READER LETTER: Saints are lucky to have Claude Puel

Show/hide article…

We are writing on behalf of all the real fans of Southampton FC, who have supported Saints all their lives through all their struggles.

Everyone has the right to their own opinion, but we were shocked that a man claiming to be a Saints fan called John Carter criticised every single thing about our football club in a letter on December 27 – the management, our players, playing our academy players (which is more than Koeman did), the price of tickets, selling our best players (if a player wants to go there’s nothing you can do to stop them) and even the poor selection of food and prices.

It’s a wonder he doesn’t ask for cushions to be put on his seat!

Why does he even go to our games if it’s such a hardship?

The thing that made us really angry was that he had the nerve to keep saying that was the opinion of all fans.

Well, I’m sorry, but the real fans disagree with everything he says.

The real fans were there when we were supporting our team down in League 1, when we went through the heartbreak of nearly losing our club.

If someone had said to us back then, your club will be saved and not only that but at Christmas 2016 you will be in the Premier League in seventh place, you will also be in the semi-finals of the League Cup and for the second year running you would have been in Europe, we would have sobbed with joy.

You don’t realise what you’ve got until you almost lose it.

This is why we appreciate every single thing about our football club because we are lucky to even have one.

Unfortunately, like every football club, you get a minority of negative people that Saints fans call the moaners.

These are the people that jumped on the bandwagon just because we are in the Premiership. Look where Portsmouth are now. What they would give to be anywhere near us. If we were where Portsmouth are, our real fans would still be supporting our team and the moaners would be nowhere in sight!

As for criticising the way our manager talks, at least he speaks! Not like a certain other manager who used an interpreter all the time and then, when he dumped us for Spurs, he miraculously spoke English!

Our manager hasn’t been with us long, but look at the way he has coped with all the extra games we’ve had.

Look at all the congestion over Christmas, worse than any other club, and of course it’s going to take its toll. Why can’t people understand this?

For the majority of the time our manager has got it right and we are very lucky to have him here.

As for the “just keep trudging along the middle of the table” comment, when we were originally in the Premiership, year after year we were struggling at the bottom of the table with the anxiety of being relegated.

What would we have given back then to be even as high as the middle of the table?

Some people have the same mentality as Manchester United fans.

They expect too much and unless they win it’s not good enough. They think they’re better than everyone else. They walk out if they come second in a cup final.

Look at our fans at the Millennium Stadium when we lost to Arsenal in the FA Cup. Not one Saints fan walked out at the end of that game, we were too busy applauding our players for even getting that far.

No true Saints fan would ever boo their team, no matter what the score, because we know our players work their socks off for us. This is when fake fans show themselves for what they really are.

We wondered what he found to moan about when Saints beat Liverpool in the EFL Cup Semi-Final – the toilets, maybe?

We have a lovely family club and a lady owner and a wonderful chairman who cares about the fans (not like the last one)!

We are so proud of where we are now and thankful to all those people who have helped us get here.

If that’s not good enough for a handful of moaners then they should go to Manchester United and join the fans who have no heart, or better still, go down the road to Portsmouth, they’ll have plenty to moan about there – they’ll be in their element!

Negative people are not welcome at our club and that’s unanimous from all the real Saints fans.

Virgil van Dijk has made unbelievable progress, claims Ronald de Boer

Show/hide article…

Ajax legend Ronald de Boer believes the ‘unbelievable progress’ Virgil van Dijk has made has helped him become ‘one of the top defenders in the Premier League’.

The Dutch centre back has been sensational since arriving at Southampton from Celtic at the beginning of the 2015-16 campaign, impressing in his debut season and has continued his excellent performances for Claude Puel this season.

His outstanding form saw Manchester City consider a January move and although that failed to materialise, Pep Guardiola could make another move in the summer.

And De Boer, the former Ajax, Barcelona and Rangers midfielder, says he was unsure about the defender at first but has changed his mind after seeing him star in England.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: 'He has made a transition in a positive way.

'Under Ronald Koeman at Southampton he made unbelievable progress and now this year he is one of the top defenders in the Premier League.

'When he was at Groningen he did OK, he was physical, but we Dutch men always want defenders to play the ball to the same colour and that is something we thought was not his best thing. But now he does that.

‘His passing is excellent but, most importantly, his defending is outstanding. He is showing it week in, week out in one of the toughest leagues in the world.’

