Saints set to complete Caceres signing

Show/hide article…

SAINTS expect to sign former Juventus and Barcelona defender Martin Caceres in the coming days to solve their centre-back crisis, the Daily Echo understands.

Caceres is in Southampton for a medical and talks as Saints look to bring in cover following Virgil van Dijk’s injury and Jose Fonte’s departure.

The 29-year-old free agent has not played for a year and has been without a club since last summer, after ending his five-year stay at Juventus.

The Daily Echo understands that the deal will only be completed once a work permit is granted, and other formalities are concluded.

It is likely Caceres will command high wages but, with Claude Puel’s side very short on defensive options, Saints are ready to offer what will likely be a short-term contract to bring in cover.

Puel has only Maya Yoshida, Jack Stephens and Florin Gardos at his disposal at centre-back, with Van Dijk injured and Fonte gone.

One of the biggest concerns for Saints will be Caceres’ fitness – the Uruguayan hasn’t played since last February after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon and has a history of injuries.

Yet, he offers vast experience and it will come as a major boost to have new blood at the back.

The defensive frailties were all too obvious on Saturday, as Saints lost 3-1 to West Ham at St Mary’s – their sixth defeat in seven Premier League games.

Saints failed to bring in defensive cover in the January transfer window after a move for Spartak Moscow’s Serdar Tasci fell through.

With the market now closed until the summer, a free agent of Caceres’ quality may be just the tonic Saints need.

His career started in his homeland, Uruguay, at Defensor, before moving to Spanish outfit Villareal in 2007.

He spent a season on loan at Recreativo, before leaving parent club Villareal for Barcelona.

Caceres’ game time was limited at Barca because of injury problems and being behind Rafael Marquez, Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol in the pecking order at the Camp Nou.

Subsequently, he left on loan for Juventus and then Sevilla, who he eventually joined permanently in 2011.

Los Rojiblancos then sent him back to the Italian giants in a second loan spell, before he signed a contract with the Old Lady in 2012.

The 5ft11in defender won five Serie A titles with Juventus, as well as the Coppa Italia twice.

Caceres went on trial to Crystal Palace in the January transfer window, but Selhurst Park boss Sam Allardyce signed Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho on loan instead.

He most recently rejected a move to AC Milan, having failed to agree personal terms.

Martin Caceres: Southampton close to ex-Juventus defender deal

Show/hide article…

Southampton are close to agreeing a deal to sign former Barcelona and Juventus centre-back Martin Caceres.

The Uruguayan, 29, will complete a move once a work permit has been granted and other formalities are concluded.

Caceres, who has 68 caps for his country, left Juventus in the summer and can join Saints as a free agent.

He will provide cover after Virgil van Dijk was ruled out for up to three months with an ankle problem and Jose Fonte left for West Ham.

Caceres made 77 appearances for the Italian champions across three spells, winning the Serie A title four times.

He has also played for Barcelona - winning La Liga in 2009 - and Sevilla in the Spanish top flight.

However, he has not made a competitive appearance since last February after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Rank Premier League keepers, including David de Gea and Hugo Lloris

Show/hide article…

With questions over Manchester City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo and Real Madrid reportedly casting their eye over a trio of Premier League shot-stoppers, who is the best 'keeper in the top flight?

City manager Pep Guardiola, who sent Joe Hart on a season-long loan to Torino last summer, recently replaced Bravo with experienced back-up Willy Caballero.

However, Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have both said Guardiola should look to bring in a new first-choice 'keeper for next season.

Meanwhile, according to reports in the Daily Telegraph, Madrid have drawn up a shortlist of goalkeepers to replace current No 1 Keylor Navas at the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.

It is understood that Tottenham Hotspur’s Hugo Lloris, Manchester United’s David de Gea and Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois are the European champions’ preferred targets.

So rank these top-flight 'keepers and tell us who is the best in the Premier League.

McCarthy up for PFA Fans’ Player of the Month

Show/hide article…

The Saints youngster has been on loan with Walsall since June and will remain at Bescot Stadium until the end of the season, having extended his loan deal in January.

McCarthy netted three goals in four games last month, including a late three-minute brace to earn a 3-3 draw away to Bury.

He has five goals to his name for the campaign so far and has made 36 appearances for the Saddlers, helping them to 11th in the League One table.

