Premier League results: Leicester City continue revival under Craig Shakespeare, Swansea seal late win and MORE

Show/hide article…

Leicester continued their mini revival under Craig Shakespeare as they came from behind to beat Hull City 3-1 at the King Power.

The Foxes have now recorded back-to-back wins since Claudio Ranieri’s departure and it only strengthens Shakespeare’s chances of getting the gig on a full-time basis.

The 53-year-old, who was part of Ranieri’s title-winning coaching team, is set to meet City chiefs next week and he will have a case to make.

It did not look so simple when Sam Clucas opened the scoring on 14 minutes to net his first goal in the top flight.

Christian Fuchs was the surprise scorer as Leicester levelled 13 minutes later after good link-up player between the Austrian and Jamie Vardy.

Riyad Mahrez looked like the star player of last season when he twisted and turned on the edge of the box to net the match-winner in the second half with a low effort from 20 yards. The three points were then confirmed in the final minute as January signing Wilfred Ndidi headed home.

The Clarets’ away form has been their downfall in the Premier League this season and it looked like Andre Gray’s double would help them to a hard-earned point before the Spanish forward headed home in the second minute of added time.

The victory sends Paul Clement’s side five points clear of the relegation zone.

Spain striker Llorente - who has scored precious goals this season against Liverpool and Crystal Palace - headed home a 90th-minute winner to ease Swansea’s relegation fears.

The contest will unfortunately be remembered for the 20th-minute penalty Burnley were awarded when George Boyd’s corner escaped everyone before striking the arm of Clarets striker Sam Vokes.

Television replays showed Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson appealing for handball against Vokes, and there did not appear to be any other offence in a congested six-yard box. But Taylor incensed Swansea players by pointing to the spot and Gray’s straight-down-the-middle kick cancelled out Llorente’s 12th-minute header.

Gray put Burnley ahead just after the hour mark with his eighth league goal of the season before full-back Olsson scored for the second successive home game to get Swansea back in the game and set up a grandstand finish which allowed Llorente to grab the late winner.

Marko Arnautovic’s first-half double helped Stoke bounce back from their recent hammering to beat Middlesbrough at the bet365 Stadium.

Mark Hughes’ men were on the wrong side of a 4-0 scoreline last time out at Tottenham as Harry Kane netted a hat-trick during a dismal Stoke showing at White Hart Lane.

Boro fell behind in the 29th minute via a fine strike from Arnautovic, who then added a close-range finish three minutes before half-time.

The Teesside outfit, who are winless in 10 league matches and have failed to score in their last four, are down a place to 18th in the table, with Crystal Palace moving up to 17th and three points clear of them with a 2-0 win at West Brom.

Boro’s major problem is hitting the back of the net - they are the lowest scorers in the division, with a tally of just 19 for the season so far. It was hardly a surprise to hear some booing at the final whistle from the travelling fans, who will be seriously fearful about their team’s predicament.

Southampton showed no signs of a League Cup final hangover as they battled to a 4-3 victory at Watford.

Claude Puel’s side were unfortunate to be beaten by Manchester United at Wembley last week and they took their performance to Vicarage Road by racing into a 4-1 lead. The Hornets scored a third in the final moments but it was too little, too late.

Nathan Redmond scored twice and Manolo Gabbiadini struck a sixth goal in four games while Troy Deeney volleyed in for his 100th league goal for Watford.

Dusan Tadic equalised and Redmond gave the visitors a deserved half-time lead, only for Stefano Okaka to level 11 minutes from time.

Gabbiadini pounced to punish Heurelho Gomes’ error and Redmond struck a fine fourth to give the visitors a win that their pace and movement warranted. There was a nervy conclusion, though, as Watford substitute Abdoulaye Doucoure netted in stoppage time.

Sam Allardyce’s bid to steer Crystal Palace clear of relegation took another boost when his side impressively beat West Brom 2-0 at the Hawthorns.

Second-half goals from Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend lit up a poor Premier League encounter at The Hawthorns. The former’s goal was taken brilliantly when he opened the scoring after a neat piece of skill on 55 minutes.

