Butterfield: Players can be proud of Leicester performance

Show/hide article…

A Callum Slattery brace and single contributions from Will Smallbone and Tyreke Johnson completed a comfortable 4-2 victory, though Butterfield admits his men almost made it hard for themselves towards the end.

“Overall it was a very positive performance,” he started.

“Certainly in the first half with the wind behind us we had Leicester on the back foot and we were clinical in front of goal – we couldn’t have asked for any more.

“Then in the second half, against the wind and a team that were wounded and came out and had a go, we gave ourselves a bit of battle towards the end.”

Victory in Leicester means that the Saints youngsters have now recorded three consecutive victories in the Under-18 Premier League.

And Butterfield is keen to see that momentum continue into the final stages of the season.

“They put in performances to be proud of today,” he continued.

“There are players here playing for positions in the team and others trying to chase players down in the Under-23s, so it is positives all round.

“But now, looking towards the split in the leagues, we are hopeful we can make it four out of four and keep the momentum going.”

Clinical display delights Puel

Show/hide article…

Saints triumphed 4-3 at Vicarage Road, with Nathan Redmond bagging two, while Dušan Tadić got one and Manolo Gabbiadini continued his sensational start to life at the club with a strike of his own.

It means Puel’s side have scored eight goals in their last two Premier League matches – both away from home – while they’ve netted ten in their last three.

“All these goals will give confidence for the team and we know we can come back in games if we push, and this is important for the confidence,” said Puel.

"This gives confidence to all the players, but also the strikers. We saw Nathan, who had success. I am very happy for him and the team.

“I am satisfied with this game and satisfied also with how clinical we were on the pitch.”

While Gabbiadini continues to grab headlines, with six goals in his first four Southampton games, Puel says it is about more than just him.

“It’s important also that other players can score,” said the Saints boss. "It’s not just Gabbiadini.

“It was difficult for him today, because he played against three centre-backs, but he scored his goal and it’s important, because he feels the play, he feels the good way of the ball and it’s important for the team to find a good clinical edge.”

Claude Puel pleased with Southampton response to EFL Cup final defeat

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel was pleased to see Southampton bounce back from their EFL Cup final disappointment with a 4-3 win at Watford on Saturday.

Nathan Redmond’s double helped Southampton edge past Watford in a game which also saw Manolo Gabbiadini net his sixth goal in four games since joining from Napoli.

It was a good response from Southampton following the heartache of a 3-2 Wembley defeat to Manchester United last Sunday.

And while Puel stopped short of calling it perfect, the Saints boss was impressed with their display after a difficult week.

“Perfect? I don’t know. I’m not happy for their third goal. We can defend better but of course it’s a good result after a big disappointment with the final,” Puel told Sky Sports after the match.

"It was important to come back with a good spirit and attitude and I am happy for the players and the fans.

"We knew it was important to give a good answer, and the performance was good after three or four difficult days for us.

"We went down after a few minutes and it was difficult to make a start, but we did well to come back.

“We tried to play football and make it difficult for them. Our goals were fantastic, it was good football and I like this. It’s important to continue this work.”

Southampton had fallen behind to an early Troy Deeney goal, but Dusan Tadic and Redmond strikes put them 2-1 up at the break.

Stefano Okaka then levelled for Watford but quick-fire goals from Redmond and Gabbiadini gave Southampton a lead which the hosts could not claw back despite Abdoulaye Doucoure’s late consolation.

The win lifts Southampton into the top half of the table, but Puel did speak of his frustration with the fixtures schedule with just one league game coming up before April.

“It’s difficult to see the future. This result today was very important. A great result away which puts us in a good position in the table,” Puel added.

“I am happy for this and we will see if we can continue this work. After two weeks we play Tottenham and then there’s another two weeks with an international break which makes it difficult.”

Watford 3-4 Southampton: Puel hails Saints character

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel praised the character of his side as they bounced back from their Wembley heartache with a thrilling 4-3 win at Watford.

Saints showed great spirit to rally after the EFL Cup final defeat and win in remarkable style at Vicarage Road.

Manolo Gabbiadini made history by becoming the only player to score in his first four games for Saints, while Nathan Redmond netted twice and Dusan Tadic grabbed the other.

It was the second away league game in a row in which Saints have scored four times.

A delighted Puel said: “I think we stayed on the good character we showed against Manchester United and after this great game in the final we keep the capacity and the ability to come back in the Premier League is strong I think.

“I am happy with all my players of course because it was a difficult game to prepare after the final and the disappointment and it was difficult because we played a difficult team with long balls, second balls, counter attack.

“It was difficult to defend and we took a goal after three minutes at the start of the game and this was particular and I think we stayed in our plan to play good football after a good recovery to try good action and good clinical.

“I think we come back normally on the game and after 2-1 it was I think a good control of the game with the ability for the opponent but we know it is always difficult against this team with direct play and the second ball is always possible.

“I liked of course the character to come back after the kick-off to score a third goal and it was fantastic and now it is important to be clear about this character and quality on the pitch.”
