Watch and vote for your favourite Premier League goal of the weekend

Eden Hazard’s solo stunner against Arsenal? Gylfi Sigurdsson’s leveller at Man City? Which was your favourite goal of the weekend in the Premier League?

We have put together a compilation of six of the best strikes from the last round of matches, and you can watch them in the video above before voting for your pick below.

Hazard set Stamford Bridge alight with a stunning individual strike as Chelsea moved 12 points clear of title rivals Arsenal with a resounding 3-1 victory on Saturday.

Sigurdsson continued his rich vein of form in front of goal with Swansea’s equaliser at the Etihad Stadium, although it proved fruitless as Gabriel Jesus hit a late winner for Manchester City.

There were also memorable strikes from Sunderland duo Jermain Defoe and Didier Ndong as the Black Cats claimed a vital victory at Crystal Palace, while one of Romelu Lukaku’s four-goal haul for Everton against Bournemouth makes the cut, alongside Manolo Gabbiadini’s debut Southampton strike which came in the home defeat by West Ham.

Gabbiadini makes Premier League history

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbiadini’s goal on his debut was the 400th Premier League strike contributed by an Italian.

The recent addition to Southampton’s ranks took just 12 minutes to open his account for the club with a well-taken finish against West Ham United on Saturday, and immediately wrote himself into the record books.

From Fabrizio Ravanelli’s memorable Premier League debut for Middlesbrough where he scored a hat-trick against Liverpool, to Gabbiadini’s strike over the weekend, there have been 400 goals scored by Italian players in the division since its formation in 1992.

The former Napoli man also becomes the third Italian to score for Saints too, following in the footsteps of Dani Osvaldo and Graziano Pellè who have also contributed goals in recent seasons.

During his two-year stay here Pellè joined an elite list of Italian footballers who scored over ten goals in one season for a club in the Premier League.

Pellè’s total of 23 goals for Saints made him the fifth highest scoring Italian in the Premier League of all-time, behind Ravanelli, Benito Carbone, Gianfranco Zola and Paolo Di Canio.

Gabbiadini also added his name to the list of players to score on their debut for Southampton, becoming the second player to do so this season, following Nathan Redmond’s contribution against Watford on the opening day of the campaign.

Other players to achieve that feat include Charlie Austin, whose header earned Saints all three points against Manchester United at Old Trafford last season, while Mick Channon, Colin Clarke, Rickie Lambert and Paul Rideout are among those who all enjoyed scoring debuts too.

Not only that, Gabbiaidni became the 100th different scorer for Southampton in the Premier League. There are 12 clubs in total which have achieved that figure to-date.

Southampton close in on free agent Martin Caceres

Show/hide article…

Southampton are in discussions over a deal for free agent Martin Caceres.

The 29-year-old defender is due to have a thorough medical on Monday ahead of signing terms for Claude Puel’s side.

The experienced Uruguayan had a trial spell with Crystal Palace last week but they opted against making him an offer.

He held further discussions with AC Milan but that fell through also.

Southampton need cover after losing Virgil Van Dijk to injury and selling Jose Fonte to West Ham.

Star defender Van Dijk will miss the EFL Cup final against Manchester United.

The Dutch centre half suffered an ankle injury against Leicester on January 22 and manager Claude Puel revealed on Thursday he faces up to three months on the sidelines.

That means he is certain to be out of the Wembley cup clash against Jose Mourinho’s United on February 26.

Ref Watch: Arsene Wenger was wrong about Chelsea’s opener, according to Dermot Gallagher

Show/hide article…

Ref Watch is back to debate another selection of controversial decisions from the weekend round of Premier League fixtures.

Former top-flight official Dermot Gallagher has been in the Sky Sports News HQ studio to give his view on a number of incidents from the latest round of Premier League games.

Dangerous tackles, controversial goals and touchline mayhem all feature in this week’s edition…

SCENARIO: Alonso and Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin both jumped to attack the ball in the six-yard box with the Chelsea man winning the battle and heading home. However, as he jumped, he caught Bellerin with his arm, knocking the full-back to the ground. Arsene Wenger called it a “100 per cent foul.” The goal stood.