Townsend wrapped up victory, Palace’s second in successive games, with a superb solo effort six minutes from time. The result lifted Palace out of the bottom three and indicated Sam Allardyce’s work is now starting to bear fruit after a frustrating start with the Eagles.

Watford 3-4 Southampton: Nathan Redmond brace wins it for Claude Puel

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbiadini continued his exceptional scoring run since joining Southampton in a victory against Watford that helped put their EFL Cup final upset behind them.

Although manager Claude Puel was impressed with his players’ character at recovering from conceding that late Zlatan Ibrahimovic winner, he could not resist a dig that the Italian £14.6million signing from Napoli, whose strike was a sixth official goal in four games, had one wrongly ruled out against Manchester United that cost them the cup.

‘He scored seven goals — with three goals against Manchester United,’ Southampton’s manager said, with a cheeky grin.

‘It was difficult for him because he played against three centre-backs. The next time it might be four centre-backs! But he continues to score.’

Southampton stored up the pain of that defeat and unleashed it upon their opponents in a Premier League match equally as enthralling as the final.

They were behind early on; ahead by half-time; the match was level with seven minutes reaming until Gabbiadini put them back and Nathan Redmond sealed the result with a few minutes remaining. Just as well, given substitute Abdoulaye Doucoure stuck a stoppage-time consolation for Watford.

Take a breath, Southampton fans. They have barely had a time to pause this season, competing in the Europa League in the first half of the campaign while battling towards the EFL Cup final.

‘After this great final the capacity and ability to come back into the Premier League and perform like that is strong,’ Puel said.

‘I’m happy for my players because it was a difficult game after the final disappointment.’

They had almost a week to recover from last Sunday but against Watford they were sluggish to react to a loose ball inside the box and were behind in the fourth minute as Troy Deeney expertly guided a bouncing ball with his left boot into the far left of goal amid a crowd of bodies.

It was his 100th goal in league competition — including play-offs — and moved him alongside Cliff Hilton on 105 as the club’s joint-fourth highest scorer.

Puel named an unchanged starting line-up for the third successive match having never once named the same team for two matches in a row for the entirety of the season. Their cohesion began to show as the first half progressed and they equalised on 28 minutes.

Redmond was tackled in the box but the ball rolled back to Dusan Tadic who buried his shot into the vacant space to the right of goal.

On the stroke of half-time Southampton took the lead with an intricate move. Redmond started it with a charging dribble from the halfway line, he passed to Ward-Prowse who turned sharply and rolled the ball to Tadic on the right. The Serbian cut the ball back into the path of Redmond who had continued his run and a he struck the ball into the bottom left corner.

Southampton should’ve sealed the result but Heurelho Gomes saved well from Tadic and Maya Yoshida, so the game descended into chaos in the final 11 minutes. Stefano Okaka levelled, finishing Isaac Success’s low ball from the left via a post.

Four minutes later, Sofiane Boufal’s long shot was spilled awfully by Gomes and Gabbiadini tapped in, before Redmond cut in from the left and drilled a shot past the Watford keeper. Doucoure added a third for Watford late on and one wondered if anything more could happen in this match, but Southampton held out.

Southampton forget Wembley heartache in Watford win

Show/hide article…

The celebrations said it all. As Manolo Gabbiadini pounced on an error by Watford’s goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes and tapped in Southampton’s third goal, the roar went up from the corner of red and white shirts in the ground.

After the heartache of Wembley, this was an important victory for Southampton; the pick-me-up that their players and travelling supporters craved.

By the end of this game, there was clear daylight between Southampton and Watford and nobody could dispute that the right team triumphed.

On the final whistle, every Saints player went over to applaud their fans and the appreciation was reciprocated. The pain of Wembley defeat has only made this football club stronger.

This was a topsy-turvy afternoon and in truth, the beginning to this game did not suggest a happy ending would be in store for Southampton.

The visitors conceded early here and the softness of Troy Deeney’s opener inside only three minutes suggested the visiting side might be suffering a hangover from last week’s EFL Cup final defeat by Manchester United.

Yet just as they did last week, Southampton hit back with a level of vigour and skill that seemed to startle their opponents. Watford could not cope with the vibrancy of Southampton’s forward play, as Oriol Romeu picked holes in the midfield and Dusan Tadic and Nathan Redmond carved the home defence apart.