Eden Hazard, Diego Costa and N’Golo Kante head PFA Player of the Year contenders

Show/hide article…

We look at the leading contenders to win this season’s PFA Player of the Year award after Chelsea strengthened their grasp on the Premier League title.

Three of Antonio Conte’s men unsurprisingly head Sky Bet’s market on the award after they took another significant step towards lifting the trophy with Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Arsenal.

However, the star men from the Blues’ main rivals are not quite written off at this stage, with 14 games still to go to defend their nine-point lead and a wide-open battle for the Golden Boot on going.

In order of Sky Bet’s odds, here’s a look at the favourites for the award…

It also comes as no surprise to see the man who lifted the PFA award last time Chelsea won the Premier League title considered favourite.

Suggestions that the Belgian is back to his best are backed up by a haul of 10 goals so far this season, compared to 14 in 2014/15, but his assists stats are well down, with just three compared to nine two seasons back.

However, with his sublime goal against Arsenal likely to be fresh in the memory of voters, Hazard has been cut from 11/1 at the start of the season to his current price of 9/4.

It comes as no coincidence that Kante is on course for a second successive Premier League title, with his screening work helping the Blues keep a league high 13 clean sheets.

Having more tackles per game than any other player in leading Leicester to the most unlikely of glories last season, the French defensive midfielder is back among the leaders in the category again.

The importance of his presence was perfectly demonstrated on Saturday as Arsenal’s creative players were restricted, while his opposite number Francis Coquelin produced an ineffective display.

His importance has not gone unnoticed by punters, attracting more interest than any other player in the market, prompting his starting price of 25/1 to plummet.

He may be unlikely to win clubman of the year but, with 15 goals and five assists, Costa trumps his team-mates in terms of goals and assists.

He is, however, also no longer the clear favourite for the Premier League Golden Boot, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Alexis Sanchez matching his tally, while Romelu Lukaku has leapfrogged the lot following his four-goal haul at the weekend.

The Brazilian-born Spain international is arguably the most vital single component in his side’s title hopes, but his ability to rack up enemies quicker than friends has clearly been taken into account by the bookies.

Manchester United’s title hopes may be all but dead but that highlights how impressive Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been.

At 35 years old and in his first season in the Premier League, the Swedish star has racked up 15 goals despite United being the top-six’s lowest scorers by some distance.

Indeed, only Jermain Defoe has scored a higher percentage of his side’s goals this season.

Grander expectations naturally surrounded his Old Trafford arrival, but Champions League qualification and domestic cup glory would certainly represent progress for Jose Mourinho’s side - with Ibrahimovic arguably deserving the majority of credit.

Tottenham’s position as Chelsea’s nearest rivals was consolidated at the weekend and it is the man who last inflicted defeat on the Blues that is also considered the main threat to their individual accolade hopes.

The 20-year-old headed home a decisive brace at White Hart Lane to sink Antonio Conte’s men, their only loss since September, although Spurs have failed to make further ground since due to back-to-back draws on the road.

If Mauricio Pochettino’s men can close the gap, then Alli or Harry Kane (20/1) suddenly face a battle for favouritism, but the former MK Dons man will otherwise have to continue to add to his tally of 11 goals to stand a chance of improving on last season’s PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Unlike Spurs, Manchester City did manage to make up ground when Chelsea drew at Liverpool, while Champions League football offers their stars an additional chance to impress.

However, with a 10-point gap to close and the shortlist being defined well before the business end of Europe’s top competition, it looks a big ask for one of Pep Guardiola’s men to land the award as they struggle to meet expectations.

De Bruyne is considered their leading contender as he tops the assist charts with nine, although a goal tally of four hardly aids his case.

Having been directly involved in more goals than any other player this season, the Arsenal man can rightly feel aggrieved by sitting sixth in the betting.

That record sees him rated as the highest performer in Sky Sports Fantasy Football’s points charts.

However, his hopes of individual accolades are undermined by another season of disappointment for Arsenal, who have slipped 12 points off the title pace following back-to-back losses.

Tottenham’s top scorer Kane and their chief architect Christian Eriksen are given 20/1 and 33/1 chances, while Liverpool’s attacking midfielders Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane have drifted out to 25/1 and 33/1 respectively amid their side’s winless start to 2017.

The wold’s most expensive player Paul Pogba is also 33/1, while leading scorer Romelu Lukaku is joined by Adam Lallana and David Silva on 40/1. Meanwhile, pre-season favourite Sergio Aguero has drifted out from 8/1 to 66/1 after being benched in successive games by Guardiola.