DERMOT SAYS: They’ve both jumped with their arms in the air and both are focused on the ball. Alonso never looks at Bellerin once. It was natural contact. It would have been more of a surprise if it had been disallowed.

SCENARIO: Conte rushed from the technical area and threw himself into the crowd, legs in the air, to celebrate with the home fans. “He’s mad,” said Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville as he watched the incident unfold. No action was taken.

DERMOT SAYS: I was thinking that if a player did that he would be yellow carded, so I had a look at the procedures. It says that Conte would get the stepping process, which means when he goes back to the technical area the fourth official would give him his first warning because it’s the three stages. That means if Conte celebrated like that for all three of Chelsea’s goals then he would’ve been dismissed.

SCENARIO: The England international was found with a raking pass just before half-time in behind the Swansea defence and beat goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski to the ball. His momentum made him fall to the ground after the goalkeeper had misjudged the ball - but there were no claims for a penalty by any City players. The play developed and came to nothing, but Dean brought the play back - maybe on the advice of his linesman - to card Sterling for apparent simulation.

DERMOT’S VERDICT: Wrong call. Not a dive, but not a penalty.

DERMOT SAYS: There are three decisions you can make: you can call it a foul, or a dive or say nothing. In this case, it wasn’t a foul or a dive. I think the assistant gave it and they’d had been better off playing on. It’s not a penalty and it’s not a dive.

SCENARIO: Although Swansea manager Paul Clement had no complaints with the goal, he pointed towards an incident by the dugout in the build-up, where substitute Luciano Narsingh was deemed to have fouled Aleksandar Kolarov and City took the free-kick from the position.

DERMOT SAYS: The assistant is up close to the play and he thinks it’s a foul. I’ll go with him on that. The free-kick is taken miles away from where the foul is and the ball, as Clement says, is moving. The assistant is still moving down the line, he’d have been better off staying where he was as he could’ve seen the incident.

INCIDENT: Juan Mata is booked for a late tackle on Jamie Vardy.

SCENARIO: With the game goalless after an uneventful opening 28 minutes, Mata, in an attempt to regain possession after giving the ball away cheaply, caught the Leicester striker high on his ankle with a late tackle.

DERMOT’S VERDICT: Borderline, but understand why it’s a yellow.

DERMOT SAYS: This is almost identical to James Milner’s tackle on Victor Moses in the week. If he had been sent-off he wouldn’t have been arguing. I think it’s a right on the edge. The fact the tackle is low and he starts to pull out has saved him.

INCIDENT: Jeff Hendrick is sent off for a tackle on Jose Holebas.

SCENARIO: In just the sixth minute, Watford were handed an early advantage as Hendrick was sent off for a high tackle on Holebas as he challenged for a ball in midfield.

DERMOT SAYS: It’s a red card because of the height of his boot. The referee has to be sure and by the look of his reaction he is pretty sure. Everybody that looked at it afterwards would say it’s a fair shout.

INCIDENT: Opposing managers David Wagner and Garry Monk were both sent to the stands after being involved in an ugly confrontation.

SCENARIO: With the game at 1-1 and entering the final minute of the game at the John Smith’s Stadium, Michael Hefele dramatically put the home side back in front. Huddersfield boss Wagner reacted to that last-gasp goal by sprinting the entire length of the touchline to celebrate with his own players, leading to a scuffle with his Leeds counterpart Monk on his way back to the dugout. Both managers were sent off.

DERMOT SAYS: I was glad I was watching this one and not refereeing! I felt for the referee as he’d refereed the game perfectly for 89 minutes and then he’s got to sort this out. The only thing he could do is take advice and both managers were sent to the stands. The video will go to the FA this morning and they will take a look at it.

SCENARIO: With the game at 2-1 to St Johnstone, Patrick Roberts dribbled past two defenders on the left before crossing into the middle. Keith Watson went to block the cross and a penalty was awarded for handball.

