Seager helps Saints back to winning ways

Show/hide article…

Goals from Ryan Seager and Alfie Jones ended Southampton’s four-match losing streak in Division 1 as they beat Leicester City 2-0.

Seager converted Olufela Olomola’s pass for the opener and Jones headed the second to move the Saints up to seventh with a four-point cushion above the relegation zone.

Goalkeeper Mouez Hassen also made his first appearance since his January loan move to Southampton from French side Nice.

The battle against relegation is tightening up in Division 1. Saints are five points above Leicester, who are now bottom - two points adrift of safety - after Derby County’s 5-3 win over Manchester United.

Both sides are back in action in the Premier League Cup next Monday night, with Leicester taking on Brighton & Hove Albion at Crawley and Southampton hosting Swansea City at their training ground.

Record breaking ref to take charge of League Cup final

Show/hide article…

FIFA referee Andre Marriner will be taking charge of his third Wembley final as Saints take on Manchester United in the League Cup final.

The man who has only sent off one player in 21 domestic games this season is no stranger to the big occasion.

In addition to having refereed the FA Cup final and a play-off final, he has also taken charge of World Cup qualifying ties and Europa League games.

The 46-year-old has been on the Premier League list since 2005 - the year he took charge of Saints’ FA Youth Cup final defeat to Ipswich Town.

In 2010 he refereed Blackpool’s 3-2 Championship play-off final win against Cardiff at Wembley.

Three years later he was back at the stadium, taking charge of Wigan’s shock FA Cup final win against red-hot favourites Manchester City, Ben Watson scored a late winner for Wigan against a City team down to ten men after Marriner had dismissed Pablo Zabaleta six minutes from time for a second yellow card offence.

Marriner has taken charge of 24 (check) games in England this season, and has shown just one red card - sending off Hull’s Ahmed Elmohamady for handball at Anfield last September.

His four other red cards came in two European games - three being shown in Panathinaikos’ 2-1 home loss to Ajax in the Europa League and another in a World Cup qualifier between Macedonia and Israel.

Marriner has taken charge of just five Saints games since the start of the 2014/15 season.

The first was the record-breaking 8-0 thrashing of Sunderland in October 2014, while he also took charge of last May’s 4-2 home win over Manchester City.

Earlier in the season, he had sent off Sadio Mane for two bookable offences in Saints’ 1-1 draw at Anfield.

That was the second red card Marriner had shown to a Saints player in his career.

The first had come in the south coast derby at Cherries in March 2011, when he sent sub Oscar Gobern off in the closing minutes of Saints’ 3-1 League 1 success.

GOSSIP: Saints eye free agent Martin Caceres

Show/hide article…

SAINTS could turn to free agent Martin Caceres to solve their defensive problems, according to various news outlets.

The former Juventus centre-back has been unattached since last summer, and recently rejected a move to AC Milan.

A report from Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio suggested that Caceres was having a medical at St Mary’s on Monday.

The 29-year-old passed a medical at the San Siro, but failed to agree personal terms and is now reportedly heading to the south coast.

Caceres went on trial to Crystal Palace in the January transfer window, but Selhurst Park boss Sam Allardyce signed Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho on loan instead.

The 68-capped Uruguayan, who has struggled with injuries throughout his career, has also supposedly attracted interest from West Ham and Sunderland – although his £100,000-a-week wage demands deterred several clubs.

Saints could now look to the former Barcelona man to help solidify their wobbly defence in Virgil van Dijk’s absence through injury.

Having sold off Jose Fonte in the January transfer window, Van Dijk’s ankle problem has left Claude Puel’s men very short at the back, with perennial back-up Maya Yoshida and youngster Jack Stephens now first choice in central defence.

The defensive frailties were all too obvious on Saturday, as Saints lost 3-1 to West Ham at St Mary’s – their sixth defeat in seven Premier League games.

The problem has been amplified with Saints conceding nine goals in their last four home games, having let in just five goals in their first eight league games under Puel at St Mary’s.

Caceres has been without a club since last summer after his contract at Juventus expired.

His career started in his homeland, Uruguay, at Defensor, before moving to Spanish outfit Villareal in 2007.

