle injury but Besic needs more time having missed the whole season following knee surgery.

Fake news: Police say Saints scarf theft appeal is not genuine

Show/hide article…

A FAKE police appeal has been circulating online after some Saints fans said they were denied the chance of taking home their commemorative scarves from Sunday’s League Cup final.

Each seat should have had a special souvenir scarf placed on it for ticket holders.

However some fans said that a number of the scarves went missing before the game.

Angry fans then took to social media to voice their disappointment.

One Saints supporter who posted on social media said: "It is despicable - Saints football club fans are like a family.

"I had a right to that scarf, they were there for people who were at the game to mark the occasion.

"It is a bit petty but I wanted to know whether other fans had the same thing happen to them or see if someone had a spare one that they collected after the game.

"If the scarves had been left by fans that is a different story, but my scarf was taken from my seat before I had even arrived ten minutes before the game.

“I was disappointed that supposed supporters would do that would do that, I wouldn’t call them fans, they are low lives with no prospects.”

The fake police appeal then appeared claiming to have identified the culprit and includes his photograph and contact information, which the Daily Echo has removed to protect their identity.

The alleged offender admitted taking just four scarves.

He wrote on social media saying: “Took four, gave three to my nephews couldn’t get tickets, what’s the issue with that?”

But angered fans argue that people who were not at the event should not have scarves over people that were at Wembley stadium.

Almost 20 fans took a poll on facebook stating they did not have a scarf on their seat when they arrived.

Some fans are now referring to the incident as #scarfgate.

A spokesperson from the police said: "We had a surprise today after finding out that we were supposedly investigating the “theft of scarves at Southampton Football Club’s EFL Cup Final Match at Wembley.”

“We would like to assure anyone who has come across the false witness appeal, which includes a photograph of a man, on social media or other public forums that this is not genuine and is not being circulated by us.”

Southampton Football Club declined to comment when contacted by the Daily Echo.

Prediction Challenge: Martin Keown v Laura Williamson

Show/hide article…

Welcome to The Prediction Challenge.

It’s what millions of us do every day - predicting what the score will be in a Premier League match.

Whether it’s a thumping 4-0 home win, a sneaky three points on the road or a 0-0 bore draw, let’s be honest – we all think we can tip the outcome of the next game.

Well, now we’ve challenged Sportsmail’s experts to test their prediction power.

Each week, we’ll ask one of our star columnists to go head to head with one of our top team of reporters.

They will offer their prediction for each Premier League match - and explain why they went for that score.

Next up, it’s MARTIN KEOWN vs sports news editor LAURA WILLIAMSON… and don’t forget to tell us your predictions by leaving a comment below.

MARTIN KEOWN: A comfortable win for United. Bournemouth are in freefall and United will be invigorated by their League Cup triumph - Man Utd 2-0 Bournemouth

LAURA WILLIAMSON: Bournemouth desperately need to stop their slump in form but Old Trafford – against a Manchester United side on a 16-match unbeaten run in the Premier League – is not where they will do it - Man Utd 3-0 Bournemouth

MK: Burnley are yet to win on the road and the quality of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente may be too much for them - Swansea 2-1 Burnley

LW: Tricky one, this, but Burnley’s poor away form should mean Paul Clement’s side escape with a narrow win - Swansea 1-0 Burnley

MK - I remain suspicious of these Leicester players. They decide when they want to turn up — and do they think Hull at home is big enough? They should see it as their biggest game of the season - Leicester 1-1 Hull

LW: A home win could see Craig Shakespeare given the chance to lead the champions for the rest of the season. Expect Leicester’s players to perform better for their caretaker manager than they did at the end for the last bloke in charge - Leicester 2-1 Hull

MK: Stoke were thrashed by Tottenham but Middlesbrough have been slipping since Christmas. I expect a good, professional performance from Stoke to earn the three points - Stoke 1-0 Middlesbrough