Southampton demonstrated their character and quality once more, recovering from a 1-0 deficit to go 2-1 ahead by half-time and then responding to Watford’s 79th minute equaliser to score two more goals and eventually triumph 4-3.

As they did against Manchester United, Southampton played with great distinction, weaving pretty patterns with their play and Nathan Redmond scored two picturebook goals.

In January signing Gabbiadini, Southampton have the perfect focal point. The Italian forrward produced another masterclass in darting runs and shrewd approach play.

Gabbiadini scored his sixth goal in four appearances since joining Southampton and that is already more than the five he struck in 19 games for Napoli in the first half of the campaign.

He has provided Puel’s team with renewed threat attack and he is enjoying the quality of his team-mates deliveries from out wide - an all too rarely seen aspect of modern day Premier League attacking.

Most importantly, this victory lifted Southampton into the top half of the table and confirmed that their season would be ending on an upwards trajectory. There will be no stumbling and stuttering or sinking into the danger zone.

For Puel, there were many reasons for comfort. After more summer and winter sales over the past year, allied with the injury to their best defender Virgil van Dijk, they have adapted once more and developed into one of the leagues most watchable attacking units.

Next up is a visit to Tottenham and a reunion with former manager Mauricio Pochettino. On this evidence, the Argentine will find cause for real concern.

Southampton hold on against Watford in Vicarage Road thriller

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbiadini continued his hot scoring streak as Southampton bounced back from last week’s Wembley disappointment to see off Watford in a flurry of late goals.

The £14million January signing from Napoli became the first Saints player to have scored in all of his first four games and his goal in this one - his side’s crucial third - took his tally to six.

The impressive Nathan Redmond supplied two, with Dusan Tadic also on the scoresheet to deny Watford, who had taken an early lead through Troy Deeney and looked on course for at least a point when Stefano Okaka made it 2-2 with 11 minutes remaining.

Saints had spent the week nursing the hurt served up by Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s late EFL Cup final winner for Manchester United on an occasion when Gabbiadini scored twice.

Southampton manager Claude Puel hailed the Italian - who he insisted actually had seven goals in English football to his name as he had another wrongly ruled out for offside at Wembley.

“It was difficult for him today because he played against three centre backs,” he said. "But he continues to score and its important. He has scored seven goals - he scored three goals against Manchester - and of course it’s fantastic work.

"We stayed with the good character we showed against Manchester United, and showed the capacity to come back in the Premier League.

“It was a difficult to prepare after the final, and after the disappointment. But after we conceded an early goal we stuck to our plan to play good football.”

The early goal belonged to Deeney, who had scored after just three minutes in Watford’s previous game, a 1-1 draw at home to West Ham. He repeated the trick almost to the second in this one with a first time effort from Okaka’s lay-off that curled beyond Saints keeper Fraser Forster.

That fine left-footed strike brought the Watford captain’s goal tally for the season to nine, five of which had arrived in his seven most recent games. It also made him the club’s joint fourth highest goalscorer with 105, level with Cliff Holton, who had two spells as a lower league Hornet between 1958 and 1966.

Southampton’s equaliser, arriving in the 28th minute through Tadic, was the result of poor defending with a tinge of controversy added. Tadic, prompted by Redmond’s flick, surged forward but was stopped by a wall of yellow that somehow recycled the ball straight back to him as Redmond waded in. The Serb launched a low shot into the far corner that bypassed Redmond, stuck in an offside position but not directly in the goalkeeper’s vision.

Gabbiadini was booked for going in high on Valon Behrami and Gomes soon had to rush out of his box to head away to stop the Italian profiting from a one-two with Tadic. The Brazilian then had to react to stop Tadic squeezing in another from a tight angle.

There was just enough time before the break for Redmond to start and finish a fine move to put Saints ahead. The former Norwich man used his pace to leave Behrami trailing and was in the right place on the right of the box to fire across Gomes and in off a post after Tadic, set up by Ward-Prowse, had pulled the ball back. It was deserved.