He spent a season on loan at Recreativo, before leaving parent club Villareal for Barcelona.

Caceres’ game time was limited at Barca because of injury problems and being behind Rafael Marquez, Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol in the pecking order at the Camp Nou.

Subsequently, he left on loan for Juventus and then Sevilla, who he eventually joined permanently in 2011.

Los Rojiblancos then sent him back to the Italian giants in a second loan spell, before he signed a contract with the Old Lady in 2012.

The 5ft11in defender won five Serie A titles with Juventus, as well as the Coppa Italia twice.

With Saints failing to bring in cover during the transfer window, having decided against a move for Spartak Moscow’s Serdar Tasci, Puel has recognised that his team are short on options.

The St Mary’s chief has mooted the possibility of moving Ryan Bertrand to centre-back, with Yoshida, Stephens and Florin Gardos, who has recently returned from a two year injury layoff, the only other available options.

Caceres’ match fitness may be an issue, with his last competitive game more than a year ago.

However, with the January transfer window now closed, a free agent of the calibre of Caceres may well be enough to entice Saints in to a deal.

Everton midfielder Tom Davies wins PFA Fans’ Premier League Player of the Month

Show/hide article…

Everton midfielder Tom Davies has won the PFA Fans’ Premier League Player of the Month award for January beating the likes of Dele Alli and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Over 58,000 votes were cast in the poll, which was held on the Sky Sports website and apps, with Davies claiming victory with 25,045 votes.

Tottenham midfielder Alli came second with 12,560 votes, while Swansea star Sigurdsson was third with 7,977 votes.

Rounding off the top six were Stoke striker Peter Crouch (6,124), Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez (4,957) and Tottenham striker Harry Kane (1,817).

The six candidates were chosen by our expert panel, which included Sky Sports pundits Peter Beagrie and Paul Merson, Mike Riley - general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials, and Malcolm Clarke - chairman of the Football Supporters’ Federation.

And it is Davies, who scored one goal and grabbed two assists, who has come out on top thanks to your votes, which have been verified by an independent party.

The 18-year-old made his Everton debut in September during Everton’s 3-0 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

He has gone on to make a further 10 appearances for the club, making some stand out performances in the league in January, including a man of the match performance in Everton’s 4-0 win over Manchester City.

And it was a performance that drew praise from Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher.

“We spoke about him at Hull when he came on to replace Gareth Barry on that Friday night and he brought that extra energy into midfield,” Carragher said on Super Sunday.

“For 18, and it showed in his interview as well, you can see the maturity in his game and the way he plays.”

Puel ‘cannot be blamed’ for Saints’ Premier League form

Show/hide article…

SAINTS’ current Premier League woes cannot all be blamed on under-pressure manager Claude Puel.

The Frenchman has come in for increased criticism after losing six of his last seven league matches.

He has not been helped by losing talismanic centre half Virgil van Dijk and top scorer Charlie Austin to long-term injuries.

In addition, captain Jose Fonte was sold to West Ham last month after handing in a transfer request - a few weeks after Saints’ executive director of football Les Reed said the player would not leave until a replacement had been brought in.

Nick Illingsworth, who runs the Saints website The Uglier Inside, said: “Puel has made mistakes, certainly, but he has also been very unlucky.

“One of his mistakes was in fielding a reserve team at Sparta Prague in the Europa League, while he has always seemed to work on looking at the next four games as a bunch rather than concentrating fully on the next one.

“But it is unfair to blame him for the club not signing a centre half last month.

“I remember Gordon Strachan once saying that no manager would ever turn down the chance to improve his squad, and Puel is the same.

“He can only work with what he’s got. But what he’s got at the moment is no fit centre half who would get into any other Premier League club in the country.

“Maya Yoshida has been a good servant but he’s been here almost five years and never won a regular place in the team. There’s a reason for that - he’s not good enough.

“Jack Stephens is inexperienced and Florin Gardos has hardly played for two years.

“We could just about cope with Van Dijk and Yoshida together at the back, but not Yoshida and Stephens.

“I’m worried about going to Wembley with any combination of our currently fit centre halves.”