DERMOT SAYS: He’s made no attempt to handle the ball. It’s struck him at best. If it didn’t strike his arm it would have hit his body and his arms into his body. So, no, it’s not a penalty.

Martin Caceres flying to England for talks with Premier League clubs - Sky sources

Uruguay international defender Martin Caceres is flying to England for talks with Premier League clubs, according to Sky sources.

Caceres is a free agent after leaving Juventus last summer and Southampton are interested in signing the 29-year-old.

The Saints have been looking for a centre-back since selling captain Jose Fonte to West Ham last month and they will be without Virgil van Dijk for at least two months due to an ankle injury.

Sources close to Caceres say Crystal Palace and Sunderland are also interested in signing him.

Caceres passed an AC Milan medical last week but failed to agree personal terms and a move to Turkish club Trabzonspor collapsed last month after he failed a medical.

Premier League grades: Peter Beagrie gives his verdict

Show/hide article…

Find out who impressed in the Premier League as Chelsea kept their nine-point gap at the top and Sunderland picked up a massive result against relegation rivals Crystal Palace.

We asked Premier League Daily guest Peter Beagrie to give each side a grade, based purely on their weekend performance.

So, how did your team fare? Do they get a stunning A, a woeful F, or perhaps something in between? Read on to find out…

It’s a mini league down at the bottom and, against your relegation rivals, Sunderland’s win is three points Crystal Palace can’t get. Sunderland managed to play some decent football under pressure and that’s what got them the result at Selhurst Park. Also, they played with superb spirit. There seems to be good togetherness at Sunderland and that will help as they continue the fight against the drop. They scored when they were on top and it is top of the class for Jermain Defoe for me. None of Sunderland’s January acquisitions catch the eye but keeping hold of Defoe was the best bit of business in the window. Without him I’m sure they would have been cut adrift.

It’s now four wins on the trot at home in all competitions for Hull. It’s always said the fate of the teams down at the bottom will be decided because of their home form. Since Marco Silva has come in he’s been tremendous. He’s made fundamental changes, he’s made them resilient, stronger at the back and the people he’s brought into the club have had a massive bearing on their turnaround in fortunes. He’s changed the whole dynamic at the club. There’s now an air of positivity after what has been an amazing turnaround.

Chelsea were under pressure going into the game in terms of keeping or extending their gap at the top, so that comes into consideration when looking at their performance. They did everything right and had champions written all over them. They are back to where they were before when they last won the league which is strong, resilient and they can do the ugly things needed to win tough games. That’s what they’ve got over the other teams at the top of the league. For me, they deserve an A.

United are getting better and better. I think they are favourites to get a top four spot because they are better defensively than both Arsenal and Liverpool. They have a great chance of getting back into the Champions League and that would be a successful season for United and it will give them a good base to build off.

There were a lot of questions surrounding West Ham a few weeks ago but Andy Carroll coming back into the fold has really helped them. Southampton’s not an easy place to go and to come away with three points is a huge bonus for Slaven Bilic. Any three points away from home against a top team, which Southampton can be on their day, shouldn’t be sniffed at.

Sometimes you’ve got to find a way to get over the line and they did just that with Gabriel Jesus grabbing the late goal to seal all three points at home against Swansea. It wasn’t convincing at all from City but they found a way to win. They were excellent in the first half but sometimes it’s difficult to break down teams that sit in and deny space in between the lines. That’s where David Silva flourishes but there wasn’t much space for him to dictate play like he normally does. However, they got the two goals through Jesus and I think it’s a masterstroke from Pep Guardiola to rest Sergio Aguero. I honestly think it’s a rest and that’s all it is because he’s come back from international duty on a couple of occasions after long journeys with a few niggles. He should come back a lot fresher and that will benefit City in the long run.