The 21-year-old is nominated alongside Chuks Aneke (MK Dons), Cian Bolger (Fleetwood), James Vaughan (Bury), Josh Morris (Scunthorpe) and Mark Marshall (Bradford).

Voting for the League One award will open here on Wednesday morning, with the winner announced at 10am the following day.

Southampton set to bolster defensive ranks as they close in on signing of former Juventus man Martin Caceres

Show/hide article…

Southampton are closing in on the signing of former Juventus defender Martin Caceres, it is reported.

The 29-year-old has been without a club since leaving the Serie A giants in the summer and is now set to bolster the Saints’ troubled backline.

Star turn Virgil van Dijk’s injury compounded the January exit of captain Jose Fonte, with Claude Puel’s side subsequently conceding 11 goals in their last four matches in all competitions.

Caceres is now set to add much-needed experience to the defence, although the deal is still a few days from completion as a work permit and clearance is finalised.

The Uruguay international has reportedly turned down interest from AC Milan and Crystal Palace, favouring a switch to the side who take on Manchester United in the EFL Cup final on February 26.

Caceres is unlikely to be able to slot straight in the team given he has not played since last February after undergoing surgery on a torn right Achilles tendon.

Southampton to sign centre-back Martin Caceres on free transfer

Show/hide article…

Southampton are set to sign former Juventus and Barcelona defender Martin Caceres on a free transfer, according to Sky sources.

It is understood a deal to sign the former centre-back, 29, will be completed when Caceres has received a work permit and passed a medical.

Caceres, who has won titles in Spain and Italy but has not played in a competitive match for a year, has also been of interest to Sunderland and Crystal Palace.

But the Saints, who have been on the market for a centre-back since they sold captain Jose Fonte to West Ham last month, appear to have beaten the competition.

Caceres was released by Juventus last summer after injuries meant he played only 58 times for the Bianconeri in three years.

Caceres passed a medical with Milan last week but could not agree personal terms, and he failed a medical at Turkish club Trabzonspor last month.

Southampton need cover for Virgil van Dijk, who will be out for two months with an ankle injury.

Fantasy Football managers scramble to sign up Gabriel Jesus

Show/hide article…

No Premier League player has been transferred in more by Sky Sports Fantasy Football’s managers than Gabriel Jesus following the Manchester City star’s stunning start.

The 19-year-old Brazilian scored one and set another up on his full debut at West Ham United last Wednesday, before scoring twice in Super Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Swansea City, seeing him rack up more points than any other player so far this month.

Having been priced up at £10.6m, less than the likes of Wilfried Bony and Christian Benteke, the teenager has been transferred in twice as many times as any other player over the last week.

He is, however, still owned by just 2.4 per cent of all Sky Sports Fantasy Football managers, although City are without a Premier League fixture on February 25/26 due to the EFL Cup final.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is second in terms of most transferred in after taking his goal tally to 15 at the weekend, while the league’s top points-scoring defender - Marcos Alonso - continues to gain popularity after netting for the fourth time this season.

Team-mate Diego Costa continues to attract recalls after concerns over his future resulted in mass sales in January, while Romelu Lukaku was the weekend’s highest scorer with 29 points thanks to his four-goal haul against Bournemouth.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola’s faith in the new young star has understandably raised concerns over of the game’s most-expensive player, Sergio Aguero (£13m), who has been the second-most transferred out player following back-to-back starts from the bench.

Somewhat surprisingly, the season’s top points scorer Alexis Sanchez is the only injury-free player to have been ditched by more managers amid worries over Arsenal’s troubling form.

A drop in form for Liverpool has also clearly alerted those with Adam Lallana in their team, with the England midfielder failing to provide a goal or assist in his last six appearances.

Virgil van Dijk has understandably been dropped by the majority of his owners after suffering an ankle injury, while popular bargain pick Charlie Daniels is also facing a spell on the sidelines.

Martin Tyler’s stats and facts: Gabriel Jesus’ rise and substituted players

Show/hide article…

From the super start of Gabriel Jesus to Olivier Giroud’s goals record from the bench, Martin Tyler has the best stats from the latest round of games…

Hit the video to see his latest tricky teaser and send your questions to Martin in one of the following ways…

Use the comments box at the bottom of this page

I was at Stamford Bridge on Saturday to see Chelsea’s fifth consecutive Premier League home win over Arsenal - and their seventh in the last eight. Chelsea have won their last nine home league games plus two FA Cup ties, scoring 35 and conceding five.