Illingsworth added: “The club knew about the Jose Fonte situation at the start of this season. We should have been bringing in a new centre half as soon as we could in January.

“I’m told we were keen on one centre half but as soon as Fonte was sold the club put the asking price up £5m.

“I understand why we didn’t go for Sakho because he would have cost a certain amount.

“But we’re in a cup final which we should be looking to win. Paying an extra £5m is peanuts.

“Sometimes the club must realise that we have to pay over the odds for a player.”

Southampton look to solve centre-back crisis by signing former Barcelona and Juventus defender Martin Caceres

Show/hide article…

With Van Dijk and Fonte gone, Southampton manager Claude Puel has been forced to turn to Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens at centre-back, as well as Florin Gardos. However, Stephens has only just broken into the first team this season and Gardos has only just returned following injury over the past two years.

Caceres will not come cheap in terms of his wages but, as a free agent, can be signed outside of the transfer window. He also had a trial at Crystal Palace but Sam Allardyce insetad opted to take Mamadou Sakho on loan from Liverpool. Southampton did also look at Sakho but were more interested in a permanent deal and were not willing to pay a potential £20 million fee. They were also interested in taking Serdar Tasci on loan from Spartak Moscow but that fell through amid concern over his fitness.

The main issue with Caceres is clearly his match fitness after being without as club since last summer but he does not turn 30 until April and Southampton will be hoping that he can play a part both in the League Cup final and the run-in to the Premier League season.

READER LETTER: It’s too soon to be writing off Saints’ season

Show/hide article…

I just wanted to put my thoughts across regarding Saints’ season to date, mainly as I have so often read others’ opinions and the one thing that pops up is ‘we’re only X points off from the same amount of fixtures last season’ – a comparison which in my opinion means absolutely nothing.

Since the start of the season I have been keeping a spreadsheet on this, comparing the actual corresponding fixtures against the individual teams (substituting the three relegated teams for the three promoted ones) and compared the actual fixtures, rather than the number of fixtures we have played.

To say one season when we won our first 10 games against the three promoted teams and seven mid/bottom of the table teams is incomparable if the next season our first 10 games are against the ‘top teams’ and we lose them all.

Saying that, at no point this season have we actually been as good as we were last season, comparing the teams fixtures – at best we were possibly a win away from equalling it.

However, poor results have put an end to that. As it stands now, I have us at being seven points worse off than last season. Taking that into account, we are mid-table, nine points clear of the bottom three and approx. Nine points away from where we possibly should be (Editor’s note: this letter was written before the weekend fixtures). Saying that, it is also still possible to finish the season nine points better off than last season.

Unlikely, yes, but mathematically possible. Some people are comparing fixtures from last season including ones against Villa, Norwich and Newcastle, then saying we are six points worse off even though this season it includes fixtures against Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City and we are yet to play teams with a much higher possibility of picking up points against.

We are probably being punished for our own excellence of the past two/three seasons, In my opinion the continuous record breaking seasons (that were undoubtedly helped with the poor seasons some of the ‘top teams’ suffered) were never going to last.

Now throw into the mix a more successful Europa league campaign; however disappointing not progressing beyond the group stages was, we were playing a round further than the previous season, while having some historic nights.

We progressed a round further in the FA Cup than the previous season, once again, an improvement. Then we have the much-anticipated EFL Cup final to look forward to. Again this is an improvement on the previous season when we were knocked out at the quarter-final stage. We win the EFL, Manchester united have a Europa league game on the Wednesday before, and we are back in Europe next season.

Starting next season with a cup in the trophy cabinet, back in Europa League (whether you like the competition or not, for a club of our stature it’s where we want to be playing consistently in order to have any eventual progression) as well as the experience gained from this season, in my opinion is another season of progression, regardless of our eventual league position this season.

With this in mind I am going to continue to read the comments posted on here, agree with some and laugh at others, but until the season is over and the cup final is either won or lost, I don’t think we can really know how successful, or unsuccessful the season has been.

So let’s enjoy the healthy debates regarding team selections, tactics and performances (on all of which, we all know, we are the experts) and enjoy the prospect of a cup final, hopefully a good league position and we can judge the season when it’s actually finished.