There are pluses and minuses for Everton. The minuses are the three goals they conceded but when you go forward at will, pick an attacking line-up and vacate the midfield area against a side like Bournemouth, you will have problems at the back. However, I thought Ronald Koeman’s side were absolutely terrific going forward. I know Romelu Lukaku took the headlines with his goals and Tom Davies has been superb in recent weeks, but under the radar Ross Barkley has been flourishing. He’s been amazing in the last six or seven games and that’s a positive sign for both Everton and England. Despite the goals scored though, it’s only a B for Everton because of the goals they conceded.

The scoreline shows this game to be tighter than it actually was. Spurs were dominant and could have added a few more goals. I look at the job Mauricio Pochettino has done since coming in at White Hart Lane and it’s an amazing transformation. What I look for is development as a team alongside the individual development of the players. All the individuals have improved under his tutelage in every aspect of the game. They haven’t got a soft under belly anymore and you look at Harry Kane, he’s in brilliant form. However, it’s just a B for Spurs as they should have scored a few more goals.

It’s so important to build on a big result like Watford’s in midweek against Arsenal. That’s what they’ve done and Watford are another club who continue to grow in belief, stature and the quality of the squad. The departure of Odion Ighalo could have affected them but it hasn’t. They’ve got on with it and the results have followed. Things are looking good for them at the moment.

You’ve got to win your home games, it’s imperative. This was a typical Tony Pulis result. It was all hands to the pump at times but they defended really well. They were under a lot of pressure at times but they defended their box very well to keep their good form going.

On their day Arsenal can beat anyone but those days are now becoming few and far between. When I look at Arsenal I see a team that are not improving. We’ve seen that result so many times before in terms of the scoreline and the manner of the defeat.

As far as Bournemouth are concerned if they are brave enough, like they were on Saturday in the second-half at Goodison Park, they will pick up points. For me, they’ve got goals in them. I think they’ve got a few more goals in them than teams in and around the bottom. I think they have enough to avoid relegation.

Southampton are very Jekyll and Hyde. They pull some great results out of the bag but they can just as easily get beaten when you least expect them to. Southampton will be very disappointed with the result against West Ham. It’s one they would have looked at and targeted for three points.

Going into the game the focus was on Burnley’s poor away record and while it’s another defeat on the road for Sean Dyche’s men, the early sending off didn’t help them. Ill-discipline does cost you and it was a poor tackle from Jeff Hendrick. He’ll know that when he looks back because he’s gone in over the ball. That will be disappointing for him and the club because they’ll miss him when he’s suspended.

Stoke were in good form going into the game at West Brom and will be disappointed with the result. However, the Hawthorns is not an easy place to go and they came up against a typical Pulis performance from a good West Brom side.

The scoreline flatters Middlesbrough in all honesty. It wasn’t until the latter stages that they came into the game but before that it could have easily been three or four. However, it’s no disgrace to lose at White Hart Lane so it’s a C.

Swansea never give up. They showed their battling qualities and you need that when you are down at the bottom. Paul Clement’s done a superb job since he’s come in and in Gylfi Sigurdsson, he’s got a player who could play for any of the top four sides and not look out of place.

For the first 30 minutes there wasn’t a lot between Leicester and Manchester United. This has been a problem for Leicester because they haven’t been able to keep their good performances going for 90 minutes. No two halves are the same for them and they haven’t got the consistency they had before. they’ve got so many individuals who are so far away from where they were last year. It was a disastrous result for them really, especially at home where they haven’t been too bad.

Everything that could have gone wrong for Sam Allardyce and his side went wrong. It’s a poor result anyway you look at it, but especially at home and especially against a relegation rival. Allardyce now has a huge job on his hands.

It’s defensive deficiencies again for Liverpool. It’s the same old story with goalkeeping errors and individual errors. When I look at where they were to where they are now, out of both cups and 13 points adrift of Chelsea at the top of the table, they are miles off the pace. On Saturday, Arsenal had lost and Tottenham were not playing until later in the day so they had an opportunity to go second for a period of time but they couldn’t capitalise. Again it was a defeat against a team in the bottom half. Does that raise questions about their attitude, application and their concentration levels? It was another poor day for Jurgen Klopp and his side.