Saints continued where they had left off after the break and Gomes pulled off a super tip over to deny Tadic from a corner. The Brazilian then came up with a fine reflex parry to deny Maya Yoshida, who had gone up for a free-kick.

With 20 minutes remaining, Watford sent on Isaac Success, and after Forster had blocked Okaka’s shot with his legs, it was the substitute who set up the Italian for a 79th minute leveller that was smashed past the England goalkeeper from seven yards out.

The joy was shortlived however as Gomes could not hold on to a drive by substitute Sofiane Boufal and Gabbiadini, marginally onside, tucked away the rebound.

Redmond made sure of victory with his second two minutes later, cutting inside from the left to unleash a rising drive that Gomes perhaps should have saved.

Substitute Abdoulaye Doucoure bundled in a Watford third in stoppage-time but it was only a consolation.

Watford manager Walter Mazzarri added: "I want to underline the fact that we never gave up and managed to score in the last minute to make it 4-3 and this is something very positive.

“But I don’t want it in the head of my players that they are already safe from relegation. No game in the Premier League is written, anything can happen. We need to learn how to close out games.”

Watford 3-4 Southampton: Nathan Redmond’s double helps Saints past Hornets

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond scored twice as Southampton squeezed past Watford 4-3 in an entertaining encounter at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

Troy Deeney volleyed Watford into an early lead before goals from Dusan Tadic and Redmond put Southampton 2-1 up at half-time.

Stefano Okaka drew the hosts level in the 79th minute before Manolo Gabbiadini pounced on a Heurelho Gomes error four minutes later.

Redmond then scored his second to put the game beyond Watford, despite Abdoulaye Doucoure’s goal in the final minute.

Victory lifts Southampton into the top half of the Premier League table, while Watford move down to 13th.

It was the perfect start for the hosts as Deeney flicked on Younes Kaboul’s long throw for Okaka before latching onto the return ball with a finely-taken volley into the far corner after four minutes.

Southampton grew into the game after going a goal down and Gomes was forced to tip Tadic’s effort round the post before getting down low to deny Gabbiadini.

An end-to-end half then saw Okaka spurn two headers from Jose Holebas’ crosses before Etienne Capoue’s long-distance effort trickled narrowly wide of the mark.

The Saints were level in the 28th-minute through Tadic, who started the attack before latching onto the loose ball inside the box and slotting into the bottom corner.

In the second minute of added time the visitors went ahead following a fine team move, with Redmond rounding it off from 12 yards out.

After the break, Gomes came to the rescue twice to keep Watford’s hopes alive, first producing a flying save to tip away Tadic’s volley before getting down low to deny Maya Yoshida’s close-range effort.

Watford equalised with just over 10 minutes to go when Okaka turned the ball home following Isaac Success’ low cross.

The score was level for just four minutes however, as Gomes spilled a Sofiane Boufal effort, with Gabbiadini poking the ball home.

Redmond then found himself in acres of space down the left, and with Sebastian Prodl backing away, his effort proved too strong for Gomes.

There was still time for a Doucoure consolation, but the Saints held on to provide the perfect tonic for their supporters following last weekend’s heartache in the EFL Cup final.

Watford 3 Southampton 4: Nathan Redmond brace sees Saints home in seven-goal thriller

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbiadini continued his thunderous introduction to English football, scoring his sixth goal in four games, to help Claude Puel’s side put their EFL Cup Final defeat behind them.

Southampton again looked rocky in defence but were exceptional going forward and caused Walter Mazzarri’s sluggish side all sorts of problems as they climbed back into the top half of the Premier League.

The Hornet’s had started well with Troy Deeney’s 105th Watford goal coming after only four minutes. Younes Kaboul lobbed a throw-in to Stefano Okaka who touched the ball back for Deeney to hook it first time into the far corner.

The frailties in Saints’ defence have been abundantly clear since Virgil Van Dijk limped off in the home victory over Leicester in January.

But with the ball they are easy on the eye and soon settled into their stride after conceding with James Ward-Prowse, Gabbiadini and Nathan Redmond all having promising efforts at goal.

5 things we learned from Watford 3-4 Southampton

Show/hide article…

Hangovers are normally every shade of green, but Southampton blew away the cobwebs from their Wembley heartbreak with a stylish fightback at Vicarage Road.