LW: Boro have not won in the Premier League this year and Stoke should have enough to ensure that does not change - Stoke 1-0 Middlesbrough

MK: Southampton really impressed me in the League Cup final. They played some fantastic movement and Manolo Gabbiadini was superb. On the move he is as good as anybody in the penalty area but I would like to see more from him outside the box - Watford 1-2 Southampton

LW: Twelfth against 13th in the table and a point for each - Watford 1-1 Southampton

MK: I can see a dogged affair between two wily old foxes. West Brom are the more likely winners but I can see Palace getting something after their win over Middlesbrough - West Brom 1-1 Crystal Palace

LW: West Brom are enjoying a brilliant recent run of form and Tony Pulis’s side will have enough to inflict more misery on their manager’s old side - West Brom 2-0 Crystal Palace

MK: Liverpool have been on a bad run but Arsenal struggle against teams at the top - Liverpool 1-1 Arsenal

LW: Jurgen Klopp’s side can’t be as bad as they were at Leicester on Monday night, can they? Expect them to revert to type when playing some of the higher-ranked teams and win - Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal

MK: This is game of the weekend for me. Tottenham are oozing class and at home they have an energy about them that makes them invincible. It will not be easy against an in-form Everton but they should have enough to win - Tottenham 2-1 Everton

LW: Two strikers, in Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku, locked on 17 goals each, but it is Kane’s Tottenham side who will come out on top - Tottenham 2-0 Everton

KW: I still do not think Manchester City have given up on the title and they should get a result here - Sunderland 1-3 Manchester City

LW: Leicester City aside, Manchester City have done very well away from home against the sides in the bottom half of the table. Expect Sunderland to get similar treatment on Sunday - Sunderland 1-3 Manchester City

MK: I can see West Ham scoring if Andy Carroll plays but there is so much space at the London Stadium for Chelsea to exploit — as Manchester City have done twice this season - West Ham 1-3 Chelsea

LW: West Ham might have beaten Chelsea in the League Cup, but I can’t see a second defeat at the London Stadium this season for the Premier League leaders - West Ham 1-2 Chelsea

Watford wary of Saints reaction

Show/hide article…

Watford boss Walter Mazzarri is wary of how Saints will react to their dramatic League Cup final defeat against Manchester United on Sunday.

Claude Puel’s men, who Watford host in the Premier League on Saturday, battled back from two goals down against Manchester United to draw level at Wembley before Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s late header condemned them to a 3-2 defeat.

Asked what kind of response could be expected from Southampton when they return to action at Vicarage Road, Mazzarri, quoted by Watford’s official website, said: "Nobody can tell and nobody can know.

"For sure Southampton played a great game and maybe they are a bit disappointed because they could have gone at least to extra-time, or even won the cup.

"We will see on Saturday if they will react or not, but nobody can know this.

“We got confirmation that they are a very well-organised team and a very strong team.”

Mazzarri’s fellow Italian Manolo Gabbiadini scored both of Southampton’s goals in the final, making it five in three appearances for the forward since his January switch from Napoli.

The 25-year-old is a player Mazzarri is well aware of and rates highly.

“I know him very well - for many years I’ve been following him,” Mazzarri said.

"He used to be a Napoli and Sampdoria player (Mazzarri has managed both clubs) and this year he is just confirming what we all thought was going to happen.

“He is confirming that he is a great player.”

Twelfth-placed Watford will be without Mauro Zarate but could have Daryl Janmaat and Costel Pantilimon available for the clash with Southampton, who are one spot below the Hornets in the table.

Winger Zarate has been ruled out for the rest of the season by the knee injury that forced him off in the 1-1 draw with his former club West Ham last Saturday.

Defender Janmaat (groin), another to come off injured last weekend, is having his fitness checked ahead of potential involvement against the Saints, as is goalkeeper Pantilimon (ankle), who has been sidelined since the end of January.