QK Southampton on the hunt for a new manager

Show/hide article…

QK Southampton are on the hunt for a new manager ahead of next season.

Popular boss Mark Sainsbury is set to step down at the end of the current Hampshire Premier League campaign after three years at the helm.

Subsequently, the Redbridge Lane side are looking for a “new management team” to join as Sainsbury exits.

“We’re looking for a smooth transition between the current management team, who are stepping down at the end of the season, and a new management team that want to take over at the end of the season,” said secretary Don Campbell.

“We’re hoping that will enable them to have a good opportunity for them to attract players during the early summer months.

“We want someone who is able to step in as soon as the other manager steps down. That could be at the end of May, middle of May or the end April.

“There’s no way this manager will be replaced if we could keep him, but he’s showing an indication that he’s stepping down at the end of the season.

“Therefore we wanted to do something on a good timeline which will give the other manager an opportunity to come in and get new players in time.”

The Lordshill Recreation Ground side want someone who has “experience and knowledge” of the local football scene.

“We want a person with lots of contacts,” Campbell said. “There will definitely be a need to bring some players in.

“They must have experience and knowledge within the local football community, and has a whole range of contacts.”

“We don’t mind fresh ideas, but we want that continuity, which will enable the continued growth of the club," he added.

“It’s a club that people want to come and play for and we want to continue that.”

Applications should be made to club secretary Don Campbell at doncampbell@qksouthampton.freeserve.co.uk before or on the 21 February deadline.

GOSSIP: Free agent Caceres having medical at Saints

Show/hide article…

SAINTS could turn to free agent Martin Caceres to solve their defensive problems, according to various news outlets.

The former Juventus centre-back has been unattached since last summer, and recently rejected a move to AC Milan.

A report from Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio suggests that Caceres is having a medical at St Mary’s today.

The 29-year-old passed a medical at the San Siro, but failed to agree personal terms and is now reportedly heading to the south coast.

Caceres went on trial to Crystal Palace in the January transfer window, but Selhurst Park boss Sam Allardyce signed Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho on loan instead.

The 68-capped Uruguayan has also reportedly attracted interest from West Ham and Sunderland – although his £100,000-a-week wage demands deterred several clubs.

Saints could now look to the former Barcelona man to help solidify their wobbly defence in Virgil van Dijk’s absence through injury.

Having sold off Jose Fonte in the January transfer window, Van Dijk’s ankle problem has left Claude Puel’s men very short at the back, with perennial back-up Maya Yoshida and youngster Jack Stephens now first choice in central defence.

The defensive frailties were all too obvious on Saturday, as Saints lost 3-1 to West Ham at St Mary’s – their sixth defeat in seven Premier League games.

The problem has been amplified with Saints conceding nine goals in their last four home games, having let in just five goals in their first eight league games under Puel at St Mary’s.

Caceres has been without a club since last summer after his contract at Juventus expired.

His career started in his homeland, Uruguay, at Defensor, before moving to Spanish outfit Villareal in 2007.

He spent a season on loan at Recreativo, before leaving parent club Villareal for Barcelona.

Caceres’ game time was limited at Barca because of injury problems and being behind Rafael Marquez, Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol in the pecking order at the Camp Nou.

Subsequently, he left on loan for Juventus and then Sevilla, who he eventually joined permanently in 2011.

Los Rojiblancos then sent him back to the Italian giants in a second loan spell, before he signed a contract with the Old Lady in 2012.

The 5ft11in defender won five Serie A titles with Juventus, as well as the Coppa Italia twice.

With Saints failing to bring in cover during the transfer window, having decided against a move for Spartak Moscow’s Serdar Tasci, Puel has recognised that his team are short on options.

The St Mary’s chief has mooted the possibility of moving Ryan Bertrand to centre-back, with Yoshida, Stephens and Florin Gardos, who has recently returned from a two year injury layoff, the only other available options.

Caceres’ match fitness may be an issue, with his last competitive game more than a year ago.

However, with the January transfer window now close, a free agent of the calibre of Caceres may well be enough to entice Saints in to a deal.