Manolo Gabbiadini’s sixth goal in four games, six minutes from time, did more for their self-esteem than any plink-plink fizz.

And Nathan Redmond’s second goal of the match two minutes later, which also looked to flummox Gomes, settled all arguments.

Southampton won’t go down and nor should Watford – although the Hornets were hugely unconvincing at the back on an afternoon they would prefer to forget.

Saints had barely finished fielding all the commiserations from their undeserved League Cup final defeat when they fell behind after four minutes.

Troy Deeney, set up by Stefano Okaka’s lay-off, fired an instinctive volley left-footed beyond Fraser Forster from 12 yards, his fourth goal in five games and his 105th for Watford in seven years.

Nathan Redmond fired just wide and Heurelho Gomes smothered Manolo Gabbiadini’s effort from close range as Saints rallied, and after 28 minutes they were level.

Dusan Tadic tucked away the loose ball from a feeble Miguel Britos clearance, and although Watford had a case for claiming offside – Redmond was in close proximity to Gomes, although he did not impede his dive – referee Jon Moss was entertaining no protests.

Redmond was a thorn in Watford’s side again in first-half stoppage time, starting and finishing the move which put Southampton in front, firing his shot in off the far post – his third goal in his last three games against the Hornets.

Watford made little headway until 10 minutes from time, when Okaka’s first-time finish kissed the post on its way after a fiercely-driven centre from substitute Isaac Success.

But in the last six minutes Gabbiadni pounced when Gomes spilled Sofiane Boufal’s routine shot and then Redmond was afforded generous room to make the points safe.

Sub Abdoulaye Doucoure bundled in his first goal for Watford in added time, but the home side’s defensive apocalypse was the decisive factor.

Here are five things we learned.

Gareth Southgate has no shortage of nimble forwards at his disposal when he picks his squad for the World Cup qualifier against Lithuania and warm-up friendly in Germany.

But England are not blessed with a surfeit of top-quality wingers, and Nathan Redmond has long been overdue a call-up.

Quick, mobile, elusive and still only 22, he also has an eye for goal – especially against Watford. He has now hit the bullseye in each of his last three meetings with the Hornets.

They have too much ground to make the Europa League next season, but Saints hve unearthed a diamond in Manolo Gabbiadini and this squad has top-seven potential.

First it was Mauricio Pochettino, then Ronald Koeman; now Claude Puel has grasped the secret of improving a team regularly shorn of its best players and managers.

At this stage of the season, it is ludicrous that a Premier League club should have only two fixtures in March and six, possibly seven, in the next 32 days.

Whether it’s international breaks, rearranged games to suit live TV or blank weekends because of FA Cup elimination, the Premier League is a stop-start nonsense.

Watford played three games in August, September, October and November, five in December, five in January and three in February.

At a pivotal stage in the campaign, it is inexcusable that their season should virtually grind to a halt.

Troy Deeney’s ninth goal of the season, an instinctive volley, was his 105th in all competitions for Watford.

It drew him level at No.4 in the club’s all-time list with Cliff Holton, whose last goal in this postcode was more than half a century ago.

In 2010, Sir Elton John played a gig at Vicarage Road to raise transfer funds for his beloved Hornets – and then-manager Malky Mackay spent the £500,000 proceeds on signing Deeney.

Pedantic, as you would expect from a school headmaster, referee Jon Moss won few friends among the home support.

On balance, he was right to let Dusan Tadic’s equaliser stand – despite Watford having a borderline case for offside.

But it was a triumph of twisted logic when Moss awarded Stefano Okaka a yellow card for daring to point out that Jack Stephens was not just pulling his shirt, but attempting to remove it over his head.

Redmond revels in Watford display

Show/hide article…

Saints secured back-to-back Premier League victories with a 4-3 win as goals from Redmond, Dušan Tadić and Manolo Gabbiadini saw them climb into the top ten.

And Redmond said the clinical display was the perfect tonic following their disappointment in the EFL Cup final at Wembley.

“I’m delighted to get the three points first and foremost as it was important we bounced back after the Wembley defeat,” he reflected.

“The support from Wembley from the fans was there again today and it carried through to the boys.

“The boys were strong today and we had another challenge which was to climb up the table and get a win and we’ve done that.”

Troy Deeney’s strike inside the opening five minutes had put the hosts ahead, but the Birmingham-born winger always felt Claude Puel’s men were emerge victorious.

“We were a bit lacklustre for all three goals but we managed to sort it out. There wasn’t a time in the game where I was worried we would lose the game.

“I thought if we played the right football and opened them up as we did then we’d have too much for them.”

Watford 3 Southampton 4: Gabbiadini on song as Saints edge thriller

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond scored twice and Manolo Gabbiadini struck a sixth goal in four games as Southampton moved on from their Wembley woe with a 4-3 win at Watford.

EFL Cup finalists Southampton, beaten by Manchester United last Sunday, were trailing after four minutes as Troy Deeney volleyed in for his 100th league goal for Watford.

Saints’ previous Premier League game was the 4-0 win at Sunderland on February 11 and their next is at Tottenham on March 19, so Claude Puel was keen for a victory and got it as his side climbed to 10th place.

It was a Zlatan Ibrahimovic goal three minutes from time which defeated Saints at Wembley.

And little more than three minutes into their only Premier League game in 36 days two Younes Kaboul long throw-ins caused chaos.

From the second, Okaka controlled the ball with his back to goal and laid it off for Deeney to leap and execute a side-footed finish across goal.

It was the Watford skipper’s ninth goal of the season and brought up a century of league goals for the club.

Saints responded. James Ward-Prowse and Gabbiadini were denied by Gomes as the visitors stretched Watford’s newly-deployed back three.

Next Tadic ran at them and lost the ball, but Kaboul and Miguel Britos got in a muddle as they attempted to clear. The ball broke for Tadic, who fired low across goal into the bottom corner.

Redmond started the move which finished with his first Premier League goal since October.

He ran down the middle, fed Ward-Prowse who played it for Tadic on the right. Tadic pulled the ball back and Redmond finished well across goal.

Watford were also troubled at set-pieces. Gomes tipped over a Tadic volley after Watford cleared a corner only to the edge of the area.

And Gomes saved well to deny Maya Yoshida as the defender stretched to attempt to turn in a Tadic free-kick from wide on the left.

Fraser Forster saved with his feet to deny Okaka and Deeney fired wide soon afterwards.

And Watford levelled when substitute Isaac Success ran at Cedric Soares and crossed to the near post where Okaka tucked in.

Parity was short lived. Saints substitute Sofiane Boufal’s shot from 25 yards bounced in front of Gomes, who did not claim it and Gabbiadini reacted first to score.

Redmond cut in from the left and ran at a back-pedalling Prodl. The winger unleashed a vicious shot which beat Gomes.

Boufal shot narrowly wide after putting the ball through Kaboul’s legs before Doucoure tapped in from a yard out, but time ran out for Watford as Saints celebrated.

Puel delighted with Saints’ character

Show/hide article…

Southampton prevailed 4-3 at Vicarage Road, recovering from conceding the first goal and also from being pegged back at 2-2 in the second half to make it back-to-back victories in the Premier League.

Puel felt it was a tremendous show of character from his players, less than a week on after their cruel 3-2 defeat against Manchester United, at Wembley.

“I’m happy for the players and for the fans,” said the Saints boss. "It was important to give a good answer after the final.

"We played a fantastic game against Manchester United, and it was important to come back in the Premier League.

"We knew it would be a difficult game to prepare for, after the disappointment, and a difficult game because of the direct play, long balls and second balls. It’s important always to keep the good concentration to defend that.

"You see this in the game, after three minutes, where we took a goal. It was difficult, but we stayed in our plans and to play good football, with good passes. At 2-1 we had good control of the game.

“I liked our performance and character to come back and score a third goal. We stayed with this feeling, with the same spirit and attitude as we showed against Manchester United, and it was important that we kept this.”

Watford 3-4 Southampton: Gabbiadini makes history as Saints bounce back from Wembley heartbreak

Show/hide article…

MANOLO Gabbiadini rewrote the Saints history books as Claude Puel’s side bounced back from their Wembley heartbreak with a memorable win at Watford.

The Italian striker scored his sixth goal since signing to become the first Saints player to net in his first four games for the club.

Gabbiadini put Saints 3-2 up in the 83rd minute and Nathan Redmond’s second shortly afterwards proved to be the winner of this absorbing seven-goal thriller.

But Dusan Tadic equalised in the 28th minute and in first half-injury time Redmond ended a flowing Saints move that he began by drilling his first of the afternoon into the far corner.

The helter-skelter second half was a far cry from the goalless draw in the corresponding game of last season.

Saints responded to Okaka’s equaliser with a double whammy before Watford netted a injury-time consolation.

Saints manager Claude Puel named an unchanged side for the third successive match, following the 4-0 win at Sunderland and the impressive performance at Wembley.

The return to a 4-2-3-1 formation has now yielded back-to-back Premier League away wins for the first time this season – and ten goals in three games for Saints.

But Deeney got Watford off to the perfect start when his sidefooted volley, from the corner of the six-yard box, went into the far corner of Fraser Forster’s goal, following a throw from Younes Kaboul.

A good tackle from Yoshida kept Stefano Okaka at bay after the Italian forward burst down the right and another raid from M’Baye Niang was quashed during a bright start from the home side.

Saints’ first foray ended with James Ward-Prowse’s cross sailing harmlessly behind for a goal-kick.

Ryan Bertrand was not short of confidence after his outstanding performance in the EFL Cup final.

His one-two with Dusan Tadic was followed by a cross that was cut out at the near post .

Ward-Prowse had Saints’ first effort on target. He won a corner with a fiercely struck cross-shot that was turned behind by Heurelho Gomes following Tadic’s well-weighted lay-off.

Cedric was booked for a foul midway inside Saints’ half and from the resulting free-kick Jack Stephens did well to block an effort from Okaka, who fired wide.

Saints were always a threat on the counter attack.

Gomes was forced into another save, this time at his near post from Gabbiadini, before Bertrand cut in and drilled a right-footer wide as Saints continued to look for an equaliser.

The solidly built Okaka was a threat in the air and headed wide two deliveries from Jose Holebas; a cross from the left and a right-flank corner, before referee Jonathan Moss took aside Jack Stephens and Sebastian Prodl for a quiet word.

Saints countered well through Steven Davis, Oriol Romeu and Ward-Prowse before the ball was switched to Bertrand.

Etienne Capoue, Watford’s goalscorer at St Mary’s on the opening day of the season, cut on to his right and fired powerfully but just wide of Forster’s right-hand upright.

Tadic fired low into the far right corner from 15 yards out through a crowded penalty area soon after being crowded out as he attempted to dribble his way through.

Redmond appeared to be in an offside position, but ensured he was not interfering with play by jumping over the ball as it made its way into the bottom corner, as Gomes dived underneath him.

Gabbiadini was booked for a foul on Valon Behrami in front of the dug outs before threatening to become the first Saints player to score in his first four games for the club, following a quick exchange of passes.

Ward Prowse whipped a left-flank free kick just wide of the near post before an encouraging move involving Romeu, Redmond and Davis ended with Gabbiadini flagged offside.

The Italian headed away a corner at the near post and Tadic did well to block a Kaboul shot inside the Saints area.

At the other end, Gomes saved from Tadic at his near post and dealt comfortably with a Cederc 20-yarder before Okaka was booked for dissent.

Then, in first-half injury time, Redmond put Saints in front by ending a wonderful move that he began with a clinical finish into the far corner.

Redmond continued his Wembley form by beating two players before finding Ward-Prowse, who played in Cedric.

The Portugese pulled it back for Redmond, who had continued his run and finished clinically in the bottom of the far corner.

Ten minutes into the second half, Gabbiadini went on a thrilling run to the delight of the Saints fans behind Gomes’s goal.

He beat his man on the outside and surged into the penalty area before being denied following a misunderstanding with Tadic.

Romeu fired over when Holebas headed away a Tadic cross and Yoshida did well as Okaka threatened an equaliser.