Since Arsenal’s last league title (and the arrival of Roman Abramovich and his funds at Stamford Bridge) - 12 completed seasons - Chelsea have finished higher in the table on 10 occasions, winning the title four times.

Arsenal had not conceded in the first 15 minutes of their first 22 Premier League games, but conceded two against Watford and one against Chelsea.

N’Golo Kante played in his 60th Premier League game and he’s lost only six, with three against Arsenal. This is the first time he has played Arsenal and not lost!

This was the 50th meeting of these two ever-present Premier League sides. Chelsea have won 17, Arsenal have won 19 and we’ve seen 14 draws.

Chelsea have the most goals from substitutes in Premier League history - Cesc Fabregas made it 158. A small consolation for Arsenal is they have the most headed goals in the Premier League this season, with Olivier Giroud taking it to 13 (25 per cent of their 52 Premier League goals) with his first goal in 11 games against Chelsea.

Arsene Wenger was unbeaten in his first 17 Premier League games against Chelsea - but has now lost 14 of the more recent 24 and nine of the last 12 at Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal have scored in 15 consecutive Premier League games which is the best current run in the Premier League. Arsenal were the only team Chelsea hadn’t scored against before Saturday, so they have now scored against all 19 of the other teams.

Gabriel Jesus has scored on his first two starts in the Premier League. What’s the longest scoring streak from a full debut? (Catherine, London)

MARTIN SAYS: It’s been an incredible introduction to England for Jesus, but he’s still got some way to go to match the scoring feats of Mick Quinn and Diafra Sakho, who both scored in SIX games in a row from their Premier League starting debut.

Quinn netted 10 times in his first six starts for Coventry in the 1992/93 season (although he had played in the First Division before that).

Meanwhile, Sakho netted once in each of his first six starts after joining West Ham in 2014.

Jesus has netted in his first two, and would have to find the net in Man City’s next four games against Bournemouth (on Monday Night Football), Sunderland, Stoke and Liverpool to equal that record. You can see all of those matches live on Sky Sports.

Who has conceded the opening goal most often this season? And who has gained the most points after conceding the opening goal? (Andrew, Bath)

MARTIN SAYS: Crystal Palace have, remarkably, conceded the opening goal in 18 of their 24 games so far this season.

The other sides who’ve conceded first most often are also in the relegation scrap - Hull and Sunderland (17 times) and Leicester and Swansea (17 times).

Arsenal and Chelsea have both conceded first on six occasions, the fewest in the Premier League.

How often has each PL team conceded the first goal this season?

Tottenham, meanwhile, have won 14 points in games they’ve conceded first in this season, which is a Premier League high.

Spurs have conceded first nine times and rescued draws against Manchester City (a), Arsenal (a), West Brom (a), Liverpool (h) and Everton (a), while they’ve beaten West Ham (h), Burnley (h) and Southampton (a) despite falling behind.

That’s in stark contrast to Burnley who haven’t picked up a single point from the 11 matches in which they have conceded the first goal.

Premier League points won after conceding the first goal

Has Theo Walcott been substituted more than any other player in PL history? Smithy

MARTIN SAYS: Walcott was substituted for the 100th time against Chelsea on Saturday, but he’s still got a way to go to break the record.

Unsurprisingly, considering the longevity of his career, Ryan Giggs has been subbed off more times than any player in Premier League history.

The Manchester United legend was replaced 134 times during his 22-year career in the Premier League, just ahead of Nolberto Solano, who was hauled off 130 times during his time with Newcastle, Aston Villa and West Ham.

Joe Cole (128), Paul Scholes (126) and Emile Heskey (126) are close behind, while the only player in the top 10 still active is Aaron Lennon - the Everton winger has been subbed off 113 times so far in his career with Tottenham and the Toffees.

Best off the bench

Olivier Giroud has scored four times from the bench this season, but what’s the record? Azil

MARTIN SAYS: Giroud’s goals as a substitute against Chelsea, following his goal against Man Utd and two against Sunderland, makes him the 48th player to score four goals from the bench in the same season.

Twelve of those players went on to score even more goals from the bench, including Christian Benteke who scored six times for Liverpool last season.

However, the record belongs to Adam Le Fondre who scored a remarkable eight goals from the substitutes bench for Reading during the 2012/13 season.

Goals as a substitute in one season:
