Martin Caceres potentially a fantastic signing for Southampton, says Ryan Bertrand

Show/hide article…

Ryan Bertrand believes Martin Caceres will be a fantastic signing for Southampton should the deal go through.

The former Juventus defender, who has been without a club since leaving the Serie A champions last summer, is set for a medical at Southampton ahead of a proposed free transfer.

Claude Puel’s side are short of options in defence after selling Jose Fonte to West Ham in the January window and losing Virgil van Dijk to an ankle injury for at least two months.

When asked what Caceres, 29, could bring to Southampton, Bertrand told Sky Sports News HQ: "Experience and quality.

"He may have been injured but that doesn’t necessarily change the player. I’m sure - I’ve heard just as much as you - but if the deal was to go through it would only strengthen the team.

“He has got great pedigree and if we can get the best out of him he will be a fantastic signing for the club.”

Southampton have lost all three of their matches since sealing a place in the EFL Cup final against Manchester United, which you can watch live on Sky Sports.

They are seven points above Hull City who occupy the final relegation place, but Bertrand insists the club is looking up the table rather than down.

“It’s about the mindset,” Bertrand added. "You look at it as seven points off 18th but we are possibly four points off ninth. It’s how you look at it.

"I would have the glass-half-full mentality if anything and look up to close four points than worry about what’s below.

“The quality we have in this team - not just with the signings they have made - we know what to do and we know we have the resources. That’s never a concern.”

Playing “high risk” centre-back role comes “naturally” to Bertrand

Show/hide article…

RYAN Bertrand insists playing in central defence comes “naturally” to him as Claude Puel prepares to turn to the left-back amid a crisis at the heart of Saints’ backline.

Saints are desperately short on quality centre-back options and, as a result, Puel has considered shuffling Bertrand into the middle ahead of facing Sunderland’s prolific striker Jermain Defoe at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Bertrand is usually one of Saints’ best attacking outlets on the left side.

But the England international is willing to swap his swashbuckling role on the flank for a more “high risk” job at centre-back to help shore up the leaky defence, which has conceded ten goals in three games in all competitions.

Despite the enormous responsibility that comes with playing at centre-back, Bertrand, who played there under Ronald Koeman last season – although mainly in a back three, is confident that he doesn’t need to do anything specific in training to adjust.

“It just comes naturally,” said the 27-year-old. “It’s the same defensive principles, but there are different requirements of the job.

“There is no more running forwards as much and there’s a bit more discipline. It’s a bit more of a high risk position, but it just comes naturally.”

“It’s nice to play new positions. It’s good to learn and succeeding in a new position is good for your career,” he added. “If I have to play there, then I’ll play there.”

Once a work permit has been granted and formalities are concluded, free agent defender Martin Caceres will sign for Saints to reinforce the wobbly defence.

After captain Virgil van Dijk’s injury and Jose Fonte’s departure to West Ham, Puel has had no choice recently but to turn to the inexperienced youngster Jack Stephens and usual back-up Maya Yoshida in the middle.

The pair performed admirably in the memorable League Cup semi-final second leg victory at Liverpool, but have struggled in defeats to Swansea and West Ham since.

Consequently, Saints have looked to bring in Caceres, while Puel has mooted the possibility of using Bertrand in there too.

If Bertrand is to make the switch at bottom side Sunderland on Saturday, he will have the unenviable task of shackling the Black Cats’ veteran Defoe.

The 34-year-old is the top-flight’s fifth highest scorer with 14 goals this campaign and is in good form, having netted a brace in Sunderland’s surprise 4-0 win at Crystal Palace last time out.

Bertrand believes, despite his age, Defoe is one of the best goal-scorers in the Premier League.

“Class is permanent and he’s arguably one of the best in the league at what he does,” he said.

“He’s come back and he’s playing – with all due respect – in a lesser side, according to the table at least, but still producing the goals.

“He fully deserves everything and deserves more recognition.

“He’s very professional in his approach to football and that’s continued, proving again that age is just a number and, at the end of it, 14 goals in the Premier League is no small feat.”

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren whose life is still marked by scars of war calls for more compassion towards refugees

Show/hide article…

Dejan Lovren can still remember the sirens, how he was clinging to his mother in a basement shelter to escape the bombs, and the 17-hour drive across the German border that saved him.

It was 1991 and Yugoslavia was fracturing. Lovren was three and his family’s idyllic life in the multi-cultural village of Kraljeva Sutjeska was decimated by the Balkans war.

Lovren has referenced his experiences as a childhood refugee throughout his career, but his recent recollections detailing the chaos, fear and intolerance confronting those displaced by global conflict carry greater resonance.

His latest emotional interview was broadcast in a moving documentary produced by Liverpool’s in-house TV channel, in which Lovren pleaded for more compassion and understanding to be shown towards the refugee community.

“When I see what’s happening today I just remember my thing, my family and how people don’t want you in their country,” said Lovren. “I understand people want to protect themselves, but also people don’t have homes. It’s not their fault; they’re fighting for their lives just to save their kids. They want to go away and have a secure place for their kids and their futures.

“I went through all this and I know what some families are going through. Give them a chance, give them a chance. You can see who the good people are and who are not.”

Premier League star set to snub Man City and Liverpool in the summer

Show/hide article…

The £50m rated Van Dijk – also wanted by French giants Paris St Germain - was expected to quit St Mary’s this summer. But Saints are now increasingly confident they can keep their star man for at least another year following his appointment as captain, 25. After handing centre back Van Dijk the armband following Jose Fonte’s departure to West Ham last month, Saints sought assurances he was committed to the south coast.

A source said: “When Virgil took the captaincy it was on the understanding he would lead the team until the end of next season as a minimum. “He has a long-term contract and is settled at the club.” Van Dijk has earned a string of admirers with his stellar performances since joining Saints from Celtic in September 2005 in a £13m deal.

The towering Dutchman signed a bumper new six-year contract in May last year, which Saints insist has no release clause. Van Dijk is currently sidelined with an ankle injury, meaning veteran Northern Ireland midfielder will skipper the side for their EFL Cup final with Manchester United at the end of the month. Retaining can Dijk would be a major statement from the Southampton board following a string of big-name departures in recent summers.