Ward Prowse was denied at the near post following a swift one-two with Tadic, whose 25 yard half volley was turned behind for another flag kick by the leaping Gomes.

From Tadic’s free kick, Gomes then did well to thwart Yoshida from close range.

Roared on by a passionate Vicarage Road crowd, Watford looked for the equaliser Forster denied Okaka at his near post and with time to get a shot away at the far post following Holebas’s cross, Deeney of all people missed the target.

Ten minutes after replacing Capoue, Isaac Success provided the cross from which the Hornets stung Saints a second time.

He whipped it in from the left and Okaka completed the one-two by sidefooting in the equaliser at the near post as Stephens tried in vain to block his effort.

Stephens came out on top against Okaka before another substitution reaped dividends. Sofiane Boufal, having replaced Ward-Prowse in the 78th minute, drilled a 20-yarder that bounced off Gomes chest – and Gabbiadini gobbled up his sixth goal in four games.

As if that was not enough, Redmond was allowed to ghost down the left unchallenged before drilling the fourth emphatically into the roof of the net.

It was the perfect post-Wembley pick-me-up for the delighted Saints fans who made the trip. Even Abdoulaye Doucoure’s injury-time consolation could not dampen their spirits.

Watford 3 Southampton 4: Nathan Redmond dispels EFL Cup hangover in cracking game

Show/hide article…

They swiftly dismissed missing out on a first piece of silverware in 40-odd years and got back to their day job with a stout-hearted gutsy performance. Two goals inside three minutes gave Saints the high ground but Watford fought back to take the game to a nail-biting finish. Saints fought back from a early goal down to leap-frog Watford in the table and move closer to security. They had Oriol Romeu and Nathan Redmond pulling strings, while striker Manolo Gabbaidini is fast become a South Coast cult figure with blistering attacks.

Combined, they marred Watford skipper Troy Deeney’s day when his third minute goal elevated him to fourth in the club’s all-time record with 105 goals - although he’s still a long way behind the 140 scored by holder Ross Jenkins. Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho believed Saints were better last Sunday and it’s a credit their leg-weary players dragged themselves back for the fith once more. It had all started so well for Watford with Deeney scoring after just 3 minutes and 23 seconds. Younes Kaboul launched a throw-in he flicked on and Stefano Okaka touched back for Deeney to cleverly curl into the top corner of Southampton’s net.

Saints fans howled Kaboue’s left foot was over the line then they howled again when they equalised in the 29th minute. Romeu, always ready to push from midfield, sparked another raid and Watford almost fell over their own fee to clear. Dusan Tadic had one shot blocked and rifled home his second as Watford defender’s seemingly had no idea of what was going on After their early shock, Saints eventually looked the better side. They defended well and their attacks always seem to carry more menace than Watford. So it was no surprised when Redmond, all legs and action, scored the second in first half added time, finishing off a move he had started in midfield.

The confidence which seemed to be coming back by the week for Walter Mazzarri’s robust Hornets ebbed away and Saints took over with Watford keeper Heurelho Gomes making a string of decent saves. Watford made a decent fist of the final quarter and eventually their recovery was rewarded when Okaka turned in sub Isaac Success’s cross in the 79th minute. But it wasn’t to last. Gabbiandini struck another goal in his sort career in the 84th minute and three minutes later Redmond made job over with his second and their fourth. Watford sub Abdoulaye Doucoure scored in the third minute of added time to add to the drama of a frenzied finish.

It’s a joy to play in, says Redmond

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel’s men have now recorded back-to-back wins and scored four goals in each of their last two away games.

He said: “We put the cup final to bed and it was about getting back to basics and playing as well as enjoying the football at the same time.

“The coach reiterates that no matter where we go, it’s about how we play and today was a good day with three points and two goals for myself.

“I haven’t scored since the Liverpool game so to get two I’m delighted but more important was to bounce back from the Wembley defeat. It’s a bit of a relief and we focus on the next challenge now.

“We’ve got good players. Dušan gives us creativity and Prowsey with his delivery and you saw with the fluidity and the movement of the three or four that we’ve got the players to do that.

“It helps when players like myself are driving with the ball and you see Manolo running off and Dušan coming into pockets. It’s a joy to play in.”
